Adult Education and Literacy
(AEL)
AEL’s mission is to empower
individuals through education
and knowledge and promote
learning as a lifelong process that
is necessary for living well in our
changing society and workplace.
AEL services are free and provide
individualized and group instruction
in:
• High School Equivalency (HSE)
test preparation
• English Language Learner (ELL)
classes and U.S. citizenship test
preparation
• Language arts, reading or
mathematics skill building to
prepare for college or improve
job placement

The taxing district, designed in 1966,
includes Benton and Pettis counties.
The city of Otterville was added to
the district by annexation in 1985.
In 1995, state legislation expanded
the college’s service area to include

Performing Arts
Theatre Arts annually presents three
main stage productions, a children’s
play and student-directed one-act
plays utilizing two facilities—the
Stauffacher Theatre and the Thompson
O’Sullivan Studio Theatre. Dinner theatre
productions also are presented.
The Music Arts program generally
presents four performances each
year–fall, holiday, spring, and a
musical retrospect. Each production
showcases the Chamber Choir, Jazz
Choir, Jazz Runners, and small vocal and
instrumental ensembles.
The Stauffacher Artist & Lecturer Series
brings to campus quality performances
by nationally known artists and lecturers.
The Daum Museum of Contemporary
Art on the Sedalia campus features a
collection of abstract paintings, drawings,
prints, ceramics, and sculptures created
since the mid-20th century. Numerous
visiting exhibitions also are presented
and often include artist talks. The Daum
offers educational outreach programs,
and trained volunteer docents provide
tours.

The college offers a residence hall
individually wired for personal network/
Internet connections. About 110 students
reside in the hall.

Multipurpose Center
The Davis Center features a 180-yard
indoor walking/jogging track for public
use, two full–sized basketball/volleyball
courts, a weight and fitness center,
a large multi-use room, two seminar
rooms, and classrooms. For more

SFCC is home of the Roadrunner men’s
and women’s basketball teams and Spirit
Squad. SFCC is a member of the National
Junior College Athletic Association,

Doing Quality Right!
SFCC continues to be accredited by the
Higher Learning Commission through
the Academic Quality Improvement
Program (AQIP) Pathway.
With the completion of the FY15
academic year, SFCC is halfway through
AQIP’s eight-year accreditation cycle.
In FY17 selected employees will attend
a Strategy Forum. The next AQIP
Systems Portfolio, which appraises the
college’s systems for continuous quality
improvement, is due 2017-2018. In FY19,
which is year eight, SFCC will undergo a
Comprehensive Quality Review visit with
final review of Federal Compliance and
Criteria for Accreditation.

While a large component of Doing
Quality Right! focuses on the college’s
ongoing accreditation and the 2020
Vision priorities and strategies, an
equally important piece is promoting
a commitment to continuous quality
improvement by equipping and
encouraging every employee to
practice improvement principles
in their day-to-day processes.
To address the first priority, the
Quality Council implemented this
past year the use of Smartsheet™
a spreadsheet-based, online tool
for project management and
collaboration to track and manage all
of SFCC’s improvement projects.
The Executive Leadership Team reviews
the status of projects monthly to prioritize
and allocate resources. A Quality
Management Review is held three times
a year that guides actions and ties into
the 2020 Vision strategic plan and AQIP’s
six categories of quality improvement.
To further imbed quality improvement
practices, the Quality Council, formed
fall 2012, ensures integration and
documentation of continuous quality
improvement principles throughout
SFCC.
An essential component to Doing Quality
Right! is developing key action plans that
support organizational strategies. The
Quality Council’s priorities for 2014-2015
were as follows:

with measures of success
• Align the college’s report card with
strategic goals and have division
updates at all-college meeting in the
fall
• Engage all employees in Doing Quality
Right! and recognize and celebrate
successes
Daum Museum of
Contemporary Art
With generous financial donations and gift of a large oeuvre of
artwork from local, retired Dr. Harold Daum, the Daum Museum
of Contemporary Art opened in 2002 on SFCC’s Sedalia
campus. The Daum offers about 15 exhibits a year featuring
the works of local, national and international artists in addition
to displaying pieces from the Daum’s permanent collection.
The museum boasts nine galleries on three levels, with a
combined area of 9,300 square feet. The permanent collection
consists of approximately 1,500 objects and includes paintings,
drawings, prints, photographs, ceramics, and sculpture created
since the mid-20th century. It features significant works
by Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert
Motherwell, Peter Voulkos, Betty Woodman, Louise Bourgeois,
Linda Connor, and Ansel Adams.
The Daum Museum sheds light on the stimulating complexity
of modern and contemporary art by collecting, preserving,
interpreting, and exhibiting artworks created since the mid20th century. In concert with SFCC’s faculty and students,
the Daum works to enhance the cultural and educational life
of the college, the city of Sedalia and communities in the
college’s 14-county service area. On average, more than 900
area elementary and secondary students and their teachers
participate in a special art experience called the Daum
Escape each year, and more than 12,000 people visit the
museum annually. Admission is free; for more information

MoHealthWINs
In 2011, SFCC received a $940,500
grant to expand its allied health
programs and train workers for health
care jobs and careers.
The funding was part of a $20
million grant awarded to 12 Missouri
public community colleges and
Linn State Technical College by
the U.S. Department of Labor and
administered through the Missouri
Community College Association.
SFCC used the funds to add a
Diagnostic Medical Sonography
program, expand offerings in the
Radiologic Technology program,
and train additional students in CNA,
CMT and Phlebotomy. Funding also
provided tuition assistance to eligible
students.

The grant officially ended June 30,
2015, and SFCC exceeded its goal
and enrolled 320 participants with
232 program completers.
MoSTEMWINs
In October 2014, SFCC received $970,809 to
support SFCC’s Student Success Navigator
program for academic success in all Allied
Health programs, including Dental Hygiene
and Health Information Technology.
The funding was part of a $15 million grant
awarded to the Missouri Community College
Association by the U.S. Department of Labor.

MoManufacturingWINs
Energy Innovation Center
In 2013, SFCC received $995,785 to
meet the growing work force needs
of the manufacturing industry.
Three words define SFCC’s Energy Innovation Center (EIC):
people, power and potential.
The $15 million statewide
MoManufacturingWINs program
is funded by the U.S. Department
of Labor and administered through the Missouri Community
College Association.
SFCC used the funds to develop courses and programs in
Machine Tool, Welding and Industrial Maintenance. Funding
also provides tuition assistance to eligible students.
To date, 240 participants have enrolled in programs with 110
completing and 69 employed.
In April 2014, the $3.4 million EIC opened with a celebration
attended by state and local representatives. The center is a
public-private partnership between SFCC, Waste Corporation
of West Central Missouri, Kansas City Power & Light, and PPS
Group.
It houses two generators that converts biogas from 59 wells
into electricity that generates as much as 2.4 megawatts—
enough to power 1,500 homes. The center also includes
classrooms used by SFCC’s Renewable Energy Technology
program and business accelerator space for emerging
businesses to explore and prove next generation energy
technologies.
CMU Clinical
Counseling Center
Free personal counseling is now available to SFCC students
on the Sedalia campus through a partnership with Central
Methodist University (CMU). The partnership was created to
address students’ mental health needs identified by a survey
conducted by SFCC’s counseling staff.
The CMU Clinical Counseling Center, located in Fielding 236,
is staffed with graduate students who are in their final year of
CMU’s counseling program. They are under the supervision of
the practicum instructor, clinical supervisor and clinical director.
The center is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays
during fall and spring semesters.

Navigators
On Oct. 1, 2014, the college
launched the Student Success
Navigator program under the
Student Success and Retention
office. The program is designed
to provide every student with
a navigator who will be that
student’s “personal guide to
success” at SFCC. The director
and coordinator of the Student
Success and Retention Services,
along with 14 trained navigators
and other staff and faculty, work
with new and current students
on all campuses in reaching their
educational goals.
Each SFCC student is assigned
a personal navigator to work
with one-on-one in preparing a
successful educational journey,
staying on course and dealing
with issues that could cause
detours along the way. The goal
is to provide educational and
personal support for all SFCC
students that results in more
students staying in college and
reaching their goals.

Safety and Security
Enhancements to SFCC’s safety and security in 2014 included:
• Mass notification system installed at all campuses allows
safety information to be broadcast in public areas and
hallways.
• A Campus Resource Deputy from Pettis County Sheriff’s
office was hired for the Sedalia campus.
• SFCC implemented SFCC Alert, a collegewide emergency
texting service for students, employees, affiliates, and
community members.
Extended Campus News
SFCC-Boonville: An expansion is planned to move into the
science hall on the Kemper Campus, which will provide
additional resources, classes and certificate programs in
Computer Programing. SFCC has partnered with Central
Methodist University (CMU) to offer a bridge program for
students interested in attending CMU but who do not meet
admission requirements. Up to 10 students will be accepted
into the program. Students will take six credit hours at SFCCBoonville and six credit hours at CMU during the academic
year and may live in CMU residence halls and participate in
clubs and organizations. The program's goal is to help students
meet CMU admission requirements.
SFCC-Eldon: In January 2015 the Registered Nursing program
was added.
SFCC-Lake of the Ozarks: Due to high demand, science
classes are now offered from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
SFCC-Whiteman AFB: Efforts continue to offer classes in flight
line facilities to Air Force personnel who work on the flight line.
Additionally, talks are underway with the 442nd Fighter Wing to
offer CLEP/DSST testing quarterly during weekend drill.
Campus Master Plan
In October 2014, the SFCC Board of Trustees hired The
Clark Enersen Partners (CEP) of Kansas City to facilitate a
15-year campus master plan that encompasses the Sedalia
campus, the McLaughlin building in downtown Sedalia and
the Energy Innovation Center. It included facility assessments,
space inventory and needs analysis, traffic flow and parking,
landscape and architecture branding opportunities, future
building sites, and five- and 10-year phasing recommendations.
A 16-member steering committee comprised of college
personnel and community members was formed to work
with CEP in gathering data, assessments and analysis. Several
forums and public meetings were held throughout fall 2014
and early in 2015 to gain input and feedback to three proposed
concepts to address future needs of the college’s facilities.
SFCC-Clinton: In January 2015 an estimated 7,000 square feet
of instructional and testing space, including five classrooms,
laboratory space, a testing center, a commons area, and
four additional offices, was added at the Truman Regional
Education Center, as well as two full-time faculty. In fall 2015, a
new Medical Assistant program will be offered in Clinton. The
program includes an Associate of Applied Science degree and
a Professional Certificate. Students will participate in clinicals at
Golden Valley Memorial Hospital and St. Luke's Medical Group
in Clinton.

Service Education
In spring 2015, SFCC and Central Methodist University signed
an articulation agreement that expanded their transfer
agreement to include music, health sciences, or applied
behavioral analysis in addition to 13 other bachelor’s degrees
that CMU offers SFCC graduates.
SFCC Foundation
The SFCC Foundation closed another busy fiscal year in 2015
that provided $125,000 in scholarships for 133 students. This is
an increase of $19,000 over the previous year.
The foundation held two scholarship luncheons in Sedalia
and at the Lake of the Ozarks, which were attended by 165
recipients and donors; the foundation also hosted two major
social and fundraising events – Genuine Country Music
Association’s (GCMA) Classic Country Jamboree at the Lake
of the Ozarks,

Since 1994, SFCC has offered students a course focused on
service education. In 2011, the college began offering three
courses dedicated to service education: Emerging Leaders;
Service Learning and Leadership; and Problems in Service
Learning and Leadership. Students are introduced to
leadership philosophy, styles and ethics as they apply to the
college and the community and are required to participate in a
20-hour service learning component and fundraising activities.
Various leadership themes and principles are examined as
students complete service hours and learning activities in
community, campus and urban settings.
The Service Learning and Leadership course offers students
the opportunity to travel abroad to countries such as England,
Scotland, Ireland, Germany, France, and Belgium. It is designed
to expose students to perspectives, problem-solving and
challenges that often shape good leaders. They experience
unfamiliar territory beyond their comfort zone and learn to
appreciate the viewpoints of people who live outside their
scope of the world.
Over the years, more than 500 students have taken these
courses and raised nearly $50,000 through the sale of
Roadrunner Fudge and other activities. A portion of the funds
has been given to various charities and organizations while
the remainder has been used to assist students with travel
expenses.
SFCC now has formal transfer agreements with 13 Missouri
universities. In fall 2014, SFCC signed an agreement with
Grantham University in which associate degree graduates
can take their education even further by transferring to the
100 percent online university to pursue bachelor’s degrees
in accounting, business, computer science, criminal justice,
engineering and nursing.
