Poultry Show
Live bird exhibits were canceled at fairs
across Iowa this summer, in an effort to reduce the spread of avian influenza. Organizers
of the Winnebago County Fair still wanted to
give kids an opportunity to share their experience and knowledge at the fair, and they came
up with the following classes for competition
in this year’s poultry show.
Skill-a-thon
Exhibitors answered questions and interacted with a facilitator at each of five stations:
parts of reproduction, parts of digestive system, evaluating eggs, biosecurity and breeds.
Intermediate exhibitors: 1st place – Paris
Reimann, Forest Everreadies; 2nd place – Sonja Rygh, Logan Loganeers; 3rd place – Katelin
Adams, Grant Gleaners.
Senior exhibitor: 1st place – Rachel Holst,
Lake Mills FFA.
Display Board
Exhibitors shared their knowledge and skill
with the birds through pictures and captions.
Intermediate exhibitors (blue ribbons):
Paris Reimann, Forest Everreadies; Sonja
Rygh, Logan Loganeers; Katelin Adams,
Grant Gleaners.
Market/Meat/Carcass
Exhibitors brought the processed bird in a
sealed bag in its frozen state and were judged
on skeletal structure and skin presentation.
Senior exhibitor (blue ribbon): Rachel
Holst, Lake Mills FFA.
Showmanship
Showmanship was judged based on the exhibitor’s knowledge shown during the Skill-athon, along with their presentation of the display board within an interview with the judge.
Intermediate Showmanship: Paris Reimann, Forest Everreadies.
Senior Showmanship: Rachel Holst, Lake
Mills FFA.
