Founded in 1963, the La Jolla Historical
Society is a champion for La Jolla’s heritage
by discovering, collecting and preserving the
community’s historical documentation, artifacts, sites and structures.
The Society is committed to increasing the community’s awareness and
appreciation of its heritage by providing access to and interpretation of its
collection for the public and presenting educational programs for all ages.
The La Jolla Historical Society was the final stop
of the 2011 La Jolla Motor Car Classic Tour,
sponsored by Ferrari Maserati of San Diego.
The Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with more than 800
members. The Society owns three historic buildings on the site of what
was once the estate of famous philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps,
including the historic 1904 Wisteria Cottage, a 1909 beach cottage that
serves as the Society’s offices and public research, and the adjacent 1894
carriage house. The Society is in the final stages of a multi-million-dollar
capital campaign to raise funds to restore the historic property for public
exhibitions, educational programs, gift shop, research facilities, modern
archives storage and offices.

The Monarch School provides an accredited
education to homeless and at-risk children,
while also caring for their basic needs such as
healthcare, food, clothing and personal hygiene. The project was formed as a
California not-for-profit corporation to fund renovations, furniture and fixtures.
This unique public school serves students in grades K-12 who have been
impacted by homelessness, providing them with an accredited education
and an after school program, as well as basic necessities such as medical
and dental care, food and clothing, hygiene kits, transportation, and family
assistance. Currently there are more than 15,870 homeless students in our
county, according to San Diego County School Districts. Monarch students live
in shelters, motels, single room occupancy housing, double- or tripled-up with
other families in small apartments, in campsites, cars, or on the streets.

T he concours
It is fitting that when translated into Spanish, La Jolla means “the
jewel,” because La Jolla truly is the diamond of the West Coast. La
Jolla has become the embodiment of luxury, class and style in San
Diego. The chic allure of La Jolla’s avenues has drawn the finest
automobiles to this coastal town for the past ten years at the La
Jolla Concours d’Elegance and The La Jolla Motor Car Classic at
the Concours.
The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance features various types of
fine automobile gems. Past years have showcased horseless
carriages, Italian marques, British marques, Woodies, 50’s
classics, American sports cars (with a salute to GM on their 100th
anniversary), and the automobiles of Carroll Shelby. Spectators
from all over the nation come to the breathtaking shores of La Jolla
to view their favorite classics. As the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance
rolls into its eleventh year, it will be Celebrating Coachbuilt
Classics of the 30’s and 40’s. We hope once again that if diamonds
are forever, then cars are timeless.

Concours d’Elegance. According to Webster, “Concours” comes from the French, and
means “a crowd or confluence of things; also a park promenade.” The term conjures up
romantic visions of beautiful women in haute couture in a park-like setting surrounded by
sparkling coaches, glistening groomed horses, gorgeous flowers, champagne, fine art and
sculpture, and later, by the finest automotive art.
Man, being the perpetual competitor, has generally sought to triumph. Civilized chivalry,
combined with grandeur, became the prevailing spirit of the Concours d’Elegance.
Originating in the late 17th century, the early Concours was a leisurely social affair where
light-hearted competitions among coaches and fashions were rewarded with rosettes,
wine and champagne. As coaches and carriages segued into automobiles in the late 19th
century, the competitions became more defined. By the mid 1920s, no society season on the
French Riviera was complete without a variety of organized Concours events.

H istor y
As the romance of the Roaring 20s and the refined elegance of the 30s gave way to the
perils of world war, we find the demise of the Concours as it gave way to the bare survival
of nations. Once the free world was able to right itself and move beyond subsistence, it was
the troika of visionaries Jules Huemann, Reverend Paul Woudenberg and Loren Tryon who
in 1950 created what was to become the grandfather of all post-war Concours—Pebble
Beach.
So, what for centuries had been a European staple has become a true international
tradition. It pays homage to its French roots by its very name, and is patterned by the
defined structure of judging rules. We wish to acknowledge and thank all of our past and
present sponsors who have supported the La Jolla Historical Society in hosting such a firstclass event. The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance today gives our competitors and spectators
the opportunity to share this time-honored tradition. Enjoy!
Dr. Cy Conrad
Chief Judge

Emcee
La Jolla Concours d’Elegance and the La Jolla Historical Society are thrilled to welcome back Keith
Martin as emcee of this year’s show. “In 2012 the event raised it’s bar significantly. It has all
the requisite pieces in place to move up the ladder of nationally known concours. The setting is
spectacular, almost Pebble Beach-esque,” says Keith.
In addition to being the founder and publisher of the monthly Sports Car Market and Corvette
Market magazines, Martin’s columns on collecting and reviewing of exotic cars have appeared in
The New York Times, Automobile, AutoWeek, Road & Track and other publications. His Keith Martin
on Collecting series, published by Motorbooks International, includes books on Ferrari, Jaguar, Alfa
Romeo, Porsche, Austin-Healey, MG and Triumph, as well as two editions of Keith Martin’s Guide to
Car Collecting.
In 2011, Martin and eBay Motors released a proprietary web-based value-tracking tool, the
Collector Car Price Tracker, the first real-time collector car price guide in the world. On television,
Martin’s most recent show is What’s My Car Worth, now showing on the Velocity channel (formerly
Discovery HD Theater). For eleven years, he was an analyst at the Barrett-Jackson auction for Speed
Channel. Known for his incisive knowledge of collector cars coupled with a warm sense of humor,
Martin is the morning host for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, emcee of Concourse Italiano
and the Keels and Wheels Concours in Houston, and the co-emcee, along with Edward Herrmann,
of the Kirkland Concours, in Washington.

The Harley-Davidson or classic collectible car stands proud with the sun reflecting in its polished chrome.
Every detail is perfection, right down to the reflections. Admirers are often surprised to discover that
the image before them is not a photograph, but a Scott Jacobs painting. In 1993, Scott became the
first officially licensed Harley-Davidson artist and still proudly holds that honor. Added to that list are:
Chevrolet, Ford, Mattel, Marilyn Monroe Estates and Elvis Presley Enterprises.
Scott began his career in art, not with his painting, but by buying a failing gallery at 19 with money he
had saved from working odd jobs. At 21, Scott had the cash and customer base to open Reflections On
Canvas Gallery in Westfield, N.J., a gallery that met with much success. Scott’s images can be seen on
a variety of objects from limited editions graphics to Franklin Mint Collector plates, coffee mugs, beach
towels, clocks and many others. 2010 saw the release of his second book, The Art of Scott Jacobs The Complete Works.

We make it easy to reach the best prospects for luxury goods and
services such as exotic cars, real estate and financial services,
as well as luxury travel and entertainment. Target the crème de la
crème, up close, in person, at the eleventh annual La Jolla Concours
d’Elegance and The La Jolla Motor Car Classic at the Concours from
Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12, 2015. This event draws the
most sophisticated audience from San Diego and surrounding areas,
as well as across the nation.
Have an exhibit in a prime location at one of the most beautiful
venues in the world. Reach vehicle exhibitors and guests through
our mailings, in our literature, on our website (where we can link to
yours), signage at partner events and in our media advertising.
Support this premier festival in one of the world’s most prestigious
communities, build brand recognition and earn goodwill within
the community and throughout the region. Proceeds support the
Monarch School for Homeless Children and the La Jolla Historical
Society. Best of all, by getting involved now, you’ll be guaranteed a
place in the event for future years as it grows to become one of the
leading attractions of its kind.
