The Love of a Sinner
Depending on your interpretation of this caption
- either as a sinner being loved or as a sinner in possession of love - what is important here is the dominance of
love. Love is pervasive and all encompassing, even showing its rays
in the darkest circumstances. Today’s gospel passage is the account
of the encounter of Jesus with a nameless woman (with a kind of
notoriety), who washed his feet with her tears and dried them up
with her hair. It portrays and affirms in a real and deep sense that
true love is expressed in generous mercy and gratitude. The woman
was considered an outcast, and derided by others who sanctimoniously saw her outpouring of sincere emotion and love on Jesus as
inappropriate. But Jesus looked deeper into her soul, he saw in her a
woman made in the image and likeness of God. He saw in her, a
wounded beauty that needed healing, he accepted what she had to
offer from her very state as a genuine expression of her love and
appreciation for what he has done for her.
Since the assumption of his papacy, the Holy Father Pope
Francis, has stressed that mercy is paramount in the mission of the
church. Once asked about the position of the church on gay people,
he retorted, “who am I to judge?” Though this passage has since
then been hijacked and misinterpreted, but the Holy Father who
once responded when asked, “who are you? “I am a sinner whom
God has looked upon,” was only highlighting the fundamental
teaching of the church, that we all are sinners who are in need of
God’s mercy. Above all, that we all bear the image of God because
we are made in God’s likeness. Thus, it is the onus of the church to
seek and search for the straying sheep. He famously said: “I prefer a
church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out
on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being
confined and from clinging to its own security.” Like the nameless
woman whom we could adopt or appropriate with our very names,
let us be reassured of God’s mercy, and above all, may we appreciate God’s love for us, people made in the image and likeness of God
- imago dei.

If there are any young men who have wondered if the priesthood
might be something they want to investigate, the Vocations’ office does have the Saint John Paul II House of Discernment (JPII
House). We are looking for men from 18-35 to live at JPII House
while they study or work, and simultaneously get a feel for what
priestly ministry is like, in order to help them discern if they may
be called to serve as priests.
