Know Your Options
With identity theft on the rise, EECU is offering its
members the opportunity to bring their personal
documents to EECU and have them destroyed for
FREE safely and confidentially.
Saturday, November 8th – Perrin Branch
Saturday, November 22nd – Reedley Branch
All Shred Events begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at noon.
You are encouraged to bring personal documents,
such as:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
statements
cancelled or blank checks
credit card offers/information
medical records
personal bills
receipts
income tax records
Please limit your shredding to three boxes. Shred
events will close early if the shred truck is filled
to capacity.
Under federal regulation, you’re allowed up to
six transfers or withdrawals from your Share
account each month using the following:
• Checking overdraft protection
(there is a $1 fee for overdraft transfer
from savings to checking)
• Personal Telephone Access (PTA)
• Online Access
• Request by phone or fax
• Pre-authorized automatic electronic
funds transfer (ACH)
Once you reach the limit of six, your next
transfer or withdrawal request will be denied
– even if sufficient funds are available in
your savings account. In turn, this may
become an inconvenience and cause checks
to bounce.
You can make unlimited withdrawals and
transfers from your Share account each
month using the following methods:
• In person at any branch
• In person at any OptionTeller ATM
• In person at any network ATM
• In writing when sent by mail
Maximize Your NCUA
Share Insurance Coverage
Coverage increased from $100,000 up to $250,000
We’ve been getting questions from our members
about how well their deposits are insured at EECU.
The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008,
signed into law on October 3, 2008, increased the
federal insurance coverage on all accounts from
$100,000 up to $250,000 through December 31, 2009.
You can maximize your share insurance coverage by
maintaining different combinations of accounts and
ownership. For some examples, visit our website,
www.eecufresno.org, or visit the NCUA’s website,
www.ncua.gov and click the NCUA Share Insurance
Coverage Tool Kit link.
You may also contact the NCUA directly by calling
their Consumer Assistance Center between 8 a.m.
and 6 p.m. (EDT) at 1-800-755-1030, press 1 for share
insurance questions.
If you find yourself exceeding the six
restricted transaction types from your Share
account, you may consider other options
such as applying for an Overdraft Protection
Loan. This loan offers you instant access to
a credit line from $100 to $5,000 (based on
your qualifications). You may apply by
visiting our website or by calling our

With the advancement of computer technology,
it has become easier for criminals to create
counterfeit checks. This is often done with a simple
desktop publishing software or a color copier. Some
counterfeiters are better than others, and
sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference
between a legitimate and counterfeit check. Here
are some “red flags” to look for to identify a
counterfeit check:
• The check lacks perforations

The Federal Government Regulation D limits
the number of transfers and withdrawals
that are made from a Share (savings)
account each month. Regulation D, also
known as Reg D, was established to limit
the number of transactions made from a
savings account. The Federal Government’s
philosophy is that “savings” should be strictly
for saving money. Contrary to a Share
account, an account with a high number of
deposits and withdrawals is considered a
“transaction” account.

• The number coding on the bottom of the

• Genuine magnetic ink appears dull
and non-glossy
• The check number on the bottom of the

• The name of the payee appears to have
been printed by a typewriter
• The word VOID appears across the check
Counterfeit checks are frequently used to pay for
purchases made on the Internet. In this type of
scam, the purchaser tells the seller that they will
send a Cashier’s Check for the purchase price,
including shipping costs. Frequently, the purchaser
will also say that since the shipping costs aren’t
known at that time, they will send more than enough
money to cover this cost. The purchaser asks the
seller to wire the excess funds back once they
receive the check and ship the goods.
Unfortunately, when the seller realizes that the
Cashier’s Check is fraudulent, they will not only
be out their merchandise and the shipping
charge, but also the money that they wired back to
the seller prior to finding out the check is bad.

Merced County
Superintendent of Schools
Our annual election to the Board of
Directors and Supervisory Committee is
May 2009.
On October 15, 2008, we celebrated the
achievements of 28 outstanding men and women
at the annual Tulare County Excellence in
Education Awards recognition breakfast. There is
a common thread that runs through the lives of
these extraordinary individuals – it’s their ability
to look to the future, bring inspiration and
encouragement and a belief that every student can
succeed. They remind us that leadership is not just
for people at the top. Everyone – through their
acts of kindness, caring nature and community
outreach – can empower our schools and open the
doors of opportunity for future generations.
Madera County’s Excellence in Education gala
awards is always an exciting event. Our nominees
and finalists represent the excellence we seek from
those dedicated to the success of our students.
Daily we see the results of their commitment to
students, service to others and the passion they
hold for the work they do.
As I begin my third year as Fresno County
Superintendent of Schools, I have the privilege of
recognizing the outstanding educators who offer
their personal best to our county’s 190,000+
students. The Educator of the Year Awards,
generously sponsored by Educational Employees
Credit Union, spotlight these exemplary
teachers, school employees and administrators
and acknowledge their dedication, talents
and expertise.
This is to thank and recognize Educational Employees Credit
Union for their generous support of the Merced County
Teacher of the Year Program. EECU has helped the whole
community become more aware of excellence in education.
They also give us the opportunity to honor our teachers
through the selection of exemplary award recipients.
We extend our appreciation to Educational
Employees Credit Union, its board of directors, and
President/CEO Beth Dooley for hosting this
wonderful occasion and celebrating 14 years of
excellence in our schools. The partnership between
the Tulare County Office of Education and
Educational Employees Credit Union is an important
one, because it focuses on the resiliency of our public
school system and those who serve our children.
Special thanks to the selection committee –
consisting of Tulare County business, community
and educational leaders – who diligently reviewed
all the candidates’ applications. We are delighted
with their participation and appreciate the efforts
Tulare County schools invest in honoring each and
every nominee.

Those honored represent professional diversity in the
teaching profession. This year’s honorees include outstanding
educators from throughout Merced County, from elementary
teachers to special education and preschool teachers to
music instructors.

Holiday Safety Tips
Be cautious during this busy season
Shopping for the upcoming holiday season can present
some dangers. Following a few safety tips can help
keep the upcoming holiday season safe and joyous.
The holiday season is a time when busy people can
become careless and vulnerable to theft and other
holiday crime. The following tips can help you be more
careful and prepared during the holiday season:
• Do your shopping during daylight hours
whenever possible.
• If possible, do not carry a purse or wallet.
*EECU employees, officials, and their spouses and dependents are not eligible. Eligibility requirements are available online, or
by calling (559) 437-7840. Proof of enrollment is required for distribution of grant.
Photo taken by Michael Karibian.
• Stay alert to your surroundings.
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and always
carry cash in your front pocket.
• Pay for purchases with a check or credit card
whenever possible.
• Notify EECU immediately if your credit card
is lost, stolen or misused.
• Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers
in a safe place at home.
• Beware of strangers approaching you for any
reason. At this time of year, con-artists may try
various methods of distracting you with the
intention of taking your money or belongings.

Holiday Safety Tips
Be cautious during this busy season
Shopping for the upcoming holiday season can present
some dangers. Following a few safety tips can help
keep the upcoming holiday season safe and joyous.
The holiday season is a time when busy people can
become careless and vulnerable to theft and other
holiday crime. The following tips can help you be more
careful and prepared during the holiday season:
• Do your shopping during daylight hours
whenever possible.
• If possible, do not carry a purse or wallet.
*EECU employees, officials, and their spouses and dependents are not eligible. Eligibility requirements are available online, or

• Pay for purchases with a check or credit card
whenever possible.
• Notify EECU immediately if your credit card
is lost, stolen or misused.

Credit Union Elections
Tulare County
Superintendent of Schools
Madera County
Superintendent of Schools
Fresno County
Superintendent of Schools
Merced County
Superintendent of Schools
Our annual election to the Board of
Directors and Supervisory Committee is
May 2009.
On October 15, 2008, we celebrated the
achievements of 28 outstanding men and women
at the annual Tulare County Excellence in
Education Awards recognition breakfast. There is
a common thread that runs through the lives of
these extraordinary individuals – it’s their ability
to look to the future, bring inspiration and
encouragement and a belief that every student can
succeed. They remind us that leadership is not just
for people at the top. Everyone – through their
acts of kindness, caring nature and community
outreach – can empower our schools and open the
doors of opportunity for future generations.
Madera County’s Excellence in Education gala
awards is always an exciting event. Our nominees
and finalists represent the excellence we seek from
those dedicated to the success of our students.
Daily we see the results of their commitment to
students, service to others and the passion they
hold for the work they do.
As I begin my third year as Fresno County
Superintendent of Schools, I have the privilege of
recognizing the outstanding educators who offer
their personal best to our county’s 190,000+
students. The Educator of the Year Awards,
generously sponsored by Educational Employees
Credit Union, spotlight these exemplary
teachers, school employees and administrators
and acknowledge their dedication, talents
and expertise.
This is to thank and recognize Educational Employees Credit
Union for their generous support of the Merced County
Teacher of the Year Program. EECU has helped the whole
community become more aware of excellence in education.
They also give us the opportunity to honor our teachers
through the selection of exemplary award recipients.
We extend our appreciation to Educational
Employees Credit Union, its board of directors, and
President/CEO Beth Dooley for hosting this
wonderful occasion and celebrating 14 years of
excellence in our schools. The partnership between
the Tulare County Office of Education and
Educational Employees Credit Union is an important
one, because it focuses on the resiliency of our public
school system and those who serve our children.
Special thanks to the selection committee –
consisting of Tulare County business, community
and educational leaders – who diligently reviewed
all the candidates’ applications. We are delighted
with their participation and appreciate the efforts
Tulare County schools invest in honoring each and
every nominee.
Tulare County 2008
Excellence in Education Winners
Our Selection Committee, comprised of business
and community leaders from throughout the
county, painstakingly accepted the challenging
task of selecting our finalists! Committee
members marveled at the quality of our
nominees. This program serves many purposes –
one of which is to remind us all how important
our work in education is for our children and for
our future!
Madera County’s education community is deeply
grateful to Beth Dooley and the Educational
Employees Credit Union board of directors and
staff for their generosity in sponsoring the
Excellence in Education Awards Program. It is a
privilege to partner with an organization whose
commitment to our schools is genuine. We look
forward to our continued partnership with
Educational Employees Credit Union for years
to come.
Madera County 2008
Excellence in Education Winners
It is our pleasure, this year, to welcome Elizabeth
Dooley, President/CEO to EECU. Thanks to the
legacy of excellence and commitment to education,
we are able to partner with our credit union
friends/colleagues to recognize and showcase the
positive things that are taking place in our public
schools. Your contributions to our success are
immeasurable.
On behalf of the Fresno County Board of Education,
our 34 school districts, and all of the professionals
who work each day to bring out the best in our
students, we congratulate this year’s nominees,
finalists and winners. We applaud your passion and
thank you for making us proud to be your
colleagues. Congratulations!
Fresno County 2008
Educator of the Year Winners
Serve your community and run for office!
Those honored represent professional diversity in the
teaching profession. This year’s honorees include outstanding
educators from throughout Merced County, from elementary
teachers to special education and preschool teachers to
music instructors.
Their vision and passion for education is shared daily with
students, parents, faculty, and the community. These
teachers realize the essentials of education are commonly
listed as curriculum, instruction, and assessment, but
challenge themselves to form strong relationships with
students and use those bonds to instill life lessons in addition
to academic fundamentals.
The Merced County Office of Education gratefully
acknowledges Educational Employees Credit Union’s
support of this event and their commitment to education.

Share Insurance Coverage
Coverage increased from $100,000 up to $250,000
We’ve been getting questions from our members
about how well their deposits are insured at EECU.
The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008,
signed into law on October 3, 2008, increased the
federal insurance coverage on all accounts from
$100,000 up to $250,000 through December 31, 2009.
You can maximize your share insurance coverage by
maintaining different combinations of accounts and
ownership. For some examples, visit our website,
www.eecufresno.org, or visit the NCUA’s website,
www.ncua.gov and click the NCUA Share Insurance
Coverage Tool Kit link.
You may also contact the NCUA directly by calling
their Consumer Assistance Center between 8 a.m.
and 6 p.m. (EDT) at 1-800-755-1030, press 1 for share
insurance questions.
If you find yourself exceeding the six
restricted transaction types from your Share
account, you may consider other options
such as applying for an Overdraft Protection
Loan. This loan offers you instant access to
a credit line from $100 to $5,000 (based on
your qualifications). You may apply by
visiting our website or by calling our

With the advancement of computer technology,
it has become easier for criminals to create
counterfeit checks. This is often done with a simple

counterfeiters are better than others, and
sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference
between a legitimate and counterfeit check. Here
are some “red flags” to look for to identify a

The Federal Government Regulation D limits
the number of transfers and withdrawals
that are made from a Share (savings)
account each month. Regulation D, also
known as Reg D, was established to limit
the number of transactions made from a
savings account. The Federal Government’s
philosophy is that “savings” should be strictly
for saving money. Contrary to a Share
account, an account with a high number of
deposits and withdrawals is considered a
“transaction” account.

With the advancement of computer technology,
it has become easier for criminals to create
counterfeit checks. This is often done with a simple
desktop publishing software or a color copier. Some
counterfeiters are better than others, and
sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference
between a legitimate and counterfeit check. Here
are some “red flags” to look for to identify a
counterfeit check:
• The check lacks perforations

Kingsburg, 940 Sierra Ave.
• Madera, 1902 Howard Rd.
• Reedley, 385 W. Manning Ave.
• Sanger, 1905 7th St.
•
• The check number is missing, or if more
than one check is present, the check
number does not change
•
• The font type varies on different areas
of the check

The Federal Government Regulation D limits
the number of transfers and withdrawals
that are made from a Share (savings)
account each month. Regulation D, also
known as Reg D, was established to limit
the number of transactions made from a
savings account. The Federal Government’s
philosophy is that “savings” should be strictly
for saving money. Contrary to a Share
account, an account with a high number of
deposits and withdrawals is considered a
“transaction” account.
