W
elcome to the first edition of the Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations annual stewardship report. Thanks to your generous
support, 2011 was another remarkable year. As an investor in our success, it’s important that you know the impact your philanthropy
has on Meridian Health. In addition to recognizing our donors, we hope you will gain some valuable insight from this publication on
how your dollars were put to work to advance your hospital’s vision of providing the best health care experience in your community.
Over the past year, there have been many exciting developments taking place and thanks to strong leadership and new members, our
boards are more vibrant than ever. While continuing to be a leader in cardiac care for our region, Jersey Shore University Medical Center
is expanding K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital to accommodate the growing number of young patients and their families. Bayshore
Community Hospital is also currently focused on the needs of young patients through the creation of the Pediatric Care Center, a
dedicated space in the existing Emergency Department.
Riverview Medical Center is on it’s way to becoming a premier center for surgical excellence in our region with the addition
of state-of-the-art surgical suites and an education and conference center that will attract superior medical professionals.
Ocean Medical Center and Southern Ocean Medical Center are also expanding and will each soon have new and larger
Emergency Departments equipped with the latest technology to provide their growing communities with the most
advanced emergency care. As always, Meridian at Home Hospice is making great strides, advancing technology at the patient bedside to make care coordination even easier.
As Meridian grows to meet tomorrow’s needs and the expectations of this growing region, we are acutely
aware that these advancements and developments would not be possible without the extraordinary
support we receive from you, our donor family. Your investment has a direct impact on the lives of
so many and our success is credited to the generous spirit of our extended Meridian family. It is a

hank you! Through the generosity and dedication of
our donor family, 2011 was an extremely successful year
for Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation. Through
your philanthropic gifts, we were able to assist Bayshore
Community Hospital in providing quality, patient-centered
health care, as well as educational opportunities for our
clinical team.
Advancing the education of our nursing staff has always been
a priority for Bayshore and through donor funded scholarships,
we were fortunate to provide assistance to deserving nurses
this year. This generous support, in turn, helped the entire
Bayshore community come closer to its goal to achieve
Magnet status – a gold standard in nursing excellence of
which Meridian Health was the first health system in the
nation to achieve.
We are also proud to announce that this past spring hundreds
of Bayshore team members came together in our first
employee campaign as part of Meridian Health, to give
back and financially support the programs and services
they provide so skillfully each and every day. This
overwhelming response reflects the commitment our
team has to the care of our patients and their families.
Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation never forgets that
it is your charitable kindness that allows us to provide our
patients and their families the best health care experience close
to home. In 2011, you selflessly supported many important
hospital departments including cardiac care, pediatric care
and rehabilitation. As current and immediate past board

Scholarship Advanced Nursing Education in 2011
2011 Winners of the
Harry M. Poppick Scholarship
Thanks to the continued generosity of the
Poppick family, 2011 marked the 21st year of the
Harry M. Poppick Scholarship, named for a long
time physician in our community and supporter
of nursing education who passed away in 1990.
In addition to this scholarship, our donor family
has also generously supported the Dr. Yong Choo
Scholarship, and Family & Friends Nursing
Scholarships, all providing many deserving nurses
with assistance as they look to enhance their
education and the excellent care provided at

growth of the hospital including plans this year to add new
services in wound care healing,
sleep, women’s diagnostics,
diagnostic imaging and endoscopy.
Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation would like
to thank the generous community members and team
members that participated in our first Lights of Love
program in 2011. This effort provided an opportunity to
honor or memorialize a doctor, friend or loved one while
supporting Bayshore Community Hospital. The Lights of
Love memorial stars hung at the hospital as a tribute to
our generous community and the individuals who have
shaped their lives. All proceeds benefitted the Patient
Comfort Fund, providing small comforts such as
toiletries, clothing or taxi rides to our patients in need.

Bayshore Community Hospital
Foundation held its 29th Annual Golf
Classic at Manasquan River Golf
Club raising more than $40,000 for
programs and services at Bayshore
Community Hospital. Under the
leadership of Serena DiMaso, Esq.,
chair of the Golf Classic committee
and Foundation Board of Trustees,
75 golfers enjoyed a day of golf for
a good cause. Thanks to the
generous support of our local
business community, Bayshore’s
Golf Classic was a great success.

Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation held its 3rd annual
Wine Tasting, the most successful to date, raising $30,000 to benefit
Cardiac Services at Bayshore Community Hospital. The event’s
steadfast co-chairs, Fern and Peter Esposito and Mary and Dr. Elias
Lehaf ensured that the event was spectacular for all in attendance,
with 125 guests enjoying an international wine tasting from around
the globe. Special thanks was paid to the Scaduto and Azzolina
families of Spirits Unlimited and Food Circus Foodtown, the event
sponsors, for donating the featured wines for the evening.

2011 saw the formation of Bayshore
Community Hospital Foundation’s
first Heritage Club, which recognizes
those who have remembered Bayshore
in their will and estate planning. A
special cocktail reception was held in
the fall to thank our first members and
to provide information to those interested
in seeing how to make Bayshore a
part of their estate plans. For more

As a resident of Holmdel for over 20 years, a first aid squad volunteer
and a mother of four, Lynn Davis has spent her fair share of time at
Bayshore Community Hospital. Because of the good experiences she
has had as a patient and as a professional, supporting the creation of
the Pediatric Care Center at Bayshore with a generous donation was
an easy decision.
“The Emergency Department at Bayshore is already so great, they are
so responsive. When I bring patients in I am always impressed with
the triage and fast-track areas,” Lynn said. “Adding a pediatric care
center will be a tremendous asset and appeals to me as a parent. I
know how important it is to our growing community to be able to
stay close to home to treat our children from bumps and bruises to
more serious emergencies.”
Thanks to you, Janet and other patients
like her received the treatment that put
her cancer in remission and she is
living life to the fullest. When Janet
was diagnosed with colon cancer,
she chose to receive her treatment in
the Michael J. Ganz Infusion Suite at
Bayshore Community Hospital. The
outstanding and compassionate care
she received on her road to recovery
is made possible through philanthropic
support from donors like you.
Hundreds of Bayshore Community
Hospital employees showed their
support in 2011 during the “Catch the
Wave” Team Member Annual Fund.
In their first year participating as part of
Meridian Health, an impressive 40% of
Bayshore team members contributed,
pledging more than $34,000 to benefit
various departments and programs at
Bayshore Community Hospital.
Philanthropic support is vitally important to helping Meridian Health provide the most

The Fourteenth Annual Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations’
Gala, “A Celebration of Caring,” was held on November 19 at
a new venue, The MAC at Monmouth University in West Long
Branch, raising nearly $600,000 for the hospitals of Meridian
Health. A record sold out crowd of over 800 guests attended

Meridian Health Received System-Wide Grants in 2011 from…
• The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services provided $149,000 in funding to Meridian Health under the Regional
Emergency Preparedness Program, which provides resources and increased coordination among health care facilities in
the event of a major disaster.
• Cardinal Health awarded Meridian Health a $35,000 grant to implement an Operating Room (OR) Checklist in order to
strengthen the culture of safety and reduce turnaround times for OR procedures.
• T
he Walter and Louise Sutcliffe Foundation awarded $20,000 to Meridian Health to support the OFFER Program which
provides support to non-traditional students in nursing pre-requisite courses and formal nursing programs.
• The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, NJ Nursing Initiative, provided a $9,980 grant to Meridian Health and
Georgian Court University to pilot the SHARES program to support inter-professional clinical nursing education through
simulation-based experiential learning modalities.

We are excited to share with you that in 2012 Bayshore Community Hospital will unveil its Pediatric Care Center, an affiliate of
K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. With the opening of the Pediatric Care Center
at Bayshore, families in our community will experience the difference in how we approach emergency care for children.
HOSPICE
The Pediatric Care Center will be designed just
for children and will provide enhanced pediatric
care, through a team of advanced practice pediatric
nurses, emergency care trained nurse-practioners
and emergency medicine physicians, to meet the
unique medical needs of each child that comes
through our door. Should a child require more
acute care, a seamless transition to K. Hovnanian
Children’s Hospital will be provided through
specialized pediatric transport.
A need had been identified in our area for emergent pediatric services at Bayshore Community Hospital and with the support
of our community, it has become a reality. The Pediatric Care Center at Bayshore will be open seven days a week, from 3:00
to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekends.
