Thoughts From The Governor
HELLO EVERYONE, Spring is here and it has been beautiful.
Spring revives us and we feel more energetic. April is
LCI's goal for asking people like us to join in helping
to improve our communities. With extra funds we can do
more.
We celebrated with the Nacogdoches Ladies Lions Club, the
newest Lions club in our district. These ladies are eager
to get going and I understand they have already got several
fund raisers begun.
Let’s talk about our district convention this month. April
18th at the Holiday Inn in Beaumont. We will have great
speakers for lunch and dinner. This is also the time to
vote on our new officers and directors. Come and show your
support and enjoy being with your fellow lions.
See you at the convention.

Mark Our Centennial With a Membership Drive
I didn’t know it at the time, but one of the greatest days of my life was the day a work colleague
invited me to a Lions meeting. My life changed forever and became infinitely more meaningful because someone had the courage, confidence and foresight to ask me to be a Lion. This month, as
part of our centennial celebration, I ask you to ask others to become a Lion.
Our centennial will be a lot of things to a lot of people—a celebration, a remembrance, a call to
further service. But it also will be a giant lever to ensure our vitality and service capability by increasing our membership. Strengthen the Pride by adding members and allowing others to discover the satisfaction, even joy, of service.
Our well-conceived Membership Awards program, part of our centennial celebration, began April
1 and ends June 30, 2018. We have a series of incentive awards for Lions and Lions clubs to sponsor new members and new clubs. Lions who sponsor new members or help organize new clubs
and clubs that induct new members or sponsor new clubs will receive beautiful limited edition
pins, certificates and banner patches. We know the true reward of advancing Lions’ mission of service is the pride and feeling of satisfaction among members. But at the same time we want to properly recognize Lions for their membership efforts. We relish it when we’re thanked for our service.
Consider these tokens of appreciation a giant thank-you from Lions Clubs International.
I know Lions always respond when asked, and I know Lions will do their very best to add to our
rolls so we can do even more service. I wish you happy hunting for members!

Is Your Search for New Members Based on a Prayer or a Plan?
By: Ed Stiles, 1st Vice District Governor
“Russians don't take a dump without a plan. And senior captains don't start something this dangerous
without having thought the matter through.” ~ Fred Thompson, as Admiral Josh Painter in the film
“The Hunt for Red October.
When your club is seeking new members or ways to retain existing ones, do you have a plan – a membership plan? So many clubs sit idly and hope and pray that a potential new member will magically
appear at the meeting room door and be ready to join. Well, fellow Lions “that ain’t gonna happen.”
Need an assist in getting started on developing a plan? Try on this Sample Membership, Recruitment, and Retention Plan for size. Use it as a template for your club.

Updates to Club Listings on District Website Requested
Each club is asked to review the accuracy of its information that’s located on the District’s website and
submit any needed corrections. Go to www.district2s1.org and click on the Club Listing link on the
left hand side. If corrections are needed, or if your club is not listed at all, send an email with the correct and complete information (officer contacts, meeting location and frequency, website, etc.) to our

Let Your Club’s Light Shine
Lions are the best kept secret around. Why is that? I believe we don’t toot our own horns, and let people know
we are working hard for our communities. We need to spread the word. We can accomplish this by taking some
easy steps in publicizing.
Why should we publicize our clubs?
So that our communities are aware of our presence
To continue attracting new members
To gain recognition for our community service projects
To recognize the efforts of our club members
How do you publicize your club?
Here are some effective methods you can use to publicize the great things you are doing for your community:
Participation in Local events- being visible
Parades
Food Shelters
Local Celebrations and festivities
Clean ups
Visible projects (White Cane, Mop and Broom, Eye-Screenings, School events, Disasters)
Invite newspapers to cover events or in this day of I-phones, take a picture and email it with a short article to
your paper
Invite local dignitaries to attend and present at award ceremonies
Place ads with monthly notices in papers regarding meeting dates and activities (weekly calendar) Post on
Community websites dates of your activities
Word of mouth- Every member should be an ambassador to promote our events and our organization. Share
information about our organization. Invite your friends to join a great organization because you don’t want
anyone to miss the fun!
Make sure the local paper reports on honors and activities accomplished by any members (prizes, scholarships,
P AGE 6
V OLUME 14 I SSUE 10
record book awards, etc.)
Send out fliers and brochures at schools ,doctor’s offices, churches, or local businesses detailing projects including dates and times (Any place people have to sit and wait)
TV/Radio advertisement- Your local radio station will normally make free community service announcements
Use the Internet, Facebook, twitter, my space, Blogs, announcements on local community web pages, evite,
and email your area clubs. If your club has a website or Facebook page, be sure it is updated and current.
Generate an on-line buzz
Post flyers, fact sheets, posters, brochures and banners in public places
Set up an information table or booth in high traffic local events. Talk to people. Share materials and pertinent information.
Ask your churches, county, or city officials to post on billboards and in bulletins your club projects, dates, and
times
Put your pictures in the paper after every project or special meetings
Wear it! Wear your Lions Club vest, t-shirts, caps, jackets that show our logo. Your car window is a great
place to put a Lions Logo sticker. You can also buy a license plate that sports our Texas Lions Camp and
advertises The Lions Club.
Remember, most of the time, our local medias are looking for interesting stories on varied topics. Bragging on
one’s self is not easy, but we need to share with the world the splendid works that our Lions Clubs offer to our
communities. We need to expose the best kept secret!

2nd Vice District Governor
New Facebook Page for District 2-S1
Our District has a new Facebook presence! It is a “closed group”, meaning that you’ll have to send a
request to join, but that is very easy to do by clicking on a ‘request to join’ tab right there on the home
page.
Do a Facebook search for District 2-S1 Lions of Texas, or copy and paste this link into your web
browser. https://www.facebook.com/groups/district2s1/
The previous District Facebook page is still active, so be sure that you search for the new group and not
the previous page. The new group will have the District 2-S1 logo (as illustrated below) at the top.
We hope that you will use the new Facebook presence to inform others in our District about what’s
happening in your club and to have open discussions and sharing of ideas among our 2-S1 Lions.

To: All Club Presidents and Secretaries
From: IPDG Waldo Dalchau
Subject: Governor’s Club Service Award
I want to encourage each and every Lions Club in our District to participate in the Governor’s Club Service
Award contest. We have many outstanding Lions Clubs in our District. As your club’s secretary and/or treasurer
you can submit a summary of your club’s accomplishments for the 2014-2015 Lions year. Refer to the check sheet
in the Governor’s Club Service Award packet including pictures, newspaper articles and any other documentation you feel will help support that you are the best Lions Club in the district for 2014-2015. Even if you place as
a runner-up club in the district, all clubs together show the collective strength of the clubs in our district. I think
this should make the District Governor proud of every Lions Club in District 2-S1.
This contest runs the full length of the Lions year and the deadline for your summary to be submitted is June 30,
2015. The award will be presented at the first Cabinet meeting in Corrigan TX, in July-2015. Please refer to the
packet in the newsletter for the rules.
I encourage every club to highlight your club’s accomplishments and service to your community for this current
Lions year. Serve and roar like a Lion.
Yours in service and Lionism,
IPDG Waldo Dalchau

is chosen as a winner, it will be announced at the First Cabinet Meeting of the following year.

“April is LEO Club Awareness Month. What a great time to expand and strengthen our LEO program.
If your community does not have a LEO Club, why not start one? Or maybe you need to consider what
your Lion's Club can do to support your Leos. Invite a Leo to come speak to your club, hold a joint service project, or host a luncheon or dinner for them. The possibilities are endless, and so are the opportunities.” ~ Joe Preston, Lions International President
Silsbee High School Leo Club
In March, the Silsbee Leo Club has several events planned. Leos visited Silsbee Oaks Nursing
Home for St. Patrick's Day, had a food booth to help raise money for the school year book, and
helped the Silsbee Lions Club to host their annual Pancake Supper fundraiser.
In April, the Silsbee Leo Club will be visiting the local nursing homes for Easter, participate in the
Texas Trash off through TXDOT Adopt a Highway program and attend the District 2-S1 conference in Beaumont.

LCI Changes Financial Suspension Policy
LCI views club fiscal responsibility as a principal element to encourage membership growth. As a result, the Financial Suspension Policy has been amended as follows:
Currently, clubs have 120 days to pay outstanding balances before they are in jeopardy of automatically being placed on suspension. Effective July 1, 2015, clubs will have 90 days. Cancellation will
continue to occur after the 28th of the month following suspension if full payment is not received. However, clubs canceled more than twice will be ineligible for reactivation.
This amended policy has serious consequences for clubs that have traditionally paid their club balances
in excess of 90 days. To prepare for this amendment, we recommend all club officers become familiar
with the amended policy and prepare to schedule payments as required. Officers should also prepare to
review and update membership by visiting www.lionsclubs.org and consider paying online.
Please feel free to contact LCI at [email protected] should you require additional information. We trust all clubs will review their statements regularly, and will send the necessary payments to ensure their active status is protected.

Zone Chairs Needed for 2015-2016
District 2-S1 is looking for a few loyal Lions who would be interested in taking on the role of Zone
Chair for the 2015-2016 Lions year. Zone Chairs serve as the liaisons between the District Governor and the clubs each Zone, keeping the Governor aware of any health issues of the clubs in that
Zone and facilitating communication and the sharing of ideas between the clubs.
It is preferable that the Lion has already held, or is currently holding, the position of a Club President, but someone could still serve as a Zone Chair if he/she plans to hold a Club President position in the next couple of years.
In addition, if someone is considering eventually running for District Vice Governor and then Governor in the future, then he/she must have completed at least one year as a Zone Chair.
Zone Chair positions are available in all parts of our District. If you would like to volunteer or discuss what’s involved in assuming one of these positions, please contain First Vice District Governor
Ed Stiles as soon as possible at 979-236-1209.
District 2-S1 Workday
Texas Lions Camp
March 28, 2015
On March 28, 2015 Lions from District 2-S1 gathered at Texas Lions Camp, Kerrville, Texas to prepare the
camp for the thousands of children we serve each summer. Our assigned task was to prepare and serve
breakfast and lunch for the other Lions who were participating in the workday. There were approximately 500 registered Lions workers from across the State of Texas. Those clubs that donated to the Workday Fund made it possible for us to purchase the needed supplies and food to complete our task and those
who volunteered their time to come prepare and serve the food made the project a success.
All clubs who participated (either financially or with workers or both) are entitled to claim as a service
project for Youth the serving of 1500 kids of this project. This should be reported on your WMMR report
to LCI.
A special thanks to all the District 2-S1 workers who came to Kerrville and made this project such a success. You did an OUTSTANDING JOB!.

The Century Club program came into being in 1983. Many of the original fifty-nine (59) Charter

committed to this great effort after three (3) generations. Many of them are now in the process of
completing their 4th generation (40 years).
Now in March of 2015, the Century Club members have grown to over 1624. Along with the
1524 children that we served in 2014, a big thank you to the Lions and others that have made the
Century Club grow. We have touched the lives of many children since the birth of the Texas
Lions Camp in 1949 and we have served over 65,000 children that have been served because
YOU Care!
With new Lions coming into the organization each year, we need to tell them of this wonderful
program and the benefits of continuing to serve the children.
You Can Help Make This Possible

Sunset Grove Country Club
The course at Sunset Grove, 2900 sunset Drive,
Orange, Texas, was designed by famed Scottish
born golf architect Donald Ross. Ross designed
over 400 courses in the United States, but only 3
in Texas. Mr. Ross’s most famous course is
Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. Mr. Ross’s
goal for each course was to make each golf hole
present a different problem, to arrange the
course so that every stroke must be made with a
full concentration and attention necessary to
good golf and to build each hole in such a manner that it wastes none of the ground at one’s
disposal and takes advantage of every possibility.
Today, the course is the only Donald Ross
course left in Texas that still uses the original
design. The original Donald Ross plans are
framed and hung in the Club House. The only
changes that have been made are the addition
of cart paths and a watering system.

As Chairperson of your Lions Clubs International
Foundation (LCIF), I have the privilege of traveling
the globe to see the amazing work Lions are doing.
Every day, you provide disaster relief, empower
our young people and serve our communities. You
also remain committed to saving sight. Whether
you are conducting vision screenings, providing
eyeglasses or medicine, you are giving the gift of
sight. Together with LCIF and partners like The
Carter Center, Lions have helped to restore sight
to 7.7 million people through cataract surgeries;
prevented serious vision loss for more than 30 million; provided over 271 million treatments for
river blindness; built or expanded 660 eye care
hospitals and clinics; and trained 681,000 eye care
specialists and eye health workers. Congratulations,
Lions! As we celebrate these achievements, know
that there is still much work to be done. With your
contribution, LCIF will be able to support Lions all over the world who continue making a positive
