Summer 2013 Newsletter - Berks County Public Libraries
Summer 2013
Volume 14, Issue 2
The Newsletter of the Friends of Mifflin Community Library
Have you joined or renewed your
“Friends of MCL” membership for 2013?
Your “Friends” membership dues are very
important and appreciated, but in addition, we
hope that you will be able to become involved
in some of the many fundraising events that our
group sponsors during the year.
Maybe you only have an hour here and there, and
that is okay. Every little bit helps. We need you!
We need enthusiastic, passionate members to help
raise money and support our programs. We are
especially in need of young, energetic Friends who
will continue our legacy.
If you love our library, simply complete our
application form on page 2 of this newsletter and
drop it off at the Circulation Desk or mail it to the
library.

a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less
because of that missing drop.—Mother Teresa

Fundraiser.
All work and no play?
We don’t think so! Reserve a
seat now for our New York City

much to do in New York for the
reasonable price of only $45.
The bus will drop off and then
pick us up at Bryant Park.
NEXT MEETING
JULY 10 @ 1:00PM
Book
& Bake
Sale
The Fall Book & Bake Sale is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 24th,
25th & 26th. We will start collecting approximately 2 weeks before
those dates. We are desperately in need of able-bodied folks to help
to move books which have been donated each day downstairs for
sorting and to “clean up” on Sat. Oct. 26th after the sale around
2:00 PM.
Each year everyone looks forward to this successful event.
However, it takes a lot of help to make it happen, and we need
helpers who are willing to commit to just an hour or two. If we all
share the responsibility, we’re sure to have another great year!
Please leave your name with someone working at the circulation
desk or call Linda Suklje at 610-775-1742 if you can help in any
way during the sale.

WHO IS SHE? Elizabeth Shepley, Programs/PR Coordinator
You may have noticed a new face around the library or at the Downton
Abbey Tea Party. Elizabeth joined the library staff in March of this year, and
she jumped right in full force! In addition to the usual PR materials such as
signs and bookmarks, news about the MCL is more noticeable in all area
publications. Elizabeth is also hard at work on Summer Reading Program and
Summer Concert Series materials.
At home, Elizabeth has a husband, two young children, Piper (age 10) and
Linus (age 5), two cats, and a very energetic husky. She flatters herself a
writer, though, with these guys, there is very little time for writing. She is
finding pleasure in writing the many press releases for the Library as well as
a monthly newspaper column on MCL happenings for The Southern Berks
News. Elizabeth also enjoys creating various arts and crafts projects, and she
is an active volunteer with the Cumru Girl Scouts.
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
LIBRARY PROGRAM SCHEDULE
Adult Programs
Stitching Group Every Monday, 6:30-8:00 pm*
*Except holidays when the library is closed.
There are currently between 12-15 members who sew, knit, and crochet. New
stitchers are always welcome. In addition to working on personal projects, the
group stitches projects for non-profit organizations such as the Reading Hospital
and area animal shelters. Come join us for loads of fun and stitching!
Mifflin Writers’ Group 1st & 3rd Thursday of every month, 6:30-8 pm**
**Subject to change for summer-please see online events calendar for information.
The Writer’s Group is for fiction writers to encourage each other to practice
and polish their craft. All who write for their own enjoyment, as well as those
who regularly publish their work, are welcome. If there is a collective interest
in a nonfiction group, this subgroup will resume meeting on the 2nd & 4th
Thursdays. Please let us know if you are interested.
Afternoon Book Group
All concerts run 6-8 PM in Mohnton Memorial Park Bandshell.
Rain location: St. John’s Parish House, Mohnton
Bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy free concerts. Park snack bar will be open.
JUNE 9TH Sweet Harmony
Suzanne and Dan are a pair of singers with an eclectic
mix of mostly folk tunes that include a sprinkling
of cowboy songs, old timey music and a few oldies.
Dan plays the guitar and Suzanne a banjolele. The
instruments, however, are secondary to their vocals.
JULY 14TH Marc Silver & The Stonethrowers
The Stonethrowers blend a passion for original and
traditional songs with a unique mix of country and
popular music. Lead singing with great vocal character
and seamlessly blended three-part vocal harmonies
fill out their energetic delivery. This Stonethrowers
performance will make you feel like you are a guest in
a good friend’s living room.
AUGUST 18TH Charlie Zahm
Charlie sings for the storytellers of yore who put the joys
and sorrows of their lives to music and the children and
grandchildren who kept those stories and songs alive through
the centuries. Celtic, maritime and folk music.

HOW TO DONATE
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Inching Ever Closer
The Giving Tree is located
in the vestibule by the front
doors. A gift of $500 includes
an engraved leaf where you
can memorialize or honor a
loved one.
If you enjoy using the Mifflin Community Library, please consider making a
contribution to help pay off the building fund.
The library completed an expansion and renovation project when two new
sections were opened in March 2008.
Permanent Plaques
Gifts of $1,000 or more are
recognized on the permanent
plaques near the circulation desk.
We are continuing to appeal to the community for donations to this project
because we would like to pay off the present mortgage and once again own the
building outright. Future fundraising efforts could then be used to build our
book, DVD and audio collection, build technology resources, such as
computers, and offer more programs for the community.
Monetary pledges and donations of every size are appreciated.
Make checks payable to Mifflin Community Library. Please mail your donation
to: Mifflin Community Library CCII, 6 Philadelphia Ave., Shillington, PA 19607
