From Our Principal…
Dear Friends of SJE,
It is with gratitude that we present you with the 2011-2012 Annual Report. We are proud
of the great accomplishments of the past year noted within the pages of this report. SJE
possesses a long legacy of excellence in academics. Our rigorous curriculum and
outstanding faculty/staff place SJE among the top schools in the nation for high
academic performance. The true value of a good Catholic education, however, is found in
the rich spiritual environment. At SJE, Jesus is in the center of all that we do. Both
components are necessary to fully nurture the God-given potential of each child.
Through your generous support, you contribute to our mission of preparing students for
everlasting life. Grounded in Reverence, Respect, and Responsibility, SJE forms
well-rounded, faith-filled leaders, fully prepared academically and spiritually for the
challenges and opportunities ahead of them. Your financial gift helps SJE keep tuition
affordable for all, provides resources and technological advances necessary for
strong, innovative academic programs, and develops students on fire with the love of
Christ!
Thank you for all the ways you support SJE. May God bless each one of you!
Karen Vogtner
Principal
St. John the Evangelist Catholic School is a two-time National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence
founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1954. The Sisters remained at SJE until 1988 when Sallie
McQuaid became the first lay principal. Our school has continued to grow since 1954 and now
offers full-day Pre K through 8th Grade where our students are provided a Christ-centered and
academically challenging environment. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools (SACS), the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). We are members of
GA Independent Schools Association (GISA), Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools
(AAAIS), the National Middle School Association (NMSA), and the National Catholic Educational
Association (NCEA).
Our 320 students come from 231 families commuting from 38 zip codes, represent over 25
countries, and speak more than 15 native languages. The St. John School community remains
predominantly Catholic with 23 parishes represented. Nine faculty and staff members are SJE
graduates and 30 are current parents or parents of alumni. 75% of our staff members either have
advanced degrees or are currently enrolled in an advanced degree program.

We think it is necessary and shows our support for Catholic schools. We feel the
school deserves our support so we can help them continue educating our children.
Grandparents of Kamryn and Kenneth Days
Pledges
Do you know how much you would like to give but are not ready to make your gift in one
immediate payment? You can make a pledge at any time and fulfill the pledge any time before
June 30. Payments may be made in installments or a one-time payment.
Cash Gifts
Cash gifts include those made by check, credit card, electronic funds transfer, or payroll
deduction. Cash gifts can be made via mail, walk-in, or online using a credit card.
Online Giving
Make a credit card gift online by visiting our website, www.sjecs.org, and clicking the “Donate
Now” button.
Matching Gifts
Many companies offer gift-matching programs that can make your gift go further by matching
your contribution. Ask your company’s Human Resources department or contact the SJE
Development Office to see if your company will double or even triple your original gift.
Stocks and Securities
Gifts of stocks, securities, or bonds are a wonderful way to contribute and avoid paying capital
gains tax on the appreciation. Please contact the Development Office for assistance.
Honorarium and Memorial Gifts
Make a gift in honor or in memory of a friend or family member who held St. John School close
to their heart or made a significant contribution to the SJE community. All cash gifts may be
made in honorarium or memoriam.

The SJE Home & School Committee does amazing things! The Race for Education is a fantastic way
for the student (and teachers) to raise money and get active at the same time. By collecting flat
donations or per-lap sponsorship, our runners have a day full of fun-raising AND fund-raising. The
Black & White Auction is a lovely event that provides an opportunity for the SJE community to
come together for food and fun. The event features a silent auction with items like theater/sports
tickets, vacation packages, Game Night baskets, and even a golf bag signed by Archbishop Gregory!
The main event is the live auction, which includes high-demand items like reserved seats to the
Christmas Musical, student art, tuition certificates, and the highly coveted First Spot in Carline.
Home & School also sponsors many community-building events like Mother/Son Bowling, the
Father/Daughter Dance, Sandwich Making, and the SJE 5K.
We hope you will get involved with our active Home & School Committee. There is always something
exciting going on!

Jesus told us what we do for the least
of his brothers, we do for him. It helps us
to be Christ-like.
I give to remind me of how I can develop
as a student and an individual as a
result of the opportunities given to
me at SJE.
Many of our 2012 Graduates attend Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School and St. Pius
X Catholic High School. SJE Alumni have gone on to attend such fine colleges and
universities as Emory, Duke, Columbia, Georgia Tech, and the Air Force Academy.
Chibueze Emefo ’11 was recognized by The National Society of High School Scholars.
Geno Finn ’04 graduated from Ave Maria University with B.A.s in Philosophy and Theology.
Adam Rose ’08 was featured in an article in Game Day Magazine outlining his academic
achievements and excellence in football, basketball, and soccer. He gave what the
AJC referred to as one of last football season’s most dominating all-around
performances.
Megan Malasarte ’04 set a UGA record in the 800 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field
Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Jeffrey Obiora ’04 graduated Pre-Med from Emory University.
Andrew Nemchik ’04 graduated last spring from Georgia Tech.
Cybil Agu ’04 graduated from Duke.
Josh Woolums ’08, who was the Valedictorian of his SJE graduating class, was named
Valedictorian of the Our Lady of Mercy Class of 2012.
Adaorah Odogwu ’08 received an Outstanding Achievement in Physical Fitness Award at SPX.
Alexis White ’08 was named both Youth of the Year at St. John the Evangelist Church and Gulf
Coast District Daughter of the Year for the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary.
The following students made the Honor Roll last year at OLM: Paul Hoang ’11, Karen Loncke
’08, Elizabeth Wolfe ’11, Brenda Quan ’11, Bianca Laplanche ’11, Minh Bui ’11, Elon Yates
’11, Rachel Jinks ’10, Essai Flores ’10, Katie Wilczynski ’10, Nneoma Njoku ’10, Michael
Andrews, Jr. ’10, Tyler Todd ’10, Rachel Barfield ’10, Christine Moran ’10, Jenny Bui ’09,
Emily Longino ’09, Huy Trinh ’09, Jamie Morgan ’09, Bockarie Amara ’09, Rocio Salamanca
’09, Matthew Frank ’09, and Jarrett Goodly ’09.
The following students made the Principal’s List last year at SPX: Kevin Lieu ’11, and Kevin
Jones ’10. Andrew Jacon ’11 made the Dean’s List and the following students made the Honor
Roll: Stephen Jacon ’11, Jennifer Nguyen ’10, and Adaorah Odogwu ’08.
And they will soar on wings like eagles…
