Goff's Introduces New
Low Maintenance High Speed Door
WISCONSIN - In an effort to provide a low maintenance, customized high
speed roll-up door at an affordable price, Goff’s Enterprises has released
a new line of doors, the G-2 Door. According to the company, easily
replaceable, exchangeable panels available in vinyl, mesh, and clear PVC
allow users to replace or exchange sections of the door with the changing
seasons without down time or destruction to the door.
Featuring a wind load rating of 45 mph on a 10’x10’ door,
G-2 Doors automatically reset after impact or blow out. Goff’s uniquely
created fiberglass extrusions slide securely in custom extruded aluminum
side beams in a variety of manual and motorized operations including:
chain hoist, 12” per second, 24” per second, and 36” per second. Other
features include: a reverse safety feature, welded seams, and EPDM
rubber side seals and baffle.
Goff’s G-2 Door line was adapted from research and
communication with users and distributors. “Like in any business, the
customers know what works best for them,” states Tony Goff, President
of Goff’s Enterprises. “Using their feedback and requests we have
developed a door that is not only functional and low maintenance but
also affordable.”
Goff’s Enterprises manufactures the curtain wall. Started in
1987, Goff’s has now extended its product line to include curtain walls,
welding curtains and screens, high speed industrial vinyl and mesh
roll-up doors, strip doors, noise control products, and food processing
curtains.

CASE 19-5 ANSWER:
When GDN Doors opened nearly thirty years ago it was, like its owner,
young and aggressive. The company went after all kinds of business,
but really concentrated on the new housing market. They installed a
significant number of doors in the city and surrounding area.
As years passed and GDN Doors expanded its commercial
base, the company's share of the new housing market decreased. Also,
instead of concentrating on the new housing market, the company
had gradually begun selling replacement doors and parts for the same
houses that it had originally installed doors on as new houses.
This follow-up market proved to be lucrative. In fact, the
management of GDN Doors considered the thousands of doors in the
city that had GDN Doors stickers as assets - sure to bring in future
sales. And for a long time, that held true.
But the original new houses are now growing old. Some were
still owned and occupied by the original owners, but most were not.
And the garage door turnover in that once lucrative market is quickly
slowing.
Most of the housing subdivisions built over the past ten years
had doors supplied by other door installation companies. This means
that the word-of-mouth that was so important to GDN Doors in the
past has had a decreasing impact on its current sales. The majority of
residential sales are now based on low price replacement door sales.
As such, margins are declining.
What can be done to remedy the situation?
Without doubt, one of the easiest ways to get residential service work
is to install the door in the first place. A sticker on a door is an asset, as
was highlighted in the case. But when a company matures and does less
and less new housing (possibly because they find the margins too low
compared to other work they are doing), that source of leads declines.
There are two different strategies that can be followed. Firstly, a
company can strive to always service the same target market. This would
mean that a residential company continues to think "new housing first"
and renovation second. They would try to always service that market
niche.
Or a company can choose to grow older with their customers. This
means that the first door that they sell a particular family may be a lowend wood or steel door. As the family grows, they replace the springs,
maybe repair a section. Eventually that same family buys a better house
or desires a better door. That same family needs a garage door opener.
The first strategy is one where you want to become a product
specialist. You'll know the key players in new housing, and the key
suppliers. You will sell on volume and buy on volume. You will sell on
price and buy on price.
The second strategy is one where you focus on the customer, and
endeavor to keep them for life. At each stage of their life they will have
different needs, all of which you will service. But once that group no
longer needs enough doors to keep you busy, you need to have a second
group on the way up.
CASE 19-6: The Cost of an Inexpensive Location
Twelve years ago, when Bill took
over as General Manager of GDN
Doors, he was brought in with a
mandate to increase profitability.
In fact, the specific direction from
the company owner was even more
specific: “I don’t care if we increase
our annual sales or remain stable,
but we need more profit.”
To accomplish this goal,
Bill followed two tactics. First, he
did go after increased sales volume.
Rather than focusing exclusively on
higher margin work, Bill believed
that increased sales volume spread
the fixed costs over a broader revenue base.
Bill’s second tactic was to
attack costs. For example, he found
ways to reduce the company’s use
of fuel through better planning of
installation and service work schedules. He also negotiated lower rates
from his suppliers on a few strategic
items. He also moved the company
from its original shop to a shop on
the outskirts of the city, thereby reducing rent costs significantly.
Around the same time that the Rolling Grille was made, Thomas Edison
was introducing the world to
incandescent lighting. If you think
that was a bright idea...

It was this final move that
Bill was now questioning. While it
had been a good cost cutting move
ten years earlier, it was now proving to be a competitive disadvantage. GDN Doors had gradually
increased its exposure in the residential sector. They found that homeowners were increasingly hesitant to travel outside the city unless
they knew that they were going to
make a purchase on that visit. This
has been exasperated lately because
a major competitor has been adver-
tising their location as a major benefit: “In the heart of the city!”
Bill estimates that moving
to a homeowner friendly location
will substantially increase the cost
of rent. But he is also concerned
that failing to move will come at an
even higher cost – the loss of sales.

Miller Edge Launches
D-I-Y Electric Sensing Edge
for Commercial Doors
PENNSYLVANIA - Miller Edge introduced the new CPT-223 Electric Sensing Edge kit at
the International Door Association Expo in Las Vegas. The CPT-223 allows commercial door
technicians to assemble the product and allows them to upgrade customers to an electric edge
sensor while on-site.
The CPT-223 product
consists of flexible extrusion, end
caps and glue. To assemble, the
extrusion is cut to size, then end
caps are inserted into the cavities
and glued to provide a weather
tight seal. The product is easily
installed on doors with accepting
bottom bar configurations or,
with any Miller Edge ME-123
mounting channel.
The extrusion incorporates
a new conductive polymer
technology to provide the switching function. CPT-223 is available in 14 foot (4.2m) and 22 foot
(6.7m) kits, or in bulk rolls of 50-foot (15.2m) lengths.

Amarr Expands

Color Offering
NORTH CAROLINA - In April, Amarr Garage
Doors added two new colors to some of its
residential steel collections. According to Vickie
Lents, Amarr’s Residential Category Director,
these additions will meet consumer demand and
are the result of numerous requests from Amarr
dealers.
Almond is being added to Amarr’s most
popular Classica Collection that is currently
available in white, sandtone, and dark woodgrain.
Almond will be available in all construction
types of Classica.
Terratone, a color which matches the
Terratone color found in siding, windows, and
other exterior building products, is being added
to the Oak Summit Carriage House Collection
and the Stratford Collection. It too will be
available in all three construction types of
single-layer, double-layer, and triple-layer of
these collections.

Added to Curriculum
at Linear University
New Knowledge-Sharing Program Also
Announced, Putting More Answers Online
CALIFORNIA - Linear recently announced its 2010 schedule of training
programs for professional dealers and installers through the company’s
Linear University.
One- to three-day training sessions have been scheduled for the
following product lines: Personal Emergency Response Systems; Audio/
Video/Data; Intercom and Air Vac; Keypads and Secured Products;
eMerge Access Control Solutions; and,Access Control and Gate Operators.
Classes are held at the state-of-the-art training facility at Linear corporate
headquarters in Carlsbad, CA. All classes are taught by Linear's technical
training team.
“Our on-site sessions are purposely designed to be extremely
interactive, so customers gain optimum value from them,” says Gary
Baker, vice president of marketing at Linear. “As such, we limit class sizes
to eight people, and allow for personal interaction with the instructors over
meals, breaks and throughout the courses.”
New Webinar Option
This year, the company has added webinar training -- a new
and convenient way for customers to learn remotely. “We realize that
our customers are not always able to travel for class sessions,” explains
Baker. “To best accommodate those who want to learn but cannot attend
in person, we have invested in this new, remote learning program, with a
live instructor and opportunity for questions.”
Linear customers also have the option for self-study -- training at
their own pace using the company’s online training courses, which include
knowledge assessment tools.
When participants meet the requirements for satisfactory completion
of any of the training programs, they receive a certificate indicating the
program title, the instructor, and where applicable, the number of CEU
units earned.
Knowledge-Base Software on Linear Web Site
Linear’s Technical Support Group is implementing a web-based
program that will greatly benefit dealers, distributors, installers, and
employees alike. The tool, Interspire Knowledge Manager (knowledge
base software), enables the technical support staff to document an issue
and provide answers to commonly-asked questions. The information is
then posted to the knowledge base section of the Linear web site (http://
www.linearcorp.com/faq/) for easy access to anyone who needs technical
support assistance.
“This program should cut down on technical support calls, and
provide installers with answers to time-sensitive questions without waiting
on hold for technical support,” stated David Waters, Linear’s manager of
technical services. “It will also benefit all Linear employees in answering
technical questions as needed.”

Dealer Development
Managers
WISCONSIN - Goff’s Enterprises announced
the hiring of two dealer development managers.
Operating from his Los Angles based office, Joey Goff, brother of President Tony Goff,
will cover the country west of the Mississippi
river. Joey has been an independent Goff’s Representative for over 14 years.
Based in Stuart, FL, Rob Innes will cover states east of the Mississippi river. Rob has
been in the material handling and door industry
for over 15 years.

of the control box is an integrated three-button control
station that can help speed up installation and provide
easy access when troubleshooting. The VSL 595 is
also outfitted with an external reset button, offering a
simple, quick and convenient option when resetting
the operator after the alarm has been activated.

Adding to the list of standard features on this
unit, such as a built-in 312HM radio receiver, an
adjustable timer and a two-year warranty, this heavy
duty slide gate operator is powered by the LiftMaster
gate logic (GL) board. The gate logic board controls
a fully adjustable inherent obstruction detection
system, meaning that if the gate strikes an obstruction,
a closing gate will reverse to open and an opening
gate will stop. This system also provides inputs for
external contact and non-contact sensors such as
photo-eyes and edge devices that are synonymous
with LiftMaster product safety features.

Blue Giant Joins US Green
Building Council
ONTARIO - Blue Giant’s dock equipment
solutions can now contribute toward
favorable LEED certification for its many
customers.
Blue Giant joined the U.S. Green
Building Council (USGBC) in February
of 2010. The USGBC is a non-profit
organization that advocates environmentally
friendly building construction and design.
One of its initiatives is the LEED building
rating system, which the organization
website defines as “a third-party certification
program and the nationally accepted
benchmark for the design, construction
and operation of high-performance green
buildings.”
LEED recognizes performance
in five key areas: sustainable site
development, water efficiency, energy
efficiency, materials selection, and indoor
environmental quality. Certification is
based on the total point score achieved
across these five categories. It allows
builders and developers
to take advantage of a
growing number of state
and local government
incentives, and can help
boost press interest in
their projects.

Amarr Moves
Production of
Polyurethane-Insulated
Line to Kansas
NORTH CAROLINA - Amarr Garage Doors recently announced the
transition of the polyurethane-insulated production line from New Jersey
to Lawrence, Kansas was completed on time. Amarr produces both
residential and commercial polyurethane doors in a variety of styles. Many
Amarr Door Centers are stocked with FIP product to meet most dealers’
needs and are offering same day service for dealers that pick up from the
Door Centers. Special orders for non-stock doors are available from the
plant in three weeks or less.
Moving the line from New Jersey to Kansas allowed Amarr to
streamline its supply chain and provided its dealers with faster lead times
and better product availability. The transition allows Amarr to offer the
garage door industry a comprehensive FIP line of residential Traditional
panel doors and Carriage House designs, in both high-end and economical
models, in a variety of styles and colors. Amarr’s Classica 3000 door is also
a polyurethane product and has always been manufactured in Kansas.
Amarr’s top-of-the-line high R-value doors designed exclusively
for the commercial and architectural market, Models 2700 and 1350, were
included in the transition and are in stock at Amarr’s 70 Door Centers.

Garage Door Safety Lessons Important

OHIO - Clopay has added Chocolate to its palette of standard color
offerings on most models in its Gallery Collection vintage style steel door
line, including the three-layer polystyrene insulated doors, pan and paninsulated models, and all WindCode models except W8. Most window
options are also available in this new color.
The Gallery Collection’s signature look consists of both long and
short grooved panels constructed from heavy gauge steel embossed with a
woodgrain texture. The doors range in size from 6’ to 12’ high, and up to
20’ wide in white, almond, brown, the new chocolate, sandtone and two
Ultra-Grain finishes. They can also be painted.
Multiple design combinations are available featuring square,
rectangular and arched windows, with or without decorative grilles, and
popular wrought iron designs. Decorative black spade handles, a step plate
and outside, keyed lock enhance the vintage appearance.

YOUR CITY – As the weather warms up and children spend more
time outside, June is the ideal time to speak to children about garage
door safety. Garage doors are the largest moving part of a house, and
children are at risk as they use garage doors to get to bikes and toys.

launched its new 2010 Product
Reference Guide, offering new
products, a new look and an
improved layout design.
This new full-color, 200
page catalogue presents all product

Entry Systems Introduces
SpringTurner
COLORADO – Entry Systems introduced a torsion spring winding system, the SpringTurner,
at the IDA Expo in Las Vegas. The system is designed to provide a safe and fast way to wind
springs.
The unit, which can be used on residential, commercial or industrial spring assemblies,
includes a drum component, winding fingers and a main body. The system requires a five step
process. First, the drum is removed from the main body of the tool. Second, select the correct
size of winding fingers given
the spring assembly. Third, slide
the winding fingers separately
into the drum and position the
drum assembly over the garage
door shaft and cone, and then
slide the drum together. Fourth,
place the main body of the tool
around the drum and secure the
latch. Finally, wind the spring
by hand or drill.

Battery Gate
Operator
NEW YORK - PowerMaster recently introduced
the DBG operator at the International Garage Door
Expo in Las Vegas. The DBG is a single arm battery
operated barrier gate operator.
Standard features on the new unit
include a 24 VDC motor, 660+ cycles
on a full charge and onboard diagnostic LEDs.
The DBG also includes
individual open and close torque settings,
low battery shut down position selection
(open/close), post-mounted and an oil
bath gear reduced drive. Other features
include an open and close speed that is adjustable
from 2 to 7 seconds and a timer to close adjustable
from 1 second to 4 minutes. There is a time delay on
the reverse to ensure smooth gate motion and less
stress on the equipment. The UL approved DBG is

buildings to act as a thermal barrier
against extreme temperatures and

The Model 3700 Series
three-layer “sandwich” doors
feature environmentally safe,
CFC- and HCFC-free polyurethane
insulation foam injected between
two layers of galvanized steel,
with a thermal break, offering Rvalues of up to 17.2. There are
five models available in 1-3/8”,
1-3/4” and 2” panel thicknesses.
Four color choices and a variety of
glazing options are also offered.
A 32”x 80” pass door is
an option on the Clopay Model
3720 for applications that have
pedestrian traffic, and saves on
heating and cooling costs by
reducing the number of times
the sectional door needs to be
opened. The pass door is also

Too Many Choices?
New Study Says More Is
Usually Better
A
re we overloaded and
paralyzed by too many
choices, or is it good to
have so many options? A new
study in the Journal of Consumer
Research says the jury is still out on
so-called “choice overload.”
Authors
Benjamin
Scheibehenne (University of Basel,
Switzerland), Rainer Greifeneder
(University
of
Mannheim,
Germany), and Peter M. Todd
(Indiana University, Bloomington)
conducted a meta-analysis of
50 published and unpublished
experiments that investigated
choice overload. They found that
consumers generally respond
positively to having many choices.
“A number of studies in the
past found strong instances of choice
overload based on experiments
in laboratories and in the field.
While these results attracted a
lot of attention in academia as
well as in the media, a number of
experiments found no empirical
evidence for choice overload and
sometimes even found that more
choices instead facilitate choice and
increase satisfaction,” the authors
write.
Across the 50 experiments,
which depict the choices of 5,036
individual participants, the authors
found that the overall effect of choice
overload was virtually zero. “This
suggests that adverse consequences
do not necessarily follow from
increases in the number of options,”
the authors write. “In fact, contrary
to the notion of choice overload,
these results suggest that having
many options to choose from will,
on average, not lead to a decrease in
satisfaction or motivation to make a
choice.”
When it comes to food
consumption, for example, the
authors believe their metaanalysis
shows that a “more-is-better” effect
occurs, especially when individuals
have clear prior preferences.
A number of experiments
in the past did find that choice
overload exists, but the authors
found that it was difficult to
replicate those conditions.
“Based on our metaanalysis data, we could not
identify sufficient conditions
or specific circumstances that
explain when and why an
increase in assortment size can
be expected to reliably decrease
satisfaction, preference strength,
or the motivation to choose,” the
authors write.

Canadian Housing Activity to
Stabilize in 2010 and 2011
ONTARIO - Canadian housing starts
rebounded in the second half of 2009 and early
2010 and will stabilize over the next two years,
according to Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation’s (CMHC) second quarter Housing
Market Outlook, Canada Edition.
Following a total of 149,081 units in
2009, housing starts are expected to be in the
range of 166,900 to 199,600 units in 2010,
with a point forecast of 182,000 units. In 2011,
housing starts will be in the range of 148,600 to
208,800 units, with a point forecast of 179,600
units.
“Canadian housing markets have
recovered from the low levels posted
in early 2009,” said Bob Dugan, Chief
Economist for CMHC. “Moving forward,
housing starts will moderate as activity
becomes more in-line with long term
demographic fundamentals. New measures
for government-backed mortgage insurance
introduced by the Government of Canada
that took effect on April 19, 2010 will
continue to support the long-term
stability of Canada's housing market.”
Dugan also noted that the existing
home market will move toward balanced
conditions over the next two years as MLS
sales ease and inventory levels increase.
In late 2009 and early 2010, sales activity
included some pent-up demand from early
2009. Once this demand is exhausted, and
as mortgage rates gradually rise, the pace
of activity in the resale market will ease. As
a result, existing home sales will be in the
range of 484,000 to 513,300 units in 2010,
with a point forecast of 497,300 units, and
then move slightly lower in 2011 to be in
the range of 443,500 to 504,900 units, with
a point forecast of 473,500 units.
With an improved balance between
demand and supply, the average MLS price
is expected to stabilize through the end of
2010 and then rise modestly in 2011.
New US Residential Construction
in April
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Census Bureau
and the Department of Housing and Urban
Development jointly announced the following
new residential construction statistics for April
2010:
BUILDING PERMITS
Privately-owned housing units authorized by
building permits in April were at a seasonally
adjusted annual rate of 606,000. This is 11.5
percent (±1.1%) below the revised March
rate of 685,000, but is 15.9 percent (±1.3%)
above the revised April 2009 estimate of
523,000.
Single-family authorizations in April
were at a rate of 484,000; this is 10.7 percent
(±1.1%) below the revised March figure of
542,000. Authorizations of units in buildings
with five units or more were at a rate of 103,000
in April.
HOUSING STARTS
Privately-owned housing starts in April were at
a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 672,000.
This is 5.8 percent (±13.0%) above the revised
March estimate of 635,000 and is 40.9
percent (±19 8%) above the revised April
2009 rate of 477 000.
Single-family housing starts in
April were at a rate of 593,000; this is 10.2
percent (±10.7%) above the revised March
figure of 538,000. The April rate for units
in buildings with five units or more was
68,000.
HOUSING COMPLETIONS
Privately-owned housing completions in
April were at a seasonally adjusted annual
rate of 769,000. This is 19.2 percent
(±13.8%) above the revised March estimate
of 645,000, but is 8.7 percent (±12.8%)
below the revised April 2009 rate of
842,000.
Single-family housing completions
in April were at a rate of 564,000; this is
14.6 percent (±13.1%) above the revised
March figure of 492,000. The April rate for
units in buildings with five units or more
was 192,000.

OHIO - Clopay Commercial Products Group showcased the breadth,
quality and flexibility of its product
line, displaying several new models
as well as some unique custom colors and glazing options at the International Door Association Expo
in Las Vegas last month.
The company showcased
its Model 3700 Series threelayer “sandwich” door featuring
environmentally safe, CFC- and
HCFC-free polyurethane insulation
foam injected between two layers
of galvanized steel, with a thermal
break, offering R-values of up
to 17.2. There are five models
available in 1-3/8”, 1-3/4” and
2” panel thicknesses. Four color
choices and a variety of glazing
options are also offered.
A 32”x 80” integral pass
door option (Model 3720) was
shown for applications that have
pedestrian traffic, eliminating
the need to open the entire door.
Historically, a pass door creates a
weak point in a door. That isn’t the
case with the Clopay product, which
features a welded frame for added
section strength. The pass door
is also designed with continuous
geared hinge adding strength and
providing smoother operation of
the pass door.

The new Model 903 will have all
the same glazing, track, hardware,
reinforcement specifications and
options as the Models 902. All
models will have 18”, 21”, and
24” section heights and pricing
will remain the same as the current
models.
Standard color offerings
include clear, black, or bronze an-
odized finishes as well as white
or brown. Solid aluminum panels in finishes matching the frame
are also available. Capped tongue
and groove joints and a vinyl bottom weather seal keep out the elements.
The most striking feature of
the Model 903 is its glass design,
which allows people inside to see
through to the outdoors, but not
necessarily vice versa. There are
many window options available
to control the degree of light
transmission and privacy including
clear, opaque or mirrored glass,
laminate and polycarbonate panels.

Canadian April Housing Starts
ONTARIO - The seasonally adjusted annual
rate of housing starts was 201,700 units in April,
according to Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation (CMHC), up slightly from a revised
199,200 units in March.
“Higher multiple starts were nearly
offset by a decline in single starts and rural area
starts in April. As a result, total housing starts
edged higher in April,” said Bob Dugan, Chief
Economist at CMHC’s Market Analysis Centre.
The seasonally adjusted annual rate of
urban starts increased by 5.1 per cent to 182,500
units in April. Urban multiple starts increased
by 27.2 per cent to 98,600 units, while single
urban starts decreased by 12.7 per cent to 83,900
units.
April’s seasonally adjusted annual rate
of urban starts increased 16.4 per cent in British
Columbia, 6.7 per cent in the Prairie region, 4.5
per cent in Ontario, and 1.1 per cent in Quebec.
Urban starts decreased 3.3 per cent in Atlantic
Canada.
Rural starts were estimated at a seasonally
adjusted annual rate of 19,200 units in April.

QUESTION 1:
We have a unique problem that
for the life of my electronics
background, doesn't make sense
but it's real and strange at the same
time... and it's driving us bonkers!
I have two garage door
openers as I have two separate
garage doors. The remotes
mysteriously do not work
sometimes.... both of them. Our
alternatives are to unlock the house
front door and go through the house
to the garage and push the manual
button. It doesn't matter which car,
or remote we use, they all work or
don't work at the same time (with
either door).
So we were thinking it was
rather odd, but both garage door
openers are failing at the same
time. Or something worse.
Then I realized last night
that the problems occur mostly at
night or specifically between dusk
and dawn. Around the time that my
landscape lighting comes on. The
system has been in use for a couple
of years, but just recently I replaced
all of the quartz halogen bulbs with
LED to conserve energy and cut
down on bulb replacement. All of
the bulbs were purchased over the
internet from a variety of sources
(eBay). Some of the spot lights are
up to 6 watts of consumed power
so I suspect there is some circuitry
involved internally. But it appears
that once I've swapped out all of
the bulbs and the system comes
on at dusk, the garage door opener
remotes just do not want to work.
Freaky - almost like the aluminum
foil hat type of thing. Can anyone
explain this to me or am I thinking
of something that just can't happen
this way.
Any advice would help
- even those who think I must be
smoking something (I'm not... but
hey... it's still advice).

I made the mistake of replacing
the high-vibration incandescent
lamps in the garage door opener
with compact fluorescents, since
we were out of the special ones,
and I figured they'd last at least
as well (that part was right). And
promptly forgot that I did it.
Some time later, I noticed
that the door would go up from
the remote control but wouldn't
go down except manually. A bit
of a hassle, but I did it for a few
months before trying to fix it.
Strangely, as it turned out, if you
waited 5 minutes or so, the remote
would once again work to make the
door go down. Turns out that EMI
from the lamps was overwhelming
the RF front end and disabling
the receiver. The lamps went off
automatically from a timer, so the
remote would work again.
So, yes, the LED lamps
could well be causing your
problem even from some distance
away. Nothing freaky about it. You
could perhaps add some filtering
or dump the lamps or improve the
antenna.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 3:
Garage door openers tend to use
one of several different radio bands,
and are usually operated under the
terms of FCC Part 15 certification.
This means that (1) they're not
allowed to interfere with other
devices, and (2) they must accept
any and all interference from
other devices, whether licensed
or unlicensed. They're classified
as "intentional radiators" - they
transmit a low-power radio signal
by design.
LED lights of the sort you're
talking about, probably incorporate
a small "switching" power supply,
to step down the mains voltage
to the relatively low DC voltage
needed by the LEDs themselves.
These switching supplies can
generate a significant amount of RF
interference, which can be carried
back onto the AC power lines...
the manufacturers sometimes omit
adding the components necessary
to filter out the interfering RF
noise before it gets back onto
the power lines. These sorts of
devices also operate under Part 15,
as "incidental radiators" - they're
producing RF signals as a side
effect of their operation, not as an
intended behavior.
What you may be running
into is a situation in which one
or more of your LED lights are
generating enough RF interference
to jam the remote receiver in your
garage door opener. It's as if your
receivers were listening for the
whistling of the tune "Yesterday"
in order to operate, while sitting in
the middle of a boiler factory.
The first thing to do, to
confirm this hypothesis, would
be for you to switch off all of the
LED lights, and confirm that the
garage door opener works. Then,
turn the LED lights back on one at
a time, and figure out which one
(or which ones, in combination)
are generating enough RF hash
to block signal reception. If you
can determine what frequencies
your remote-control system uses,
you might be able to use a radio
scanner or receiver to detect the
interference.
It's quite possible that some
of the lights you're using don't
comply with the Part 15 emission
rules, and have not been tested and
certificated. There are quite a few
such devices on the market.

If this is your problem,
then you've got a few possible
ways to fix it:
- Figure out which lights are at
fault. Replace them with other
lights which don't generate such
interference.
- Replace the garage-door remote
system with one operating in a
different frequency band, which
isn't vulnerable to interference.
- Try filtering out the RF hash.
If it's mostly being conducted
over the power lines, you might
be able to install an interference
filter at the garage door opener's
power plug. If it's mostly radiated
interference, you'd have to install
filters at the individual light
sockets.
People sometimes run into
this sort of non-operation problem
from non-local causes. A large
percentage of the remote-control
fobs being sold in the U.S. today
operate in the 420-430 MHz radio
frequency range (433.920 MHz
is very common). This band of
frequencies has a "primary" user
- government radar installations
- and around some Air Force
bases, the radar signals are strong
enough to jam such remote control
systems for quite a few miles.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 3:
Good grief, I've been having the
same erratic problem: the garage
door will go up but won't close.
I overhauled all the mechanics,
cleaned the limit switches,
tweaked the big nasty dangerous

spring, all that. It appears to be a
control problem, not a mechanical
one. And after a while it started
working again. The receiver/
motor box is straddled by two light
sockets on the ceiling, with CFs,
derived from a motion sensor.
The bulbs inside the housing are
still incandescents.
Next time it acts up, I'll
try incandescents for the ceiling
lights.
QUESTION 1, RESPONSE:
Thanks everyone for the comments
and suggestions. This problem did
get resolved and the ultra bright
LED's that I was using in my front
yard were causing RF signal's to
block the garage door opener
remote from working properly. I
swapped them to the back yard
and used some other LED bulbs.
Funny though... These were
purchased via eBay but came
from a US distributor and not
overseas, so these were the last
ones that I suspected as causing
the problem.
QUESTION 2:
Any installation I'm aware of, the
door needs to be up to relieve the
pressure on the springs. Disconnect
the push/pull connecton and slide
the door the rest of the way back
and the cabling will hang loose
for you to work on. When a door
is closed, the springs are under
maximum tension. Otherwise
they wouldn't lift the door. And
you'll never find an easy way to

work with tensioned springs.
What am I missing?
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 1:
Nuh, uh; both are full extended
when the door is down. Also,
with a sectional door, the door
is going to bow and flop down
like shutters if the springs are
removed with the door down, and
worse if one end of a section is
out of the track, it'll completely
fall to the floor.
Now that I understand
you're only imagining things, I
see where you're coming from.
I would suggest you go look at
a few different garage doors and
watch how they operate. The
purpose of the springs is to lift the
door, so what positions could they
be in other than extended? Same
only more dangerous for torsion
springs over the doors.
Don't do it; it's very dangerous
and the springs can be lethal.
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 2:
Maybe
extension
springs?
Torsion springs would certainly
be difficult to replace with the
door open.
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 3:
Torsion springs are mounted
above the door. With the door
open you can't get to them, so
they have to be worked on with
the door closed and full tension
on them. That's why they're so
dangerous. Better springs, but
more dangerous to work on.
