Message from the Chairperson
The Board of Regents extends its best wishes and congratulations to the Spring Class of 2015
on the conferral of your degrees. The University community shares the joy and pride that you
have brought to your family and friends through your accomplishments. Your hard work
and dedication will continue to reap benefits for you, your island, your nation and the world!
The goal of the University is to prepare graduates to contribute to the growth and development
of our island and our region through their chosen career fields. As Triton Alumni, your
efforts will help Guam realize the value and necessity of growing the University of Guam to
serve our island communities.
Thank you for choosing the University of Guam. I wish each and every one of you a joyous day as you celebrate
your new beginning. Congratulations and God’s blessings to all of you.
William Leon Guerrero
Chairperson, Board of Regents
Message from the President
Congratulations to the Class of Spring 2015! Your hard work has brought you to this day, a
new beginning and an opening to new opportunities. All of you have faced the challenge of
struggling with multiple commitments and responsibilities, and have risen to the occasion.
I hope that you will always remember the satisfaction you feel today at having earned your
degree.
But your talents and perseverance have only brought you to a commencement ceremony,
a time to begin and not just a time to commemorate. That is the essential meaning of
commencement which is a formal way of announcing a beginning. You are now entitled to carry a diploma from
UOG and you have been equipped with knowledge and skills which say to the world that you are ready to take on
the challenges of the 21st century.
You don’t know where these challenges will take you, but you should know that you are ready. Today, we will listen
to individuals who are successful in ways they never imagined. We will hear from David Cruz III who is from our
island and who is now working his way through the entertainment industry in which he wears his Guam seal and
Guam brand with pride. We will also hear from Jim Obergefell whose landmark case for marriage equality in front
of the US Supreme Court will mean that his name will be in history books for the next few decades.
We are the only University that is committed to the island societies and cultures of the Micronesian Region. Today
we will honor another in the series of Master of Micronesian Creative and Traditional Knowledge. For his work in
the revival and recreation of Chamorro dance, Frank Rabon will receive this award today.

About Commencement
Academic Dress and Procession
The history of academic dress dates to the Middle
Ages when many scholars were also clerics and
wore costume of the monastic orders. In 1321, the
University of Cambridge adopted specific styles and
color combinations. American colleges and universities
desired to adopt a standard code for academic dress
for colleges and universities in the United States. The
standards continue to be followed by the American
Council of Education.
The costumes worn today are all traditional
and their colors, trimmings and patterns
interpret the degree, the field of learning,
and the institution that conferred the degree.
The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves
and is designed to be worn closed; the
master’s gown has an oblong sleeves open at
the wrist. The rear part of its oblong shape
is square cut and the front part has an arc
cut away. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped
sleeves, is faced with velvet and has three bars
across the sleeves. The color of the velvet is
distinctive of the degree.

education; apricot, nursing; dark blue, philosophy; and

The academic procession is led by the grand marshal, who
is the President of the Faculty Senate. A traditional order
to procession is followed: First come the candidates for
degrees according to the order in which the
degrees are to be conferred; next, members
of the faculty led by the faculty marshal,
the honorary degree recipient and the other
members of the platform party followed by
the president of the university. The order is
reversed for the recessional.
You will note that some of today’s graduates
are wearing a gold stole. This stole indicates
that the wearer is graduating with academic
honors.

Historically, the mace was a heavy, spiked
club used during the Middle Ages to break
armor in battle. Today, the mace is an

Commencement Address
Mr. David Cruz
Founder, Finding-Cupid.com and Cast Member, The Millionaire Matchmaker
For the last five years, David Cruz III has been making a name for
himself in the world of relationships, dating and love. From being a
featured advice columnist to a curator of Lux Valentines Day gifts,
David has made his claim to becoming a personality and brand that
people trust when it comes to all things romantic.
David has been a featured columnist for some of the biggest media
companies in the US and Australia like Frontiers Magazine LA,
DNA Magazine (Aus.), YourTango.com, PattiKnows.com and The
Huffington Post.
David Cruz III
Founder, Finding-Cupid.com and
Cast Member, The Millionaire Matchmaker
In the summer of 2010, and with a strong following of readers
building behind him, David created Finding-Cupid.com, a website
dedicated to all things love. Today, Finding Cupid features eight
new writers whose areas of expertise range from cooking, fashion,
crafting, beauty and more. The blog features all six degrees of lifestyle
content in the world of love and relationships.
Additionally, the new website also features two new pages that focus
on his two other passions: crafting and gift giving.
The Modern Crafter is a page that is dedicated to all things sentimental. Each month the page features easy
DIY projects that one can make for their significant other or themselves. From paper decorations to cards
“The Modern Crafter” has it all.
The Market Place was a place for David to share his favorite finds in the world of gifting. Inspired by the lack
of unique and quality gift ideas, David set out to find the very best of the best and now features them with
regular updates to the product assortment.
Fueled by the success of the website, Finding Cupid Radio launched in the summer of 2011 on the Universal
Broadcasting Network in Hollywood. The show featured David as the host of a live radio talk show that
showcased celebrity guests, writers, and singers.
In 2013, David became the newest cast member and Matchmaker on the hit Bravo TV Show, The Millionaire
Matchmaker. Under the tutelage of most famous matchmaker on television, Patti Stanger, David quickly was
promoted to Director of Matchmaking after only working for one year with The Millionaires Club.
This single handedly rounded out his expertise and brand presence in the world of love.

Commencement Address
Mr. James Obergefell
Named Plaintiff in U.S. Supreme Court Case Obergefell v. Hodges
James “Jim” Obergefell was born and raised in Sandusky, Ohio
and moved to Cincinnati to attend the University of Cincinnati,
earning a degree in Secondary Education and German. Jim taught
high school German before leaving Cincinnati for graduate school
in College Student Personnel at Bowling Green State University in
Bowling Green, Ohio. During a weekend visit to Cincinnati in the
winter of 1992, Jim met and fell in love with John Arthur.
For the next two decades, John and Jim lived a quiet, happy life
in Cincinnati; they worked together in IT consulting, traveled,
collected art, volunteered, and became involved in their community
— as illustrated by their longstanding membership with the Human
Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest civil rights organization
working for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.
Jim Obergefell
In the spring of 2011, John was diagnosed with ALS, also known
as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurological disease with
no cure and a prognosis of death within 2-5 years of diagnosis. Jim
became John’s full-time caregiver.
When the Windsor decision was announced in June, 2013, striking down part of the Defense of Marriage
Act (DOMA), John and Jim decided to get married. John was in at-home hospice care at the time, and in
order to marry, they had to charter a medical jet to fly to Maryland. After being married by John’s Aunt
Paulette on the Tarmac of Baltimore Washington International Airport and returning to Ohio, John and Jim
decided to file suit in U.S. Federal Court against the State of Ohio to demand recognition of their lawful,
out-of-state marriage on John’s death certificate at the time of death.
Their lawsuit was the first filed following the Windsor decision, and United States District Judge Timothy
Black’s ruling on July 22, 2013 was the first in favor of marriage equality post-Windsor. Judge Black issued
a temporary injunction requiring the State of Ohio to recognize their marriage on John’s death certificate.
John died in October, 2013, and his death certificate accurately reflects his marital status and Jim as John’s
surviving spouse. After John’s death, Jim left his career in corporate training and IT consulting to travel for
a time, later earning his real estate license and becoming a real estate agent.

Jim Obergefell (left) with his late husband John Arthur.
When the injunction was made permanent by Judge Black in December, 2013, the State of Ohio appealed
to the Sixth District Court of Appeals. In November, 2014, the Sixth District Court of Appeals ruled
against John and Jim, as well as the plaintiffs from five other cases in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, and
Tennessee, setting the stage for an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. In January, 2015, the U.S. Supreme
Court agreed to hear all six cases, consolidating the cases into one known as Obergefell v. Hodges.
Jim had his day at the Supreme Court during oral arguments for Obergefell v. Hodges on April 28, 2015.
The court heard arguments on two issues: the right to marry, and the right to recognition of lawful, outof-state marriages. A historic decision is expected in June, 2015.
Jim considers himself an accidental activist, someone who never planned to be actively involved with
any particular issue but instead became a passionate activist due to unforeseen circumstances. As the
named plaintiff in the U.S. Supreme Court case, and now marriage equality activist, Jim is honored
to be at the University of Guam and also has speaking engagements with many institutions including
Ohio University, the ACLU, Cleveland Stonewall Democrats, Columbus Pride, Cincinnati Enquirer
Storytellers, Isaac M. Wise Temple (Cincinnati), the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), and the National
Association of Gay and Lesbian Real Estate Professionals. Jim will also be a guest at the 50th Anniversary
LGBT Civil Rights Movement celebration in Philadelphia on July 4, 2015.

Francisco “B. Rabon
Master of Micronesian Creative and
Traditional Knowledge Honoris Causa
Born and raised on Guam, Francisco B. Rabon was brought up in the
traditions of his Chamorro ancestors.
Being a lover of the arts from a very young age, Rabon also took his
interest in culture and married the two, which led him to dedicating
the last 32 years of his life to recreating, perpetuating and teaching the
existence of Taotao Tano by forming the Guma Taotao Tano’ group.
Within this group, four statutes stand clear: each member believes they
take from the past and combine it with the present to build for the
future; they instill in future generations with the pride of the Chamorro
people and traditions; through performances, they educate and share
the unique indigenous traditions of the Chamorro people; and they
stand to respect the Chamorro culture and the struggles to preserve it.
As the director of Guma Taotao Tano’, he re-created and established
basic standard dance steps— such as apunta, paluma, and totbus—that
are now accepted and recognized as represententive of the Chamorro people’s 4,000 year old existence. He
also created dance movements— such as Bailan Lina’la, Bailan Galaide, and Bailan Tunas—that depict the
Chamorro’s indigenous lifestyles prior to colonization influencing their indigenous heritage.
Francisco “Frank” B. Rabon
He also re-established the (rites of passage – Chalan Lina’la/Chalan Fuetsa), so that members of Guma
Taotao Tano’ could truly understand the value of the path they chose as cultural practitioners of the
Chamorro language and culture.
Frank has composed many songs and chants depicting the indigenous heritage, legends, and lifestyles of the
Chamorro people. He has authored and published articles and literatures documenting the path that many
members of Guma Taotao Tano’ took in joining him in establishing what is now mainstream Chamorro
dance.
Numerous recognition has been given to the group for continued perpetuation and preservation of the
Chamorro traditions. As the director/choreographer, Frank has been honored as the Master of Chamorro
Dance title and given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Guam Council of the Arts and Humanities.
Frank continues his mssion to instill a sense of identity to the people of Guam, and the importance of
preserving and perpetuating the traditions of his Chamorro ancestors

The National Anthem
Lyrics by Francis Scott Key
Oh! Say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,
O’re the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.
Oh!, Say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’re the land and of the free and the home of the brave?
The Guam Hymn
Ramon Manalisay Sablan, M.D. (1934)
Translated to Chamorro by Lagrimas Untalan
Fanoghe Chamorro put it tano’-ta
Kanta I matuna-na gi todu I lugat.
Para I honra, para I gloriha
Abiba I isla, sin parat.
Para I honra, para I gloriha
Abiba I isla, sin parat.
U todu I tiempo I pas para hita
Yan ginen I langet na bendesion.
Kontra I piligru, na’fansafu ham
Yu’os protehi I isla Guåhån.
Kontra I piligru, na’fansafu ham
Yu’os protehi I isla Guåhån.
University Alma Mater
Music by R. Mannoni
On the shore of the Western Pacific
Stands our Alma Mater true.
We’ll long retain the memories
Of the days we spent with you.
In the warmth of the island magic,
We will return some day.
Join in and sing a song of praise.
Hail, oh hail.
Hail, oh hail.
Our University.
