MOUNT CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH
WHY PRAY?
God has called us into a relationship with Himself. Relationships require communication.
Prayer is communication between a holy God and a beloved you and me. Throughout God's
Word we're taught the significance and role of prayer.
God commands us to pray.
God reveals Himself to us through prayer.
God extends His power to us through prayer so that we may resist temptation.
God invites us to bring our burdens and needs to Him in prayer.
God responds to the prayers of His people.
God imparts wisdom and understanding through prayer.
God exercises His ability to do the impossible through the prayers of His people.
Here are two excellent examples of prayer:
In Christ, pray,
Rev. Milo Ken Anderson

OCTOBER NEWS
Dear Family and Friends,
It is with sad hearts that we are writing to let you know of the passing of our beautiful and loving Mom and
Grandma, Ellie Scoville, on Friday, September 11, 2015. Despite our sadness at her leaving us, we are joyful
knowing that she is now reunited with the love of her life, Deane. These past nine months since Deane’s passing were not easy for her, but she never, ever complained, was always upbeat, and was far more concerned
about those around her than about herself. How typical of the life she lived! Her last days were peaceful and
pain-free, which was a blessing. She was finally just tired and ready to go home.
We thank all of you for your expressions of concern and caring over these past months. It meant so much to
her and to all of us. We are planning a special celebration of Ellie’s life on Saturday, October 10 at 11:00
A.M. at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 5895 Ball Road, Cypress, CA 90630.
A luncheon at the church will follow the service and we would love to have you join us.
Much love,
Carol and Paul

MOUNT CALVARY MINISTRY FAIR SUNDAY OCTOBER 18, 2015
11:15 AM—12:00 PM
You are invited to come join us at our annual Ministry Fair on Sunday, October 18. We will
have several ministry partners who will be represented including LSS Community Care, Casa
Youth Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, Visiting Angels, Sheepfold, Summer Harvest, Precious
Life Shelter, ResCare Workforce Services, African Team Ministries Gift Display, Lutheran
Camps, Retreats and Conferences, and many more!!!
Please plan to attend and invite friends and neighbors in your community. This is an opportunity to share with others the ministry of
Mount Calvary and those organizations supported by the church.
There will be a lot of materials, information, and representatives to
talk to about their ministry. This is a great chance to find out how
you can get involved in your church and community, or to get information for friends and family. The congregational council will
be hosting coffee hour on this day.

Want More Lutheran In Your Life?
.We children of the 50s and 60s remember The Lutheran Hour on the TV every Sunday. A lot has
changed, but the Lutheran Hour is still on the radio. You will find it on KBRT AM 740 every Sunday morning at 8am. Join Pastor Gregory Seltz for
30 minutes of message, commentary and music. It’s a great way to get warmed-up for worship. Yes, you 21st century types can play it as a
pod-cast, download it to your computer and/or
stream it on your smart phone too.

Need Volunteers!
The Evergreen Motel Ministry needs
your help. Several of the other participating organizations have moved on to other
projects. They need to be replaced in order for the ministry to continue. The commitment is only two hours, one Saturday
per month. If you know of a church or
community volunteer group that might
want to participate, please contact Janice
Akins at [email protected], or
714-826-0807.
Women’s Ministry is collecting items for
Lutheran World Relief.
We are helping LWR with personal care kits. With so many
recent natural disasters their supplies have been taxed. We appreciate any donations you can offer.
The items required are lightweight towels 20” x 40” & 52” x
27”, bath bars, adult toothbrush, sturdy comb, and
metal nail clippers. We request these by 10/4.
They can be dropped off in the Narthex. Again,
please contact either Nancy Conze or Ann Lossner
if you have any questions.
Thank you kindly.
Janice

Mount Calvary and the Drought
The California drought and water shortage also affects Mount Calvary. In normal years our garden
sprinkler system is adequate, but this year is different. There wasn't enough rain last winter to saturate
the ground as usual. The trees and bushes are
stressed because water from the sprinklers does not
soak down to their roots. It rarely goes in the
ground more than 3 or 4 inches, just enough for the
lawn, smaller bushes and the ground cover. Fortuately, the Mexican Bird of Paradise, Carob trees and
cypress trees are able to handle the drought. So do
the olive trees, magnolias and Chinese elms if they
can just get an occasional soaking. Many agapanthus plants on the east and south sides have been removed because they require a lot of water to look
good and to bloom. The sprinklers in those areas
have been blocked off and the ground covered with
decorative wood chips. The same thing was done in
the planter next to Ball Road.
We plan to remove other plants which are not
drought tolerant and block off more sprinklers to
conserve water whenever it can be done without degrading the appearance of our beautiful property.
The sprinkler system is old, requires constant attention and regular repairs. Fortunately parts are readily available and repairs can be made without special
tools. Automatic watering is scheduled for Sunday,
Wednesday and Friday mornings. It should always
be completed by 9 am. Everyone can help keep it
functioning properly. Just look around anytime you
are on the property or driving by. If you see water
flowing across the sidewalk or out onto the pavement notify the office or a council person or Dick
Olson, Jim Hedrick or Dennis Olsen so the sprinkler
system can be shut off. They may just tell you
where the valve is and you can then shut it off yourself. With everyones help we can continue to conserve water and keep the church property beautiful.
BOY SCOUT TROUP 670 NEWS
Matthew DeTarr had his Eagle Project Fundraiser @ Fantastic Burgers on Tuesday August
19th. Everyone who participated were able to get
great food and help with the cost of the project. I
also got home baked cookies for desert ! Matthew’s Eagle Project will be to work on patio’s
bricks that have sunk in, and work on pavement
tripping hazards around the church property.
We are excited to see his project progress.
The Eagle Project will begin on Friday Oct. 2nd &
Saturday October 3rd.. If you are planning on
coming to the church, please be aware that the Boy
Scouts will be working on our patio, behind the
Boy Scout shed, and in other locations to help
make our property more congregation friendly.
Make sure you give them a big “Thank You” for
all their hard work. !
