One of the world's great sporting events, the Ryder Cup is the
stage for the purest drama and theater in golf, where legends
are forged and legacies are created. The Ryder Cup is golf's
greatest team event, bringing together professionals from the
United States and Europe every two years for a passionate
competition that transcends sports and captures the interest
and imagination of a spellbound audience across the globe.
Spanning 38 competitions over more than 80 years, the Ryder
Cup is named for British seed merchant Samuel Ryder, whose
vision was to create a match between American and British
golf professionals. The first Ryder Cup was held at Worcester
(Mass.) Country Club in 1927, with the United States team
prevailing in the match-play format, 9-1/2 points to 2-1/2 points.
Europe currently holds the Ryder Cup trophy, thanks to
a pulsating victory in the fall of 2010 in Wales.
