eight students ages 9 to 11 from
ET Hamilton, Kresson and Signal
Hill elementary schools, will compete in the First Lego League
Championship Tournament in

Classes and curriculum are
ever-evolving at Eastern Regional
High School, and to highlight
these changes, Superintendent
Harold Melleby Jr. said this year
he hopes to have department supervisors regularly address the
district’s board of education.
At the board’s most recent
meeting, 10th-grade vice principal Steve Young led that charge as
he outlined some of the recent
changes to the social studies, gifted and talented, and music and
art departments he oversees.
Young said there were three
main areas he wanted to highlight, the first being how the dis-
trict’s GT program was helping
with its overall goal of getting
more students enrolled in Advanced
Placement
courses.
Through the GT program, Young
said an initiative now exists
where gifted and talented students will go to classrooms to
speak with other students and
communicate the realities AP
classes, such as the level of homework and workload students can
expect if they were to enroll.
Young said he believes the initiative has already had a significant effect just in the areas he supervises, as in the past several
years, AP classes for U.S. history

THE VOORHEES SUN — FEB. 10–17, 2016
in our opinion
Iowa brings some surprises
Trump has challengers; Democrats are in for a fight; Christie is done
onths of campaigning, of
muck slinging, of pointing
fingers, and of, sometimes,
yelling are finally producing some results. Last week, the Iowa caucuses –
the first stop in the race for each major
political party’s nomination for president – produced some interesting results.
Republican candidate Ted Cruz took
home the primary’s first victory for his
party, besting the outspoken Donald
Trump by a margin of 28 percent to 24
percent. It was a successful night for
Cruz, and not a very good one for
Trump.
But it was also a good night for
Marco Rubio, who surged to third
place with 23 percent. It puts him in a

great position to make a move in the
coming weeks.
The battle in the Democratic party
was a little muddier. Even though
Hillary Clinton claimed victory the
night of the caucuses, before all the
polling districts were in, she was neck
and neck with Bernie Sanders, each
within decimal points of each other.
Rounded up, each candidate received
50 percent of the vote.
Our homegrown talent, Gov.
Christie, while not completely done,
looks dead in the water. He ranked 10th
among Republicans last week, with
only 2 percent of the Iowa vote.
The fight moved on to New Hampshire this week, and it will continue
down to South Carolina on Feb. 20,
then over to Nevada on Feb. 23. Eight
more states’ primaries will occur in
March.
By this time next month, we could
have clear-cut winners, or we could
have a very unclear situation on our
hands. Either way, with the Iowa caucuses in the books, and with the results
being so close for both parties, we’re
likely to see quite a bit of campaigning
ahead.
Voorhees police implementing two new programs
The Voorhees Township Police Department continues its efforts to keep our community safe and has implemented two new
programs.
The police website www.vtpd.com will
now allow visitors to electronically submit
vacation property check requests, police
reports and vehicle accident reports. In addition, residents can sign up for and view
live streams of our social media platforms,
find crime prevention tips and much more.
The site is mobile and tablet friendly as
well.
The police department, in partnership
with the Community Affairs Bureau, has
initiated the Voorhees police “SAFECAM”
camera registration program. It is a voluntary program that allows residents, businesses and organizations to notify the police if they have a security camera system.
This notification
does not give police
access to the camera system, but allows the police to
maintain the camera in their database for potential
permitted review
should a crime
occur in the area.
Participating properties will receive a
decal with the official Voorhees police “SAFECAM”
logo that can be
displayed as an additional

Virtua Voorhees
receives AMSN
PRISM Award
The 4A Acute Pulmonary Care
Unit at Virtua Hospital in
Voorhees received the prestigious
AMSN PRISM Award, a relatively
new honor recognizing excellence
in nursing practice, leadership
and outcomes in hospital medicalsurgical units across the country.
The award, which stands for
“Premier Recognition In the Specialty of Med-Surg,” is the first of
its kind honoring med-surg nursing units in the United States.
It is co-sponsored by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses
and the Medical-Surgical Nursing
Certification Board.
The award is given to outstanding acute care/med-surg units or
adult/pediatric units classified as
med-surg.
Officials representing AMSN
and MSNCB presented the 4A
Acute Pulmonary Care Unit with
the AMSN PRISM award plaque
during a ceremony on Jan. 27 at
Virtua Hospital in Voorhees.
The achievement of this award
by the 4A Acute Pulmonary Care
Unit will also be announced at the
AMSN Annual Convention; on
the AMSN and MSNCB websites
and social media sites; and in
AMSN and MSNCB publications.
“We pride our profession, our
unit, our staff, our patients and
their families; it clearly shows,”
said John Matsinger, DO, MBA,
executive vice president and chief
clinical officer at Virtua. “Proudly, 4A Acute Pulmonary Care Unit
has become a benchmark of exemplary practice.”
Hoping to inspire nurses to
strive for the highest levels of patient safety and quality, AMSN
and MSNCB launched the award
in October 2012. The award also
reflects the compassion, commitment and connection that characterize med-surg nurses.
Specifically, the award celebrates units that exhibit: effective
leadership; recruitment and retention of competent staff members; evidence-based practice;
positive patient outcomes; a
healthy work environment; and
lifelong learning of unit staff
members.

three, AP psychology has increased to five sections on average each year, and AP oral history
has become a class offered every
year rather than every other year.
“Again, I would highlight the
role that the GT program has
played in that because this was all
about students talking to students, and who else to better
speak with each other than students?” Young said.
The second area Young highlighted was the several-year-long
process of updating and modernizing the music and art department’s general music offering formally known as Bach to Rock. According to Young, students now
have the option of a general
music class known as music production and technology, through
which students can use iPads and
the audio program GarageBand
to create and produce music.
Young said the class was also
able to bring in what are effectively desktop computers to serve as
mini sound studios for students
to use along with the iPads to create a lab-like effort.
“Students are going to have the
opportunity to write, play, record,
mix and produce music of their
own, and they’re going to be able
to collaborate with each other,”
Young said. “We’re excited that
it’s going to give them hands-on
experience.”
Finally, Young said he simply
wanted to highlight the influx of
several new teachers to the areas
he supervises. Although the
board had already conducted a
meet and greet with new teachers
at the beginning of the school
year, Young said the early returns
of what the teachers have added
to the classroom were already
positive.
“They’re connecting with students in ways that we really could
have only hoped they would have,
and they’re doing those things already,” Young said.

Team researched composting
for FLL’s ‘Trash Trek’ challenge theme
TEAM
Continued from page 1
tiana Ter-Saakov, the Lego Masters team started about three
years ago as there was no other
team in the area.
“It is really a home-grown endeavor,” Erlich said. “You do not
need to have any special engineering skills to run a team. You
learn along with the kids. Their
energy and enthusiasm motivates
all of our efforts.”
Teams can have two to 10 members ages 9 to 14, and compete at
FLL events while judged in categories such as core values, project
research and robot design.
During the core values section
of competition, judges graded
students this year by having them
work on the short activity of arranging cards in alphabetical
order and then answer questions
about respect, communication
and professionalism.
For the research section, students had to explain the research
they did on trash by acting out a
short skit. During the robot design section, students had to use a
robot designed for the specific
purpose of solving pre-assigned
FLL missions on a tabletop playing field. Students were then
questioned on the design and programming of their creation.
“The team and events really
prepare them for the real world,
and being in front of judges prepares them for interviews as an
adult,” Erlich said.
This year’s FLL challenge was
“Trash Trek” in which the FLL
asked students to “explore the
world of trash, from collection, to
sorting, to smart production and
reuse.”
For their project, the Lego Masters chose to research composting
and ultimately developed a plan
detailing how schools can compost leftover scraps of food.
On Dec. 12, the Lego Masters
competed at a qualifier event in
Wilmington, Del., won the “First
Special to The Sun

schools. They will compete in the First Lego League Championship
Tournament in Dover, Del., on Feb. 20.
Place Mechanical Design Award,”
and were one of nine out of 26
teams judges chose to compete at
the upcoming championship
tournament.
To advance to the championship, the Lego Masters had to
have their robot score in the top
40 percent of the robot game and
the team had to score well in all
three judging categories.
However, regardless of scores,
Erlich said the ultimate goal of
FLL is to have kids become gracious professionals by learning
together and then helping spread
their knowledge to others.
“I think it’s great because it
touches on so many aspects of
learning and personality development,” Erlich said. “They gain a
lot of confidence since they do all
this work themselves.”
Members of the Lego Masters
are Ashot Ter-Saakov, Esther
Adebi, Juliet Heller, Richa Prabhu, Daniel Biryukov, Diana Suralik, Mahek Jhaveri and Rachel
Boroda.
The team also has four mentors from Eastern High School –
Natasha and Dimitri Ter-Saakov,
Zach Boroda and Brian Gillespe.
