Month after 5:30 p.m. Donna Levine is leading our critique. All members & guests are invited to participate with work and suggestions for the work. Please join us! Critique begins promptly at 5:45 pm and runs to 6:45 pm prior to the General meeting. Paintings and drawings do not need to be framed. Unfinished pieces are welcome for suggestions to finish them. Those members arriving with work after 6:15 risk not having their work critiqued depending on volume of work brought in earlier. 1 painting only per person please. We would prefer that participants in the critique please not bring paintings that are freshly wet, oils particularly, as the paint gets on our hands and clothes from handling the pieces and then paint is transferred to other works and the carpet in the critique area. If you have a frame to put the painting in for handling purposes that will be appreciated. Thanks from the critique leaders. ~ Jim Garrison, Critique Master 1 OFFICERS President Terry Hamra •765-210-8621 • [email protected] 1st Vice President for Programs Freddie Lieberman •480-998-8782 • [email protected] 2nd Vice President for Shows Mary Kuhr • 602-430-5898 • [email protected] Recording Secretary Pamela Shearer •480-628-2072 • [email protected] Corresponding Secretary Barbara Bagan •480-948-8507 •[email protected] Treasurer Ericka Cero Wood •480-874-2272 • [email protected] BOARD OF DIRECTORS Membership Chair Mona Houle •602-721-9676 •[email protected] Newsletter ‘Art Beat’ Karen Lockhart • 602-803-0931 • [email protected] Advertisement Kathleen Maley • 480-456-3768 • [email protected] Circulation Irene Donato • 480-451-0207 • [email protected] AZ Art Alliance Rita Goldner • 480-948-6547 • [email protected] Photo Book - Irene Donato • 480-451-0207 • [email protected] Scholarship - Linda Phillips • 480-998-8430 •[email protected] Mail Pickup – Judy Delmonico-Roll • 480-990-1359 • [email protected] Artwork of the Month - Irene Donato • 480-451-0207 • [email protected] Will Coe • 480-697-0661 • [email protected] Critique Master - Jim Garrison • 480-969-4405 • [email protected] Assistants to Critique • Dave Flitner, Donna Levine Paint-out Coordinator - Rita Goldner • 480-948-6547 • [email protected] Photographers –Karen Lockhart Bud Heiss Webmaster – Ryan Wood •480-874-2272 • [email protected] PRESIDENT’S CORNER Greetings Members & Guests, At times it is hard for me to think of the business side of an Art League – it sometimes takes on the attributes of an extended family. Lee Kaster was the March presenter. She is just one small part of our very talented group. Her voice may seem small in a room full of artist but her creativity comes to life in a very large way. I thank her for sharing her talents with us. Sometimes, it is easier to do a demonstration in a room full of strangers than it is to open up and share with your very talented contemporaries. We also had a bit of sentiment as Harold Nelson is moving away. His presence will be missed by many. We will look forward to a visit from him when he passes through Scottsdale. Please keep Irene Donato, our very special member, in your thoughts and prayers. Her husband passed away first week in March. I want to thank all the members that bring refreshments to our meetings. What would a family be without food? Please bring a little something for the April meeting. The Month of May is covered. In the next month we will be discussing who will be replacing Mary Kuhr as 2nd VP of shows in June. And there are also a few volunteers for other positions that are open. I will let you know what is needed to keep our opportunities moving forward. It is your volunteerism that assures the growth of our fantastic League. Of the Month 1st Place “Under the Palms” by Nancy Baldrica 2nd Place “Prancing Ponies” by Freddie Lieberman Thank you ~ Terry Armstrong Hamra, President Rules for entering Artist of the Month You cannot enter a piece that has been in the critique that same evening. Jim Garrison gave all those who brought an artwork a concise and much needed advise….along with his praise and witty quips. We all came away smiling and smarter! Truly – it is great to see friends each month……..and sad to say good-bye to Harold Nelson. Ha! Finally caught John sleeping on the job and………it is possible to sleep standing up! “Natch! Off by 1 number.” Then we catch Terry and Kat texting ……what??..... Thank you Lee Kaster for a demonstration on how to let your inner self express. 4 We had 68 members and 4 guests for our March General meeting. We have 190 members now. To access your Arizona Art Alliance newsletter go to http://www.azartalliance.com/newsletters.html 6 ”Arizona Desert Botanical Gardens” I can remember being fascinated by my grandfather drawing stick people for me on the ground while I stood between his knees at the neighborhood bocce court. I remember my first art teacher Mrs. Forman (had one arm) in grammar- school and my first college instructor, Mr. Ransom. The journey and experience has been with me throughout my life. I have worked with artist friends and taught by many, some of which may have touched your lives at Scottsdale Artist League and exposed you to ideas, techniques, and new friends you didn’t have before. In my travels, I have been in many countries while in or out of the USAF, and most of our United States and, I have enjoyed the diversity of Art created in many cultures. This life experience has been fascinating and a joy, for Art is like a Magnet that I am drawn to. “End of Day” I feel we must speak our own language in expressing ourselves, as I try so hard to do when I commit poetry, emotion, music and song I hear in my mind, to canvas. Creating fine art, I feel one must first start with realism. “Dusk” In conclusion: if you think you can’t paint but enjoy fine art, express yourself in your selection of it, as artist do in the pleasure of providing original fine art for you. Till we paint again Raul V.
