Goodbye Mr Hays
After thirty one years at Sheering
School, Headteacher Philip Hays said
goodbye at the end of term. Philip
joined Sheering School as deputy
head in 1978 and was
a p p o i nt e d
to
the
headship three years
later.
The village school is
known for its family
at mo sp he re ,
caring
ethos and involvement
with the church and the
community. Mr Hays
believes this is at the
heart of the school’s
successes,
the
most
recent of which are the
outstanding judgements
for ‘the Curriculum’ and ‘Care of the
Children’.
Mr Hays told Sheering News:
“Sheering School will always have a
very special place in my heart.
During my 31 years at Sheering I
have had the privilege of watching
so many children develop their full
potential in all aspects of their lives.
About 700 children have been
through the school in my time, each
bringing their own unique
personality and talent to the school
and many of them have kept in
touch. One of my greatest pleasures
has been to teach the children of
parents whom I taught a generation
earlier. I wish the school and its new
headteacher, Mrs Julie Lorkins, every

continued success in the future.”
Former pupils will fondly remember
productions of their favourite
pantomimes when Mr Hays always
made a point of including every
child in a singing, dancing or acting
role from a tree or
villager aged 4 or 5 to a
leading role by age 10
or 11. Another fond
memory from their time
at school will be the
regular school journeys
to Norfolk.
Old photos were on
display at a drop-in tea
party for ex-pupils and
their families. It was a
most enjoyable occasion
with much cause for
nostalgia
and
reminiscences.
Philip’s retirement was also marked
by an evening party for past and
present staff, PTFA and governors,
and colleagues from the Harlow
Education Consortium.
At a special school assembly he was
presented with a pastel drawing of
the school by local artist Paulene
Brakspear, DVDs of most recent
pantomimes and a cheque for over
£500
A new library building, designed by
architect Andrew Paine, a former
pupil, is planned for the near future
and will be named the Hays Library
to celebrate the service Mr Hays has
given to the school and the village.

District Councillor’s report
Lower Sheering has been
elected to be part of a pilot
scheme. In short, 3 monthly
visits from an Essex County
Council representative to
look at our roads, street,
kerbs, etc… and then to
work out why things are not
being fixed within a reasonable time frame.
Should be interesting? I, along with some
determined residents have requested a
solution to Back Lane, flooding on Sheering
Mill Lane and, can we have Sheering Lower
Road resurfaced before too long.
I’m
pleased to be part of the scheme and
sincerely hope that we might see some
action as a result.
My involvement as a Cabinet member has
allowed me to look outside my ward and I
have to say that I truly appreciate how lucky I
am. New play equipment has been provided
for the children from Limes Farm Estate,
Chigwell. The estate is famous for all the
wrong reasons, and the officers at EFDC have
worked unbelievably hard to involve the
youngsters providing them with recreational
equipment that suits their needs.
The elections came and went. Cllr Anthony
Jackson has been re – elected as your County
Councillor. In a thank you note to me he
asked for requests. Well, I have asked for
reduced speeding around Campions and will
continue to highlight the issues there. I have
asked for re-surfacing before the craters
appear on Lower Sheering Road.
The Parish Council continue to provide an
excellent service with Cllr John Harrington
and his team and Donna Harris as Parish
Clerk. I’d like this opportunity to say Thank
You.
Kind regards
Heather Harding

Bill Rammell MP – taking action on your behalf
as Member of Parliament
for Harlow, Nazeing, Roydon and Sheering
Gypsy and Traveller consultation –
I believe that Epping Forest has
historically shouldered a large
burden when it comes to gypsy
and traveller pitches. When the
Conservative-run East of England
Regional Assembly last year
announced that Epping Forest’s
pitches would increase by more
than half, I was determined to reverse this
policy. This year I met with the Minister
responsible, and we have seen some success
recently. In March the Government announced
that it would reduce planned gypsy and
traveller numbers from 49 to 34 (an intervening
consultation round late last year had decreased
the number of additional pitches from 49 to
39). But we urgently need further reductions
and I will make further representations on
residents’ behalf to make clear that Epping
Forest deserves a fairer deal on this issue.

vital that we invest in more homes and jobs
now to ensure that people do not suffer during
the downturn, and not cut public spending as
the Conservatives have promised to do.
Working with this Government, I will continue
to work to get Britain through this downturn as
fairly and quickly as possible.
Armed Forces Day is an event which has always
been close to my heart but particularly so this
year as I have recently taken on the big
responsibility as Minister for the Armed Forces.
I was honoured to escort Harlow resident Mr
Richard Edser to an Armed Forces Reception at
Downing Street to meet Prime Minister Gordon
Brown. Richard served in the Navy from 194347 and served on carrier Formidable in the
Pacific. He has been a Harlow resident since
1954 and is a member of the British Legion. We
owe a massive debt of thanks to Richard and
his colleagues, both past and current, for the
work they do on our behalf.

Robert Halfon - Conservative Prospective
Parliamentary Candidate
Sheering Youth Café - I visited
the club and was really
impressed. Congratulations go
to Paul Forsey, the man behind
the club and, indeed, all the
local youngsters who make use
of the facilities. When I visited
the club primary school age
yo u ng ste rs we re p la yin g
football, games, and having a brilliant time.
Election - We really need a general election
now. The expenses scandal has done so much
to add to the ever-increasing contempt felt by
people towards politicians. It will take a long
time to repair the damage and rebuild trust
between politicians and the public. Despite
this, there are many honest and decent
politicians
working
hard
for
the ir
constituencies. As prospective candidate I don't
get any wages, allowances or expenses from
the taxpayer.
Stansted - Any prospect of a second runway has
been delayed again, underlining what I have
always said, that it is unviable and should not
go ahead. I am particularly concerned about the
impact it would have on villages, including
Sheering, our countryside and quality of life.
Your local domestic oven cleaning company
Housing - A Conservative plan to give power
back to local communities would end the
controversial plan for thousands of homes in
the area. David Cameron says the Government's
housing targets will be scrapped, along with
unelected and costly regional assemblies.
Traffic All motorists are well aware of
problems at the M11-A414 roundabout but
thanks to my campaigning something is to be
done. It must be hoped the £9.9m being spent
on dualling the road from the A414-M11
roundabout to the Southern Way junction will
solve the queues we face when driving into
Harlow.
NHS Dentists - According to Government
figures 53 per cent of the population across the
West Essex Primary Care Trust area (which
includes Sheering) have not been seen by an
NHS dentist in the last two years. The number
of people seen by an NHS dentist in the area
has dropped from 141,558 in March 2006 to
129,498 last December. After all the taxes we
pay for the NHS, this is a disgrace. There needs
to be reforms to ensure more patients can see
an NHS dentist, rather than force people to go
private or miss out on treatment completely.

Happy Circle For Local Residents
retired due to age or ill health.
Sheering Happy Circle members and friends
enjoyed a brilliant tour around
Hylands House in Chelmsford. The
guide was excellent, making sure
there was seating in every room for
those needing a rest.
As I write this I'm looking forward to a
Strawberry Tea tomorrow (1st July) in Valerie
and Ron Monk’s garden. Yum!.
We have a trip to Southend, which will have
been enjoyed by the time you read this. Then
a Canal trip on Aug 13th.
We're really pleased to have two new
members, who can see the positives of joining
our club. So if anyone else is interested, just
come along and try.
Our next meeting will be Sept 30th, with a
line dancing display, when you can just watch
OR have a go!

We have recently been awarded
Hallmark One. Hallmark is a
nationally recognised quality
standards scheme devised
specially for village halls showing
that the hall committee is meeting nationally
set standards of good management and
charity administration.
We have held the usual bingo sessions but of
course there is always room for more people.
It is a very friendly, informal, social evening –
you even get a free cup of tea and a piece of
cake. The Flower & Produce Show takes place
on Saturday 5 September. We hope this year
will be as successful as last with lots of
exhibits. The wooden external doors have
been weatherproofed again, its surprising
how often these jobs have to be done. The
retaining posts, which some hirers find a
problem when leaving by the Fire Exit Only
doors, have been replaced with larger more
obvious ones. As a Committee we would like
to point out that the fire doors should really
only be used in an emergency!
All of the electrical work which needed doing
following the smoke damage in December has
now been completed and we are in possession
of an ‘Electrical Certificate’.

Apparently there will be a New Years Eve Party
in the Village Hall although it is not being
organised by the Village Hall Management
Committee. I have been told that ‘anyone’ can
go. There will probably be notices up nearer
the time so if you are interested keep a ‘look
out’ for them.
The AGM will be held on Wednesday 25
November. It would be good to see more
people from the village attending and even
possibly volunteering to join the Committee.
Beryl Gurteen Chair
Cricket Club
As we approach the half-way
stage of the season, the
Cricket Club can already look
back on a number of
exceptional performances.
For the first time in the
Club’s history three different
players have scored centuries
with one player, Ben Oakes, incredibly having
scored two; 131 against Netteswell & Burnt
Mill and 111 against Mountnessing.
The
others were scored by Paul Reed, 115 not out
against Writtle, and Michael Burrell, 128
against Roydon.
Not surprisingly, given this high scoring, the
Club has lost only one of the eight games it
has so far played with three victories and four
draws in a winning position. Disappointingly,
though, only one of these games has been
played at home on the Recreation Ground
because on three occasions the visiting teams
have been unable to raise a team. This has
made it necessary to take away games in
order to avoid going without a game. This
has been a shame because a lot of work has
been put in on the cricket square and it is
looking very good. With the Club’s limited
facilities, a good wicket is vital in maintaining
a good fixture list and, with this in mind it is
appreciated if it is respected by people using
the field for other activities.
Scores to date; Netteswell & Burnt Mill 218-9
Sheering 220-3 (won by 7 wickets), Sheering
158 Takeley 159-6 (lost by 4 wickets),
Matching Green 212-7 Sheering 109-1 (rain
abandoned), Sheering 191-6 Writtle 137-9
(drew), Sheering 204 Clavering 179-9 (drew),
Sheering 318 Mountnessing 73 (won by 245
runs – Club record), Matching Green 79
Sheering 85-1 (won by 9 wickets), Sheering
269-4 Roydon 180-8 (drew).
Finally, the Club is always ready to welcome
any new members who would be interested in
a game of social cricket against local villages.

As the term is coming to its end it will be
time to say goodbye to some of our children
as we welcome the new. It will also be time
to say goodbye to Mr Hays from the school.
He has always encouraged close links with
the Pre-School and for this we thank him
wholeheartedly. On behalf of the Pre-School
we would like to wish him all the very best
for a well deserved retirement.

Sheering won the 1st division league again
this year, just pipping Chigwell by one
point, so we regained the shield
and individual trophies. The new
season has now started. One
match has been played so far
against Chigwell which we lost, so not a
good start, but early days.
The league’s Triples competition was
completed at Bantham & Ongar on Sunday 5
April, with our team of Maureen Wright, Bob
Wright & Les Corsham just losing in the final,
but well done to them for becoming runners
up.
We were invited to enter two teams in the
Woodford Wells Open Triples Competition
held at their club on 2 April. Our team of
Norman Brown, Maureen Wright & Les
Corsham won the day and were presented
with brandy glass trophies.
Our club Fours competition was played on
Monday 20 April, and was won by Avril
Jackson, Ivy Noble, John Newton & Red
McGeagh. Congratulations to them. The
Triples Competition was played on Thursday
14 May, the final has still to be played.
We look forward to our annual BBQ to be
held on Sat 18 July, at Valerie/Ron Monk’s
garden, so hope for a warm dry day.
Our next trip to Harlow Dogs is booked for 5
August, so something else to look forward
to.

Since the last issue of Sheering
News in April, members have
enjoyed meetings at the Village
Hall on the second Tuesday in the
month at 7.45. Our programme
has included speaker Lauren Harriss
(grandaughter of Chris & Irene Harriss) who
spoke to us about her student life at
Broxbourne College where she is studying
her Public Services Course including Law,
Criminology, Leadership and Discipline.
Originally, Lauren was drawn to the Police
Service but feels that this Course will offer
more scope in the years to come and since

The Federation of Essex, to whom we are
affiliated, organised a County Quiz, the first
round for this area being at Harlow where
the eight members of our Institute were the
winners and moved on to Boreham for the
final, where we were placed seventh in the
County - not a bad start for an Institute of
our number. On 7 August we shall be visiting
the Federation's "The Orient" Exhibition of
Craft and Flowers at Towerlands in Braintree.
Should anyone be interested please contact
Irene Harriss. And in September, Tuesday, 8,
at the Village Hall our speaker will be from
the Henry Moore Museum - do come along as
this should be an interesting evening.
Later in the year we hope, as Essex
Federation have asked us, to raise money for
the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF), and a "Big
Curry" has been suggested by them. This is
to support Soldiers, Veterans and their

support as and when we have a date settled.
There is no meeting in August but in
September all are welcome.

Police Report - from your
Neighbourhood Specialist Officer
As your Neighbourhood Specialist Officer I have
responsibility for community engagement and
problem-solving local issues in your area. If you
have an on-going problem that is affecting your
(or your family's) quality of life then please let
me know. I work closely with the local authority
and other agencies to address the issues which
local people tell me are a priority.
I cover a wide area including Chipping Ongar
and villages from Norton Heath and Willingale to
Hastingwood and Sheering so I have the
assistance of Police Community Support Officers.
The PCSO with responsibility for your area is
Aimee Dilloway who works alongside me at
Ongar Police Station
I'm glad to say that Sheering is a comparatively
low crime area but I appreciate that this doesn't
really mean much to you if you've been the
victim of a crime yourself. I am therefore
determined to work with the local community to
tackle crime and disorder in your area. Recently,
officers from across the district have targeted
known routes into our area trying to disrupt
criminals who we know travel in from London to
commit crime here. Several police operations are
running to tackle burglars who target rural
locations and villages. This includes night shift
police units whose dedicated role is to disrupt
and catch these transient villains.
In the Sheering, Hastingwood and Matching part
of my beat, crime is down 13.8% (compared with
the same 3 month period last year - see the
Crime Mapping system on our website) but there
is so much more for us to do. At the time of this
report, over the last 3 month period in that area
there were an average of 3.3 burglaries per
month, and 3 incidents of vehicle crime so
please be vigilant and report any suspicious
behaviour.
We have to be clever about tackling crime to
make best use of our resources so I need the
help of the local community. I know the area
reasonably well having worked for over 10 years
in this district but, since being in my current
post, I'm trying to engage with various groups
who may not have had much police contact
before. So please contact me if you require a
local officer's attendance at your community
group or meeting.

Sheering C of E Primary School
At Sheering School we aim to
provide a range of extracurricular
activities
to
encourage our pupils’ social
and cultural development.
Pupils are given opportunities
to enjoy music and take part
each term in school productions
that develop their enthusiasm for performance
and raise their confidence and self-esteem.
The School Journey to Norfolk, which took
place in June this year, also makes an
important contribution to all aspects of our
pupils’ social and personal development. It
helps to develop skills related to organisation,
teamwork and problem solving and it allows
our pupils to take part in challenging activities
that cannot be provided in school.
This year 20 Year 5/ 6 pupils stayed at the
Horstead Centre, near Norwich, where they
took part in various outdoor activities,
including archery, canoeing and rock climbing.
On the last afternoon of the school journey all
the pupils took part in a raft making activity
across the River Bure. Everyone got thoroughly
wet, including members of staff, but a good
time was had by all!
Following the visit, the pupils wrote accounts
of their school journey, remembering
especially their achievements during the week.
“Norfolk was great. I really enjoyed myself. I
was proud of myself, when I did the Zip Wire,
because I was really nervous when I got to the
top. Joel (a Horstead staff member) talked to
me about it and he told me to try it, and I did
it. It was fun. I really wanted another go, but
we could only have one go. Norfolk was the
best school trip ever.” (Jessica Coghill.)
“Norfolk was one of the best experiences of my
life. I really enjoyed all the activities. The
canoeing was my favourite. I really hope I can
go there again. My biggest achievement was
diving in the river and swimming back. (Sky
Borland.)
“Norfolk was fantastic. I achieved lots of things
there. The canoeing was the thing I achieved
the most. I had never done it before.
I loved the raft making. I got really wet on that
activity. I was proud of myself on all of the
activities. I hope to do it again.” (Hannah
Alexander).
“My class and I went to Horstead in Norfolk. We
did lots of activities outside. I was really scared
on the Zip Wire, but eventually I went. The
activities were really good, and I overcame my

fear of heights. I learnt a lot. I really missed my
parents, but I didn’t worry that much. It was a
really enjoyable trip and I loved every bit. (Amy
Gaines).
“Norfolk was great. I managed to achieve in
which focused on songs relating to transport
and journeys.
At the end of this term we said farewell to
eleven Year 6 pupils, who are transferring to
Secondary School in September: 6 pupils to The
Leventhorpe School, 3 pupils to Mark Hall
School, 1 pupil to Birchwood School in Bishop’s
Stortford and 1 pupil to Saffron Walden County
High. We wish all our leavers every success in
their new schools.
The Leavers’ Service also provided parents and
staff with an opportunity to recognise the
achievements of several Year 5 and Year 6
pupils who have been Play Leaders during the
year, helping our younger pupils to ensure that
lunchtimes are a safer and more stimulating
place for everyone, and to thank members of
the School Council, who have worked very hard
throughout the year, arranging fund-raising
events for the Little Haven Children’s Hospice,
the school’s chosen charity for 2008-2009.
archery to hit the red target once and the
yellow target twice. I made my sandwiches by
myself. I had never jumped into a river, and I
conquered my fear and jumped in. (Luke
Taylor.)
“I discovered that I can get really angry, when I
am woken up at six o-clock in the morning by
Billy in my dormitory, asking what the time is. I
found out that it is fun to make people fall off a
raft. I achieved behaving well for a week.
(Cameron Forsey)
“At Norfolk I learnt how to tip over a raft and
make everyone wet! I conquered my fear of
heights and climbed the rock tower. I
discovered Hannah likes to laugh at everything.
(Vicky Markham)
“The time I had at Norfolk was amazing. I
learnt all about my friends and had new
experiences. The things that I achieved were in
archery I managed to hit the red target. Also I
was really scared about the canoeing, because
I had never done it before and the water wasn’t
very clean, but I managed to do it in the end,
with a bit of concentration and remembering
which way to move the paddle. I discovered
that as a team we all worked really well
together. I achieved going across the Zip Wire,
because I’m not very keen on heights. I climbed
over 700 steps in one day. (Emma Leadbeatter)
Our school was very pleased to contribute to
the Flower Festival at St Mary’s Church at the
end of June, with a display of children’s work
on flowers, complementing a display of flowers
around the maypole. Other events this term
have included class trips to the Sealife Centre
at Southend. Some of our pupils also took part
in a Music Festival at The Playhouse Theatre,
On Thursday October 1st the School is holding

Sheering Youth Café
Becomes a Hit
with local Youth
cakes. We as a youth group thank her very much
for all the kind effort she has put in over the last
couple of months and it is fantastic what she
does.
Since starting up in February, there are regularly
10-15 young people on the 1st and 4th Tuesday
of every month. We had very little equipment at
the beginning, but now we have acquired a 2nd
X-Box, a snooker/pool table, a fuzz ball table
and air hockey.
I would also like to thank St Mary’s church who
look after the funding and insurance of the
Youth Group. Even though we don’t run
Christian activities at the group, it is Christian
values that drive it forward to help provide a
service in our village.
With the recent good weather we have arranged
a variety of outdoor activities including flying
stunt kites and rockets, playing football and
various ball games.
We have also acquired the talents of a FA
qualified football coach Rob Earthy, who comes
every other Wednesday each month to teach
football skills. This has been great fun and for
me very tiring. Even though I swam the channel
last year, keeping up with these guys for an hour
takes some doing. We would like to thank Rob
for giving up time in his busy schedule to help.
The evening of the 30th June has to be the one
of the wildest session of all. We successfully
combined a quiz with a “pie fight”. Due to the
fantastic weather it ended up as a water fight on
the field.
The winners received a £5 gift
vouchers for HMV and the losers ended up
getting a spray cream pie thrown at them.
However no one escaped a pie and even my
black car ended up smeared in cream. I can tell
you that there’s nothing like the smell of stale
milk on a hot day when you get into your car.
Sam playing pool with Ben and Carly in the
background playing air hockey
The young people appear to have a really good
time and would like to have their own building
and available more often, and we are seeking
ideas and opportunities to try to make this
happen.
My poor car will never be the same
again
The last Youth Group before the summer
holidays will be on the 28th July then will close
over August and restart on the 22nd September.
This is down to the volunteers being on holiday.
Wanted
Ashley waiting for someone to play Fuzz ball
We even have our own resident cake maker Lisa
Dyson who has produced some of the most
wonderful cakes; ranging from pool balls,
football shirts and our favourite, the burger
We are still looking for more volunteers to help
run the activities, as we want the Youth Café to
grow and prosper. To do this we need more help
to cover when others are off. If you want to help
and be a part of a fantastic project, then please
speak to me .

Kath Dryden VMH
Kathleen Nora Murray was born in Rochford on
the 23 May 1925, spending most of her young
life in Hackney East London.
During the war she was evacuated to Norfolk
and at the age of 16 proudly
joined the WAAF where she was
to eventually meet Maurice.
During the war years Kath
became involved with Radar
defences and was the principal
operator when the dam-buster
raids took place – Hitler seemed
to take this as a personal affront
because soon after she had to
survive a direct hit on the family
home when on leave.
Kath finished her war service
riding a bike around Stanmore
paying the weekly rents for
billets in the area. Kath and
Maurice were married in 1946,
settled in Hackney and not long
after, in 1947, John arrived.
They later moved to a tenement
in Leyton where John can still remember row
upon row of flower pots lined up on the fire
escape. Kath's Grandfather was President of the
Auricular society and it was this group of plants
that first got Kath excited about horticulture.
During this time Kath was captain of the 5th
Essex Lifebuoys whilst Maurice was captain of
the local boy's brigade. She was also involved
with the inner wheel, the ladies arm of the
Rotarians and ladies Masonic lodge
In the Late 50's the family moved to Loughton
where her horticultural career really took off.
She joined the Alpine Garden Society in 1959
and with the increasing need for more space for
her ever growing plant collection, moved to
Lower Sheering in 1968 where she and Maurice
developed 'Berries' to what it is today, some 40
years later.
Her skills as a showman are legendary so as
Director of shows in 1972 (till 1981) she was
truly in her element – shows meant people and
Kath was always at her best with people - giving
advice, giving help, and usually giving orders but always giving.
Kath continued her meteoric rise in the Society
by becoming a Vice-President in 1982, President
of the Society in 1983 and a VMH (Victoria
medal of honour in horticulture) in 1985 for
services to Alpine plants, a field in which she
had already become legendary.
The loss of Maurice left a big hole in Kath's life;
nobody could match his stoic dedication or
replace the often calming influence he had upon
her.
John says that it is now much to his regret that
he didn't inherit his mum’s genius for things
horticultural - his interests were more overhead
cam than underground corm — try as she might
she never managed to turn the worm. But when
he and Sue moved to their
new home in the Lake
District Kath gave John
seven narcissus bulbs in an
effort to establish a northern
annex of ‘Berries’ - he is
delighted to say that they
flourish to this day these
seven
narcissus
being
symbolised in his floral
tribute. He also said that he
knows she was totally
devoted to the family,
standing by them during all
the ups and downs, never
judgmental, always there for
every one of them.
She was a mentor, valued
advisor and an incredible
influence on many of those
assembled to celebrate her
life here today. Kath Dryden VMH - plants
woman extraordinaire, loving mother, doting
grandmother, besotted great-grandmother,
irreplaceable friend. Our Kath.

Friends of St Mary's Sheering
SELL-OUT CONCERT RECEIVES WARM RESPONSE!
On Saturday 9th May the Friends of St Mary's
held their 6th Annual Concert. Once again the
building was packed to the rafters in anticipation
of another thoroughly entertaining evening of
music-making, and we were not disappointed.
As we took our seats, Shirley Dyson played a
collection of gentle melodies on her harp and
this very much set the scene for a relaxing
evening of music reminiscent of the gentler pace
of a bygone era.
Chris Harriss skillfully compered the event something of a tradition now - stepping in and
out of performances (quite literally at times) to
introduce the acts with his usual supplementary
background information and anecdotes. He
remembered to duck back into the orchestra and
brass ensemble just in time to play the tuba
himself.
The young instrumentalists ranged in ages from
9 to 17, some returning after last year's concert.
It is always a great pleasure to see how much
they have grown in musical ability (and size!)
over the past year.
We began the evening with the rousing favourite:
How great Thou Art and were encouraged to join
in with the church choir, accompanied by the
orchestra and Lydia Taylor on the organ. Maddy
Hayes then introduced the solo performances
with an assured rendition of two contrasting
pieces: My Valentine and Cha-Cha-Cha. This was
followed throughout the concert with further
delightful solos on the piano by Sophie Pallet,
Cira Fletcher and Tracey Kemp, the former two
young ladies playing for the first time at St
Mary's but their confident playing belying this.
Lydia Marshall and Edward Dixon also dueted on
the piano with evident enjoyment, playing:
London’s Burning and Ecossaise.
Two more newcomers this year were 13 year-old
identical twins Grace and Eloise Hardy who
wowed the audience with truly accomplished
playing on the flute and harp respectively. Ideal
duet partners, they performed Morning has
Broken so beautifully that the appreciative
audience were rewarded with an encore of
Greensleeves. Grace later returned to play the
beautifully lyrical Sicilienne by Paradis on her
flute and then Eloise (ably assisted by her
stalwart parents) took to the stage again with
her harp to give us Variations on a Welsh carol
and another well deserved encore of The Cockle
Gatherer.
The younger performances were punctuated by
the slightly more mature soloists Vernon Baker
and Philip Taylor who branched out on their own
this year but were nonetheless just as
entertaining. Vernon sang the Flanders and
Swann number Slow Train which reflects on the
sad loss of stations such as Kirby Muxloe and

the slow trains from Miller's Dale to Tideswell.
Philip woke us from our nostalgic reverie with a
subtly updated version of Gilbert and Sullivan's
Nightmare Song – painting an all too vivid
picture of a restless night spent worrying about
amongst other things current financial concerns.
The children's choir delighted us with two wellknown songs: Who will buy this wonderful
morning? and Can you feel the love tonight? and,
though fewer in numbers than last year, sang
out with clarity and confidence. A variety of
singing
complemented
the
instrumental
numbers, with Lydia Taylor's Calando singers
performing the seasonal Now is the month of
Maying followed by Home is a special kind of
feeling and St Mary's choir singing a heavenly
rendition of Ave Maria.
Soprano soloist Amy Taylor teamed up with her
father Philip to sing Words of praise by Medema
and later returned to give a captivating
performance of Strover's He's alive! The resonant
Barbershop group brought a lighter note to the
evening, singing Jeanie with the light brown hair
and then the lively spiritual Little Innocent Lamb.
Following a further opportunity for audience
participation with the gentler hymn Make me a
channel, the second half brought impressive
performances from two grade 8 students, cellist
Harriet Walker and clarinetist Lauren Marshall.

attends classes at the Guildhall School of Music

every Saturday, stunned the congregation with
her talented rendition of Saint-Saens’ Allegro
appassionato. Lauren Marshall continued the
evening’s gentle nostalgic mood with Summer
from the Victorian Garden Suite accompanied by
Lydia Taylor on the piano. The light rustic tones
reminded us of the peace and tranquility of a
well-tended kitchen garden at the end of the day.
We were soon brought back to earth, however,
with her second piece - the theme from Ground
Force which conjured up the frantic pace of reworking your whole back garden in just two
days!
After a rousing rendering of Haydn’s The
Heavens are telling by St Mary’s Choir and
friends, the concert was brought to a close with
prayer and thanks given by Associate Minister,
Brian Surtees before we were encouraged to join
in with the uplifting hymn:
I’ll go in the
strength. Refreshments followed in the form of a
wonderful spread laid out in the church room by
members of the congregation.
Yet again this was an immensely enjoyable
occasion with an impressive variety of musical
talent both young and older. Our thanks go to
Musical Director, Lydia Taylor for her untiring
and enthusiastic masterminding of the whole
event and to all those whose hard work behind
the scenes helped make it such a memorable
evening.

New Food and Garden Waste Collection
Taken from EFDC website
A new, weekly doorstep recycling
collection of mixed food and
garden waste is set to begin in
September.
Every household using the current
whe e l i e b i n b a s e d r e fus e
collection system will be able to
benefit from the new service. This
new food and garden recycling
service will be collected via a new
wheelie bin which will be distributed
throughout August.
Your new wheelie bin will take practically all
the cooked and uncooked food waste from
your kitchen and also the garden waste that
currently goes into biodegradable sacks and
it will be collected every week.
We will also be providing you with a kitchen
caddy for the storage of your food leftovers
before you put the waste
into your new wheelie bin.
Kitchen caddies are neat,
small, plastic containers
designed to sit on your
kitchen worktop. They
can be stored in your
cupboard and provide a
day to day receptacle for
your food waste. Then, as
and when you choose, you simply transfer
your food from the caddy into your new
wheelie bin.
Why are we Introducing this Service?
than the current bio-degradable sacks.
By collecting food waste the council can
avoid financial penalties in the
comi ng years for sendi ng
biodegradable waste to landfill.
The council has also had to
evaluate the financial cost of the
fortnightly green waste service
which has been increasing
dramatically due to the cost of
the biodegradable sacks.
The new service is available to all
properties that currently have a wheelie bin
collection for domestic waste. Flats using
communal bins will not receive this service
straight away. The service will be phased in
over a period of time. If you live in a flat and
would like more information please contact
us on 01992 564608.

RECYCLING and WASTE
The food we needlessly throw away ends up
in landfill sites. It is estimated that as
consumers we throw away 1/3 of all the food
we buy. This means that one in every three
shopping bags we fill at our local
supermarket ends up in our refuse.
Refuse Every Thursday until 5 September
As the food rots in landfill is emits harmful
gases. It is estimated that in the United
Kingdom rotting food in landfill sites
generates the same CO2 as emitted by every
fifth car on UK roads. It’s not just CO2 and
methane that’s released when the food goes
to landfill that’s the problem, but also the
energy spent producing, storing and
transporting the food to us. Reducing the
impact of this form of pollution is very
important.
Clear Sacks Recyclable Paper, Card, Tins,
When we consulted you in the Forester
magazine last year, you told us clearly that
you preferred food waste to be collected

My great grandfather (surname Brown) was a

years of the last century. I would love to find
out more about him and his family. Would
anyone in the village know anything about
him?

I am trying to trace the family on my Father’s

• Scarce, like all orchids, but
numerous in suitable sites;

Country buses are different, but when I was
growing up in London you could wait hours
for a number 22 – and then two would come
along together. This month Sheering has two
significant ‘goodbyes’, saying farewell to two
people who between them have served the
community for over 50 years. Philip Hays is
leaving Sheering school and after a period of
leave Tim Potter says goodbye to his role as
the first incumbent of the united benefice of
Hatfield Heath and Sheering. The community
has much to thank both Philip and Tim for and
it was natural that as Vicar and Church School
leader, they worked closely together.
Neither Tim nor Philip are moving far away
and so there are bound to be opportunities for
old friendships to be continued and memories
to be shared. Both the Church and the School
will be entering new phases of development
and both have the benefit of strong
foundations built on hard work and
commitment. These will be as strong a
reminder of the work accomplished by Tim
and Philip as the “Hays library” and Tim’s
name on the board listing all Sheering’s
priests.
When I used to wait for the number 22 bus I
could never make up my mind whether to try
to squeeze onto the one that was just leaving,
or wait for the one just about to pull up. I
often forgot to look at the destination blind
and made the wrong choice – boarding the
one that was only going half way to my
destination. All this rambling about buses in
the 1960’s is my clumsy way of introducing
something that the bible says about
embracing new things and new situations:
“No one puts new wine into old wineskins;
otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and
the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one
puts new wine into fresh wineskins.” Sheering
School will be welcoming Mrs Julie Lorkins in
September, but the Church will have to wait a
while longer before a new incumbent is
appointed. Both the School and the Church
will be excited by the new opportunities the
future will bring and at times we may need to
guard against thinking things like “I wish it
could be like it was in so-and-so’s time”.
What is true for churches and schools is true
for people too.
Jesus’ comments about
wineskins were made to remind us that the
free gift of God’s love is so much better than
struggling to try to “make yourself good
enough for God to notice”. I know Tim and
Philip well enough to know that they would
agree, and have found Jesus’ words “Come to
me, all you that are weary and are carrying
heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” to be
true time and time again. This is something
that 3 members of our congregation talked
about when they were confirmed by the
Bishop of Barking in July. I think they would
say to us “when it comes to matters of belief,
don’t leave it too long and miss the bus”.

St Mary’s Sheering’s Grade 1 Listed Church.
The people of St Mary’s have responsibility for one of the finest buildings in the area. We are there
for the community and are always pleased when people comment on the well kept building and
churchyard.
Last winter we nearly had some serious damage when one of the Church heaters started to smoulder.
Expert opinion is that the heating and lighting systems are in need of replacement and the likely bill
is going to be close to £40,000.
This is a large sum to raise, but with the help of the “Friends of St Mary’s” we already have about a
quarter of the sum needed. The Church will be seeking grants from various bodies and if you are not
already a member would encourage you to consider joining the “Friends” who have promoted events
like the Quiz, recent Concert and “Reptile Afternoon” which raise funds and provide lots of
enjoyment for those attending. Later in the summer there is a boat trip and other events are in the
pipeline. “Friends” often have a discount on ticket prices and receive a regular newsletter.
The cost is £10 a year (£5 if unwaged).

Lifeline Romania with Chesterfords Aid
This consisted of a hard wooden platform,
without a mattress.
LRCA is a small local charity that has been
helping some of the poorest people in
Romania for about 18 years. All our English
helpers are volunteers, and one person in
Romania is employed by us.
Some people have more problems than most
English people can imagine.
Twice a year we take a
large lorry to Romania,
filled with goods donated
by people in this area.
About half the goods are
given away free to people
who cannot afford to buy
even basic necessities.
Some of these people live
in small mud-brick houses
and steel containers.
PLEASE CAN YOU HELP? Any unwanted beds,
bedding, or shoes could make a big

to
someone. Everything
needs to be in good
condition and clean –
we don't take dirty
things, and in any

they don't have any shoes. Without education
they are condemned to poverty for the rest
of their life – and their children too.
LRCA helps some of these very poor families,
but we never have enough shoes or beds to
meet the needs.
Living in a box
Before giving any bed to anyone, we always
ask them what sort of floor they have. Many
families have a mud floor, and need a bed on
legs. Mud floors have no damp-proof course,
and divans can easily get wet and go mouldy;
so these are reserved for people with better
floors. We were amazed to be told that one
couple had a steel floor!
This floor allowed us to give them a
comfortable bed, but we wanted to know
more. They explained that they lived in a
"baraca"; this is simply a steel container of
the type seen on container ships and
container lorries. It had been modified with
the addition of electricity, a door and two
windows, and there were four of these oneroom containers in one street. They were
used for emergency housing. We visited the
family at home and found them sitting in
semi-darkness. They could not afford to use
the electric light.
The family owned one bed, a single metal
bed. They also had a makeshift bed, like so
many people in the poorer parts of Romania.
The next trip is likely to be in October but
this is an ongoing project so if people have
things available after that date, those goods
could go next year.
