REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S INTERVIEW
LUCIANO - “Bearer
Of The Light”
By Strictly Roots
(Cont’d from Sept. 2005 issue}
R: As you speak of the
need, I was reading
Ecclesiastes the other night
and I want to know what you
make of this statement. “...
The wise man’s heart dwells in
the house of sadness but
foolish man dwells in the
house of mirth...”.
What
makes Luciano sad and what
does Luciano make of that
statement?
LUCIANO: What I make of
that statement is that the wise
man sees the sorrow that is
ahead you know because
today’s happiness is just for
awhile you know. Because
even though people may be
frolicking and dancing today,
tomorrow cometh sorrow. The
system
is
set
up
on
destruction. The whole world
is set up and geared up on
destruction. Any minute now
you can hear anything happen
because the system is not
right. Injustice, inequality, the
racism, the apartheid, the
jealousy, the grudge, the
hatred is being generated and
anytime you hear its pure
competition. They don’t have
talent exposure anymore they
S

have
Everything is a war. Even in the
music they are bringing war
and competition. So we see it’s
really a struggle. It’s a spiritual
struggle. But the wise man
now, he will always, no matter
what, deep in the depths of a
wise man’s being he can find
solace with JAH. Cause he
knows only in JAH he can
really reassure his happiness,
cause all other happiness is
fabricated. Today you’re happy,
tomorrow you’re sad you know.
SR: You talked about going
into the hills. What prompted
you to go into the hills and
remove yourself from the
society at large?
LUCIANO: When I became
involved
in
the
music
fraternity, I saw the need to
draw fahwud back into the hills
where I could really reconnect
with the essence of I and I
existence and connect with
the ancient spirits and become
more, you know, in touch with
my people, away from the
busy schedules of touring and
all that because a lot of
pressure was coming on and I
saw the need to just ease off
ah di scene and [pause]
SR: Take a break
LUCIANO: [laughing] tek a
break. Yow, everyone need a
break inna life. Everyone need
some time fi gwaan, you know,
reflect and take a deep breath
before I come again. If I didn’t
do that, probably I wouldn’t be
here today. That has made me
stronger in many ways
spiritually and has given me
time to rest, reflect, gear up
and see how to approach this
thing. Take care of myself and
come
fahwud
stronger
[laughing].
SR: What is your view on
Reggae music in Canada?
LUCIANO: I see the music
as the spirit of God and
anywhere the spirit of JAH tek
unto a one he can manifest
there. Some people think you
have to go to Jamaica to make
it. I don’t believe that.
Anywhere you are in the world,
once your music is to a
standard and you keep your
thing real, your beats proper,
your lyrics clean and your
arrangement right, anywhere
you are you will hit the world
and that is JAH, bcause you
have JAH coming out of every
walk of life.. The music is like
that. The music will find you in
any corner.. [but]. Some people
are shallow minded, some of
the fans can be even more
political than the politicians.
Because they feel that if you
are not coming out of Jamaica,
they do not want to support. I
don’t believe so.
SR: I know you have a
limited amount of time but we
are going to ask a couple more
questions if the I will bear with
us.
LUCIANO: Yes, my brother.
SR: In terms of Rastafari
we see in Jamaica and here in
Canada a lot of people
wrapping up their heads and
calling
themselves
BoBo
Shanti and carrying on a
certain way. They know how to
make all the signs and symbols
and it’s apparent that many of
them have not read as a Rasta
person should to know what’s
really going on. What is your
view on what I consider to be a
thuggish mentality amongst
some of the brothers that are
calling themselves Rastafari
and creating some sort of
division amongst I and I?.
LUCIANO: Alright. Very
good question my brother. In
Jamaica, in the Ras Tafar I
movement everywhere from
Jamaica
right
back
to
Timbuktu we see this sort of
segregation happening and it’s
a form of politics and
infiltration happening to I and I
camp because it wasn’t like
this. I believe the same way the
CIA will send out people fi find
prophets fi kill them the same
way they will infiltrate I and I
tradition. In the same way they
will educate some people,
some educated fools that
come in I and I tradition and try
fi destroy it. Because there is
no way I can go against the
grain. His Majesty has set the
protocol. His Majesty is the
example. His Majesty himself
says he embraces the Bible.
When we go in the Bible, The
Bible speaks of Christ, it
speaks of the Emperor, it
speaks of Yahweh, the God of
Jacob and Isiah. It’s just for us
now to be humble in ourselves
to accept the teachings of His
Majesty, to receive the truth in
our lives and then let the works
of JAH manifest in I and I.
Some man gone off with their
own teachings, some waan
bun dis, some waan bun dat,
so they are leaning on their
own mis-understandings. The
truth is there are some
Rastafarians
who
are
meditational
Rastafarians.
These brothers take time to
meditate and to concentrate
upon the right works.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE VIEWS
CANADIAN REGGAE
MUSIC SCENE
JuLion’s Views
s Canadian reggae
grows in stature so
do the responsibilities of the
participants within the genre.
Natural disaster relief, the
AIDS pandemic in Africa,
youth gun violence, spiritual
connection are all important
issues that must be tackled
and conquered by the most
played and popular music on
the planet. It is the humble
opinion of this writer that
much of the above stems
from a complete lack of
spiritual connection.
A
By this I mean, for
instance,
in
a
natural
disaster like New Orleans, a
more
spiritually
sound
president of the U.S.A would
have delivered relief much
sooner than what actually
occurred. I believe the genre
of reggae must continue to
bring Jah Almighty to all who
need him. Buddha, Islam,
Methodist,
Presbyterian,
Catholic,
Seventh
Day
Jehovah’s
Adventist,
Witness, Jah Rastafari...
bring God back into our
schools, our lives, our
families.
True belief IS NOT
JUDGING, it is respect of
self, respect for others and
tolerance to difference. With
strong spiritual values there
can be no ‘isms’. Reggae
and Rastafari speak of this.
Many of us growing up in the
West Indies were ‘forced’ to
go to church every Sunday /
Saturday. Those that were
touched by the words in the
Psalms, Proverbs as well as
many other biblical teachings
could not and would not think
it were feasible to arbitrarily
take human life as if it were
NOTHING!!
Reggae artists, just by
the
way
they
carry
themselves send a very
positive message. Some HipHop as well as some
dancehall artists who glorify
‘Gangsta’ behavior are at the
forefront of pop culture and
their messages and imagery
on BET and MUCH are the
bytes of information that
dominate the marketplace as
well as our very lives. We in
the Roots & Culture of
Canadian and worldwide
reggae genre must break into
the psyche of the industry as
only we can and must
achieve phenomenal levels of
monetary
success
and
international fame so that we
can give the misguided
generation
another
alternative to ‘badness’.
As we grow fiscally, our
spiritual
growth
must
coincide with our success.
“In order to lead, one must
be willing to serve”. Serve
humanity!

Children... orphans, babies.
When you are at home, pick
up toddler pictures of you
own children and put a face
on the dead or dying. I do! I
think of my wife and I dying
of AIDS, leaving behind our
children
to
fend
for
themselves, also dying of
AIDS.
The heartbreaking
thing for me isn’t only the
thought of my children dying
or the suffering that they
would face prior to the death
but the biggest, burning,
overwhelming dread is... who
is there to love them? Who is
there to cuddle them through
their pain and suffering?
Who loves them?
Well, I do! I love them all
but am fiscally unable to
show it, so we created

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S “LIVE SHOWS” REVIEWS
SUGAR MINOTT
GIVES CALGARY
FANS A NIGHT TO
REMEMBER!
By Lisa Connors
n Wednesday October
26th,
2005
DEEP
ENTERTAINMENT presented a
truly unforgettable reggae
event! The original “Mr Fix it”
Sweet Sugar Minott made a
last minute appearance at
Brew Brothers in Calgary while
on his Canada Tour 2005.
Needless to say, it was a
pleasant surprise for Calgary
reggae fans!
O
Although the event didn’t
get a lot of time for promotion,
word got around quickly and
Sugar Minott’s fans came out
in numbers to show their
support!
The
evening
showcased a host of great
entertainers including Ibo and
KinDread, Mello G, as well as
Fire Pashon (daughter of Sugar
Minott), Itawe, Jus Goodie and
King Jazzy.
The evening got underway
in fine style with Ibo and
KinDread, who never fail to get
a crowd to its feet! Montreal’s
Mello G made a guest
appearance adding some spice
to the show. The evening
continued on with one great
act after another! Jamaica’s
Itawe put on a powerful roots
rock set. Fire Pashon came on
strong with a wicked deejay
style performance. Her hard
hitting socially conscious lyrics
and a touch of humor made a
lasting impression on the
crowd. Jus Goodie and King
Jazzy followed in the same
conscious flow keeping the
vibes up.
The energy level reached a
fever pitch when Sugar Minott
hit the stage! He received a
welcome fit for a King with
loud cheers from adoring fans,
especially the ladies! He dove
straight in with a slew of hit
tunes like Herbsman Hustling,
Oh Mr DC, and Jah Jah
Children! Sugar’s performance
was polished and professional,
as any long-time fan would
have expected.
His sweet, soulful voice has
really stood the test of time.
After more than 30 years in the
business, he still sounds
fantastic! His intense energy
had everybody rocking and
singing in unison. Sugar gave
his fans all they wanted and
more! Of course the audience
demanded an encore!
He
delivered and left Calgary
reggae fans with a night to
remember! ***

I made my way across the room
I couldn’t help but notice there
were
beautiful
people
everywhere! Not only are
Ethiopians beautiful, they are
also warm and welcoming.
Being one of only few nonEthiopians at the show I
thought I may have felt a little
out of place but the opposite
was true.
Teddy’s band began the
concert with a beautiful
instrumental tribute to one of
Teddy’s biggest inspirations,
Bob Marley. The crowd of 800
strong was loving the music,
dancing with great anticipation
to see their most popular
performer grace the stage. It
was mass hysteria from the
moment Teddy hit the stage!
All arms were raised in the air
as the ladies screamed in
admiration!
Teddy
even
pleaded with security to
remove the barriers between
him and the audience!
He worked the stage with
charm and charisma singing
traditional Amharic ballads,
love songs, as well as political
and spiritual music. Teddy
performed
three
highly
energetic, heartfelt sets lasting
more than three hours! All this
without even breaking a sweat!
Unbelievable!! A tremendous
sense of love, unity and Jah
could be felt throughout the
hall. I understand why many
refer to Teddy as a “modern
day Bob Marley”! He is an
incredibly spirited performer.
If you haven’t had the honor of
taking in a Teddy Afro show, be
sure not to miss your next
chance!

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S INTERVIEW
LUCIANO
(Cont’d. from page 5)
ut we have some
imitational rascals, I
wouldn’t even say Rastas, who
just see man grow locks and
see the powers, dem run go
grow it too, dem see man mek
sign with the seal, dem run go
mek sign to, dem see man with
rod, dem run go get rod. But fi
dem rod coming like when
Aaron did throw down his rod
and the magicians throw down
dem rod and Aaron rod eat up
fi dem own. We are not
surprised to see some of them
working miracles too because
that was the days of old so it is
today. Many of dem a guh
come and call JAH name and
do all some terrible things in
JAH name too. But we have to
know that this is how it was
from the beginning. We have
B
to know them by their fruits
now. By their fruits you shall
know them. If a man doesn’t
have patience, if a man
doesn’t have long suffering, if
a man doesn’t have tolerance,
if a man doesn’t have control
of speech all these things,
charity and all these things
then they are not really
trodding the way of Ras Tafar I.
Ras Tafar I is love, Ras Tafar I
is peace, Ras Tafar I is abiding.
Ras Tafar I is a perfect
tradition, it’s the way of man,
it’s the way how we should
walk. If we follow the footsteps
of Ras Tafar I, I and I will find
happiness abundantly. I grew
up in the church and I saw that
something was lacking, I went
in search, a deeper search, to
find myself. I found His
Majesty as the Defender of the
same
faith
that
these
Christians are defending. But
he’s the greatest defender
they could ever have but they
do not want to appreciate his
Majesty as the greatest
defender. Up to the age of
seventy-two, His Majesty
served
perfectly
as
a
theocratic Emperor to defend I
and I and today it’s over 6000
Churches that His Majesty has
built. When you go into some
of these Churches they don’t
even want to call His Majesty’s
name. So there is a lot of
politics surrounding the whole
tradition of I and I people. It’s
just we as upfull ones now, see
the light and dwell in the light
and stay away from the
darkness, ‘cause he who
dwelleth in the light shall not
be overcome by darkness, you
know.
cream of the crop.
SR: They are going to love
that. I’m looking forward to
that myself. Finally, your fans
would like to know what is
your favorite food, color and
drink.
LUCIANO: Alright. Any
thing with vegetables I and I
give thanks for you know.
Green vegetables. There is a
lot of life in green vegetables
like partially steamed broccoli
and cucumbers. The less
white food and white drink you
have, the better it is for a
person. I have discovered , the
greener the thing, the richer it
makes your blood. And I love a
nice pot of stew, cooked ,
steamed down you know.
I
love blue, blue is my real color
as a Dannite you know. I love
green too still. When I’m on the
tradition as a defender of the
faith more time I go out in my
forest green.
SR: What do you have
coming up for your fans
musically?
LUCIANO: I’m working on a
Luciano gospel album and I’ll
have more natural acoustic
sounds, especially of the
guitar. I will be playing most of
my instruments. I think that’s
like the soul of Luciano. I have
so much more to give to the
people you know. I’ve been
singing a lot of songs and most
of my songs are on heavy
rhythms. People know me for
that, dancehall roots rocking
reggae, I have it locked, even
dubplates mi have lock. So it’s
for me now to bring the true
essence of the spirit, the finest
of the brew [laughing], the
SR: I know you have to go
now. Blessed love and give
thanks for the interview, seen,
and it’s always good to be in
the I presence.
LUCIANO: Thank you very
much, one heart. RastafarI.

SOUND EXPLOSION
Starting Sound Explosion
Productions Inc. has been a
life long dream for David
Gardner.
As a little boy
growing up in Jamaica, he
remembers attending the local
roots reggae dances and
shows, and fell in love with the
production of the event, just as
much as his love for reggae
music.
He was 8 years old, and
now 20+ years later, with all of
the necessary resources in
place, the existence of Sound
Explosion Productions Inc.
Sound Explosion took the
production industry by storm
from early 2004.
Since then, it has proven to
be one of the fastest growing
production companies in the
history of the industry. With
only 2 years in the business,
the company has been able to
secure such names in the
reggae community as Elephant
Man,
Capleton, Coco Tea,
Bounty Killa, Buju Banton. But
outside
of
the
reggae
community, the company has
been touring with major
Canadian bands such as Blue
Rodeo, Tea Party and The
Doors, and has worked in just
about every major venue
across
Canada
including
Toronto’s Air Canada Centre,
Rogers Centre, International
Centre and much much more.
Sound
Explosion
Productions has encountered
great success since its
inception. This success has
not come without many
sacrifices and obstacles. It is
anticipated and expected that
this 20 year old dream
company will continue to rise
and succeed for many years to
come.

HUMBLE PROFILE
umble, born Simon

The group home councillor by

musician unique in sound,

goal,” says Humble, whose
artist names suits his shy,
quiet demeanor. A man of his
word, Humble’s debut album is
chalk full of inspirational and
uplifting songs.
“The track
“Hard to See” explains the
whole album,” says Humble.
“Sometimes it’s hard to see
our culture. Sometimes it’s
hard to see who you are as a
person.
H
A self-taught guitarist,
Humble learned primarily by
his musical intuition and by
watching others. Time went
on and Humble eventually
recorded a four-track demo,
with the help of local producer
Roger B. The demo, which
included the aforementioned
“The Other Side”, landed in
the hands of Soundcheck
