Community - Coeur d`Alene Chamber of Commerce
“Connecting you to the heart
of the
Community”
2010 Annual Report
Message from the Chairman of the Board
Wow! Where did the year go! It seems only a short time ago that I accepted the opportunity to
serve as your chairman. If you recall we were challenged with finding a new CEO and searching for ways to replace declining revenues. Thankfully many dedicated people came together to
meet these challenges. Thank you Mark Fisher for chairing the search committee. Thank you
Eilleen, Skip, Barb and Ginger for diligently working through the rigorous process of finding our
new leader.
Upon bringing our new CEO/President, Todd Christensen on board in January 2010, the
Executive Committee and Board embarked on a process of solidifying our organizational
functionality and fiscal responsibilities during these challenging economic times. Thank you all for
your commitment and guidance.
Our organization has always focused on membership and the foundation of providing programs
of great value to the business needs of community. This year was no different, and is why today
our Membership stands at 1,200+.
Our organization would not be as strong as it is today if it were not for the immense time, energy
and commitment of the hundreds who serve on our committees. A big thanks to all of you and
especially those who serve as committee chairs: Sue Spinazza, Jennifer Riley, LaDonna
Beaumont, Mike Ward, Carrie Oja, Tyler Simon, Tim Kastning and John Little.
A quick review of the past year must acknowledge the unique and highly successful China
travel mission. Todd Christensen must be given the credit for bringing this concept to the Board.
Todd led the way in developing this new program to encourage international trade and cultural
awareness. The successful China trip meets these objectives and generates revenue for the
Chamber. Ginger Dalvini, Manager of Operations/Finance at the Chamber, is richly deserving of
praise for the volume of organizational efforts needed to operate this new program. Thank you
Ginger. Lastly, we need to thank Jim Thompson and the Press for helping to successfully market
this program and for their contribution in helping bring back our printed newsletter. Thank you
Jim.
Other noteworthy heights of the year must include the KTEC victory, the very upbeat,
Upbeat Breakfasts, great business-to-business networking opportunities, a successful auction,
great events, focused tourism advertising campaigns, two terrific leadership classes, and the
retirement of one terrifically dedicated staff member, Toni Sayler. We will miss you Toni.
We already have had a jump-start on the next chapter of our great organization with the first
Board Retreat in several years. I have great confidence that under Skip Peterson’s leadership,
the Coeur d’Alene Area Chamber of Commerce will flourish in 2011.
Sincerely,
Steve Wilson
2010 Chairman of the Board

officers, thanks to our outgoing officers and board members, and recognition of the Citizen of the
Year and the Ed Abbott Volunteer of the Year.
After Hours Business Fair
The After Hours Business Fair is Coeur d’Alene’s largest business gathering and networking
opportunity. It is organized by the Chamber each February and is always sold out with over 125
businesses marketing themselves to the 3,000 people who attend.
Aw$um Auction
The Aw$um Auction is one of the Chamber’s major fund raisers, the proceeds from which
support other committee activities and programs. It’s an exciting event for all involved and is
produced by the Chamber’s Commodores.
Business After Hours
For many years, the Chamber has offered Business After Hours (BAH) as a networking event
and an opportunity for Members to show off their offices or facilities. In 2010, BAH sponsors
were Holiday Inn Express, ROW Adventures, Edward Jones investments, Eric E. Soles &
Dahlberg Architects, P.A. & Abbotswood Design Group, Inc., Michael D’s Eatery, Koerner’s
Furniture, Time Warner Cable, Coeur d’Alene Homes, Phones Plus, Kiemle & Hagood
Company, and the Yacht Club-Hagadone Marine Division.

Coffee and Contacts is a powerful speed networking opportunity, designed to give you one-onone time with many other Chamber businesses. Held every quarter, it is a fun way for businesses
to meet each other while learning networking tips and how to promote company messages.
Community Events
The Chamber of Commerce is directly involved in hosting a variety of events that benefit our
community. Among them are the 4th of July Festival, the Wooden Boat Show, the Coeur
d’Alene Junior Miss Program, the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon & Duathlon, and Ford Ironman
Coeur d’Alene.
Leadership Programs
This year the Chamber graduated the 26th class from Leadership Coeur d’Alene. We also
organized the Executive Round Table to provide training and executive support for our
Members.
Hard Hats, Hammers & Hot Dogs (H-4)
The Workforce Development Task Force H-4 is a hands on construction and manufacturing
fair for junior and senior high school students. This fair introduces students to careers in those
industries and allows them to practice the skills that would be performed on the job.
Job Fair
The Workforce Development Task Force Job Fair is an opportunity to assist in finding qualified
candidates for positions within your organization. This event is for businesses who want to
increase their visibility and recruit applicants for their employment needs.
Legislative Affairs
In a continued effort to speak as one voice for our business community, the Chamber sent five
community leaders to Washington DC, along with the Spokane Chamber, to meet with officials
and voice issues and concerns relative to our area. In addition, the Chamber hosted several
public candidates forums throughout the year to better inform the community about candidates
and their supported issues.
Member and Community Promotion
Chamber Members are promoted through our website, Annual Business Directory,
Visitor Center and more. Over 33,000 people come through our building each year, giving our
Members exclusive access to that market. The Chamber Commodores travel to
communities in Idaho, Washington and Canada, promoting Coeur d’Alene with the
Commodore float, which has placed first in six parades in the last year.
Public Policy Events
One of the Chamber’s key strategic objectives is to represent the Coeur d’Alene area
business community in local, regional, state and federal legislative issues. This is done
primarily by the Chamber’s Public Policy Committee which this year organized a Legislative
Sendoff and Welcome Back as well as Coeur d’Alene Day at the Legislature. The
Public Policy Committee meets weekly via conference call with our North Idaho Legislators
to monitor legislative progress on Chamber positions and issues.
Sporting Events
The Coeur d’Alene Convention Visitors Bureau has helped make Coeur d’Alene the ultimate
destination for sporting events. Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene celebrated its 7th successful iron
distance triathlon while the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon & Duathlon registered more than 1,005
athletes for its 27th annual event and has been named the Pacific Northwest Regional Championship for 2011 and 2012 by U.S.A. Triathlon.

mind, keeps our Members positive, and provides them a forum to promote their businesses. Among the speakers in 2010 were County Commissioner, Rick Currie, Coeur d’Alene

Message from the Incoming
Chairman of the Board
Greetings Fellow & Future Chamber Members,
Wow! Another challenging year is starting to wind down in beautiful Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
I would like to take a moment to thank all of our current Chamber Members for their ongoing
support and extend an invitation to all businesses that are not currently members to research the
benefits we offer. You will find that the small investment you make in the Chamber will yield HUGE
dividends in the long run.
Being a small business owner myself, I can directly relate to the hills and valleys that are inherent in business. However, regardless of whether you are a one person operation or a
business with several thousand employees, we all share the common goal of both staying in business and hopefully growing our enterprise. That is where the Coeur d’Alene Area
Chamber of Commerce comes in.
Your Chamber of Commerce is the single most powerful voice in our community for business
and your support is vital to our collective success. No other organization has the ability to advocate for your business and the Coeur d’Alene community like the Chamber. Our strength
is directly proportional to membership and the greater our numbers, the more programs,
opportunities and influence we can bring to bear on behalf of all businesses in our area. A
prime example of this “voice” was the work our Convention and Visitors Bureau did that
resulted in a $347,000 grant for 2010-11…..the largest in the state.
As we approach our Chamber’s 100 year anniversary in 2012, I can envision us reaching the
2000+ member mark. I know this may seem a lofty goal, but it is totally achievable if we work
together. Additionally, with our new CEO/President, Todd Christensen, firmly on board, we have
a leader who is helping us chart a course to Coeur d’Alene’s future. He brings to us a renewed
energy and under his guidance, the Coeur d’Alene Chamber will remain focused and committed
to advocating for both the local tourism industry, as well as the needs and issues specific to the
non-tourism based businesses in our community.
In closing, I invite you to get actively involved with the Chamber. Whether it be serving
on a committee, utilizing marketing opportunities or attending one of the many Chamber
networking events, all are great ways to promote your business and are your connections to success. Remember, success in business, much as it is in life, is not about working harder, it’s about
working smarter.
The Chamber Board of Directors, our professional staff members and numerous volunteers are
100% committed to working hard on your behalf to ensure the future of Coeur d’Alene’s economy
and our community’s quality of life. Cheers!
Sincerely,
Skip Peterson
