Brought to you by
Destination Chippendale
Since its establishment in 2010, the Chippendale Creative Precinct (CCP),
now rebranded to Destination Chippendale, has transformed from a newly
emerged, innovative undertaking to a nuanced network of over 20 galleries,
charming cafes and renowned restaurants, as well as avant-garde businesses
and individuals.
The CCP has successfully molded the area into an arts, food, and lifestyle
destination that excites even the most cultivated palate and the seasoned
gallery-goer.
In the midst of it all stands Central Park, an urban global village where city
meets nature. Visitors can eat, shop and play at the Living Mall or stroll
through the Chippendale Green, a creative playground for all to enjoy.
Beneath Central Park’s vertical garden walls, the celebrated Kensington Street
serves as a focal point of ingenuity, boasting exquisite eateries ranging from
casual hawker-style dining to polished culinary marvels, and from quirky
boutiques to sophisticated cosmetic clinics.
Additionally, visitors are invited on various cultural odysseys such as
time- travelling strolls through Chippendale’s past on our monthly Explore
Chippendale Historical Walking Tours, and ventures through global cuisines on
our regular Food Safari culinary extravaganzas.
To continue nourishing and provoking artistic expansion, the CCP is brazen and
bolstered by initiatives such as the BEAMS Arts Festival, the Chippendale New
World Art Prize, the free monthly Explore Chippendale Gallery Walking Tours,
Chinese New Year celebrations and the annual Christmas Bazaar.
Thanks to steadfast support, the CCP is delighted to continue on our forwardthinking path of igniting inspiration in Sydney’s downtown, Destination
Chippendale, the creative heart of Sydney.

MOP Projects (Modes of Practice)
is an artist-run initiative (ARI) that
programs up to 35 exhibitions annually.
A volunteer committee curates MOP’s
programming based on an ever-growing
pool of proposals and initiatives
developed in-house. Since its inception
in 2003, MOP’s key programming
rationale has been to act as a career
springboard for young and emerging
artists. In recent years MOP has been
addressing the changing and growing
nature of ARIs by also supporting
mid-career artists who resist or do
not have the benefit of commercial
representation.

course, Lower Mekong’s menu

banh xeo (crispy pancake), and the
classic bowl of pho.

Q&A
What or who inspired you to start cooking?
I’d say a chef that I look up to: Grant Achatz. He has a
restaurant called Aline. I picked up his cookbook when
I was 14, and that was the whole reason why I started
cooking. I never knew food could look like that; I didn’t
know that’s how food could be presented.
Favourite food?
A good bowl of Pho. When I moved to Australia my dad
took me to a Pho shop here in the city (Pasture). That
was the first place I went to and ever since then i loved it.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What
colour would you be?
Yellow, because it’s my favourite colour and yellow makes
things bright.
If you could be any animal in the world?
Probably a dog. Not a care in the world.
Why Chippendale? What drew you here?
Initially, we were going to open up in Rosebery. But my
mum was walking around this area when it wasn’t really
opened up, and there was only Automata and the Old
Clare Hotel. She took me down here and I loved it. It was
something a bit homey, something different. I just love
the atmosphere and vibe here.
What do you love about our community
The variation of the food and the community. You have
choices from modern Australian to say native Australian,
Automata doing a bit of fusion with influences from Japan
for example. As well as Spice Alley with all its different
cuisine.

Tied to Tide, by Turpin + Crawford Studio
Q&A
Turpin + Crawford Studio is the
award-winning public art practice of
artists Jennifer Turpin and Michaelie
Crawford. Their work focuses on the
design and production of site-specific,
environmentally responsive, kinetic
artworks in the public domain.
What inspired you to create the halo?
Our kinetic artworks always seek to discover something of the character of
a place so that we can develop a work that is in dialogue with it. We seek to
connect to layers of social, cultural and environmental history and to reveal
aspects of invisible or taken for granted environmental energies. Halo turns and
tilts in response to the winds of the moment and its circular form is loosely
derived from the old brewery’s industrial equipment. The work draws focus
inwards to itself and gestures outwards to the park, buildings and streets
surrounding it.
Why Chippendale? What drew you here?
We’ve been here for about 15 years in a studio shared with other artists. We
love the building, its garden and the fantastic central location.
What excites you about our community?
Halo, by Jennifer Turpin and Michaelie Crawford
Its ongoing evolution. Chippendale is home and host to an interesting
community of residents, workers, students and visitors. In the last decade it has
transformed dramatically and fosters a welcoming and creative energy.
