Concert Series Releases Headliners for Concerts in the Park
This summer, Azusans are encouraged to spend a cool evening
listening to some of the best bands in and around the San Gabriel Valley
at the “Concerts in the Park” music series in Memorial Park. During the
last weeks in July and most of August, concertgoers can listen to a
different band play their favorite music every Thursday at Memorial
Park, 320 N. Orange in Azusa from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
There is no need to cook on concert nights either. An assortment of
food vendors will compete to temp your taste buds. Plenty of desserts
and soft drinks will also be on hand for you to purchase.
This year’s featured bands are:
Thursday, July, 19 — Mariachi Camino Real
MARIACHI CAMINO REAL has had the privilege of entertaining
audiences throughout California. They are in constant demand to
participate in a variety of parades and festivals throughout the San
Gabriel Valley. This group of young musicians has also performed along
side many famous and world-renowned mariachis. Their musical selections will invoke the beautiful and breathtaking culture and
traditions of Mexico.
Thursday, July 26 — Cold Duck
In 1969, trumpet player/vocalist Jose Cuadra assembled a group of musicians to form an eight-piece band known today as COLD
DUCK. Before long, Cold Duck was performing all over Southern California, establishing itself as the premier dance band of that period.
To this date, Cold Duck continues its tradition of excellent musicianship. They have enjoyed continued success with appearances from
San Diego to Santa Barbara, locations such as Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Magic Mountain, NBC, MGM and ABC Studios. With this
solid background, it should come as no surprise that Cold Duck is renowned for being one of the most versatile bands in the nation.
Thursday, August 2 — Ronny & The Classics
On August 2, the always popular RONNIE & THE CLASSICS will return for this month’s Concert in the Park. Full of energy and
excitement, this band plays classic tunes from the past six decades that will get you dancing.
Thursday, August 9 — The Wonderelles
Get ready to rock around the clock with THE WONDERELLES! A wholesome, high-energy, elegant 50s and 60s revue that will bring
you back to that era. Watching this 50’s & 60’s Girl Group perform in either poodle skirts or rolled-up jeans outfits, or blue or red 50’s style
cocktail dresses, you will find it hard to sit still in your seat. From “Johnny Angel” to “Mustang Sally”, from “Sugartime” to “Proud Mary”,
The Wonderelles give you a touch of nostalgia that will leave you with a smile on your face.
Thursday, August 16 — Stone Soul
STONE SOUL’s amazing live performances have thrilled hundreds of thousands of fans as they continue to spread Sweet Soul Music
throughout Southern California. Experience the best Oldies Classics, Soul and Motown music in the San Gabriel Valley on August 16 at
Concerts in the Park.
Thursday, August 23 — Wiseguys Big Band
From Swing to Swank, THE WISEGUYS big band machine is an eighteen-piece ensemble dedicated to keeping great music alive. This
big band features a screaming’ horn line, talented vocalists, exciting soloists, and a roaring’ rhythm section. Their repertoire includes the
swinging’ vocal tunes of Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin and Peggy Lee, big band favorites from Glenn Miller, Pérez Prado and Buddy Rich; and
The Wiseguys keep audiences on their feet and dancing with classic mambos and cumbias, and great dance music from the 50’s and 60’s.

UP, UP AND AWAY…
Metallic Balloons Can Cause Serious Power Outages
Those bright shiny helium filled metallic balloons so popular at celebrations are also leaving more and more
people in the dark when they become entangled in overhead power lines. Azusa Light Water is cautioning
consumers that those same balloons can cause power outages if not handled properly.
“We want to acknowledge the sentiments these balloons convey, while at the same time let people
know about the inconveniences they can cause if should be released,” says Azusa Light & Water Utilities
Director, George Morrow.
Azusa recently experienced a power outage, which affected about a thousand customers in a sizeable
portion of Azusa. Service was restored within a couple of hours following repairs. The cause of the
problem was a metallic balloon that blew into the high voltage lines causing the momentary interruptions
in service.
Metallic balloons, which are also called Mylar balloons, are hazardous it they become entangled in high
power lines because they have a metallic coating which can caused power lines to short-out and burn down. Helium
filled Latex balloons can also damage power lines if shinny Mylar string is attached to them.
Power outages may result in inoperable traffic lights and loss power to home bound persons on life support medical
equipment.
California law, in fact, prohibits the sale of Mylar balloon clusters because of major outages they caused in the 1990s.
“As a reminder, should a balloon, Mylar or otherwise, get caught in the overhead wires — never attempt to
retrieve it yourself,” says Morrow. “Power lines are very dangerous and can cause serious injury.”

La Serie de Conciertos Presenta sus Titulares Musicales para los Conciertos en el Parque
Este verano, los miembros de la comunidad de Azusa de nuevo son invitados
a pasar una tarde fresca escuchando a algunas de las mejores bandas musicales
en el Valle de San Gabriel durante la serie musical “Conciertos en el Parque” en
el Memorial Park. Durante las últimas semanas de julio y casi todo el mes de
Agosto las personas que asistan a los conciertos disfrutarán escuchando a
diferentes bandas musicales tocando su música favorita cada Jueves en el Parque
Memorial, 320 N. Orange in Azusa de las 7:00 P.M. a las 9:00 P.M.
Tampoco no va a tener que cocinar en las noches de concierto porque habrá una
gran variedad de vendedores de comida que competirán para deleitar su paladar.
También estarán a la venta una muy deliciosa variedad de postres y sodas.

Jueves, 19 de Julio—Mariachi Camino Real
El MARIACHI CAMINO REAL ha tenido el privilegio de deleitar a sus
fanáticos a través de California. Esta banda es muy solicitada para participar en
una gran variedad de desfiles y festivales en todo el Valle de San Gabriel. Este
grupo de músicos jóvenes también ha compartido el escenario con muchos
mariachis famosos y reconocidos por todo el mundo. Sus selecciones musicales
invocarán la cultura y tradiciones hermosas e impresionantes de México.
Jueves, 26 de julio—Cold Duck

ARRIBA, ARRIBA Y ADELANTE…
Los Globos Metálicos Pueden Causar Serios Cortes de Energía
Esos brillantes y relucientes globos metálicos llenos de helio tan populares en las fiestas también están dejando a más y más
personas en la oscuridad cuándo se enredan en los cables eléctricos aéreos. El Departamento de Agua y Energía de Azusa les está
advirtiendo a sus consumidores que esos mismos globos pueden causar cortes de energía si no son manejados
adecuadamente.
“Queremos reconocer los sentimientos expresados a través de estos globos, mientras que a la vez queremos
informarle a las personas sobre las inconveniencias que estos pueden causar si se sueltan al aire libre,” dice el
Director de Servicios Públicos del Departamento de Agua y Energía de Azusa, George Morrow.
Recientemente Azusa experimentó un corte de energía el cual afectó como a mil consumidores abarcando una
gran parte de Azusa. Los servicios de energía fueron restablecidos en unas cuantas horas después de haber sido
reparados. La causa del problema fue debido a un globo metálico que voló hacia un cable de alto voltaje lo cual causó
una interrupción momentánea en el servicio.
Los globos metálicos, los cuales también son conocidos como globos Mylar, son peligrosos si se enredan en cables
de alto voltaje porque contiene una capa metálica que puede causar un cortocircuito en los cables de energía e incendiarse. Los
globos látex llenos de helio también pueden dañar
los cables de energía si el hilo brilloso de Mylar está amarrado a estos.
Los cortes de energía pudieron ser la causa de que los semáforos de luz no funcionaran y que ocurriera una pérdida de energía a los hogares con
personas confinadas en casa quienes requieren equipo médico de soporte vital.
La ley de California, por hecho, prohíbe la venta de racimos de globos Mylar debido a cortes de energía muy graves que estos causaron
en los años de 1990.
“Como recordatorio, si un globo Mylar o alguno de otro tipo, se enreda en los cables eléctricos aéreos—- nunca trate de desenrollarlos
usted mismo,” dice Morrow. “Los cables de energía son muy peligrosos y podrían causar lesiones serias.”
