April 2016
Words from the Pastor
I always look forward to spring, with the return of green leaves and grass, flowers, and newly born wildlife. I look
forward to planting and caring for the garden, spring Rock fish season, the return of crabs to the Bay and rivers. I look
forward to warm evenings with extended daylight that we may sit outside and enjoy nature and neighbors-two legged and
otherwise. All of these point to new birth, new creation, new life, renewal of hope and reconnecting with God’s creation and
one another. For me, these activities and sightings in nature remind me of the resurrected Lord and God’s continued activity
in the world around us. Evidence of God’s love comes alive for me in the signs of spring.
Smells of newness after April showers and signs of new life are abundant everywhere, making the hardship of
returning, but temporary allergies worthwhile, because even this evidence of new life reminds me in Psalm 30:5 (NIV) 5 For
his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the
morning. As in our experience of the season of spring, the resurrection of Jesus promises us new hope and new life, but in
eternal renewal rather than seasonal change. Life gets an opportunity at a brand new start made possible in the death and
resurrection of our savior. Washed in the blood of Jesus, we are forgiven, given a new slate to begin renewed, refreshed,
re-invigorated with new life, like my garden spaces only better!
In all these ways, the season after Easter reconnects us one to the other and to God through the resurrected Lord Jesus
Christ. During this post Easter season, we explore the many proofs of the resurrected Jesus and the living God all around us in
nature and also in historical scripture told by the witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection appearances. While for me the spring season
reminds me of the evidence of Jesus’ resurrection, many in the first century and in the time since have cried out for more
tangible eye-witness proof of the resurrection. I believe the best evidence is always in our personal faithful witness with our
whole lives as testimony to the risen Lord through our speech, actions and most importantly outward love to all that Jesus
loves, which of course is all people everywhere in every circumstance (even those we dislike personally or with whom we
disagree…).
For those who prefer eyewitness accounts to the Risen Lord from the first century, I thought I would include this list
of New Testament post resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ:
1. To Mary Magdalene (John 20:11-18; Mark 16:9-11)
2. To women returning from the tomb (Matthew 28:8-10)
3. To Cleopas and a friend on the Emmaus Road (Mark 16:12; Luke 24:13-35)
4. To Peter (1 Corinthians 15:5)
5. To ten disciples in Jerusalem (John 20:19-25; Luke 24:36-49, Acts 1:3-5)
6. To eleven disciples (John 20:26-31; 1 Corinthians 15:5
7. To seven disciples in Galilee (John 21:1-25)
8. To the apostles and more than five hundred brethren (Matthew 28:16-20; 1 Corinthians 15:6)
9. To James (1 Corinthians 15:7)
10. To the Apostles on the Mount of Olives (Acts 1:6-12; 1 Corinthians 15:7)
11. To Stephen at his stoning (Acts 7:55-60)
12. To Paul at his conversion (Acts 9:3-8, 17; 22:6-15; 26:12-19; 1 Corinthians 9:1; 15:8)
13. To Paul at Corinth (Acts 18:9-10)
14. To Paul in the temple (Acts 22:17-21)
15. To Paul later in Jerusalem (Acts 23:11)
16. To Paul in another vision (2 Corinthians 12:1-4)
17. To John on Patmos (Revelation 1)
The Gospel of John: Believe and Live, by Elmer Towns. Chattanooga: AMG Publishers, 2002. p. 203.
Enjoy, and Happy Resurrection! May you be surrounded by the signs of spring, and may your life reflect the resurrection of
Christ in all you are and do!
- Pastor Walter

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
St Paul UMC will observe the 65th annual National Day of Prayer on
May 5, 2016. Our prayers will have profound significance for our
country. It is an significant opportunity to see the Lord’s healing and
renewing power made manifest as we call on citizens to humbly come
before His throne.
The NDP theme for 2016 is Wake Up America, emphasizing the need
for individuals, corporately and individually, to return to the God in
reverence for His Holy Name. To further highlight our theme, we’ve
chosen Isaiah 58:1a as our Scripture for this year: “Shout it aloud, do
not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.”
Please mark your calendars as we join together to pray for our country
and the world at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Showalter Place,” (2060 Briansway in Lusby) or in The Zone during the school year to chill/
decompress/eat/play/”go with no agenda” and is open to all students in grades 9-12!! (We won’t
meet the first Thursday of April 2016 due to St. Paul Church Council meeting on that Thursdays…
still leaves us plenty of GREAT Senior High Life Gatherings!!
UMYF/UPRISING
Our first two Uprising Uth! gatherings in March (March 5 and 12)
were focused on continuing our exploration of how our heritage and
ethnicities input into who we are because of Who Jesus is by utilizing a
great find by Uprising Uth! Advisor Miss Carol (Harvat). “The find”
was a CNN documentary called “The 60’s,” in which one set of
documentary segments covered the civil rights movement seen through
the lens of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s non-violent approach to civil
disobedience. We viewed the segments of “The Long March To
Freedom” in “stop-and-go” fashion, pausing after each to reflect on our
feelings about what we just watched and with the thought that “to do
our best to love our neighbor as ourselves, we must understand our
neighbor’s history.” Segments included Nashville // The Freedom
Rides // Ole Miss // Bull Connor & Birmingham // “As Old as the
Scriptures, as Clear as the Constitution” // March on Washington.”
Many of us were stunned by the cruelty perpetrated upon our fellow
human beings fueled by prejudice and bigotry, by the hope shown by
those who risked their lives to love their neighbors regardless of
ethnicity, by the confidence we can have to ensure we value every
other person if we follow Jesus’s teaching, and by the sheer volume of
what we learned in several short but intense hours of watching and
discussing our nation’s history in this area. We pray this experience
fuels our compassion toward others and our empathy what each of us
endure as we continue to strive to love God, love our neighbors, and to
trust Jesus with our every next step each and every moment.
On Saturday, April 19th, part of our group traveled to “Flight”
Trampoline Park in Alexandria, VA. Though several of us had been to
trampoline parks in the past, many of us were “rookies” to the
experience. We found that while trampoline “floors” help in some
ways to defy gravity, the line from the Tom Petty and the
Heartbreaker’s song “Learning To Fly” holds true: “I’m learning to
fly, but I ain’t got wings…coming down…is the hardest thing.” As
you might guess, this gathering had a completely “fellowship” focus as
we had fun with one another not only at the park but on the trip there
and back.
During the Good Friday/Easter holiday weekend, many of our Uprising
Uth! took part in “The Passion of Christ” outdoor drama. Additional
Uprising Uth! stepped forward to fill in needs when Dr. Andy called
for tech support and stage hands. One audience member was
overheard saying, “I had no idea how many students would be part of
this!” We praise God for the opportunity to be part of this “big
church” effort and event to reach our community and help others see
the joy in “trusting Jesus for our every next step!”
Youth Ministry “Praise God’s”.....
“…so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of
God but our lives as well.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8
Praise God for our Uprising Youth who consistently live your faith in your homes, neighborhoods, on your school
campuses, and to all the places and peers where and to whom God takes you!! God help us to take Your “Uprising”
of love to all the people in all the places You lead us as we continue on Your 2016 journey for each of us, especially
on our campuses and among all those we meet who don’t know of Your love! May we be Your “Trust Jesus for
Every Next Step” love to others in ways that encourage them to also trust You as we strive to “Change The World!”
for Your glory! Continued blessings on all our students and your school work, activities, and extra-curriculars!!
Praise God for our incredible school teachers, administrators, and staff who continue to live lives of faith within our
school systems and provide such worthy examples to our students! You continue to have the prayers of your St.
Paul Family as you guide our young people “down the back stretch” of your school year! All God’s Very Best and
Abundant Blessings upon your work and ministries among our students!” Praise God for Each of U!!
Praise God for all our Uprising Uth! who were such a powerfully inherent part of “The Passion of Christ” Outdoor
Worship Experience cast and crew! And for the adults who recruited them and accepted them and journeyed with
them through the entire performance preparations and presentation. It seems nearly unnecessary to even acknowledge this, which is surely a tribute to the “adoptive love” and family-approach to “being Jesus’s church” and
“trusting Jesus for our every next step” across the generations! Praise God for such an accepting and powerful
group who presented a powerful display of Jesus’s love for and to our community!
Praise God for all our wonderful families…who are living lives of thankful active discipleship…and make up our St.
Paul Family of Faith. Blessings on your journeys of faith with your children and young people and thanks to God
and you all for allowing the rest of our St. Paul family to share this journey of faith as we all live under God’s
adoptive love for all people!
Praise God for all of you who continue to nurture our children and youth into LIFELONG discipleship through
teaching Sunday School in the past and present as you continue to “step up and step in” to teach our children!
Blessings upon you, both our “new” teachers, our “veterans” who have taught for years and our dear substitutes on
any given Sunday morning as you make sure our Sunday school students see, hear, feel and learn of God’s love for
them each Sunday through your teaching and actions!
Praise Be To God the Father, our Risen and Living Lord and Saviour Jesus, and our Guide and Counselor the Holy
Spirit for helping us to be a Christ-centered church family that offers H.O.P.E. by responding to God’s love and
grace as Christian disciples!
Awesome teenagers, Awesome adults, Awesome God!
“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of
your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work
in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Merger Haiti Mission
Clothesline Fundraiser
June 16-24, 2016
Each team member must raise $1,400 for airfare, ground transportation,
lodging, food, insurance, and translators. We need to raise money for
some of the other on-going projects, including, but not limited to, the
following:
1. Primary focus is working with the school and children $600
2. A pastors’ seminar for two days $1600
3. A Saturday trip to Valla with medical clinic $2000
4. Balance of funds raised will go toward the cistern issues – finish
new and repair current, cracked cistern. Funds raised will be used for
materials, laborers, and equipment.
How does the Clothesline Fundraiser work?
Envelopes are numbered 1 to 200. Each number represents the dollar
amount pledged from whomever takes that envelope. For example, if
one person takes the envelope marked #50, the donator will enclose a
minimum amount of $50 (cash or check) in the envelope and drop it off
in the office; or, in the donation plate on Sunday. (Please write checks
to St. Paul’s UMC and write “Haiti” in note.) We also ask that you do
this in addition to your normal tithe (not in place of). Of course, you
may donate any amount at any time, simply grab a regular envelope and
note “Haiti” on the envelope. All donations will be used for supplies or
spent in Haiti unless specifically designated for a team member’s travel
costs.
The Clothesline for the Haiti Mission is hanging in the activity center
hallway. Please donate as able and thank you for your generosity. All
donations should be received by June 1, 2016.
NOTE: Come to the May Fellowship dinner, as the team will be providing local Haitian food favorites. All proceeds will benefit the Haiti
Mission.
If you are interested in going to Haiti or have questions, please
contact Beth Rogers [email protected] or Dave Turner
[email protected] or [email protected].
Vacation Bible School
July 25-29, 2016
Our theme this upcoming summer is Cave Quest ‘Following
Jesus the Light of the World’. Scott and Tiffany Kanny will
lead vacation bible school. If you would like to help out or
have any questions please contact them at
[email protected] or [email protected].
Dear St. Paul family,
I wanted to let you know of a change that the Finance
Committee is implementing. From now on, we will be
sending out giving statements once a year instead of
quarterly. This will save quite a bit of money (on postage,
paper, envelopes, address labels, and toner) and the
significant amount of time spent preparing and mailing
them out. If at any time throughout the year you’d like a
current statement, please don’t hesitate to contact me by
email ([email protected]) or by phone/text (757-256-3810)
and I’ll be happy to print one out for you.
Thank you,
Sue Carver, Finance Secretary
