President’s Message
Greetings Members
In an effort to make the board’s work as transparent as
possible I have decided to continue to address issues that
were raised at the 2012 AWC Annual Meeting held in April.
A member has filed charges against another member
for conduct surrounding the 2011 National Specialty in
Lexington, Kentucky. The AWC Board of Directors will
entertain jurisdiction in this matter and has set a hearing
date for the beginning of August.
The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the
acceptance of our By-Laws changes by AKC. This has
been a long undertaking and I would like to thank past
President Russell McFadden for his work on this project.
published in the June Whippet News. Thank you Sharyn
and Christine Hopperstad for keeping the membership
informed of these important issues.
Please welcome new members Rosemarie Crandahl and
Nancy Jorczak.
For all of the Western members, enjoy your specialty at the
end of this month! Our AWC Specialties are indeed special.
Safe travels,
David
More good news, Wendy Clark is on the verge of
releasing the next issue of the Annual. The Whippet
world anxiously awaits the arrival of the Annual every
year. As soon as it comes, pull up your comfy chair, put
your Whippets on your lap and pore through the pages
drinking in all the beautiful ads and interesting information.
I know that is where I will be. On behalf of the Whippet
community I thank Wendy for her countless hours of work
on this project every year.
Our Legislative Liaison, Sharyn Hutchens, is on top of
legislative issues and has made certain the American
Whippet Club is listed on the opposition list for the new
USDA/APHIS regulations. The proposed regulations were
Editor’s Notes
Dear Readers,
Be sure to admire the 7-page memorial honoring
Rush and Smooth, followed by additional ad pages,
showcasing their descendants. Also, check out the
articles from our notable writer Bo Bengtson. Next
month will include his specialty report from the AKC
results publication.
Here in my house today the dogs’ concerns center on
the weather outside and whether they should really be
expected to go out to relieve themselves when it means
they’ll get wet and maybe a little chilled. And then
there’s the pesky electrical storm that’s been startling
all of us with rumbling and and flashing lights. In typical
canine ways, they try to avoid whatever will make them
uncomfortable and do their best to disappear so they
don’t have to go out in the rain or have their nails done
or get in a crate or whatever.
Just everyday dog concerns, nothing like the tragic
news from Colorado about the almost impossible to
imagine event. What a world we humans live in.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) new proposed
regulations which would create harsh and unintended
consequences for responsible small and hobby breeders in
this country. According to the AKC, “Under the proposed
regulations, breeders or others who sell a puppy sight
unseen, by any means including online, by mail or by
telephone, would now be regulated in accordance with
USDA standards, if you own more than four “breeding
females” of any of the listed species, including dogs and
cats. The effect of these proposed regulations would be to
take away the public’s opportunity to obtain puppies from
those breeders, who in many cases have dedicated their
lives to breeding for health, breed type and temperament.”
The Sportsmen’s & Animal Owners’ Voting Alliance
has compiled an exhaustive list of all of those clubs and
organizations which oppose the proposed regulations. Its

SOUTH CENTRAL
Discussion has been ongoing about moving the South
Central regional specialty. The size of entries in Oklahoma
City has been a concern and it’s extremely hot in July with
not much area to walk dogs. I asked Kathy Rasmussen,
the chair for the South Central, to poll the members in her
region about where they would like to see the specialty
and hopefully boost entries.
Kathy did send a message and the response was
overwhelming to move it to Tulsa over the Memorial
weekend which includes lure coursing and a great building
with lots of area to walk dogs.
Per the wish of the members in the region, the South
Central will move to Tulsa in 2013 with the possibility
of regular entries in the morning and a specialty in the
afternoon. She is putting together a ballot and those
members will have a chance to vote on the judges for 2013.

IT’S COMING!
All things being equal – we don’t melt into a puddle of goo,
the power doesn’t go off again, the printer is on time, and
we have luck with the bindery schedule... then the Annual
is due to mail near the end of July. It’s been a rough year
and I very much appreciate your patience. Really Really.
I think this Annual will be worth the wait. Really Really.
Anybody who did not have their SNAIL MAIL address current
with either the AWC or Whippet News had better contact me
really really soon or your Annual will be blowing in the wind.
Thank you!

AWC Whippet News Annual
My turn, my turn...
About five years ago I had a bout with temporary insanity.
I started thinking about chairing the AWC National. In
December of 2009, the crisis peaked and I actually put in
a bid for the 2012 AWC National. Figured, what the ****,
the first one was in Ohio, and it seemed appropriate that
the 25th anniversary should also be in Ohio. The very first
national was held on April 18, 1987 and through no planning
whatsoever, the fates decreed that our regular classes
would begin on April 18, 2012, exactly 25 years later.
Fortunately for all concerned my committee heads turned
out to be worth their weight in gold as the saying goes. IF
only I had the gold... Way too many to individually thank
here, but you all know who you are.
There are a few people without whom this national would
never have happened.
Cindy, who had enough faith in me (or who was suffering
her own bout with insanity) to agree to let me run with this.
Who also listened to me whine, and laughed at me when
one of my infamous spreadsheets was out of balance.
Kaleena, my wonderful daughter, whom I coerced into being
the onsite show secretary. Kaleena wound up doing her job
and a great portion of mine. There are no words to tell you
how proud I am of her. Also to Jason, her SO, who took off
the whole week to stay with the kids. I owe both of them…
But, Kaleena -- I still refuse to babysit. Love ya, sweetie.
Karen Rockwell, friend and travel companion. She and
Kaleena vacillated between wanting to tear my hair out and
outright murder, but were always supportive.
Mary Alderman, who *volunteered* to do hospitality. If
you haven’t read her account in the May Newsletter, you’ve
missed a great story.
Then, on March 2nd, while doing a spot of B & E, I tore my
ankle apart. Fortunately everything was already in place and
kept rolling along, with only a bit of scrambling. I rented a
scooter, as I wasn’t yet allowed to put weight on my leg.
They stuck me in the registration room and told me to
deal with catalogs, goodie bags and questions, so I didn’t
actually see much of the national. Thank you to everyone
who stopped by to chat and stayed to help. I guess I looked
pretty pitiful, hopping around on crutches.
So I’ve relied on the reports/remarks of others to know
what happened. From all accounts I’ve heard, it was a hit.
Knowing what a great supporter of the AWC Pat Dresser
has always been and that she chaired the first one back
in 1987, I decided to put her on the spot this year. With
help from Cathy Gaidos and a bunch of her friends we held
a “Pat Dresser Roast” on Tuesday evening. What a hit.
Followed closely by what seems to have been the best
Whippet Idol contest to date.
I promised Cindy that we would make money. I sent her
so many spreadsheets that she got sick of looking at them.
We did make money. Not as much as I would have liked.
The difference between the $4000 that we did make and
the $7600 that we should have made was SIXTEEN ROOM
NIGHTS AT THE HOST HOTEL. Not making 80% of our
contract cost us $3600.
Folks I know that sometimes there just isn’t enough cash to
do all the things we want to do, but if at all possible, please
choose to stay at the host hotel. It does make a difference.
Also, waiting until the last minute to cancel that double
booking or to choose to go elsewhere makes it difficult to
keep up with the room nights. For example a week and
a half prior to this year’s nat’l we had 967 room nights
reserved. We wound up using 704.
OK, enough negativity, it was a great week, enjoyed by all.
I haven’t done the breakdown of net income/loss by type
so have asked Cindy’s permission to have the actual check
book register printed here. If anyone has any questions,
please don’t hesitate to contact me.

The WRAP Report
Hanging On For Love: Snoopy’s Story
Beautiful, loyal Snoopy had a loving, caring guardian; her life was
just about perfect. She had lived her entire life with an owner that
doted on her. Then suddenly, Snoopy’s life was horribly changed. Her
elderly owner was placed in a nursing home; ‘temporarily’ is what
they said. And she didn’t want to relinquish her pet, because she felt
strongly she would be coming home. A month went by. Snoopy was
spending her time in a small fenced area with a covered shed for
protection from the elements. Another month went by. Every day, a
neighbor would visit, give Snoopy food and water, pat her on the head
and reassure her that her momma was coming home soon. Another
month went by and yet another. Snoopy became depressed and
barely ate. Another month passed.
After seven long months, everyone
faced the hard truth that the guardian
was not coming home. Snoopy was
released to Rescued Paws (a nonprofit all breed rescue) in Washington
state. Snoopy arrived in horrible
condition, weighing less than 20
pounds. The goal for Snoopy was
to make her comfortable as weight
was gradually added to her bony
frame. She did not want to eat, except when she was hand-fed; perhaps
enjoying the physical closeness from this added attention. Snoopy
was provided with pain meds, anti-inflammatory relief and probiotics.
Keeping this frail dog comfortable was the main goal — her bony frame
requiring additional padding on her bed. The level of pain was controlled,
but knowing as it becomes worse, she would let us know when ‘it’s
time.’ This gentle soul will not suffer. And hopefully, if Snoopy put on
some weight, the quality of her life will be extended. Snoopy loved the
attention and that’s what kept her foster mom and dad going — knowing
a difference was being made in this dog’s remaining months. Shelly, the
foster mom, talked to Snoopy’s original vet. They knew Snoopy well.
She was adored by her person and they think she came from a breeder
(unknown). Snoop Dog was 12 plus years old; always being on the frail
side. Aside from a heart murmur, Snoopy apparently did not have any
serious issues when they last saw her.
Upon learning of Snoopy’s dilemma, WRAP President, Dr. Barbara
Henderson consulted with the treating vet to learn of Snoopy’s
prognosis and condition (malnourished and arthritic). Snoopy had
several blood profiles done. The tests showed an elevated BUN and
a urinary tract infection (UTI). Her CBC was normal. Abdominal X-rays
were negative. She was treated for the UTI and initially placed on a
kidney diet. With a proper diet, antibiotics and loving care, her BUN
would hopefully come down. Periodic blood testing was done to
evaluate progress. She continued to gain weight, but was incontinent.
The foster Mom loving said this is not a problem in regard to Snoopy’s
care. WRAP assumed responsibility for Snoopy’s medical care
with aid from “The Brigitte Greenberg Fund” (for senior Whippets).
Snoopy remained with the Rescued Paws’ foster parents, as Barbara
continued to communicate with the foster parents and the treating
vet. Shelly recently commented, “Snoop Dog (as Shelly lovingly calls
her) interacts well with the other dogs. She gets up and goes outside
for awhile to check everyone out, primarily the other dogs and the
miniature horses and goats and then heads back inside for a nap.

July 2012
By Lori Rose & Georgia Butterfield
She is comfortable here. My husband
said she ate four times today.” Ted often
scrambled eggs for Snoopy when she did
not want to eat. She loved that!
Snoopy developed decubitus ulcers
(bedsores) on her bony bottom that were
not healing. Shelly took her back to the
vet. The vet felt like it was an old wound
(possibly resulting from seven long
months in the shed and poor nutrition?)
The vet cut back all the old dead skin
to find a deep wound. Snoopy was
prescribed a heavy duty antibiotic and cleansing twice a day. The
good news was Snoopy had gained 4 lbs since her first visit to the
vet. But sadly, on the evening of Friday the 13th, Snoopy suddenly
passed away. She had a good day and then she peacefully slipped
away. Shelly says “She was doing so well. Ted and I were the lucky
ones to have taken care of her. Ted is really heartbroken as he was
the one to sit with her while she ate, making sure she got enough
and away from the other dogs. Ted and I still hurt and will for some
time. Sometimes there is heartbreak in the things we do out of love.
We are so very sad. She will be missed.” Surely, Snoopy knew she
was loved once again…
Shelly and Ted are impressed with the outpouring love from the
Whippet community. Shelly comments, “I am very touched by the
emails. Other foster dogs pass on and nobody cared but me.” She
is grateful for the financial support of Snoopy’s medical care as the
contribution helps Rescued Paws continue their loving work.

in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
Remembering Rush
I remember being fascinated by Rush at the aWC national specialty in 1998, where he was WD at 15 months of age,
and in the following years he helped cement the Chelsea influence on the breed — by his ability to consistently produce
wonderful children. I remember once stacking him on our dining room table in Santa Barbara and feeling he could
unquestionably have a great specials career, but Deann wisely focused on his children instead.
and what children there were… It was when Mary Dukes judged the aWC futurity in 1999 that the Whippet world really
took notice of Rush as a stud dog. Mary had not been involved in Chelsea dogs at that point, and the fact that she
picked out Rush kids in practically every class made big news. for seven years Rush and his sons shared the no. 1 Sire
spot in the aWC tabulations. his daughter Ch. Chelsea Dangerous Beauty (“emma”), sired when Rush was just over
a year old, convinced me I had to breed to this dog. emma’s litter brother “Redford” (Ch. Chelsea Made you look of
Sage) won even more at all-breed shows, and carried the Rush blood into even more kennels, but it was always emma
who really did it for me: so much her father’s daughter, as beautiful as he was, and as strong-willed, too! later on came
Ch. Snowcap Wildcard Goodfellow on the east Coast and my particular favorite Rush son, Ch. Chelsea long Kiss
Goodnight (“Davis”), whose international show career stretched from South africa to South america and the u.S.
there have been very few truly great stud dogs in our breed. Rush unquestionably is one of the great ones,
and his name will be remembered with affection as long as there are Whippets.
Bo Bengtson
Remembering Rush
there is so much I remember about Rush. the first time I saw him, trotting around the yard as a baby puppy,
he was so impressive and such a standout not only for his pretty face but for his smoothness and effortless
movement and carriage. once he entered the show ring he continued to impress, finishing his championship
with three 5-point specialty majors including Winner’s Dog at the national Specialty. he caught the eye of many
Whippet breeders worldwide and went on to sire not only Deann’s wonderful Davis, or littermates Redford and
emma but also top-winning dogs for several other kennels including a national Specialty Best of Breed winner.
Rush also took his talents and enthusiasm to the coursing field. he easily completed his aKC and aSfa field
Championship going Best In field along the way. he put his heart and soul into all that he did.
after retirement he was content in his role as official-chief greeter in the Chelsea household. I fondly remember
him bounding into the living room, flying through the air to perch on his spot on the back of the couch where he
would be the first to receive the attention. that welcoming, handsome face will never be forgotten. he lived a
long and happy life. he was loved every day as the member of the household that he was and his presence is
greatly missed.

Looking Back...
by Bo Bengtson and Dee Laurie-Beaumont
Am. Can. Ch. Leatty Court Marshall
While judging in Canada I spoke to Dee Laurie-Beaumont, whose late
mother Audrey Benbow bred the famous Sirhan Borzoi but also some
Whippets. Dee mentioned that she long ago had owned an English
import who was one of the top U.S. Whippet winners of the 1960s,
Am. Can. Ch. Leatty Court Marshall.
By coincidence, at around the same time I received an email from
another Borzoi person, Lisa Durand, who offered to donate two
photos of Court Marshall to the AWC archives. They are over-size,
high quality black & white prints, and turned out to be the same photo
of Court Marshall, although one of them also included a bitch who
had been retouched out of the other photo. I sent the picture of Court
Marshall alone to Dee in Canada, while the photo of the two dogs has
been added to the AWC archives and is reproduced here.
The bitch in the photo is identified as Ch. Humble Acres Slo Gin, who
was of Whipoo, Stoney Meadows and Meander breeding. Like Court
Marshall, she was owned by Hugh and Anna Ungerleider, better
known for their Borzoi at that time. Slo Gin was the dam of several
AKC champions by Court Marshall: Ch. Briarwyn’s Black Ide Susan,
Ch. Gretchenhof Sea Witch, and Ch. Windy Hills I Lyca The Rain — all
litter mates in spite of different kennel names. Some of them may be
found far back in old pedigrees.
Am. & Can. Ch. Leatty Court Marshall, Sept. 1966 - Dec.1974 (Ch. Samarkand’s
Sun Courtier x Hillgarth Spring Star) Breeder: J. H. Hallas, UK.
Court Marshall’s breeder was not famous in Whippets. The Leatty
prefix comes from the British all-rounder judge George Leatt, who
probably found the dog as a youngster in England, bought him, and
then sold him to the U.S. after adding his prefix to the registered
name. This was common practice in those days. Mr. Leatt’s own
breed was Border Terriers, but he was a good Whippet judge and had
a real interest in the breed.
“Rusty” was imported and shown exclusively in the U.S. by Anna
Ungerleider. At just under 14 months old, he achieved his Am. Ch.
title in two weekends with one 3-point major and three 5-point
majors, winning the Group all four days from the open class. Even
though he continued to be shown into 1970, I believe he was top
Whippet in the U.S. in 1968. In that year he was shown 34 times, of
which he placed in the group all but 5 times (7 BIS; 18 G1; 10 G2; 6
G3; 1 G4). He earned two more BIS in his career.
Court Marshall’s sire, Ch. Samarkand’s Sun Courtier, was a son of the
famous Ch. Samarkand’s Greenbrae Tarragon. Since Tarragon was
blood brother to the later imports Ch. Greenbrae Barn Dance and Ch.
Coveydown Greenbrae Wayfarer, both hugely influential sires, the
opportunity for some interesting line-breeding to Court Marshall were
there, but this never materialized.
When Anna died, my mother Audrey Benbow contacted Hugh
Ungerleider to see if Rusty was available. The estate value was very
high, but her interest was noted. Mr. Ungerleider realized that Rusty was
very much a lady’s dog and in 1972 offered Rusty to me, as a university
student, and his son out of Ch. Humble Acres Slo Gin to my mother.
Incidentally, Court Marshall is often listed as an English Champion in
some publications. That is incorrect; as far as is known he was never
shown in his native country. This is borne out by Dee’s comments
below: since the dog was an AKC champion by 14 months of age he
cannot have had an extensive show career, if any, in Great Britain.
Bo Bengtson
Rusty was shown to his Canadian title in one weekend, winning a
Group over my mother’s Borzoi Am.& Can. Sirhan Porchai, who was
top Hound that year!
I am sure that Rusty’s appeal was that he was a sleek, sound,
ground-covering, moderate Whippet. He had a predominantly
white head with dark pigment and perfect ears. The only negative
comment I ever heard was that he had a high neck-set, an opinion
that stemmed from advertising with this photo. In reality his neck was
fine. He just had great attitude.
As far as progeny, there is little left. We finished the son that Hugh
sent to us, but we never bred him and I do not know anything about
his littermates. We only had the opportunity to breed Rusty twice.
We got some beautiful pups The ones we kept finished, but most
went to pet homes because that was the market.

News From Great Britain
It’s not a bad idea for us in the U.S. to know something
about what’s happening in our breed’s motherland. These
days there’s probably more American influence on British
Whippets than the reverse, but all Whippets go back to
English imports, even though they are now pretty far back
in most U.S. pedigrees.
Yvonne Hull, who together with her husband Michael
Howgate breeds the Palmik Whippets in Devonshire, sends
regular updates from British championship shows, most of
which have much bigger entries than ours. It would carry
too far to print all the results, but following is a quick survey
of what we would call their specialties; they are usually
called “breed club championship shows” in the UK.
First a primer in British dog shows. There are only two
dozen all-breed championship shows and nine or ten breed
club shows where Challenge Certificates (CCs) are offered
per year. Three CCs make a dog a champion over there, but
since entries are high and champions continue to compete
for the CCs throughout their career it’s obviously very
difficult to make up a champion in Great Britain; usually
there’s only a handful of new titlists per year. There’s also
a Show Certificate of Merit title that’s easier to win and is
placed after the name (ShCM), and a Junior Warrant (JW)
is awarded to especially successful youngsters.
In June there was the Whippet Club of Scotland, where
judge Tracey Hoare awarded dog CC and BIS to Collooney
Tricky Dicky JW ShCM (Falconcrag Goldsmith at Collooney
x Stonefox Trinity), a nearly solid brindle who is owned
(and shown, I believe) by 14-year old Luke Johnston and
bred by Viv Coulter. (Luke has already won BOB at Crufts
with a Saluki; he’s probably the youngest handler to go so
high at this show.) Reserve CC went to the Best Veteran in
Show, Ch. Railfield Raindust (Ch. Oakbark Millennium Gold
x Railfield Raindrop), with bitch CC and Res. BIS going to
another brindle, Raindust’s half sister Elmanash Spanish
Gold (Ch. Oakbark Millennium Gold x Elmanash Elvira). The
Res. CC went to Ch. Triken Timeless Star JW (Wrenella Just
Giles at Triken ShCM x Ch. Timeless Echo at Triken), and
Best Puppy was Johnston & Jessie McLeod’s homebred
Peperone Passion Play (Edengrove Red Rock at Peperone
x Peperone Pieris).
The Joint Whippet Clubs championship show was this year
hosted by the Midland Whippet Club in Rugby on June 24.
There was an entry of 244 Whippets. Dogs were judged by
Leigh Morris (Crosscop), bitches by Kevan Ellis (Railfield),
with Anne Defaye as referee, in case the dog and bitch judges
would not agree about BOB, as happened on this occasion.
Dog CC and BIS in the end went to Shalfleet Simply A Lord
(Shalfleet Simply Jazz x Shalfleet Song of Dreams), who has
Canadian Lorricbrook breeding in his pedigree and several

lines to Ch. Sportingfield’s Jazz Fest). Lord is owned and
bred by Jane Wilton-Clark, whose mother started the famous
Shalfleet kennels in the early 1960s and bred countless
Greyhound and Whippet champions. Lord is red brindle &
white and became a champion shortly after this show. The
Res. CC winning dog was also Res. BIS, Ch. Ardencote What
A Cracker (Ch. Nevedith Kfa Kraka x Ardencote Diamond
Lil), with the bitch CC again going to Elmanash Spanish Gold
(see above), and Res. CC to Birkonbrae Tam O’Shanter (Ch.
Spinneyhill Rainmaker of Railfield x Birkonbrae A Bit Special).
Best Puppy was Palmik Magic Trick (Ir. Ch. Collooney Move
On Over x Ch. Palmik Magical Whispers JW) and Best
Veteran the white U.S. import Ch. Sportingfield Winged
Dove over Dumbriton (Am. Ch. Wenricks Man About Town
x Ch. Summit Brocade D Lang).
One of the few all-breed shows that rivals Crufts for
reputation (and beats it for glamour) is Windsor, held in
early July in the park below Windsor Castle. This year
BOB from over 200 Whippets under a new judge, Irish
Wolfhound breeder Jan Pain, was last year’s top winner,
the brindle & white bitch Ch. Palmik Magical Whispers JW,
who also went on to Group 2nd. The young US import Am.
Ch. Merci Isle Magnolia made her British debut at this show
and won a hotly contested Junior class.
Perhaps the biggest Whippet event in the UK this year
was the one hosted by the East Anglian Whippet Club
in mid-July. There was an Open show (similar to our
matches, with no CCs or points available) which had 244
Whippets entered. There was obedience, agility and racing,
a championship show with a record 407 dogs entered,
and also the “Whippet Stars” event, which most closely
compares to our “Top 20” tournament: all CC and Res.
CC winners of 2011 were invited and competed two by
two until just one dog, one bitch and one puppy remained.
Judges at the championship show were Jan Wood
(Ardencote) and Mary Lowe, whose Nimrodel prefix was
established in the 1960s and remains one of the most
famous ever in the U.K. The Dog CC and BOB went to the
fawn & white Ch. Willingwisp Star Trooper (Oakbark Moment
of Impact at Willingwisp x Willingwisp Slick N Sassy), bred
by Lesle Smeath but owned by Hanna Russell, whom some
American exhibitors may remember from the summer she
spent at Bohem eight or nine years ago. (She even showed
a few dogs during her visit and won a specialty Best in
Sweeps with the young “Vivi,” C’est la Vie.) Star Trooper
won BOB at Crufts earlier this year and is of part American
breeding through Ch. Statuesque Extortion.
