World’s greatest living
explorer applauds
brilliance at South
Staffordshire College
South Staffordshire College
was visited by the most famous
traveller in the world.
Sir Ranulph Fiennes, named the
World’s Greatest Living Explorer, came
to visit Rodbaston Campus to talk to
students from all the different Campuses
and share his experiences while travelling
around the World. Sir Ranulph told
students all about his achievements,
which include being the first person in the
World to visit North and South Poles by
surface, and how he crossed nearly all
of Antarctica on foot.
He has also raised £14 million for
various charities.
Summer 2012
The presentation was a part of the
College’s Speaker Programme, aiming to
help motivate students, hopefully inspiring
them to achieve things they want to do
and to never give up. After Sir Ranulph
had finished speaking and showing his
presentation, he did a question and answer
session for 15 minutes. After this a select
few from Lichfield Campus interviewed Sir
Ranulph face to face and the interview was
recorded, allowing fellow students who
weren’t able to attend to see it.
During Sir Ranulph’s talk, he praised the
College for its commitment to become
a World-class seat of learning. He said,
‘’Today I have spent time talking with
students and I’d like to share with you just
how impressed I have been. They are so
attentive and ambitious and I hope I have
been able to inspire them to keep going
at whatever they want to succeed in and
never give up”.
Sir Ranulph also officially opened the
College’s new £3.5 million Foster Learning
Centre, named after former Governor and
Chairman of Rodbaston College, Dennis
Foster. At the event students from all four
College Campuses contributed to the
event. Some students created lovely floral
arrangements and other students made
canapés and served them to the guests as
they walked in through reception.
Students raise cash to
adopt penguins
Level 3 Extended Diploma IT
students at Lichfield have been
working hard with the World
Wildlife Foundation in an effort
to protect penguins and their
habitat, raising enough money
to adopt penguins.
Penguins depend on sea ice for krill,
their main source of food, but due to
global warming parts of the Antarctic and
Southern Ocean are heating rapidly, wiping
out the krill and putting the penguins in
danger. Money raised through the adoption
process goes towards improving the
management of Antarctica’s sources and
safeguarding its wildlife.
The students donated money to adopt an
animal for one year and the Adélie penguin
proved most popular in the voting. The
students received fact books, certificates,
bookmarks and cute cuddly toy penguins,
and regular updates will be displayed in the
group’s main classroom.
Student Hayden Lang was proud to be a
part of the project saying, “We were given
a great opportunity by the College and it’s
a good and worthy charity to be involved
in. We’ll definitely continue our sponsorship
next year when it’s up for renewal.” Hayden
is just one of the ten students who took
part and is fully committed to the cause.
The students are encouraging peers to get
involved in similar WWF activities.
Helen Pratt, Progression Coach at College
commented, “It’s a pleasure to coach a
group of individuals who are willing to take
part in the opportunities offered to them by
the College. They are a credit to us and
well done to them all.”

Documentary produced
by Year 2 Media students
Students and staff go
the extra mile for charity
Media students have produced a DVD
documentary and a fan magazine for
up-and-coming Birmingham based
pop-rock band Taking Hayley.
Students and staff have raised money for the Sport
Relief charity. The annual Sport Relief Mile was
held at Tamworth and Rodbaston Campuses, with
a total of 337 people taking part in the races.
Taking Hayley embark on a major 12-date headline tour in
September, including a date at the Birmingham Ballroom. Tickets
cost £6 and are available at www.takinghayley.com. You can also

The event had a 1940’s theme and the Year 2 BTEC Extended
Diploma in Media students based at the College’s Progress
Centre took on the project to gain hands-on film making and
media publishing research.
Engagement Assistant, Ian Smith, spoke about the success of
the event, “The day was very busy and a real success; we had a
record number of people attending with 312 learners and 25 staff
in total taking part in the run.”
The students worked with the band for several months, producing
hours of film footage, taking photos, recording interviews and
telling the band’s story so far along with performances.
Ian Smith also announced that the participants have raised over
£400 for Sport Relief, “I have been delighted with the enthusiasm
for Sport Relief this year. To raise over £400 in a single day is a
fantastic achievement and one that we are very proud of.”
A presentation took place at the Progress Centre, where Media
Progression Coach Karen Jenkins presented the band with the
final cut of the DVD and magazine.
The College’s Team Leaders, Calin Dermott (DVD group) and
Matthew Watton (Magazine group) said “It was a fantastic
opportunity for the students to work on a ‘real life’ project”.
Calin said, “It has allowed us to gain experience in team and
project management, developing technical skills, making contacts
within the music/entertainment industry and giving us real
experience in media production”.

Tamworth Campus student, Alex Welland aged 18 said, “The
organisation of the event was great and our group took part in
fancy dress to help raise money. Events like this help students
get involved in something that is great fun and raises awareness
of an important cause.”

College and
Araldite® forming
powerful bond
Araldite® has agreed a business association with South
Staffordshire College engaging students from engineering and
media courses in programmes that add to their ‘employability’.
Engineering students will be using Araldite® adhesives in the design and build of a
unique, free running unpowered vehicle aiming to be included in the Skills Show at the
NEC in November 2012. An engineering student of the year will be nominated by the
College and this will also be supported by Araldite®.
Students from Lichfield Campus will be working on an equally challenging task. The
Level 3 Media students will be asked to devise and pitch a viral video which showcases
the properties of Araldite® adhesives to consumers.
Art and Design students create
murals for Tamworth Pool Hall
Students have been working
endlessly to research, design
and create a series of paintings
for the walls of Fast Eddie’s
Pool Hall in Tamworth. The
paintings are based on
celebrating sports and music.
Summer 2012
The students that have undertaken
this project are Level 3 Art and Design
students. Their first step was to
develop their ideas into 2D design
concepts and 3D scale models. After
this they showed Wayne Hughes,
owner of Fast Eddies, their final idea
and he made a list of the designs
he wished to have on the walls
of his pool hall.
Following a Dragons-Den style interrogation with representatives of South Staffordshire
College, Araldite® and creative agency Tregartha Dinnie, the preferred concept will
then be taken to production against a tight deadline.

said, “Learners will be exploring and
developing creative solutions. Working
with a live brief inspires confidence
and develops teamwork in addition
to individual creative skills. We are
extremely proud of the work our
Learners are doing and they are a real
asset to our College.”

Floristry students have achieved impressive
results after competing in a WorldSkills event.
Isabel Garbett, Louise Cooper and Hannah Robinson competed
against 10 other students in the Intermediate class in the
WorldSkills regional heat held recently at Moulton College,
with Isabel taking the coveted first place.
Each student had to create a hand-tied design with a structure
for world-famous singer Lady Gaga’s dressing room. They were
allowed to make this prior to the event and also had to produce a
wristlet design during the heat. The designs were then judged by
a panel of floristry experts who announced Isabel’s creation as
the winning entry.
Victoria is now a WorldSkills Ambassador and was on hand
at Moulton to give the competitors advice and encouragement
based on the experience she gained.

Louise and Hannah will go onto further training in September and
with two years’ experience will be eligible to enter the competition
in 2013. Both girls are very proud of their achievements, saying
“This was a fantastic experience and we feel we have learnt so
much. We have assessed what we will do differently next time
and which competition we are going to enter next.”
WorldSkills UK is a framework of regional and national skills
competitions delivered each year across the UK for young people
and adults. The WorldSkills competitions aim to showcase
excellence and help lift standards of training and performance
to promote world-class skills.
We have an excellent record in the WorldSkills arena, with
Beauty Therapist Charlotte Burford and Floristry student Victoria
Richards representing Team UK at Calgary in 2009 and London
in 2011 respectively.

Rodbaston Campus enjoyed another great
lambing season this year with over four hundred
new lambs delivered by College students and staff.
We offer confidential, impartial and objective information, advice
and guidance services about learning opportunities and the skills
and qualifications needed for employment or career progression.
Agriculture students and farming staff provided 24 hour care to the
two hundred and twenty expectant sheep to make sure this season
went smoothly, as it is always one of the busiest in the Campuses
calendar. The experience provides essential knowledge and
expertise for the student’s future careers.
The Guidance team will support you in the complex decisions
you have to make by accessing careers information and on-line
resources, talking over your ideas and setting you tasks to take.
Sometimes we will challenge what you want to do because it is
in your interest for us to do so. We aim to motivate students to
work hard and be as prepared as we are for careers interviews,
and working with other agencies ensures we will always find
someone to help you!
Rodbaston’s two lambing weekend events, where the public is
invited in to see the new lambs, are always immensely popular and
this year was no different, the baby lambs and calves delighting
children and adults alike. Farm Manager Jon Giles, always looks
forward to welcoming the families to the event saying, “The
experience gained by the farm staff and students is important in
the welfare and caring of the animals and we all look forward to the
lambing weekends. It’s always very rewarding to see how much
pleasure children and adults get through the close interaction with
the farm animals and all the hard work behind the scenes is worth
it to see their faces”.

Your favourite band’s, favourite band is back.
While never one of the most successful punk
acts, Hot Water Music (HWM) have been
hugely influential to the underground punk
scene and their signature gruff-punk style
has been often emulated, but rarely bettered.
The long awaited fourth album by East
Sussex piano-lovers Keane is finally here.
It may have taken four years, but they’re
back and after the mixed reception of 2008’s
good but divisive Perfect Symmetry, which
saw them taking on other instruments and
sounds, maybe it was time to play it a little
more safe. The question is - does this tried
and true formula still cut it?
Brian Warner AKA Marilyn Manson was
once one of the most infamous entertainment
figures and cult icons in the world. Over
a decade ago, his name struck terror in the
hearts of concerned parents and spoke out
to a generation of troubled youngsters. He
was one of the most talked about people in
the music industry. Come 2007 though, things
had changed. His personal life had taken a
turn for the worse, the hype surrounding him
had more or less died out, and his music
was missing something. To say his last two
efforts - 2007’s Eat Me, Drink Me and 2009’s
The High End of Low were questionable
would be generous. Manson’s reputation as
a songwriter was hit by a lack of focus - or
any memorable songs, for that matter. To
make matters worse, a devastatingly bad
performance at 2009’s Download Festival
cemented his unfortunate status as the very
definition of has-been.
In 2006 comedy rock duo Jack Black
and Kyle Glass - Tenacious D - released
The Pick of Destiny, a film (and
accompanying soundtrack album) to
chronicle the ‘story’ of their origins, and
although it was fun, it was also a commercial
failure. Their future looked bleak, but after
much speculation and hoping, The D have
risen from the ashes of their failed film
and aren’t pulling any punches.
When HWM disbanded in 2006 (for the second
time), front man Chuck Ragan went on to do a
Frank Turner-esque acoustic solo project, while
the rest of the band formed short-lived punk
act The Draft. It wasn’t long before they gave in
and reunited in 2008, and now the Gainesville,
Florida foursome present Exister, their first
outing in eight years. It’s like they never left.
For those unfamiliar with HWM, they possess
a unique sound that combines the soulful,
folk-inspired croon of The Gaslight Anthem and
Social Distortion, with the grit and punch of punk
acts like Bad Religion.
Exister’s standout tracks, courtesy of co-singer
Chuck Ragan, are the album’s bookends; opener
Mainland and Paid in Full, which attack with
sharp riffage and a sense of urgency that feels
good to hear after all this time away. In addition,
‘Drown in It’ sounds like a punk rock soundtrack
to a classic Western film.
That said, it’s not for everyone. Some numbers,
like ‘Drag My Body’, are a little deflating, while
the whiskey-soaked punk style the band employ
won’t be to everyone’s liking. Unless you’re a
HWM or punk rock devotee, Exister probably
won’t click with you on first listen. But give it
some time and you’ll realise that, like the rest of
their material, it’s got some truly great moments.
HWM have been around for a while now, and it
shows, but in a good way - like a well-travelled
cowboy who’s seen a few things, but wears his
heart on his sleeve and never forgets his roots.
For Fans of: Alkaline Trio, Social Distortion
Rating:
Strangeland is an album primarily for those
who long for the simpler, piano-oriented sounds
of their 2004 Hopes and Fears album. Those
who enjoyed the experimental, guitar-driven
style employed on 2009’s Perfect Symmetry,
may be a little disappointed to find that
Strangeland is much more back to basics,
but this is classic Keane and whatever era
of the band you prefer, there’s something
for you to enjoy on Strangeland.
It begins with ‘You Are Young’ which would
fit comfortably on their first album. From this
point forth the album continues in more or less
a straight line. ‘Silenced By the Night’ is classic
Keane, as is ‘Disconnected’. ‘Sovereign Light
Café’ suggests a nod to a slightly different
direction, but overall Strangeland knows its
formula and sticks to it. After all, it’s what
Keane do best.
There’s some darker moments, too, such as
‘Black Rain’ (which would’ve sat nicely on their
second album, Under the Iron Sea) but overall
this is a cheery album. Convenient that it should
be released before the summer, then, and in
time for their slot at this year’s V Festival. Their
live setlist is bound to be filled with songs from
Strangeland, and it’s guaranteed to go down
well with crowds. Another notable highlight is
the truly wonderful ‘Sea Fog’ ,which closes the
album in melancholic fashion.
The whole album has a cohesive, consistent
feel, but at the same time is fairly predictable
and while the return to their early style is
certainly welcome, perhaps something a little
more adventurous would’ve been nice. That
said there’s still plenty of great tunes to be
found and considering the current competition,
it’s worthy of that current #1 spot in the charts.
For Fans of: Coldplay, The Fray

This begs the question: is his new album,
Born Villain, a return to form, or another failed
shot at former glory by the artist formerly
known as Brian?
The album’s opener ‘Hey, Cruel World’ throws
back to the stomping industrial rock of yesteryear,
and is much more exciting than anything on his
last two releases. Following is lead single No
Reflection, which continues in the same vein.
Manson himself and keyboard player Chris
Vrenna handle production duties and they
deserve a gold star because Born Villain sounds
slick but not shiny, sounding crystal clear but
at the same time maintaining the grit and edge
that has been synonymous with Manson all
these years.
Born Villain starts off promisingly and suggests
a serious return to form for ol’ Brian. Not that it
becomes bad, but come the halfway mark and
that initial spark that came with the first few songs
has kind of faded, and songs tend to drag on and
sound samey. That and the album is a little too
long, but still, it could be a lot worse. It might not
have the magic of ‘Holy Wood’ or ‘Mechanical
Animals’, but Born Villain is a step in the right
direction and if continued, could put Manson back
onto his throne as rock’s most iconic anti-hero.
For Fans of: Korn, Rammstein, Murderdolls
Rating:
In the opening title track, the duo don’t even
hide the fact that their film flopped - “When the
Pick of Destiny came out it was a bomb / All the
critics said that The D was done.”, are the very
first words to leave Black’s mouth, but this more
than simply joking about their return - it lives
up to that promise that “the D will rise like the
phoenix” (or Fenix, if you will). ‘Following’ is
5 and a half minutes of pure rock awesomeness,
an acoustic guitar intro that builds up into a fullblown assault and sets the tone for this monster
of a record. Don’t think for a second that it’s all
work and no play, though; Rize of the Fenix is
as funny as anything they’ve done before and
spoken interludes are still present, even a
three-minute passage after only a couple of
songs, where a classical guitar teacher tutors
Kyle with rude but funny results, and the
brilliant ‘Flutes’ and ‘Trombones’.
In fact, Rize of the Fenix is a finely crafted
record that is more than just a rock version
of The Lonely Island. It parodies the idea of
a comeback album, but is actually better than
most because it isn’t just trying to reclaim the
past, but instead takes what made them so
lovable and taking it into new directions that
feels new and familiar at the same time.
The beauty of Tenacious D is that anyone
can enjoy them, but only rock enthusiasts will
truly get them. It’s more an affectionate, erm,
tribute, than a parody. There’s pokes at the
music industry, such as ‘Rock Is Dead’ where
Black truthfully laments the lack of interest in
big budget rock music, and even the ocassional
musical ode to heroes Led Zeppelin and Iron
Maiden that only devotees will notice. ‘To Be
the Best’ is a throwback to the ‘80s, while ‘They
F****d Our A***s’ echoes The Pick of Destiny’s
Master Exploder, but turned up to 11.
ALIASES
Genre: Progressive metal
WHO? This Manchester-based five-piece
rose from the ashes of guitarist Pin’s former
band, the influential and well-respected, SikTh.
Aliases set out to redefine the boundaries of
modern metal, and with their killer Safer Than
Reality they’ve already made their mark on
the UK prog-metal scene.

CHILDREN OF NOVA
Genre: Progressive rock
WHO? An innovative band from San
Diego, California, Children of Nova are
not as well-known as other prog-rock giants,
but they’re easily just as good. Their album
‘The Complexity of Light’ is a bona-fide
masterpiece in its own right and is essential
for anyone who is interested in experimental,
forward-thinking music.
For fans of: Muse, The Mars Volta.

CLOUD NOTHINGS
Genre: Indie/powerpop
WHO? Formed in 2009 by Dylan Baldi in his
parents’ basement, Cleveland, Ohio’s Cloud
Nothings quickly started getting attention
through the Internet, with critics praising Baldi’s
infectiously catchy melodies. Their new album,
‘Attack on Memory’ is nothing short of brilliant.
For fans of: The Strokes, Weezer.

THE COMPUTERS
Genre: Garage rock
WHO? Mixing punk with Hives-esque garage
rock and ‘50s-inspired rock n’ roll, Exeter’s The
Computers are truly a unique specimen and
are currently one of the best new bands in the
UK right now. Their debut album ‘This Is The
Computers’ was one of the best new albums
last year and they’re set to be one of the UK’s
hottest stars. Watch this space.

THE JAMES CLEAVER QUINTET
Genre: Post-Hardcore
WHO? The JCQ are from Eastbourne, UK.
They possess an eclectic sound that could
only be described as ‘party hardcore’ and are
slowly building a reputation as one of the UK’s
finest rising live acts. They’ll be at this year’s
Download Festival so check them out on the
Pepsi Max stage on Sunday.

10. Blood Red Shoes
Composed of singer/guitarist Laura-Mary Carter and singer/drummer
Steven Ansell, Blood Red Shoes are one of the UK’s finest rock acts on
the horizon. They’ll be playing early on Reading & Leeds’ Main Stage.
9. The Gaslight Anthem
These New Jersey boys will be releasing their highly anticipated fourth
album, Handwritten, on July 23rd in the UK, just in time for their Reading
& Leeds performances. Their unique blues-punk style is a perfect
soundtrack to the summer and sunshine. Catch them on the Main Stage.
8. Trash Talk
Sacramento hardcore outfit Trash Talk have a growing reputation for
being one of the craziest live acts to hit the UK circuit since Gallows first
emerged. Catch them on the Lock-Up Stage where they’ll lay waste to
everything in their path – including you.
7. Pulled Apart By Horses
Their sophomore album, Tough Love, was released in February and has
skyrocketed them into the big game. Think Biffy Clyro fighting with At the
Drive-In and you’re not far off. This time they’ll be opening the Main Stage
to several thousand people!
6. OFWGKTA
Los Angeles hip-hop collective Odd Future (featuring Tyler, the Creator,
Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt and more) have been causing quite a buzz
lately and will be performing on the Main Stage. Expect absolute carnage.
No one’s getting out of this one alive.
5. Mastodon
A bit of an odd booking for a festival that focuses on alternative rock and
indie music, Mastodon are nevertheless one of the best bands on the
entire bill and have always been a consistently electrifying live band.
4. The Black Keys
Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney – also known as The Black Keys –
released their brilliant seventh album El Camino at the end of last year.
The blues rock duo will be gracing the Main Stage of Reading & Leeds.
3. At the Drive-In
One of the most important acts in the post-hardcore genre, At the Drive-In
were once an unstoppable force, but their break-up in 2001 came too
soon. But now they’re back and reading to annihilate Reading & Leeds.
Catch them headlining the NME/Radio 1 Stage.
2. The Cure
Robert Smith’s The Cure have been legends in their own right. Having sold
well over 27 million albums worldwide, they’re one of the most successful
bands of all time and seeing them live in this day and age is a privilege in
itself. They are one of the festival’s three Main Stage headliners.
1. Foo Fighters
One of the very best live bands on the planet. Arguably the biggest
modern rock band around right now. Simply put, they are the ultimate
festival band. Miss them and you’re a fool.

10. Rodrigo y Gabriela
Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero are a duo hailing from Mexico
City who play a unique style of Latin-styled folk music played entirely on
acoustic guitars. It’s safe to say this duo will be the odd one(s) out at V
and are well worth watching if you’re after pure musical talent
and showmanship.
9. Frank Ocean
The Odd Future man will be appearing solo at V for a performance that is
more R&B than hip-hop.
8. Maverick Sabre
His excellently received album Lonely Are the Brave dropped earlier this
year and seized a high spot on the charts. A sold-out UK tour followed and
his fanbase has swiftly increased tenfold.
7. Frank Turner
In April this year, cult folk-punk hero Frank Turner performed an incredible
sold-out show at this prestigious Wembley Arena in London for the biggest
show of his seven-year solo career. At V his wonderful music will be
exposed to a whole new audience.
6. Tom Jones
Now 71 years old, Welsh musical legend Tom Jones, is still writing music,
performing and acting as a judge on The Voice UK. Having sold over 100
million records and achieving thirty-six UK Top 40 hits, Jones is one of the
most successful singers of all time and will be performing a greatest hits set.
5. Happy Mondays
Returning for a fourth time, Shaun Ryder and co. will be once again
performing at V. One of the most successful acts to come out of the
Madchester scene of the ‘90s, Happy Mondays always know how to
start a party and their set at V is guaranteed to be a highlight.
4. Madness
There’s no band better suited to a festival in the summer than the London
kings of ska/reggae, Madness are guaranteed to get you jumping and
dancing around like a lunatic without shame!
3. Keane
Keane will be appearing at V Fest in support of their fantastic fourth album
Strangeland which was released last month. In addition to mega-single
favourites ‘Everybody’s Changing’ and ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ you’ll
also be treated to highlights from their incredible discography such as
‘Perfect Symmetry’ and ‘Crystal Ball’.
2. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Fresh from the demise of his former band, indie megastars Oasis. Noel and
his merry men have been booked to sub-headline the main stage at V this
year in what is sure to be a memorable performance.
1. The Stone Roses
After a 15 year absence, Madchester legends The Stone Roses will finally
be returning to perform a series of live dates in the UK, most significantly
their headline sets at both editions of this year’s V Festival! This will be a
rare opportunity to witness the likes of ‘She Bangs the Drum’ and ‘I Wanna
Be Adored’ - you’d be mad to miss them!

Fuse festival
Every year Lichfield’s FUSE festival attracts hordes of music
lovers to Beacon Park to enjoy an eclectic mix of music and art.
From silent discos to a band of thirty ukulele players, FUSE is
always an exciting event.
FUSE is the largest free community festival in the Midlands and is held at Beacon
Park in three large marquees. The main stage tent sees all manner of musicians from
indie, pop and rock music to medieval minstrel groups. The acoustic tent is exactly
what is says, where it also has an open mic session on two of the days giving anyone
a chance to get up and play. Surrounding these is all manner of small stalls, food tents
and activities.
Last year’s festival was an amazing event with a huge turnout and great weather, with
this year looking to be a similar experience. The main stage line up is comprised of last
year’s favourites and new local talent, with Lichfield’s Arts Charity setting up a massive
two day busking event on Speaker’s Corner, to find both musicians for the acoustic
tent as well as raise funds for the festival. The weekend event named “Buskathon”,
raised over £2000 last year for FUSE and hopes to do the same this year.
Both events are well worth a look if you’re around and they’re both free!
Buskathon is on the 23rd and 24th June and FUSE is on the 6th, 7th and 8th July.

Long before the films, the games and the TV shows, there were the comics. Since his debut in Detective
Comics back in 1940, Batman has been featured in hundreds of comic books. Here is a quick guide to

THE ESSENTIALS
The third and final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises takes
place eight years after the events of 2008’s The Dark Knight, where Batman returns to Gotham
City after being hunted by the GCPD after the death of Harvey Dent, a noble lawyer and one of
Batman’s finest allies who was transformed into the villain Two-Face, after his grueling battle
with Gotham’s criminal underworld. In an attempt to protect Dent’s reputation as one of Gotham’s
few good people, Batman took responsibility for Dent’s actions and has been on the run since.
However, the Dark Knight’s return becomes imperative when he learns of a plot to destroy
Gotham by a mysterious new enemy called Bane...

this, Bruce Wayne becomes the Dark Knight after witnessing his parents’ murder
and pledges to cleanse Gotham City of evil, including the villainous madman
Scarecrow and the ancient terrorist Ra’s Al Ghul.

Bane is set to be the main villain of The Dark Knight Rises, but for those unfamiliar with
him, here’s a summary of who he is and why he’s a worthy enemy for the Dark Knight...
Bane was born and raised in a Central
American island prison as an orphan. He
spent his childhood and early adult life in the
prison serving for his dead father’s sentence,
where he developed his physical and mental
skills to their absolute peak. While Bane is
already in peak physical condition, he uses a
special drug called ‘venom’ which enhances his
abilities to superhuman levels, making him a
virtually unstoppable beast. In addition, he has
genius-level intellect, easily rivaling that of Bruce
Wayne, and is an expert strategist, martial artist
and a master of disguise. Put all these together
and you have one of the deadliest enemies
Batman has ever faced.
Bane first appeared in Batman: Vengeance of
Bane #1, released in 1993, the prelude to the
Batman: Knightfall saga. In this he breaks out all
of Batman’s worst enemies from Arkham Asylum,
unleashing them into Gotham while wreaking

havoc on the city himself in an intricately
prepared scheme to push Batman to his physical
and mental limits. Chasing and recapturing all the
escaped villains exhausts Batman to the point
where he can barely walk. Bane successfully
deduces Batman’s true identity and invades
his home and mercilessly batters him to a pulp,
leading to an iconic scene in which he breaks the
Dark Knight’s back.
In The Dark Knight Rises, he will be portrayed
by Tom Hardy (Inception, Tinker Tailor Soldier
Spy). His role in the film’s plot is unknown at
this moment, so you’ll have to find out when the
film releases next month! If you’re interested in

The Joker back to Arkham Asylum,
but something doesn’t seem right.
The Joker practically surrendered
without a fight, and the whole thing
seems a little… planned. After being
escorted deep into the Asylum the
Joker escapes and reveals that he
has indeed set a trap, leaving Batman
and the Asylum’s staff locked inside
the prison with bombs planted all
over Gotham, threatening to detonate
them if anyone is to approach. An
amazing attention to detail, a fluid and
fun combat system, intricately and
masterfully designed levels and as
faithful to Batman lore as possible,
Arkham Asylum is a triumph not just
as a Batman adaptation but as a game.

The follow-up to the massively successful
Arkham Asylum, Arkham City is not only just as
good, but even better than its predecessor! Set
a few months after the events of the first game,
this time part of Gotham City has been converted
into a massive mega-prison called Arkham City
in a plot by the Asylum’s Warden Sharp and a
mysterious man called Professor Hugo Strange,
who claims to know Batman’s real identity!
Batman must uncover the truth behind these
events and defeat this new enemy. More gadgets,
more characters (including a playable Catwoman,
Robin and Nightwing), more side-missions and
improved gameplay, Arkham City was truly one
of the standout games of 2011 and is easily the
ultimate superhero title. Arkham City makes the
original look like a test run.

Marvel’s Avengers Assemble
American Pie: Reunion

Captain America, The Hulk, Iron Man and
Thor combine in Marvels latest film, Avengers
Assemble. The combination of the different
superheroes is a brilliant mix of skill, power
and superhero abilities. However, the divide
in personalities and values lead to a bit of a
problem for S.H.I.E.L.D. boss Nick Fury.
They’re back! Stifler, Jim, Oz, Kevin and Finch are
reunited once again as the boys attend their 13th
high school reunion. The film has a lot to keep up
with, with a change in humour and the fact that
the characters are now in their 30’s, but even with
the wide gap since the last film, American Pie:
Reunion is perhaps the best of them all.
UK Release Date: 4th July 2012 – Spidey’s
back. Rather than Spiderman 4, Marvel has
decided to go back to the start with Spiderman.
UK Release Date: 6th July 2012 – The fourth of
the Ice Age films that people of all ages have
grown to love is back but it is questionable as to
whether the films have now gone on for too long?
Each superhero gets a good share of the limelight in
the Avengers, so whether you prefer the patriotism of
Captain America or the sheer sarcasm of Tony Stark, each
character has their own uprising in one way or another and
bring extra depth to the story line, away from the action and
mayhem that Loki, brother of Thor, is releasing upon Earth.
Loki is the villain in the film who is attempting to bring
chaos to Earth, however the earth’s mightiest heroes pull
together and after an unfortunate run-in with the Hulk,
Loki is subsequently put in his place.
The boys are facing different problems now to what they
were in school. Finch is struggling with finding love, Kevin
is doubting his marriage, Oz is in a relationship he doesn’t
want, Jim is now a father and is attracting the attention
of an 18-year old girl, and Stifler? He hasn’t changed one
bit! There are some classic characters back too. Jim’s dad
plays a big role in the film and has his fair share of funny
moments, especially when he meets Stifler’s mom.
Before going out and watching the Avengers, I recommend
watching the Marvel films before this one. The Incredible
Hulk, Iron Man 1 and 2 are important, but Captain America
and Thor are perhaps more relevant to the plot. You won’t
be completely lost without watching these films, personally
I watched Thor after this and I still understood it.
Overall, American Pie: Reunion is going to be one of the
greatest comedies of 2012 and is definitely one that people
should watch if they enjoyed the first film which came out
in 1999. 13 years on and the film is still hilarious and still
seems new. And it is definitely recommended to stay
and watch the credits.
After a successful reign as Peter Parker, Toby McGuire
has been replaced by Andrew Garfield, (co-star of Social
Network). There are some new interesting revelations
about Parker’s family and back story, as well as the
appearance of the much-anticipated Lizard (Rhys Ifans).
Mannie, Sid and Diego return and are now dealing with
new loves, long lost families and the loveable Scrat, whose
acorn pursuit has disastrous consequences. Nicki Minaj,
Drake and Jennifer Lopez are voicing some of the new
characters. The film is the first to not be directed by Carlos
Saldanha so we can expect a big change from the mediocre,
Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
Ted
UK Release Date: 1st August 2012 – From the
creators of Family Guy, Ted looks to be the
biggest comedy of the summer.
Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis star with their loveable teddy
bear, Ted, voiced by Seth MacFarlane. As a boy, Wahlberg
wishes his teddy bear to be a living thing and his wish is
granted. And as they both get older, Ted gets older too. The
film looks hilarious and with Seth MacFarlane behind the
film, it can’t fail to make you laugh.

Hitman: Absolution
The sequel to THQ’s first Darksiders game, Darksiders II
doesn’t actually take place after the first game, but rather
at the same time. In Darksiders II you take control of the
Horseman Death instead of his brother War, who was the
star of the first game. Think a darker, more violent Zelda
crossed with God of War and you’re not too far off.
Gearbox Software’s Borderlands was a huge hit. A first
person shooter with heavy role playing elements and
multiple main characters, each with their own special
skills and weapons. The original game had a unique
cel-shading cartoon art style (which is set to return), and
unique Fallout-meets-Final Fantasy style gameplay, it
was a big success. Can the sequel replicate what made
the first game so good while adding something new?
Release date: September 21st.
You just can’t keep a man down, can you? Despite
‘finishing the fight’ in 2007’s Halo 3 Master Chief returns
for the beginning of a brand new trilogy this time
developed by 343 Industries instead of original creators
Bungie. Details are sketchy right now, but we can’t wait
for this to be released in November - it’s Halo after all!
Taking a break from the so-so Kane and Lynch series, IO
Interactive have returned to their true baby - the Hitman
franchise. This long awaited fifth chapter in six years, will
bring Agent 47 into the modern gaming age, with slightly
different gameplay this time featuring a heavier emphasis
on action and gunplay, but still maintaining the series’
signature stealth and strategy.

Assassin’s Creed III
Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
The sixth instalment in Capcom’s legendary Resident Evil
franchise returns this October. This time, instead of a single
linear campaign featuring one playable character, Resi 6 will
allow players to select between three different scenarios
with connected storylines. Zombies will return as well as a
new type of enemy called the J’avo. Leon Kennedy and Chris
Redfield will both return as playable characters in what is sure
to be the survival horror game of the year.
Ubisoft’s mega-successful series returns, this time set
in the American Revolution of the late 18th Century and
featuring a new protagonist called Connor Kenway.
Historical figures such as George Washington, Benjamin
Franklin and Thomas Jefferson are set to appear among
many others. The player will also be able to explore
Boston and New York! There’ll be loads of new weapons
and abilities as well as a multiplayer mode!
Release date: October 31st.
Ignore the ridiculous title for a minute. Hideo Kojima’s
famed Metal Gear series returns in 2012 but this time
with a different protagonist. Raiden of Metal Gear Solid 2
and 4 fame (or infamy) stars in Rising instead of Snake,
and instead of ‘tactical espionage action’, which the
series is so well known for, Rising will feature, ‘lightning
bolt action’. Basically, lots of over the top swordfighting
and Devil May Cry-esque hacking and slashing.
Here’s an interesting one. Sony’s own answer to Nintendo’s
famed crossover-fighter Super Smash Bros. has been
revealed, and boy does it look good! Not much has been
revealed so far, but essentially it’s all your favourite
PlayStation characters fighting each other - what’s not to
love? God of War’s Kratos vs Fat Princess? Killzone’s Col.
Radec against Parappa the Rapper? Why not?!
Release date: October 23rd.

Flash back to the 90s: grunge ruled with an iron fist, megastars from Jay-Z to Oasis wouldn’t be caught
dead without their designer sportswear, and blockbuster Clueless gave a complete re-invention of the
term “preppy”. With the comeback of rucksacks, creepers, plaid shirts and Adidas Original clothing, 2012
gives the 90’s a whole new fresh makeover, incorporating smart tailoring and kooky accessories.
MALES – BAGGY TREND
FEMALES – GRUNGE
Chinos and slogan tees are a thing of the past for the male
population as acid house music and it’s laid back style make a super
indie comeback. Think Britpop, Oasis vs Blur and more surprisingly
Jay-Z. Inspired heavily by the early 90s British music scene, the
baggy trend is essentially what the label says – baggy. Mega
slouchy tees, ultra tight jeans/trousers mixed with a combination of
designer sportswear and NY caps, and of course how can we forget
the baggy jeans, which certain hip hop stars like to wear halfway
down their derriere. Starting with the Fresh Prince of Bel Air era,
most singers from “da hood” nowadays find this particular item a
must, and you’ll find everyone from Tinchy Stryder to JLS baring
their boxers. Tie dye and dip dye prints are slowly being incorporated
into more mainstream fashion as well with Gucci showcasing their
dip dye tailored suits on their 2012 catwalk.
Courtney Love seems an unlikely style icon, but believe it or
not a bevy of celebrities are jumping in on the grunge act.
Gossip Girl turned rock front -woman Taylor Momsen is the
front runner so far, sporting panda eye make-up, sturdy boots,
ripped stockings and tiny black dresses as seen on the Vivienne
Westwood catwalk. Supermodel Alice Dellal is also renowned
for her love of the grunge theme and has been getting into the
act ever since 2004 when she drastically shaved the side of her
head and began wearing heavy leather jackets, studded denim
cut offs and crucifix necklaces. However, it’s not just the rock
chicks who love their Hole inspired clothing, R’n’B superstar
Rihanna has taken a liking to cult clothing brand Boy London
and was seen in a range of classic 90s clobber in her We Found
Love video including Creepers, double denim and acid wash.
Whilst we are fully embracing Kurt Cobain style plaid shirts
there are some 90s statements we definitely won’t be trying:
- Geri Halliwell’s infamous Union Jack dress and
Spice Girls platform shoes
- Dungarees
- Turtlenecks
- Jelly shoes.
South Staffordshire
College student to carry
the Olympic Torch
Emma Farrell is taking part in one of the greatest
sporting events in the world.
Emma has been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch on one of the
legs of its UK journey after her best friend nominated her to be put
forward for consideration.
The flame for the London 2012 torch relay and Olympic Games
was lit during a ceremony in Olympia, Greece and arrived in
Britain on Friday 18th May for its 70-day relay around the UK.
On 30th June, Emma will run 300 metres with the Olympic torch
in Newtown, Birmingham.
Emma, aged 17 from Glascote, is in her final year studying
Level 3 Childcare and Education at Tamworth Campus. She was

chosen because of her young volunteer teaching activities in
cheerleading, street dance, Glee, Fit Kids and athletics in the local
community. She also performs for dance company Maddisons CIC.
Emma is absolutely delighted to receive this honour saying “I’m
very happy, as I’ve been doing voluntary work for many years and
feel that all my hard work is being rewarded. It’s certainly a once in
a life time opportunity.”
Trudie McGuinness, Director of Learner Experience said, “We are
delighted that Emma will be part of such an historic opportunity. It is
great that through Emma’s voluntary work, her dedication, positivity
and community spirit have been recognised in such a special
way. Emma is a real torchbearer for her peers and for South
Staffordshire College.”
