Sekisui has established a deserved reputation for quality and
excellence among a broad range of clients including residential
construction firms, tatami retailers, design studios and furniture
suppliers.
Uncompromising dedication to quality
Sekisui molding factories employ a variety of plastics technologies including extrusion molding,
blow molding, stretch molding and ultradrawn forming developed for production of plate sheets,
containers and packaging materials. As a leading supplier of plastics products, we are committed
to delivering maximum value to customers in the form of cost-effective solutions tailored to the
demands of the marketplace.
Helping the environment
A key part of our mission at Sekisui is to create harmony with the natural environment and social
spaces. Migusa series tatami is made from safe, environmentally friendly materials, free of
formaldehydes and other substances associated with Sick Building Syndrome. Sekisui products
will not generate toxins or other toxic by-products if burned, and are designed to reduce global
warming with minimal environmental impact throughout the life cycle from development and
production through to delivery and installation. The Migusa tatami series symbolizes the Sekisui
commitment to a more sustainable society.

What is
Migusa?
Migusa is a new type of tatami developed by Sekisui
that delivers modern-day functional performance while
retaining the authentic texture and feel of all-natural mat rush.
Migusa is a unique product made from traditional mat rush together with a specially developed plastic
containing inorganic calcium. The mat rush delivers the authentic texture and feel of tatami matting
while the plastic component enhances durability, improves product safety and allows greater flexibility
of design and color schemes.

Durable and long-lasting
Migusa fiber lasts far longer than conventional mat rush, with minimal
degradation over time and excellent resistance to common problems such
as strand splitting. Product replacement intervals are therefore much longer.

04 Health benefits from improved resistance to mold and mites
Clean and hygienic
A surface used for everyday activities such as sitting and folding clothes should be clean and hygienic. Migusa boasts
improved resistance to mold and mites and is recommended by the Japan Atopic Dermatitis Patients Association.
<0.2 g of Tyrophagus Putrescentiae mold mites was added to surface water on the
test pieces and the increase in the mite population was monitored.>
«Test pieces were coated with bacteria then maintained at 28°C and 97% humidity.»

Against the weave (transverse)
Tatami is generally held to be
somewhat slippery in the direction of
the weave (vertical). The tests showed
that conventional mat rush is more
slippery than Migusa in the vertical
direction and less slippery in the
transverse direction. Migusa offers slip
resistance in both directions, for a
better overall balance.

Tatami mats specially designed for floor heaters—
bringing extra warmth to a Japanese room
Until now, tatami matting has never combined well with floor
heating systems, due to issues with thermal conductivity,
dimensional consistency and durability. Sekisui has developed
an ultra-thin tatami mat designed for use with in-floor heating
systems. Measuring just 12 mm in thickness, it features a
special high-conductivity core for optimum thermal transfer
along with the same high-quality Migusa surface layer.

The ultimate combination of design and functionality
Good Design Award
Kids Design Award
The prestigious Good Design Award was
bestowed on the Migusa series in
recognition of the application of advanced
plastics technology to develop exciting new
markets for the traditional tatami mat. In
particular, the use of plastics addresses
several limitations of traditional mat rush
tatami (mainly quality and durability) and
enables a wider range of colors designed to
suit Western-inspired home interior styling.
The Kids Design Award was presented to
Sekisui in recognition of a product that is
easy to maintain and helps regulate
humidity, thus providing a safe and
hygienic environment at floor level for
children and babies.

maintained to ensure many years of service.
Preventing damage
■ Migusa is resistant to damage and deformation in most
situations. For best results, however, sharp pieces that
exert concentrated force on the surface should be avoided.
■ If the surface becomes dented, apply an iron at low
heat through a handkerchief or thin cloth.
* Note that some dents cannot be removed completely. Avoid using a hot iron
or ironing for a prolonged period, as this can cause the product to melt.
Other
■ Never place a hot iron, kettle or pan directly on the product or aim hot air (e.g. from a
hair dryer) directly at the product.
■ Do not allow a lit cigarette to come into contact with the product.
■ Wipe spills such as kerosene immediately to prevent fires or swelling damage to the
product.
[Important information about floor mats] • The product is designed to be laid directly onto a hard floor. It is not intended as a substitute for conventional installed tatami matting. • The product contains plastic
which may melt in the presence of an iron or other concentrated heat source. • Do not use the product on a heated floor. Heat buildup can cause deformation and/or degradation of flooring. • Do not place
heavy objects or concentrated weight points (such as chair legs) directly on the product as deformation can occur. • Product should be used on a flat floor free of ridges, steps and bumps. • Do not treat the
product roughly or allow it to fall onto a corner edge. • Treat the non-slip soft base with care to prevent damage. • To prevent accidents, do not jump or slide onto the product. • To prevent accidents, take
care when walking across the product. • The product is designed to resist discoloration and staining. Nevertheless, dirt and stains should be wiped off immediately using a damp cloth. • Occasionally clean
the underneath of the product to prevent buildup of contaminants or liquids that could contribute to mold growth. • Store flat when not in use.
