We proudly use the grapes harvested on our
property to create red, white, and rosé wines ranging
from very dry to very sweet. Our first vines were
planted in 2005, and we presently grow nine varieties
of hybrid grapevines on seven acres.
Meier’s Wine Cellars, Inc. began in the late 1800’s when
John C. Meier, discovered a method of bottling fresh
grape juice and formed the J. C. Meier Juice Company,
Inc. In 1938, the company was renamed Meier’s Wine
Cellars, Inc. The company continues today as Ohio’s
largest winery producing over 45 kinds of awardwinning sparkling wines, table wines, dessert wines and
a premium line of sparkling nonalcoholic juices.

Below are the first couple of stanzas of Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow’s ‘Ode to Catawba’
which sang the praises of Longworth’s
accomplishments.
ODE TO CATAWBA WINE
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
(Written In Praise of Nicholas Longworth’s
Catawba Wine made on the banks of the
Ohio River)
This song of mine
Is a song of the Vine
To be sung by the glowing embers
Of wayside inns,
When the rain begins
To darken the drear Novembers.
It is not a song
Of the Scuppernong,
From warm Carolinian valleys,
Nor the Isabel
And the Muscadel
That bask in our garden alleys.
In the early 1970’s the Ohio River Valley
again emerged as the leading region in the
state’s viticultural history. New varieties
were planted on Wistar Marting’s Tarula
Farms near Clarksville. Those original
plantings [some of which are still used by
Valley Vineyards in Morrow] prompted
modern pioneers to launch a revolution in
Midwest winemaking. As techniques evolved
additional plantings of Vinifera, or European
style varietals, were also found to flourish in
the climate conditions offered by the ORV.
Reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet
Franc are showing exceptional promise. The
region is also noted for some of the nation’s
finest late harvest or ‘ice wines.’
The vintners of Ohio’s first and most historic
wine region invite you to travel the Ohio
River Valley....visit, explore and enjoy the
exceptional quality of their finest offerings.
Nor the red Mustang,
Whose clusters hang
O’er the waves of the Colorado,
And the fiery flood
Of whose purple blood
Has a dash of Spanish bravado.
For the richest and best
Is the wine of the West,
That grows by the Beautiful River,
Whose sweet perfume
Fills all the room
With a benison on the giver.
Nicholas Longworth’s successes in grape
growing and winemaking faltered as a result of
humidity driven vine diseases and a shortage
of labor wrought by the Civil War. The first
winemaking chapter in southwest Ohio ended
with Longworth’s death.
