MEETINGS AND EVENTS
Conditions of Sale
Bidding on items indicates acceptance of the following terms:
1. A 25% buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price on each lot sold.
A 12% buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price of any lot sold over $1,000,000.
2. All lots are sold “AS IS” and all sales are final. Neither we, nor the consignor are responsible for the
accuracy of any printed or verbal descriptions.
3. The auctioneer has the sole right to settle disputed bids and decide whether or not to re-offer the lot.
4. The record of sale kept by the auction house will be taken as final in the event of any dispute.
5. The purchaser assumes complete responsibility for items at the fall of the auctioneers hammer.
6. Some lots carry reserves. This is a confidential minimum set by the consignor and the auction house
below which a lot will not sell. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate.
7. Absentee bids will be executed when possible as a convenience to our clients. SUSANIN’S will not be
held responsible for any errors or failures to execute bids. Payment is due upon receipt of invoice.
SUSANIN’S does not provide shipping services, but can offer contact information for recommended
shipping firms.
8. Items may be withdrawn at any time prior to the offering of each lot.
9. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject an opening bid that, in his opinion, is not commensurate
with the value of the lot.
10. Payment must be made at the end of the sale unless prior arrangements have been made. SUSANIN’S
accepts cash, certified checks and money orders. Personal checks may be accepted if credit has been
established with us. We also accept Visa or Mastercard. Purchases of automobiles must be paid for with
cash, wire transfer or certified check. SUSANIN’S will not release the title or keys until full-payment
has been received and verified.
11. All purchases must be paid for within three business days after an auction, and removed from SUSANIN’S
within seven business days after an auction. Property which is not paid for within the three day period will
be charged to the purchaser’s credit card. Lots which are not removed from SUSANIN’S within seven days
are subject to storage fees at a rate of $25 per lot per day. Lots which are not removed from SUSANIN’S
within thirty days are subject to forfeiture. SUSANIN’S does not provide shipping services - shipping
arrangements must be made independently. Contact SUSANIN’S for shipping suggestions.
12. Any unresolved disputes arising from bidding and/or the purchase of items from SUSANIN’S will be
resolved through binding arbitration before a professional mediator, not through the courts. In any case
SUSANIN’S will never be liable for more than a refund of the purchase price.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How can I get information on SUSANIN’S upcoming auctions?
Details about upcoming sales are also available on SUSANIN’S Worldwide Web site at www.
auctionsmart.com, or by phone at 312-832-9800 or 1-888-SUSANINS.
Where can I get a catalogue, and when are they available?
SUSANIN’S offers a fully-illustrated black & white catalogue for $5.00. This catalogue can
be picked up at the front desk during exhibitions and auctions. If you are unable to attend the
exhibition or auction, you may call to request that a black & white catalogue be mailed to
you for $10.00 including shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. SUSANIN’S provides a
fully-searchable catalogue online at http://www.susanins.com. Color images of every lot are
viewable at the site.
Can I see the items prior to the auction?
Yes, and we recommend that you view them before buying. Auction preview begins the
Monday before the auction. Open throughout the week from 10-5. Extended viewing the Thurs.
before the auction from 10-7. Viewing is an opportunity to see the pieces first hand and
evaluate their condition for yourself. Exhibition staff is available to help remove a piece from its
casing or from a cabinet for closer inspection.
Is there an admission fee?
There is no charge to view or attend an auction. The public is invited and welcome!
How do I make an absentee bid, and does it cost anything?
For those who cannot attend the auction, absent bidding prior to the auction can be placed
and monitored at susanins.com. Additionally, an “Absentee Bid Form” is included with each
catalogue. The auctioneer will try to buy the lot for you at the lowest possible price, considering competing bids and the reserve. Absentee bids are easy and convenient and account for
a significant portion of all SUSANIN’S sales. There is no charge for placing an absentee bid.
If your bid is successful, you will have to pay the customary 25% buyer’s premium and other
applicable charges such as sales tax. It is your responsibility to ascertain if your bids were
successful and make sure that they are paid for and picked up within three days after the sale.
Please wait until the day following the sale to inquire. SUSANIN’S will notify you of successful
bids by mailing an invoice to the address in your record.
If I place an absentee bid, is that the amount I will have to pay?
The absentee bid you make indicates only the upper limit which you are prepared to pay. If you
are not actually outbid on the piece, the chances are you may purchase the lot for less than
your top amount. If you place or monitor your bids online, you will see that at any time you
only need to outbid any competition (or the minimum - see “reserve” above) by one increment.
Should any questions arise about the bidding process or results, we are happy to provide as
in-depth an explanation as possible to ease any doubts or concerns.
What are the “Conditions of Sale”?
This is the consignor’s and SUSANIN’S contract with the purchaser of any lot which is found
in each of our catalogues. The Conditions of Sale describe the terms under which SUSANIN’S
and the consignor (or owner of the property) agree to sell a lot to the purchaser. It is your
responsibility to read it carefully before making a bid.
What are “Condition Reports,” and where do I get them?
Condition reports are supplemental to the catalogue and provide additional information as
to the complete condition of a piece. If you are planning to bid on an item without viewing it
first-hand, it is a good idea to request a condition report prior to the auction. You can fax this
What is the “Buyer’s Premium”?
request to 312-832-9311 or email [email protected].
This is a commission that SUSANIN’S adds to every lot purchased at our auctions. It is paid by
the buyer. SUSANIN’S buyer premium is the industry-standard 25%
What kind of ID do I need to register?
In order to register you will need a Visa or Mastercard, and a driver’s license, passport or
an equivalent form of identification. You can also register online and your bidder number is
permanent and can be used online or in person. Your bidder number is valid for all auctions.
How do I bid?
Bidding at auction is a very straightforward process. The auction will follow the numerical
order given in the catalogue. Once your lot comes up, all you have to do to bid is raise your
paddle and wait for the auctioneer to acknowledge you. You don’t have to call out the amount
of your bid -- higher bids are automatically set by the auctioneer, at his/her discretion, but
generally according to the following increments:
Bidding Increments
$0—500 $25
$500—1,000 $50
$1,000—2,000 $100
$2,000—5,000 $200
$5,000—10,000 $500
$10,000—20,000 $1,000
Don’t feel you have to sit on your hands -- scratching your nose or pulling your ear will only
be taken as a bid if you have made a prior arrangement with the auctioneer. If nobody tops
your bid and it is higher than the reserve price and all absentee bids left with the auctioneer,
the auctioneer brings the hammer down to close the sale. As soon as you have finished all
bidding, you may return to the registration table with your paddle to receive an invoice and
make arrangements for payment. We prefer that you wait until you have completed all intended
purchases and are ready for pickup before requesting invoicing and payment. All items (with
the possible exception of larger pieces) are available to be picked up immediately following a
successful bid and payment. Please, note that the final purchase price is determined by adding
the customary 25% Buyer’s Premium to the hammer price, plus any applicable sales or use
tax.
Do I have to pay taxes?
If you pick up your purchase at SUSANIN’S sales room, you will be liable for the local sales
tax (currently 9.25% in Chicago). SUSANIN’S will not collect tax on items shipped out of the
state of Illinois. Also, please note the alphanumeric codes that appear next to the estimated
time on some lots. These refer to a list of sellers which appears in each catalogue. If that code
is present, it indicates that the seller has agreed to use of name and is not regularly engaged
in the business of selling that kind of property. Those factors make that item tax exempt and if
you purchase that item you will not be charged sales tax.
If I am a dealer, how do I register my resale number?
In the U.S., SUSANIN’S will accept resales on presentation of the resale license for Illinois or
the applicable state license. A copy must be on file with us.
How soon do I have to pay for a purchase?
Payment is due upon pickup of the items which can occur immediately following your last
successful bid, or within three days of the auction.
Do you take credit cards?
To obtain a bidder#, SUSANIN’S requires a valid Visa and Mastercard be on file. However, you
can also pay by check, cash or a money order, or by wire transfer. If your check was pre-approved (see the registration table), you can take possession of your purchase immediately after
the sale. Otherwise, your purchase will be released to you only after your check has cleared.
When can I pick my purchase up?
We encourage you to take your purchases with you immediately as long as we have received
payment in full (see above).
Do you charge for storage?
Where does the bidding start?
Bidding generally starts at about 10% below the low estimate of the object. The estimated price All purchases should be picked up within three business days after the auction. Items not
picked up within three business days after the sale will be charged to your credit card and
range for each lot is generally printed in the catalogue.
either shipped to you or sent to storage at your expense
What is the “Reserve”?
The “reserve” is the minimum price agreed to by the consignor and SUSANIN’S, below which Can you arrange shipping and insurance?
the property will not ordinarily be sold. If the bidding on the item fails to reach the reserve, the SUSANIN’S does NOT provide shipping services. We can, however recommend one or several

GLOSSARY
Absentee Bid
A chance to bid on a lot without actually attending the auction. To make an absentee bid, go
online and join in the pre-sale fun. Monitor your bids and see exactly where you stand prior
to the live auction. Alternately, fill in an “Absentee Bid Form” (found in the back of our
catalogues) with the name and lot number of the piece and your price limit, and return the
form to SUSANIN’S. An absentee bid is an excellent way to slip in a low bid on the off-chance
there might be a lack of demand for a specific lot that day, or to place a strong bid when you
cannot attend the auction or do not want to disclose your identity. The disadvantage? You risk
being outbid for a desirable piece unless you are present to respond to other bidders.
Appraisal
Formal written appraisals (usually for a fee) are not necessary to determine a pre-sale
auction estimate. If you are interested in selling something at auction, SUSANIN’S is pleased
to provide a pre-sale estimate at no charge every Friday, from 9:30-Noon no appointment
necessary or by way of photos mailed to our address or emailed to [email protected].
For other purposes, a formal written appraisal can be provided for either fair market value or
insurance values. Fair market value represents what we believe an item would bring at auction.
Insurance values reflect what we believe it would cost to replace an item. Since an appraisal
is made by comparing the object with similar works sold recently, the appraiser must have a
good knowledge of the market. No appraisal is definitive, but you are generally best off using
a reputable auction house with a large turnover, such as SUSANIN’S. For more information,
please contact SUSANIN’S at (312) 832-9800.
As Is
All property is offered for sale at auction “as is,” which means the property is sold with all
existing faults and imperfections. Thus, potential buyers are encouraged to inspect each item
carefully before bidding.
Bought In
If a lot has no bidders or fails to get a bid at or above the minimum sale price (see Reserve)
set by the owner, it is “bought in” by SUSANIN’S. We do not literally buy it; the piece simply
remains the property of the owner. Synonyms for “bought in” include “withdrawn,” “returned
to owner” and “passed.”
Buyer’s Premium
This is a commission that SUSANIN’S adds to every lot purchased at our auctions. It is paid
by the Buyer. The Buyer’s Premium is 25%.
Conditions of Sale
The all-important text found in our catalogues which describe the terms under which
SUSANIN’S and the consignor (or owner of the property) agree to sell a lot to the purchaser.
Increment
The amount by which the auctioneer increases the bidding. In general, the auctioneer will
request for bids of about 10% higher than the previous bid. If, for instance, the bidding opens
at $500, subsequent bids for $550, $600, $650 and so on (the figure is generally rounded
up or down at the auctioneer’s discretion). See “Frequently Asked Questions” for more
information.
Lot
An individual item or group of items that is sold as one unit at an auction. A lot might for
instance consist of just one antique snuff box or a multiple-piece dinner service.
Paddle/Bidder#
A printed paper sheet given to each bidder at SUSANIN’S at the registration table. The paddle
contains the permanent number assigned to the bidder. When you want to place a bid, you
simply raise your paddle until the auctioneer acknowledges you. If you are successful, your
number is recorded alongside your bid. SUSANIN’S bidder numbers are assigned permanently
and can be used for any sale online or live
Pre-Sale Estimate
The price range in which we expect a piece to sell at auction. This estimate is based on our
examination of the item and our knowledge of the prices achieved by similar objects sold.
Pre-sale estimates are generally published in the catalogue. Since the market fluctuates
regularly, however, estimates sometimes change before the sale date. The pre-sale estimate
provides prospective buyers with an important preliminary guide to value and is generally the
basis for establishing the reserve price (see below). An estimate is not to be confused with an
appraisal (see above), which is a formal written document used for insurance, estate and tax
purposes. As with the appraisal, estimates are our best judgment and opinion, but are not a
guarantee that the item will sell for the specific price.lable on our website - www.susanins.com.
Price List
A list recording the final sale price of each lot (the hammer price, plus the buyer’s premium).
Price lists are available on our website — www.susanins.com.
Provenance
The history of ownership of the property being sold. This can be an important part of the
authentication process as it establishes the chain of ownership back (if possible) to the time
the piece was made. An interesting provenance can add to the value of a piece.
Reserve Price
The “reserve” is the confidential minimum price agreed to between the consignor and
SUSANIN’S, below which the property will not ordinarily be sold. If the bidding at the auction
fails to reach the reserve, the piece is “bought in” and returned to its owner. To protect the
consignor’s interests, the reserve is kept confidential by SUSANIN’S.
Consignment
The physical transfer of property (not ownership) to SUSANIN’S for sale at auction. SUSANIN’S
Sale Number
then acts as an agent for the “consignor,” the owner of the property.
Every auction at SUSANIN’S is given an individual sale number to distinguish it from previous
and subsequent sales. It is important to have this information when contacting SUSANIN’S and
Fair Warning
A warning sometimes given by the auctioneer that the hammer is about to come down on a lot. when searching catalogues on our website. You will find it on the title page of the catalogue.
The fair warning gives you a last chance to increase the bidding. If there are no subsequent
bids, the auctioneer’s hammer falls and the sale is completed.
Hammer Price
The final bid made before the hammer falls and closes the sale of the lot. The hammer price is
distinct from the final purchase price in that it does not include the 25% buyer’s premium or
any taxes which may be applicable.
Telephone and Internet Bidding
In certain cases, SUSANIN’S will accept bids from a potential buyer by telephone. An
auctioneer’s assistant in the sales room will relay the bidding information. Telephone bidding
is generally only an option for lots of substantial value. SUSANIN’S also offers live internet
bidding during each auction. You only need your bidder number and PIN (obtained on the
site, or from our registration desk). Instructions and conditions are availble online.
