OVERVIEW
BANKING
WITH CHATTANOOGA’S ARRAY OF
LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL
BANKS, along with credit unions and
savings and loan institutions, individuals
and businesses alike enjoy a variety of
money management options.
Depending on the bank, residents have the
opportunity to benefit from banking services for
their individual, business, and wealth management
needs. Standard personal banking services include
deposits, loans, mortgages, and investment options.
Business services can range from deposits and
loans, to cash flow and treasury management, to
employee benefits and succession planning. Wealth
management services extend to financial planning,
pensions, 401k plans, portfolio management, trusts,
insurance, and more.
As with most financial institutions across the
United States, Chattanooga area banks are working
to serve the needs of aging baby boomers, emerging
millennials, and more women wage earners who
need varying levels of personalized services faster
and more conveniently. To meet these needs, most
banks are quickly and successfully offering mobile
online banking services, expanded digital banking,
and enhanced security. ATMs have and continue
to be expanded or strategically placed for greater
banking convenience, and branch offices are
changing to reflect a more contemporary, casual,
and personal atmosphere.
DID YOU KNOW?
Chattanooga’s banking roots go all
the way back to pre-Civil War times.
The Bank of Chattanooga opened at
the corner of Market and Third streets
in 1855 and even produced its own
currency, including copper and silver
coins and dollar bills.
To further enhance resources needed to better
serve Chattanooga area clients, banks have continued to acquire and merge. In 2015, Pinnacle
Financial Partners purchased CapitalMark Bank and
Trust. FirstBank of Lexington, Tennessee merged
with Northwest Georgia Bank. SmartBank of Knoxville, Tennessee merged with Cornerstone Community Bank, and FSG Bank merged with Atlanta’s
Atlantic Capital Bank. These mergers and acquisitions follow First Citizens National Bank’s (Dyersburg,
Tennessee) 2014 acquisition of Southern Heritage
Bank, and United Community Bank's 2015 purchase
of Money Tree and its subsidiary First National Bank.

First Tennessee
Focusing on the next 150 years
People, culture, customer service; dedication to convenience and
corporate citizenship – that’s First Tennessee, Chattanooga’s
premier provider of financial services for more than three
decades and the largest bank in the Southeast for the fifth year
in a row. With $1.4 billion dollars in loans outstanding and
over $2.3 billion in deposits, First Tennessee is the full service
bank of choice for consumers, small businesses and corporate
clients in the region.
First Tennessee’s promise is to be the best at serving customers,
one opportunity at a time. That promise builds on a 150year history of serving Tennesseans. Founded in 1864, when
Abraham Lincoln was president, the bank celebrated its 150th
anniversary in March 2014.
The First Tennessee Pavilion hosts the Chattanooga Market
along with many local, regional and national events.

First Tennessee’s historic legacy of service depends on
employees earning the trust of customers. For the eighth
straight year, First Tennessee was voted the area’s best bank
by readers of the Chattanooga Times Free Press. It was also
recognized as a top investor relations company by Institutional
Investor magazine and named to the elite 100 of technology
innovators by InformationWeek 500. In a recent survey, 90%
of First Tennessee customers said they would recommend the
bank to a friend or family member.
To achieve this level of success requires a workplace that attracts
and retains the best employees. For 2013 through 2015 First
Tennessee was recognized by American Banker as the number
one bank to work for with assets over $10 billion. Other
awards and recognition included top diversity employer by
Professional Women’s Multicultural magazine, top 10 diversity
innovator by Profiles in Diversity Journal, and top 50 company
for executive women by the National Association for Female
Executives. In 2015, Forbes magazine ranked First Tennessee
27 among America’s 500 best employers.The bank has been
consistently noted as one of the nation’s best employers by
AARP and Working Mother magazines and among the best
adoption-friendly workplaces by the Dave Thomas Foundation,
further recognizing the company as an employer of choice.
“There are a number of exceptional reasons to do business
with First Tennessee,” says Keith Sanford, Market President
for Hamilton & Bradley Counties, TN, and Catoosa County,
GA, which comprise the bank’s Southeast Market. “It cannot
be emphasized enough that when you get down to what
differentiates First Tennessee from competitors, our people,
culture, customer service and convenience are the top four.
Our people are very knowledgeable, they have long tenure
with the company, and the turnover among our relationship
managers is extremely low. We have great people! We provide
the quality service day in and day out that is respective of what
we have accomplished here. Our presence is second to none as
far as our level of customer service, and we have a large delivery
system with the most convenient hours in the market. First
Tennessee is an exceptionally good corporate citizen, always
working hard to serve and to improve our communities.”
First Tennessee, a subsidiary of Memphis-based First Horizon
National Corporation, is the largest bank headquartered in
Tennessee. Its 23 financial centers in the Chattanooga area
provide a convenient presence with every location open from
8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Friday
8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. We also have many financial centers open
on Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. FTN Financial, First Horizon’s
capital markets group, also serves the Southeast and has 21
offices in the U.S. and abroad.
Reliability and integrity, convenience, and a comprehensive
array of products are hallmarks of First Tennessee’s dedication
to the prosperous future of the Chattanooga area. “While
there are some basic products that all banks offer, we do
provide others that stand out among our peers and that smaller
banks may not be able to offer, such as sophisticated treasury
management services, or the ability to structure and underwrite
a large credit,” relates Sanford. “As for reliability and integrity,
we always want to do the right thing. That is foremost in our
minds, and we intend to be very transparent about everything,
as a company and as individuals. Without honesty, you really
have nothing.”
Sanford’s leadership and the principles that guide First
Tennessee are reflected in the company’s FIRSTPOWER
Culture. These tenets remind the people of First Tennessee of
their ownership and teamwork and that a job well done is the
first order of business. Further, they are empowered to take
Keith Sanford, Market President for Hamilton
and Bradley Counties, TN, and Catoosa County, GA
care of customers, both internally and externally; to foster an
inclusive workplace where every employee has the opportunity
to demonstrate high performance; to create a flexible work
environment so that team members can embrace both their
personal lives and their responsibilities at work; and also to
know that what they create at work is a reflection of themselves
and, as such, only the absolute best is good enough.
“Of First Tennessee’s four markets, the Chattanooga area has
always come out on top in an internal satisfaction survey, and
our people consider this a good place to work,” concludes
Sanford. “The residents and businesses in our area have a
number of reasons to do business with First Tennessee, and
we invite them to experience the finest quality available in a
banking relationship.”
Our Promise:
Be the best at serving our customers, one opportunity at a time
