ACT I It is Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house, a large and grand house with the most beautiful tree imaginable. The Stahlbaums are hosting their annual Christmas party, welcoming the arrival of their family and friends. The children, Clara and Fritz, are dancing and playing as they welcome their friends too The party grows festive with music and dance as Clara’s godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, arrives. He is a skilled clock and toy maker and is always full of surprises. Drosselmeyer draws everyone’s attention as he presents two life-sized dolls. They are the delight of the party, each taking a turn to dance. Herr Drosselmeyer then presents Clara a beautiful Nutcracker that becomes the focus of the party. Fritz becomes jealous, grabs the Nutcracker from Clara and promptly breaks it. Clara is heart-broken, but then Drosselmeyer quickly repairs the Nutcracker with a handkerchief that he magically draws from the air. As the evening grows late, the guests depart and the Stahlbaum family retires for the evening. As the clock strikes midnight, strange things begin to happen. The Nutcracker awakens to lead his army of toy soldiers into battle with the mice. The Mouse Queen corners the Nutcracker and they battle one-on-one. The Nutcracker seems to be no match for the Mouse Queen. Clara makes a final daring decision to throw her slipper at the Mouse Queen, hitting her square on the head. The Mouse Queen drops to the floor, and the mice scurry away with their leader’s lifeless body. ACT II The Nutcracker awakens and reveals his transformation into a handsome prince. He takes Clara on a journey to the Land of the Snow, an enchanted forest wonderland where they are welcomed by dancing snowflakes. The Prince escorts Clara to the Land of the Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy greets them. The Hot Chocolate from Spain, Coffee from Arabia, Tea from China, Reed Flutes from France, and Candy Canes from Russia, and the Waltz of the Flowers perform for Clara and the Prince. The Sugar Plum and her Cavalier dance a lovely pas de deux before the Kingdom of the Sweets bid Clara farewell. www.nutcrackerballet.net ACT I Clara: Melissa Ikeda Nutcracker: Marshall Whiteley Friends: Sarah Al-Qatou, Zoe Alles, Nadine Krill, Lindsey Rust Fritz: Sophie Shumway Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum: Mr. Richard Curtis, Mrs. Catherine Huber Parents: Dr. Aisha Cort, Ms. Jackie Carroll, Mr. Andrew Kane, Dr. Zack Krug Herr Drosselmeier: Mr. Carlo Grossman Ballerina Doll: Ryann Stout Mouse Queen: Alexa Mengenhauser**/ Charlotte Sadar* Head Mouse: Mrs. Julie Thomas Mice: Jack Austin, Eline De Causemaeker, Louise De Causemaeker, Demetrios Demetriou, Sonia Jackson, Charles Lindsay, Joseph Musella, Mia Palmieri, Francesca Pedry Head Soldier: Mrs. Leslie Viente Soldiers: Aidan Bae, Samuel Curtis, Erin Doran, Tristan Franklin, Leighton Kraus, Claire McLaughlin, Sophie Miller, Tyler Winans Snow: Kaitlin Andersen, Heather Cameron, Maggie Farace, Alexandra Lucas, Alexa Mengenhauser, Charlotte Sadar, Ryann Stout ACT II Angels: Hailey Hong, Alexandra Kovtun, Jacqueline Krug, Eileen Park, Eliana Park Sugar Plum Fairy: Alexa Mengenhauser*/ Charlotte Sadar** Russian: Heather Cameron, Maggie Farace Reed Flutes: Sydney Baffour, Melody Edemen, Carolyn Holran, Yoon Ji “Leslie” Kim, Jacqueline Plein, Evelyn “Lily” Rice, Lindsey Rust Arabian: Zoe Alles Spanish: Alexa Mengenhauser**/ Charlotte Sadar* Polichinelles: Sophie Shumway, Bianca Fiore, Madison Frank, Alexi Hamilton, Katherine Loesch, Homyra “Myra” Yousefi Chinese: Yoon Ji “Leslie” Kim, Jacqueline Plein , Lindsey Rust Dew Drop: Sarah Al-Qatou Waltz of the Flowers: Zoe Alles, Tanvi Bansal, Anna Boice, Jessica Kain, Nadine Krill, Moksha Sharma, Hayley Stout, Morgan Woelflein * Friday Evening and Saturday Afternoon,**Saturday Evening Meet our Resident Guest Artist MARSHALL WHITELEY of San Diego, California is in his first season with The Washington Ballet’s Studio Company after one season as a Trainee at The Washington School of Ballet.
