Tax ...
<< CONTINUED from Page 4
Councilwoman Linda Harp
said county residents already
pay too many taxes. She said
local governments need to control spending rather than increase taxes, and she would
vote against the measure.
“Twenty dollars doesn’t seem
like much. I spend more than
that on coffee a month,” Harp
said. “But there are people in
this county who cannot afford
another raise in their taxes.
That’s money that goes towards
gas and food for some.”
Commissioner Josh Francis
said the county hasn’t increased
its overall spending in eight
years, but the cost of goods and
services has dramatically increased in that time.
He said the county isn’t overspending, and the only way
make up the budget shortfall is
to increase revenue.
“All of (the elected officials)
here are going to be paying the
same new tax that everyone
else is,” Francis said. “It’s not
like we’re exempt from it. We’re
going to feel it, too. But we also
know from our side of things
that we have a responsibility to
run this county, and without
the income, we can’t do it.”
Council President Ralph
Duckwall said he didn’t like the
idea of instituting a new tax,
but he said it may be the only
way to keep the county running.
“Personally, as a conservative,
it pains me to do this,” he said. “
… But we’re between a rock
and a hard place. If we increase
the tax, will we inhibit growth?
If we don’t increase it, will we
still be able to offer basic services?”
The council considered implementing a highway-user tax
eight years ago, but voted down
the measure.
Forty-nine counties currently
have a wheel tax, including
Howard, Tipton and Cass counties.
The council is set to vote on
instituting the new tax during
its regular meeting at 7 p.m.
Tuesday.

pay raises
BY CARSON GERBER
MC WEEKLY
City employees and elected
officials are set to receive a
1.5 percent pay raise next
year after city council approved the increase last
week.
City Clerk-Treasurer Jackie
Gray said the raise will cost
in total an additional $64,000.
This will be the second
time workers received a raise
in two years. Employees and
elected officials received a
1.5-percent pay increase during this year’s budget.
