SPEAKING OF
Sanctuary Of Love
And Caring for
Everyone
2016 Volume 1
We Are
I am 22 years old and have moved all over - several houses, thirteen
different schools - and to be honest, this is the first time I have ever felt
safe! Here in the SOLACE House, it is also the first time I have ever
felt at home. It’s a beautiful place and such an amazing thing FASI
does for us victims of domestic violence. Now I know I can come home
every day and not worry about any harm or danger coming my way. I
can come home to my family and we can be ourselves for the first time
in forever. We can actually be who we are, I can let my boys play and
not be afraid of them being kids. I am so grateful we found this organization. I might’ve had to go down a horrible road just to get here but it
doesn’t matter anymore because HERE is home. We feel loved here.
Being a part of such a wonderful program and wonderful home, being
around such amazing people who we can confide in - I couldn’t imagine
anything else! We didn’t just find a safe house and FRIENDS, we found
a FAMILY and a home. For the first time in twenty years I can honestly
say I am happy! I am blessed to be in this program.

"What you can do, we cannot do and what we can do, you
cannot do, but together we can do something beautiful."
Mother Teresa
Dear Friends,
“Faith”….. My one word that sums it all up as
I look back over our progress in 2015 as well as
what lies ahead in 2016! With the significant
number of recent changes, I often pause to
remind myself of something Franklin D. Roosevelt once said,
“The only limit to our realization of
tomorrow will be our doubts of today.
Let us move forward with strong
and active faith.”
2015 was a year of change but faith has been, and continues to be,
what keeps us moving forward! And hearing from those that have gone
through our program and moved on to a safe and independent life, lets me
know we are doing the right things.
First and foremost, our clients continue to have faith in us and we
must not let them down. They trust that if or when the need arises, we are
there to assist them and their family. The increase in cases of domestic
violence within the celebrity population has brought with it the much needed increase of awareness and recognition of unacceptable, abusive behavior.
Secondly, I personally placed a great deal of faith in all those that
volunteered their time throughout the year. I wasn’t sure at the start of the
year how we were going to make it happen. But when we needed assistance, all we had to do was ask! From our hotline volunteers to our annual
Blues Festival workers, from our contractors to our talented board members, the hours you donated made a significant impact on our progress with
our new facility and services we provide to our clients. We are grateful to
you for your selfless desire to help fulfill our mission!
Lastly, we put a huge amount of faith in the community when it
came to raising the funds required to make SOLACE a safe and welcoming
home for our victims of abuse. You did not let us down! Our local businesses, churches and many individual contributors rose to the challenge and
with it came furniture & appliances, a solid security system, furnishings
and repair work needed just to open our doors.
As we look ahead to 2016, we know there is still much more to be
done, both at SOLACE and expanding on our services. But we will move
forward with ‘strong and active faith.’
Cindy Fogg, Former Chair (2015)
LIFE AFTER SOLACE
You touch so many lives and have given me so much.
How do you thank people for just being themselves? Without your strength, knowledge, and guidance, I would not be
out of my living hell. I’ll never forget the first day I came to
the FASI office and safe house. I was so scared….angry…..
hopeless, etc. Each of you just kept being yourselves and
with that, you re-gave me strength and belief in myself.
Therefore, I give all of you these words as a visual reminder
of all that you are and give.
Thank you and hope you know this comes from my
heart.
-- Former FASI Client
Family Abuse Services, Inc. is dedicated to breaking the cycle of
family violence. To be clear, family violence includes children and
the elderly, men and women and domestic partners. Through the
SOLACE House, FASI offers safe, temporary housing for those
who are forced to flee their home to escape violence. We coordinate with other community agencies to ensure that victims receive the counseling, care and services they so desperately need.
FASI is often confused with other organizations that offer temporary housing, such as shelters for the homeless. While these shelters certainly have a very important role to play in our society,
FASI is not a shelter as safe housing is just one of the many services our organization provides.
Our Solace House remains full or nearly full as the demand is
great. Clients come to us from our hotline referral, the court
system, hospitals, neighboring counties and from out of state. We
have a committed, passionate staff, backed by a strong board who
are ready to go to work to fulfill our mission. Fleeing an abuser
takes courage, and at times, a great deal of planning. We cannot
turn away someone who has finally made the decision and taken
the first step toward breaking free from the cycle of violence.
I am excited to take on my new role as Board Chair after serving on the FASI Board for the past 2 1/2 years. I have become
acutely aware of the cycle of violence that exists all around us
today. While I know it has always been there, perhaps I just
didn't know to what extent violence exists within our community.
But, now that I have come face to face with those who have been
abused, looked into the eyes of someone hurting, heard their stories and have seen firsthand the bruises and felt their fear, I can
tell you Frankfort, Georgetown, Lawrenceburg, Shelbyville and
surrounding areas, we have a problem and you can help.

Ann Morse, Chair
Month after month our HOTLINE Volunteers devote their time to respond
to the emergency phone calls we receive. Having a 24-hour crisis hotline
for domestic violence victims is of
great importance. Being able to continuously rely on our volunteers to be
prepared and ready to help our callers
(usually at the last minute) is truly
something for which we are grateful!.
We appreciate all you do !
The MUTUALITY OF GIVING AND SERVING
GRATITUDE
To every client who called and asked for our
help—to every victim who had the courage to leave
and ask us for a safe place to live—for every person
who trusted us, believed we could help, listened to
our words of encouragement and kept growing—to
all those who stepped out with blind faith hoping
everything would be okay—to the many women,
men, and children who walked the halls of our safe
house and allowed it to become a home—we want to
say thank you!
In our last newsletter
we were seeking new
office space. Thanks to
our readers who passed
the word along, we
were able to find a
perfect office location
at 231 Hanna Place
We would like to share
our gratitude to David
Vaughn of Frankfort
Realty for being so
helpful and kind to our
organization.
We are grateful you gave us the opportunity to
serve you. Thank you for putting your trust in us.
A mile in FASI’S ShoeS ….
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his [her] point of view... Until
you climb inside of his [her] skin and walk around in it.”
- from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Let’s face it…... it feels good to do something for someone else. Whether you pat yourself on the back for
doing a ‘good deed’ for the day, or you feel you’re doing what God has asked of you, or you’re just the kind of person who likes to pay it forward. For myriad reasons we do things for other people. Family Abuse Services is no
different. At one point several years ago, a few people decided that something must be done to help the individuals in Franklin County who are seeking to escape domestic violence……..and thus, this organization was born.
Every year the opportunities to help more people continue to grow.
There is mutuality in giving and serving others. As the giver, we tend to think it is the receiver who
should be and is most grateful, but in the end, the giver receives a measure of joy and satisfaction all their own.
This newsletter is dedicated to how grateful we are for the many donators who gave to FASI throughout 2015, but
we also want to dedicate this newsletter to the clients who gave us the opportunity to help them, teach them a new
way to move forward, and allowed us to be the safe place to turn when the life they were living was absent of safety
and security.

The Capital City Blues and River Festival, which is our largest fundraiser, was a huge success this past
August! The weather was beautiful the entire evening. A new venture for FASI this year was our Daytime Vendor Fair. We owe a huge shout out to Melissa Bybee-Fields
(our former Volunteer Coordinator). She did a fabulous effort organizing and overseeing this daytime activity.
The evening events began as early
as 5:00 with attendees coming in to
set up their camping chairs, food, coolers, and get ready for an evening of
Blues music, BBQ, fun, and chillin’ out
on the river. This year we had a unique
opening band. A great group of local
talent, including Mayor Bill May, Bobby Redding, Video Dave Rodgers, Dr.
Brad Chase, Matty Rodgers, Dan Eaton, Bill VanArsdale and Ron Lucus, came together earlier in the year
to form the band Catfish Alley. The headliner band, Toad Strangler, returned this year from Bowling
Green to perform some incredible Blues with a touch of rock n roll.
The Frankfort Police Department came out to grill burgers and brats and Staxx provided their
delicious barbeque.
Then to sweeten up the evening, we
had a delicious array of desserts to
be auctioned off - everything from
Blueberry Cake to Cherry Pie to
Cream Horns and Cannoli's. Lastly,
we had an incredible silent auction
with something unique for all of our
bidders - artwork from Keeneland,
UK Basketball and Football tickets,
a Trifecta Package from Churchill Downs and over 15
other items.
We are grateful to the many people who came out to support Family Abuse Services. Because of
your participation and devotion, we were able to raise money to help us continue serving this community.
Join us this year for another go ‘round….. on Saturday, August 27th, 2016 we will be back on the river
again. Tickets are $25 and tables for eight remain $250. We’ve got several food options and encourage
you to purchase your food at the festival as all proceeds will be
donated to benefit FASI. Looking forward to seeing all of you
there.

A Most UNUSUAL Request
Occasionally we have a client who has
done everything right! They’ve worked
hard, put forth 110% in every effort,
maintained employment, a positive attitude, followed the SOLACE program,
refrains from drugs and alcohol, makes
many positive changes, etc. Yet there
remains one or two challenges that keep
preventing complete success. We currently have one such individual. This
person is in immediate need of a reliable
vehicle. We realize this is quite a large
request, but if you, or someone you
know would be willing to donate a
vehicle to help this client, we would
greatly appreciate it and it would help
ensure their continued success. Thank
you for keeping this request in mind.
