Summer is finally upon us. And with it come not only
family activities but also community events that Hercules
residents look forward to enjoying at this time of year.
There are lots of things happening, so fasten your seats
belts Hercules!
Summer Festivities
We start off with a big bang - the 27th Annual Cultural
Fair to be held on Saturday, June 4th and Sunday, June
5th • It's the eventthat brings out the best in our community:
working together, enjoying each other's company, relishing
the delicious international culinary treats, listening to great
entertainment, and just plain relaxing.
The following weekend, Saturday, June 11 th is PI2005,
the 5th annual festival celebrating the Philippine
independence day. This free event for the whole family
will be held at the Community Swim Center from 11 a.rn.
The summer wouldn't be complete without the July 4'"
Independence Day festivities. This year's parade
promises to outdo last year's event so don't miss out.
After the parade, there will be activities for everyone at
Refugio Park, and we will continue to have the evening
fireworks at the waterfront. Special thanks to the Hercules
Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the celebrations.
Refugio Lake Restoration
These summer events will be more enjoyable now that
the city has completed the process of restoring the lake to
its original depth. This involved dredging and removing
years of accumulated silt that had decreased the depth
from 20 feet to about a foot in some places that encouraged
weed growth and diminished the fish population. The
city is committed to assuring that Refugio Park and the
lake will continue to be the centerpiece ofthe community's
outdoor recreation facilities.
Hercules Library
After many years of planning, there is finally daylight at
the end of the tunnel. The Hercules Library project has
finally taken on a new dimension: the bulldozers are on
their way, and the actual construction is about to begin!
For starters, on May 14, 2005 we held the official
groundbreaking at the building site that was attended by
many of you in the community. Construction will finally
begin this summer.
What made this possible? Through a state voter-approved
funding, Hercules was one of only two Bay Area cities,
among dozens who applied, that submitted and received

Hercules Community Library Foundation
Hercules Library Coming Soon!
The ground breaking for the Hercules Community Library was held May 14. Construction will take about 18 months
and our dream will become a reality.
With construction set to stalt this summer, our attention has turned to fundraising. In fact, representatives from local
non-profit groups have been meeting to plan and organize fun and exciting fundraising events. These fundraising
workshops are held at City Hall, the first Saturday of each month. Everyone is welcome; workshops start at 9:00am
and provide a relaxed and positive atmosphere to exchange ideas, give input, and to become involved.
There are many great ways you can help the library, from used book sales sponsored by the Friends of the Hercules
Library to proceeds from Barnes and Noble; children's artwork or a casino night. Watch for the Hercules Leo's
Children's Tile Project. An array of exciting events is in progress.
The Friends of the Library have committed the proceeds from their book sales to buy books for the new library. Be
certain to stop by the Friends of the Hercules Library Cultural Festival booth to shop at their special "Summer
Reader Book Sale". The next Friends Used Book Sale will be Saturday, September 24, at Hercules City Hall.
Want new books to add to your summer reading library? Perhaps pre-order the new Harry Potter book? Shop at
Barnes & Noble, located at 4000 Klose Way, Richmond (by Hilltop Mall) on Saturday, June 18 (the day before
Father's Day) and present the special Hercules Library voucher to the cashier. 15% of your purchase price will be
donated to the library. Please use the voucher between 10:00am and 2:00pm in order to credit the library.
The Hercules Community Library Foundation has created a website, www.herculeslibrary.com. that provides
detailed information about how you can become an active library supporter: attend fundraising events (check the
Events Calendar), donate books to the Friends Used Book Sales (use donation box located in the photo department
at Albertsons), shop the Barnes & Noble event on June 18 (use the Hercules Library voucher), come to an Authors
and Lecture Series, have your group sponsor an event, fill out a pledge card, and/or designate the Hercules
Community Library Foundation, Inc. for matching United Way contributions.

Hercules High School Interact Club
Club Says Goodbye To Current Officers
Graduation Day, June 11,2005, will represent the end of an era for the Hercules High School Interact Club, the on
campus community service club. It will also represent a new beginning.
When Hercules Middle High School opened in September 2001, the Interact Club was one of the fIrst clubs
formed on campus. The four young ladies who started the club were juniors at the time and had transferred from
Pinole Valley High School. Each graduated in June 2003 and went on to college. One oftheir legacies, as
founders, was to encourage underclass students to join the Interact Club. This year, the Interact Club will say
goodbye to its current offIcers, each of whom have been in the Club for 3 to 4 years.

During these four years, the Interact Club has grown to become one of the largest clubs on campus. This past
school year, the Club had over 50 active members, many of whom were freshmen or sophomores. It is from this
group that the new leaders will emerge.
The Interact Club's primary mission is to perform community service proj ects. The members participated in both
large and small projects throughout the school year. Twice this past year, Club members helped the Friends ofthe
Hercules Library set up for their book sale, assisted the Christmas Coalition by having a gift-wrapping paper drive,
decorated and staffed Santa's Workshop at the City's Annual Tree Lighting Event, and wrapped gifts forthe
children whom the Coalition serves. Last Fall, Interact Club members helped the Rotary Club with the distribution
of dictionaries to the 3rd grade students in Rodeo and
Hercules. Members also participated in the City's
Annual Clean-up Day. A few Club members made
holiday cards for the residents ofthe Rodeo Home for
the Elderly.
The major fundraisers for the Interact Club included
working at the Crab Feeds hosted by the Rotary Club
of Hercules and the Rodeo Chamber of Commerce.
With some of these funds, the Club made a contribution
to the RotalY International's South Asia Tsunami Relief
Fund, and made a contribution to the Rotary's
Dictionary Fund.

Contra Costa County Mosquito and Vector Control Board
Are You Prep'a red for West Nne Virus?
West Nile virus made its debut in Contra Costa County
last year. This year, the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector
Control District (District) continues to fight against the
spread ofthis mosquito-borne disease. Working together
with homeowners and the community, the District is
committed to reducing the risk of contracting the disease
that last year claimed the lives of28 Southern California
residents as well as 230 horses.
Experts predict that Northern California will be the focus
for West Nile virus this year. West Nile Virus (WNV) is a
viral infection of birds that is spread from bird to bird by
mosquitoes. Humans, horses, and other animals can
become infected with the virus when infected mosquitoes
bite them.
Some people infected with West Nile virus may develop
West Nilefever. The symptoms may range from mild to
severe flu-like symptoms such as headache and fever to a
polio-like illness that includes partial paralysis. Anyone
can contract the disease, but persons over the age of 50
are more likely to develop serious illness from West Nile
virus~
for more than a couple of days, such as un-maintained
swimming pools, backyard ornamental ponds, discarded
tires, clogged rain gutters, pool and boat covers, flower
pots, toys, etc.

Not all birds will be picked up and tested, but reporting
dead birds is important information for mosquito control
efforts.

* Vaccinate hotses~ Nearly half of the horses that
contract WNV die or are put down.
* Visit the n.istrict to obtain FREE mosquitofish for
backyard. ponds and horse troughs. Mosquitofish
eat up to'5 00 larvae each day.

and skunks. No charge to Contra Costa County residents
and business owners.
Contra. Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District has
been protecting public health for nearly 80 years. This
year we have doubled our workforce and tripled our
education personnel to combat West Nile virus; however,
every resident plays a crucial part in helping to reduce
their risk ofcontracting WNV by not breeding mosquitoes
in their yards. Backyards are the number one source of
mosquitoes in Contra Costa County.

Piano Recital
At 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, July 26 t\ piano students will
be perfonning at their joyous annual Summer Recital at
the Hercules Senior Center. All are welcome to attend for
the lovely classical music.
Cannen Li has been teaching piano in Hercules for twelve
years. She is a member ofthe National Guild of Piano
Teachers and can qualify her students to take tests for
higher levels ofachievement. In 2004, the first place award
was given to one of her students at the Scholarship
Competition for Club Mendelssohn. Cannen and her
students have held annual recitals which are not only
entertaining, but also encouraging for the students and
greatly enjoyed by the seniors. Cannen Li's husband,
John Tam, is a piano repair and tuning professional who
has offered free piano tuning to those who have hosted
Cannen's piano recitals.

City Council Recognizes Officer
EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS
In the midst of a large scale emergency such as an
earthquake there is a limited supply of resources. Often
stores are closed, gas pumps may not operate, ATMs may
not work, and emergency personnel are taxed beyond their
capabilities. Phone lines may not work and you might have
to fend for yourself for days, if not weeks.
Are you prepared?
It is our hope that you already have your emergency

At the April 26, 2005 meeting, the Hercules City Council
recognized Officer Audrey Lake for her actions in saving
a PG&E employee who was being mauled by a large dog
earlier this year. The incident occurred when Officer Lake
was on patrol on the afternoon of March 16 th in the area
of Pheasant Drive, and saw a man on the ground being
attacked by a large dog. The dog, a Bull Mastiffweighing
over 120 pounds, held a secure bite grip on the upper thigh
of the victim, a PG&E meter reader making his rounds.
The dog was violently shaking the victim when Officer
Lake arrived. She tried to distract the dog by striking it in
the head several times with her night stick, however, this
had no effect. Officer Lake finally incapacitated the animal
by shooting it with her police firearm. She then performed
[lfst aid on the injured man and summoned an ambulance.
The victim sustained serious injuries to his leg and was
taken by ambulance to a local hospital. He is recovering
from wounds that could have been life-threatening had
Officer Lake not arrived when she did.
Officer Lake was commended in a Proclamation from the
City Council for her courage as well as her swift and
appropriate use of force, under extremely stressful
circumstances.

Section 4-2.01 of the Hercules Municipal Code states:
"No person shall use, discharge or carry for use or
discharge any air gun, pistol or any other firearm or
weapon or any sling shot within the City of Hercules. "
Shooting or carrying bb or pellet guns is against the law in
Hercules. Even more important, carrying or displaying one
of these weapons could result in unnecessary violence and
harm if it is mistaken for a real firearm.
Parents should think twice before allowing your child to
acquire or possess look-alike firearms . Children should
only be allowed to use them under the supervision of an
adult and in a location where legal.

Local Youths Named "Police Officer for a Day"
Chief Fred Deltorchio swears in Shirley Marshall and Alex Escalada as Police Officers for a Day
On March 30th, the Hercules Police Department welcomed two new members to the force. St. Patrick Elementary
School students Shirley Marshall and Alex Escalada became Police Officers for a Day. After taking their oath of
office and receiving their certificates of appointment, Shirley and Alex took a tour of the department and were issued
their equipment for the day. They briefed with fellow officers and after reviewing pictures of a local wanted person,
Shirley commented, "J want to take her down."
Before the end of their shift, Officers Shirley and Alex did, indeed, locate and arrest the wanted persons they saw in
the pictures. After booking their suspects, Shirley and Alex were treated to an authentic cop meal: Cheeseburgers
and fries. Neither showed any interest in the box ofKrispy Kreme donuts which accompanied their lunch.
It was a fun and educational experience for everyone, whether cops for a day or cops everyday!

The Hercules City Council is currently recruiting residents to fill the following two
vacancies on the City'S Education and Community Services Commissions:

Rental Facilities
FACILITY RENTALS
Whether you are hosting a wedding reception, birthday party,
or any other special occasion, the Hercules Recreation and
Community Services Department invites you to share your
precious moments in any of our available facilities. WELCOME!
For detailed information on rental fees, date availability, and
application procedures please call (510) 799-8291 . You may
pick up a facility rental application at the Community/Swim
Center during normal business hours. Reservations will be
received on a first come, first serve basis. Reservations will
also be taken no more than one year in advance, and no less
than one month prior to the event date.
The following is a list of facilities we have available:
Foxboro Community Center: Located at 1025 Canterbury
Avenue. Maximum capacity of 48. One small assembly room ,
restrooms , large outdoor park area, tennis and basketball
courts. This facility does not have kitchen facilities.
Ohlone Community Center: Located at 190 Turquoise Drive,
adjacent to Ohlone Park. Maximum capacity of 75. One
medium size assembly room, residential kitchen, outdoor patio
and indoor/outdoor restrooms.
Hercules Senior Center: Located at 111 Civic Drive, adjacent
to the City Hall Civic Center Plaza. Maximum capacity of
100. One large assembly room, includes kitchen, lobby area,
outdoor patio area with BBQ, restrooms and parking .
Hercules Community/Swim Center: Located at 2001 Refugio
Valley Road. Maximum capacity of 300. One large assembly
room, stage, two multi-purpose rooms, commercial kitchen, lobby
area, outdoor patio area, restrooms and parking.
Community Center Gymnasium: Available for volleyball/
basketball rentals for private games of individuals or company
events! Indudes sports equipment, portable bleachers, restrooms,
outdoor patio area and parking. For games/toumaments insurance
is required .
Refugio Valley Park Gazebo: Good for outdoor weddings.
Scenic view with easy access. Electricity available, rental does
not indude tables or chairs.
Woodfield, Ohlone, and Hanna Ballfield Rentals: Available
for private or company rentals. There is a two hour minimum on
all field rentals. Rental of the fields does not include sports
equipment or field preparations.

NEW POLICY FORINFLATABLE
STRUCTURES AT CITY PARKS
A reservation is required to use any Inflatable Play Structures
(JUMPERS) in all Hercules Parks. Reservation pennitsand park site
maps may be acquired through the Hercules Parks and Recreation
Department (510) 799-8291 . Inflatable play structures Uumpers) and
their associated generators are only allowed in the designated lawn
areas, from 10:00am through 6:00pm under the following conditions:
1. A maximum of two (2) inflatable play structures Uumpers) allowed
per park per day.
2. They must be rented from a company that has a minimum
$1 ,000,000 commercial general liability insurance. The rental
company's insurance agent must provide to the City, prior to your
event, a certificate of insurance that shows the City of Hercules as
an "additional insured" for the park and then date of the event. All
rental guidelines regarding use of the jumper must be followed .
3. You must provide adult supervision of jumper use at all times.
4. Inflatable play structures Uumpers) require electriCity to operate.
Please arra nge with your rental company before the date of your
event, the city does not provide generators or electricity. Where
portable generators are used, please ensure that the generator and
inflatable play structures uumper) are located within the designated
lawn area.
5. The rental company must install the inflatable play structure
Uumper) without driving a motorized vehide into the park. They will
need to use a cart, hand-truck or similar method of transportation.
6. The inflatable play structures Uumpers) must be placed on the
designated grass area and situated so that its entrance is at least
eight (8) feet away from any Object that might hurt an occupant who
falls out. The maximum space allowed for the inflatable play
structures Uumpers) is 20' x 20'. For safety reasons, inflatable play
structures Uumper) should no be located on hard surfaces (such as
concrete). Be sure that you have en extension cord long enough to
cover the required distance and do not plan to lay an extension cord
across a sidewalk or pathway.
7. During anytime of the event City staff may check your set-up and
may ask you to move your inflatable play structures Uumper) and/or
your portable generator to a different location, please cooperate with
them
8. Inflatable play structures Uumpers) are not allowed in parks
ovemight.
9. In case of emergency or injury, call 911 . The Parks and Recreation
Department office hours are Monday through Thursday 1O:OOam6:00pm and Fridays 10:00am - 5:00pm. Outside of these hours you
can call the same number and leave a message. For problems outside
of normal work hours please call (510) 799-8297 or (510) 812-7580,
they will contact the appropriate party for response. If there is no
answer please leave a message with nature of the problem and what
park you're located in.

This is a research based, developmentally appropriate music
and movement curriculum designed for newborns through
preschoolers and the adults who love them! The program
allows children to participate at their own levels in mixed age
classes. Classes are informal and filled with child-like play to
encourage experimentation. Families are encouraged to
experience music through songs, rhythm chants, fingerplays,
movement, dance and instrument play, including a free-choice
play along jam session where parents and children experiment .

BALLROOM DANCE CLASS
MACARENA PLUS INDIAN
DANCE FOR ALL AGES
The first half of each 90 minute class will be devoted to a
smooth dance (foxtrot, waltz, etc.); the second half a latin
dance (cha cha, mambo, rumba , etc.). These classes are
designed for beginner to low-intermediate students and will
focus on basic steps and patterns, as well as technique, styling
and proper dance etiquette. Classes are taught by Barbara
Corey, who has been teaching dance and exercise classes in
Southern CA and the East Bay Area for the past 23 years.
She is certified through Irvine Valley College, AFAA and is a
member of IDEA (International Dance Exercise Association).
Registration must be complete by the Friday before the first
Class starts with yoga stretch and ends with cool down. Learn
basic arm, hip and neck movement, footwork and hand gestures
of Macarena and Indian dance .· Students should wear
comfortable clothing or hula skirt and veil (which can be
purchased from instructor). Also learn how to wear a Sari
(Indian dress). All fitness levels are welcome. No experience

Financial Assistance from the VA for Health Care and Daily
Living Assistance. Qualifying Veterans can apply for a wide
range of health and long term services. In a nutshell, VA Aid
and Assistance helps veterans and surviving spouses who
require regular help with eating, dressing, bathing, toileting
and medications. To obtain assistance you must have at least
two of these requirements to qualify. Qualified Veterans are
those who are a war veteran with 90 days of active duty, one
day at the beginning or ending during a period of war. Asurviving

SUMMER ACADEMIC CAMP
These group sessions are designed to meet the needs of
students grades K-12th and help them get a headstart on the
upcoming school year! Classes will be held 2 hours each
session , 1 day per week forfour weeks. Students are required
to takes notes during each session, reponsible for homework
assigned, and they are given a test after each chapter. Supply
list for class: Pencils, erasers, paper, and spiral notebook.

HERCULES LIBRARY
CONNECTION!
The City of Hercules has commenced a limited library service
that is now available to Hercules residents. Residents are
now able to pick up reserved books in the Computer Center,
located at the Hercules Community/Swim Center. Library
cardholders will have access to library databases, the collection
of the County Library system via two new computer terminals;
search the Internet and request materials. All requested
materials are sent to the Community/Swim Center site for
pick up. A new library book drop has now been installed and
is open 24 hours outside the Community Center. Look for
details about the availability of this exciting new service as
they become available on the Contra Costa County Library's
home page (www.ccclib.org), on flyers at nearby branch
libraries and at the Hercules Swim Center. For more

The TeenIYouth Council is busy helping with Community
Activities and Events. Our active Teens and Youths are
demonstrating leadership skills, teamwork through their
I participation in such events as making presentations and
reports to our City Council and Community Service
Commission. Some of the current citywide events and
projects the TeenIYouth Council are working on are building
a TEEN CENTER, The Senior Citizens Pre-Mother Day
Luncheon/Fashion Show, TYC Haunted House, Summer
Just Kickin' It Leadership/Theatrical/Summer Camp, 27th
Annual Cultural Festival, T.Y.C. Concession Stand, and
much more. This successful program recruits active members
from the Hercules Middle/High School and Hercules residents.
If you enjoy working in your community and are great with
making decisions for your peers, this is the program for you.
All members must be 6th-12th graders, a resident of Hercules
or attending the Hercules Middle/High School. If you are
interested in getting to know more about the TeenIYouth
Council, you may attend our meetings held at the Hercules
TeenfYouth Resource Center, 2001 Refugio Valley Road,
Hercules, on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from
3:00pm-4:00pm (during the school year). Due to the popularity
of this innovative group, we are currently enlisting City of
Hercules teen and youth volunteers. If interested, you can
join now and apply for membership for the next term of
September 1, 2004 through August 31 , 2005.
TIle T.Y.C. will be participating in several events, including:

TEEN BOYS BASKETBALL
LEAGUE 13-16 YEAR OLDS
PEE WEE BASKETBALL LEAGUE
7-9 YEAR OLDS
The league is open to boys ages 13 to 16 years old with beginner
to advanced skill levels. The Teen Basketball program is
designed to teach and improve the basic fundamentals of
basketball, with an emphasis on sportsmanship and having
fun! The program is created to introduce beginning participants
to dribbling, shooting, passing and rebounding skills, as well
as improving hand-eye coordination. More experienced players
should improve in each of these skills. League fees include
the following: a team shirt, coaching staff, practice periods, a
round of league games and playoffs, referees, and awards at
the conclusion of the playoffs.
The Pee Wee Basketball program is designed to teach and
improve the basic fundamentals of basketball, with an emphasis
on sportsmanship and having fun! The program is created to
introduce beginning participants to dribbling, shooting, passing
and rebounding skills , as well as improving hand-eye
coordination. More experienced players should improve in
each of these skills. League fees include the following: a

a copy of their birth certificate at the time of registration.
Tryouts will be held for the (80) eighty players on Monday 06/
13 & Tuesday 06/14, of the participant registered practice time.
It will then be decided which practice session of either Monday
and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday practice session
the participant would be placed on. Playoff games will be
played during Wednesdays.
The league needs a minimum enrollment of 32 participants
and a maximum of 80 players will be allowed . Practice times
are listed below. Most games will be played on Friday evenings
and Saturday mornings, with each team usually playing one
game per week, with the exception of playoff week. There
will be an informational meeting to discuss the rules
and regulations on Friday, June 10, 2005 at 6:30pm at
the Community/Swim Center.

a minimum of 40 participants enrolled to run the league, and a
maximum of 80 participants will be admitted. There will be
a Parent/Coach informational meeting to discuss the
rules and regulations on Friday, September 9, 2005 at
6:30 p.m. at the Community/Swim Center. Please plan
on attending this meeting.
There will be four practice sessions offered. Practices will be
held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00-5: 15pm, 5:006:15pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:00-5: 15pm, and
5:00-6:15pm . Games will be played on Fridays and on
Saturdays momings, with each team usually playing one game
per week. All Playoff games will be played during

"EXPANDED HORIZONS"
SUMMER BASKETBALL FUN!
This camp "Expanded Horizons" will provide a comprehensive
fundamentals oriented basketball experience! Targeting youths
in the Hercules community and immediate areas. Instruction
will include drill stations, classroom discussion and later
incorporate scrimmages and game situational play. The camp
will last five days and be limited to the first 40 participants who
sign-up. Participants will be provided with a T-Shirt and a

Pee-Wee Tennis is a comprehensive program designed to

rewarding way. By tailoring the equipment and size of the
playing courts to the size, needs and athletic ability of children,
the Pee-Wee Tennis program allows to learn the sport quickly

and Community Services Department is forming a Fall Softball
League, being held at Fernandez Park. The Men's "0" Softball
League is designed for men ages 18 and older. Participants
must register as a complete team and must have a team
roster when submitting registration fees. Maximum roster
size is 16, with a minimum of 12 players. The league is
sanctioned by the United States Slow-Pitch Softball
Association and USSSA rules regarding what constitutes a
Men's "0" level team would apply. All umpires will be certified.
League fees includes staff, league games, single game
elimination playoffs (top four teams make playoffs), umpires,
utility costs, insurance rates, team registration (USSSA), shirts
for the champions of the playoffs and trophies for 1st place
finishers during regular season play.

This program is designed to provide competitive table tennis
action for all youth/adults who want to improve their knowledge
and skill of the game. The tennis tables used are approved by
the U.S. Table Tennis Association and the International Table
Tennis Federation . Join the crowd for this exciting program for
an annual membership fee and drop-in pass. For more

GY MNASIUM FOR RENT
Now you can rent the Community/Swim Center Gymnasium
for Basketball or Volleyball practices, games and/or business
recreational games! The gym is available on a limited basis.
Reservations will only be accepted with a completed
application and payment for the hours rented. Applicants must
be at least 21 years of age. All contact regarding the
reservations , fees, rental time and on site coordination will be
arranged with the original applicant only.
An attendant will be present during the entire event. Adult
supervision is required by applicant during the event. Applicants
interested in renting the gym are encouraged to view the facility
prior to renting. The gym has a maximum capacity of 100
persons for a sports event.
*Standard rental includes the main room with two (2) portable
basketball units or two (2) volleyball units, portable bleachers

PUBLIC SWIM
The Hercules Swim Center is open to the public for playing, working
out, diving, or lounging around the pool side in a beautiful outdoor
setting. The Hercules Aquatic staff are certified by the American Red
Cross and are fully trained in the supervision of aquatic activities,
lifeguard training, first aid, CPR, and rescue situations.
We ask that all participants of the public swim sessions be fully
knowledgeable about our pool rules as listed below:
• All entries to the pool and deck areas must be paid admissions,
including nonswimmers and chaperones.
• Children, 9 years and under, must be accompanied by an adult at
least sixteen years or older at all times.
• There is a fifteen (15) minute rest period on all weekend public
swim sessions from 3:45 to 4:00 p.m. All partiCipants under the age
of eighteen are required to exit the water area and remain on the lawn
or deck area.
• Flotation devices such as inner tubes, water wings, noodles, air
mattresses, etc. are not permitted in the pool areas. Only Coast
Guard approved flotation devices are allowed with adultsupervision.
• Full face masks, snorkels, and diving fins are not permitted in the
pool areas.
" Diving toys, coins, water guns, etc. are not permitted in the pool
areas.
"NO FOOD ALLOWED
• Public swim sessions are subject to early closure after the first hour
of operation due to poor weather and/or if attendance drops below 25
participants. There are no refunds for canceled swim sessions.
• Proper swim attire is required. No cutoffs andlor leotards or
street clothing.
• Pool rules are posted on the deck areas surrounding the pool areas
and are necessary for the safety of all participants. Participants must
obey posted rules and oral instructions from Aquatic Staff at all times.
• It is requested that patrons be sensitive to the needs of parents to
change their young children of the opposite sex in the locker room
areas.
• No photographic equipment permitted.

Capacity Days - On extremely hot days we anticipate
reaching maximum capacity at which tirne the pool will be
closed for the remainder of the day. On hot days we
encourage residents to come to the swim center early, in
order to ensure admittance. Parties who are not registered
with the swim center will not be allowed to admit guests
after we close our doors. We will not allow patrons to reenter the facility once the doors have closed.
Attendance Policy - The swim center will remain open for
the first hour of public swim operation. If after the first hour
of operation the attendance has not reached 25 patrons the
public swim session will close. If at any time during the
public swim session the attendance drops below 25 patrons,
the pool will close. "Refunds will not be given if the pool
closes because of lack of attendance.
Bathing Suit Policy - Only patrons wearing appropriate
bathing suit attire will be admitted into the facility. We do
not allow patrons to swim in jeans, cutoffs, t-shirts ,
undergarments, etc. Please ask the cashier if you have
any questions on your swimming attire before entering the
facility. All children under the age of 4 are required to wear
swimming diapers, children under the age of 4 will not be
admitted into the pool without a swimming diaper. "Refunds
will not be given to patrons who are not wearing
appropriate swim attire.
No Food Policy - The Hercules Swim Center will no longer
allow patrons to bring food into the facility. The Concession
Stand will be open and soda machines are available.
• Swim Diapers Required! Swim diapers are available for purchase.
Weather Conditions/Lightning - If lightning is spotted,
the swim center will be closed immediately!

Due to popular demand , we are expanding our special time
period just for parents and toddlers to enjoy the play pool
without the hustle and bustle of large groups, and/or older
participants. Parents may practice swim instruction techniques
learned in the ParentllnfantIToddler Instructional Class or just
enjoy a quiet swim time with their children. This swim session
is restricted to children between the ages of six (6) months
and three (3) years of age. All children must be accompanied

CLASS
The ParentllnfanVToddler program is designed to assist parents
in introducing their children, ages 6 months up to 3 years of age,
to water play and pre-swimming skills. The course is designed to
create an enjoyable, non-threatening environment which allows
parents to actively participate with their children in the leaming of
water skills. This course is an ideal entry level program which
begins to prepare your child for swim instruction as he/she grows
into more advanced level classes. The ParentllnfantIToddlerprogram
is composed of eight 1/2 hour classes, and will be held over a two
week period; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, Friday.
Children are required to wear tight fitting swim pants.

SAFETY PERSONNEL
The purpose of this course is to meet the specialized First Aid
and CPR Training requirements of the CalifomiaAdministrative
Code - Title 22 required for Lifeguards, Police Officers, and Fire
Fighters. This course will provide these First Responders with
the knowledge and skills they need to help sustain life until more
advanced help arrives. The course contains five (5) units. Students
must successfully complete every unit to become certified.

The City of Hercules will be offering a recreational swim team during the 2005 season. This program is designed for participants ages
5 to 18 who will be eligible to participate in all sanctioned practices, dinics, invitational meets, and monthly socials.

are designed to have a maximum enrollment of six (6) students per class in
order to provide increased instruction time by each instructor. This lesson
program is ideal for adutts of all ages who never leamed to swim orwho may
have a limited aquatic background. TheAdutt sessions will be oomposed of
eight, 1/2 hour classes, and will be held over a two week period; Mondayl
Tuesday &Thursday/Friday (4-days per week). Pre-registration is mandatory
forall adutt classes and we encourage early registration due to the popularity
of the adult lesson program. The registration deadline for adutt lessons is the

SWIM INSTRUCTION LEVELS
FOR ALL AGES
Are you or your family members fearful of the water? Can't
coordinate breathing with arm strokes? Or are you wanting to
brush up on skills and learn new techniques? The Hercules
Aquatics Staff are caring and experienced water safety
instructors who will teach basic to advanced level swimming
skills to all members of your family.
The Hercules Learn to Swim program is based on the American
Red Cross certification standards for progressive swim
instruction. Each level of swim instruction builds on the skills
learned in the previous level. Below are the various levels
offered and the skills associated with each level.
Levell Water Exploration (Baby Pool)
No Prerequisite needed
Level one is designed for those who have little to no experience
in the water. The objective is to assist students in becoming
comfortable and safer in the water. Students will learn to blow
bubbles, submerge their face, float on front and back with
support, kick on front and back with support, learn basic water
safety skills , and be introduced to alternating arm action.
Levelll Primary Skills (Baby Pool)
Pre-Requisite: Levell or Demonstrated Competency
Students will learn to float unsupported, to kick and coordinate
arm movements on front and back unsupported, to turn over
from front to back and back to front, to retrieve underwater
objects at shallow depths, rhythmic breathing, and water safety
skills .
Levellll Stroke Readiness (Main Pool- Shallow Side)
Pre-Requisite: Level II or Demonstrated Competency
Students will learn to coordinate the front and back crawl, be
introduced to treading water and elementary backstroke, learn
to dive from the side of the pool, learn safe diving rules, learn
self-rescue skills, and be introduced to rescue breathing.

LevellV Stroke Development (Main Pool- Shallow Side)
Pre-Requisite: Level 111 or Demonstrated Competency
Students will develop coordination and endurance in the front
crawl , back crawl, elementary backstroke, and treading water.
Students will also be introduced to the breaststroke, sidestroke,
and to turn ing at the wall. Students will learn to dive from
standing and stride position on the side of the pool , in addition
to more safety skills including expanded information on rescue
breathing.
Level V Stroke Refinement (Main Pool- Deep End)
Pre-Requisite: Leve/IV or Demonstrated Competency
Students will continue to develop endurance and refine the
front crawl , back crawl elementary backstroke, breaststroke,
and sidestroke. Students will also be introduced to the butterfly,
underwater swimming, and surface dives. Students will learn
additional open swim tums, alternate kicks for tread ing water,
rules for safe diving from the springboard , and recognition for
spinal injury care .
Level VI SkjJI Proficiency (Main Pool- Deep End)
Pre-Requisite: Level V or Demonstrated Competency
Students will continue to increase endurance and refine the
front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke,
breaststroke, and butterfly. Students will learn approach
strokes, the front flip turn speed turns, the approach and hurdle
on the springboard surface dives in tuck and pike positions,
and additional kicks for treading water. Additional water safety
skills will also be induded.
What do I do when I have completed Level VI?
We strongly encourage children who pass Level VI to
join one of our swim teams:
1. East Bay Silver Dolphins (Year round USS team) or;
2. Hercules Pirahnas (Summer only)

POOL FACTS:
1. The Hercules Aq uatic staff members are certified by the
American Red Cross and fu lly tra ined in the supervision of
aquatic activities, lifeguard training , first aid, CPR and rescue
situations.
2. Our lifeguards spend more than 40 hours getting certified
and tra in 1-2 times a week during the summer to ensure they
are ready for an emergency situation .
3. Our lifeguards wear white uniforms and our Sr. Lifeguards
wear red uniforms, so that our patrons can distringuish between
the two. If you have questions or comments about our facility
please feel free to talk with our Sr. Lifeguards, so that our
lifeguards can supervise the pool and keep our swimmers safe.
4. The Hercules Swim Center is open YEAR ROUND for lap
swim and the East Bay Silver Dolphins Swim Team .
5. Our Main Pool holds 300,000 gallons of water.
6. The Hercules Swim Center was built in 1991 , making this
our 14th year of operation .
7. The Hercules Swim Center has two swim teams. The
East Bay Silver Dolphins practice year round , and the Hercules

WALK-IN REGISTRATION
1. All registration is on a first come, first serve basis unless
specified in the course description.

2. Pre-registration for all programs is recommended. We
encourage participants to register at least one week in
advance of the course starting date, if not sooner.

4. All registration fees must be accompanied by a completed
registration form. A waiver of liability is also required for

Those businesses wishing to enter an automobile, motorized vehicle or group of people/animals in the
parade are responsible for their own advertisement medium and promotional give-aways (i .e. banners,
flyers, keychains, or magnets). There is a $25 .00 entry fee per entry to advertise in the parade. All
