both online (www.onmilitarymatters.com) and retail (31 West Broad St., Hopewell New Jersey 08525) business.
Call them at (609) 466-2329 before visiting them, as they sometimes take their business on the road. Like
Abington Game & Hobby and Alternate Universes, they have agreed to give EPGS members a 10% discount on
their purchases. Thanks to Joe Bisio for connecting us with On Military Matters.

Historicon
Your editor attended his first miniatures convention this July, Historicon. It, along with Fall-In and Cold Wars,
form the trilogy of miniatures conventions sponsored each year by the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society –
East Chapter (HMGS-East). A one day admission was a very reasonable fifteen dollars.
I traveled there with fellow EPGS members Su Hung and John Desmond, and also saw Carl Copeland there. Carl
made the observation “Where else can I spend a whole day playing with five hundred dollars worth of miniatures
that someone else takes countless hours to paint, and it only sets me back fifteen dollars?”
Later Mike Fischer and Greg Jablonski told me they had been there, but we missed each other among the
thousands of attendees. That’s right, thousands. My guess is that there were three thousand attendees at the same
location where World Boardgame Championships draws around one thousand. To handle the massive attendance
the Lancaster Host Hotel set up several more eating areas, but the restrooms were disgusting. With Historicon as
a comparison, I found it incredible that people at WBC thought the restrooms unpleasant then.
I also saw Kurt Mericle there. He was an EPGS member before moving to Pittsburgh, where I knew him for
several years before I in turn moved to Philadelphia. Kurt so enjoyed belonging to EPGS that after moving to
Pittsburgh he initiated a game club there, which I named the Pittsburgh Boardgame Club. It met at a hotel for
several years until disbanding when the rent got too high. Only in the past month or so has it resurrected, meeting
at a game store with space for in-store play.
The one game I played was a hypothetical Revolutionary War battle using the American BattleLines rules by Old
Dominion GameWorks. I played the Americans. The publisher had a room in which they ran about a half-dozen
games from the Revolution through the Vietnam War, providing beautifully painted miniatures for each. The
system used a D20 in which low rolls were good. Unfortunately my average roll was about an eighteen whereas
my opponent’s was about a three. The gamemaster had never before witnessed a game where one side had such
lopsided luck, and repeatedly hollered the latest details about my misfortune to his buddies across the room. I
have to admit it was pretty funny. At one point I asked if I could borrow a Phantom [a fighter/bomber aircraft]
from the Vietnam game to launch a napalm strike on my opponent, we after all being fellow Americans, but the
gamemaster wouldn’t allow it. That was probably for the best, as with my luck it would have landed on my own
position leading to a bunch of bad puns about “Friendly Fire”. For more information about The American
BattleLines system, see www.odgw.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=122, the
publisher’s website
The Historicon dealers’ rooms had over a hundred exhibitors. New EPGS Quartermaster Corps member On
Military Matters had a sizable display, but I didn’t see the two books on the Battle of the Boyne I was hoping to
find after seeing them listed on their company website. I also didn’t see the store’s owner who was out to dinner
when I stopped by to thank him for joining with us. I bought three books from other dealers.
One of those books I had been seeking for a decade. It is General John H. Winder, C.S.A. by Arch Fredric
Blakey. General Winder was in charge of the Confederate Prison system during the Civil War. What happened
ten years ago is that in the space of a couple of weeks three related events took place. In some order or other I,
one, saw this book at a used book store and, having heard I had a great-great-grandfather at the Southern prison
Andersonville, browsed through the first two chapters but didn’t purchase it; two, I saw the Andersonville made
for television movie; and three, a friend suggested I research my Civil War ancestors. This got me interested in
researching my family history, (which is why I was interested in the aforementioned books about the Battle of the
Boyne). I returned to the used book store to buy the Winder book, but it was gone, so I wound up reading a
library’s copy. (By the way, it turned out that my great-great-grandfather was incarcerated at other rebel prisonerof-war camps, but that on the other side of my family I did have a great-great-great-uncle at Andersonville.)
Historicon is also famous for its flea market, where attendees can rent table space. There was a morning session
and an afternoon one. I bought two games at the morning session. The afternoon session was disappointing, as a
third of the tables were empty and a third had the same sellers from the morning session.
See www.fall-in.org for more info on Fall-In, the next HMGS-East convention, November 10-12 in Gettysburg..

Amun-Re Spielbyweb Tournament
By Steve Fitchett
I came in second with 39 points in round one. The winner of my game had 42. Eric Freeman also came in second
in his game with 31 points and the winner of his game had 40. I see Mike Kaltman won his. The second round
hasn't started yet. I am still hoping I made it. 39 should that is a good score. These email games take one to three
months to complete.
Postcards from the Revolution
While surfing www.boardgamegeek.com recently, your editor stumbled across the list of “The world's smallest
historical wargames - 50 counters or less” (www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/15631). One of the first entries
thereon was “Postcard from the Revolution” (www.boardgamegeek.com/game/18023), a pair of free postcard
sized games available from Opposing Force Games (www.enter.net/~mdesanto/Games-Right-PftR.htm).
Opposing Force has several other (non-military) games available there available for free download.
The two Postcard games are The Battle of Brandywine Creek and The Battle of Germantown, both about
Revolutionary War battles that occurred in the Philadelphia vicinity this time of year. Thinking they would be
good material for this issue of Heroics, I emailed the designer, Mike DeSanto, to see if he would consent to my
republishing them.
I wouldn’t have been surprised not to hear back from him, thinking my email would get lost among a pile of spam.
Amazingly Mike replied just an hour later, saying he “would be ecstatic to have his games included” in Heroics!
I asked Mike why he picked these two battles, if perhaps he had some connection to Philadelphia. He said that
indeed he lives in Montgomeryville, but had never been to EPGS.
He also volunteered that he used the website www.britishbattles.com to research the games as it has a fairly
comprehensive list of American Revolutionary War battles with maps. (To which I, salivating at possible future
games Mike can design for Heroics, pointed out they also have webpages about the battles of Trenton, Princeton,
Paoli and Monmouth.)
Following are the first games ever published in Heroics! They have been blown up from their original size.

The Battle of Brandywine Creek - 9/11/1777
©2004 Mike DeSanto
In 1776 British Major General Sir William Howe marched from the Chesapeake Bay toward Philadelphia with
6000 troops. General George Washington marched south to stop the invasion. Washington placed his army of
8000 men at the fords crossing Brandywine Creek.
Washington expected Howe to attack at Chadd’s Ford. Instead, Howe sent half of his army to Chadd’s Ford while
he led the other half to Jeffries’ Ford to the north. General Washington ignored reports of fighting to the north for
several hours, believing the attack there to be a feint. By the time he responded Howe had pushed across the creek
and was driving the Pennsylvania Militia south. The American army was forced to retreat toward Philadelphia.
Setup: Place British forces (Red) in the red border hexes. Place American forces (Blue) in the blue border hexes.
Counters: Values on the counters are Firepower (top left), Range (top right), Move (bottom left) and Defense.
Terrain: Thick Black Border - Cannot cross.
Black Center Dot - No attacks into or through.
Thick Gray Border - Stop after crossing.
Gray Center Dot - +2 Defense, no attacks through.
Turn Sequence: Move and/or Attack with two units. British play first.
Move: Move a number of hexes equal to the Unit’s Move score. No unit may move into or through another unit.
Attack: The Target must be within Range hexes. Roll a six-sided die and add Firepower. If the total is greater
than the target’s Defense, the Target is eliminated. If the total is equal to the Target’s Defense, the Target moves
its full Move away from the attacker and may not act for one turn. The retreating unit stops if it crosses a gray
border, and is eliminated if blocked by enemy units. If two units attack the same Target on the same turn, the
attacks are resolved separately.
Victory Condition: Eliminate all enemy units.

The Battle of Germantown - 10/4/1777

After the capture of Philadelphia British Major General Howe encamped his 8,000 men in Germantown. General
Washington planned a four-pronged attack on this position with 11,000 men, about half militia.
The day of the battle was foggy, and some elements of the attack got lost. The British detected the attack, which
was meant to be a surprise. A large element of the attack was distracted by British soldiers fortified in a stone
house and delayed their attack. Some American units fired on each other in the fog. These complications allowed
the British to face the attack piecemeal and drive the Americans off.
Special Rule: Roll a die before moving a piece. On a six that piece cannot move.
Special Rule: Roll a die at the start of the British turn. On a six the British player may move one American unit.
Turn Sequence: Move and/or Attack with three units. Americans play first.

Playoffs were scheduled for the EPGS meeting August 19th. The top two seeds from each conference present
would play for their conference championship, with those winners meeting in EPGS’ Super Bowl I.
Conference Championships:
AFC: San Diego pounded Pittsburgh 65 – 0
NFC: Carolina eked out a win over Seattle 10 – 9
EPGS Super Bowl I:
EPGS’ first Paydirt Super Bowl was an exciting game featuring Carolina trailing by ten points in the fourth
quarter, taking the lead, losing it in the game’s final minute, and then kicking a tying field goal as time expired.
Most of the game appeared lopsided, with San Diego holding a commanding 13-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
Then Carolina scored two quick touchdowns in less than a minute on a run followed by a fumble return.
Carolina maintained that 17-13 lead into the final minute of regulation, when San Diego scored a go-ahead
touchdown on 3rd and goal with but 40 seconds to go.
Regulation continued with San Diego kicking off (30 seconds left), Carolina attempted a pass that fell incomplete
(20 seconds left), then completed a long bomb (10 seconds left), and kicked the game-tying field goal on the last
tick of the clock.
Not only had the game clock expired, but the real world clock also expired, as it was 9:30 and Oxford Valley Mall
was closing. Hence the overtime was postponed until EPGS’ September 2nd meeting. [Editor’s note: A good
thing this isn’t baseball or the commissioner would have called the game a tie and declared that in future years the
Super Bowl winning conference would get to receive the opening kickoff in the subsequent Pro Bowl game.]
When the overtime finally was played, Carolina received and got a few first downs, but eventually had to punt.
San Diego then drove deep into Carolina territory, but turned the ball over. On its second overtime possession
Carolina started with a pass, and then had a 71 yard breakaway run that ended in the game winning touchdown.
Congratulations to Carolina and its second coach Eric Baskin!

Puerto Rico and the new Shifting Sands. Tied for fifth with four plays
were Advanced Squad Leader, Hammer of the Scots, Nexus Ops,
Paydirt and Twilight Struggle; and tied for tenth were Aton, War of the
