Adopt a homeless Pet!
Dunkin’s Story
Dunkin was found as little kitten
behind a Dunkin Donuts near a
busy intersection in Sevierville. A
Good Samaritan took him home
and cared for him but could not
afford proper vet care.
Young kittens are especially
vulnerable to viruses, upper
respiratory problems, and eye
infections. This is what happened
to Dunkin—being inside and well
fed saved his life but not his vision. As a result he is totally blind
in his left eye and has scarring on his right. He can see well
enough to happily function in any home but is at a disadvantage
to aggressive behavior from other pets; he just never sees it
coming. Where he came from, how he got there, and what happened to
his mom? No one knows.
Sadly, this happens far too often; pets aren’t spayed or neutered,
and they roam, often giving birth in dangerous places. Dunkin is
one of the lucky ones. Now this sweet, good-natured boy is ready
and waiting for his very own forever home.
To learn more about Dunkin call (865) 216-7092.
Protect your dog from the summer heat with water,
shade, and indoor escape. Avoid hot asphalt, closed
cars, and direct exposure to extreme heat.

ADVERTISING
Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for
animals who need homes. Monthly business rates are $300/150/75/35
for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color, and
$200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25.
ADOPTION CRITERIA
Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizations require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility
animal for protection or hunting. Most will ensure that the animals
are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption; underfunded shelters
may instead require a spay/neuter contract and a deposit that will
be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will want to visit your
home and see where the pet will live. Because many of these animals
have not been well treated in the past, extra care is taken to ensure
their safety and happiness in the future.

GERMAN SHEPHERD RESCUE

KNOXVILLE

Sadie is around 5 years old.
She already knows some basic
commands like sit, down, and
shake. She is also crate-trained
and very food motivated. She
needs to be an only dog and
would do better in a home
without young children because
of her large size. Also, it would
be best if Sadie’s adopters had
a fenced yard.
Schotzie knows some basic
obedience, such as sit and
down, and she is house and
crate trained. She does need
work learning to walk on a
leash. Schotzie was in a
home with another German
Shepherd mix and small dogs
and is great with other dogs,
as long as she is properly
introduced. She would do best
with another young, active dog.
The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine
oncology team is seeking dogs with inoperable mast cell tumors
to participate in a clinical trial for the drug masitinib.
Mast cell tumors are the most common malignant skin tumors
in dogs. While mixed breed dogs are most commonly affected,

Speedy is a typical 2 year old
goofy boy. He is absolutely
sweet, handsome, and couldn’t
care less about small active
dogs. He has the cutest ears
that fold forward.
Susie is a 7 year old female.
She was in a home until she
got shocked by an underground
fence. She became fearful of the
yard and began having accidents.
Underground fencing is not a safe
solution for Greyhounds. Susie is
now in foster care with cats and
Greyhounds. She has no trouble
playing in the fenced back yard
and is no longer having accidents
in the house.

WHY SPAY & NEUTER?
nSPAYING & NEUTERING SPARES THE LIVES OF
UNWANTED PETS! Only 1 in 9 cats and dogs born in the
U.S. will find a home. The rest will be destroyed because
nobody wants them.
nSPAYING & NEUTERING CALMS YOUR PET! Altered
animals make more affectionate companions. Altered
animals are less likely to bite because they are more eventempered.

SAFETY! Neutered males are less likely to roam, run away,
or get into fights. Spayed females are less likely to attract
unwanted animals into your yard.
nSPAYING & NEUTERING EXTENDS YOUR PET’S
LIFE! Altered animals live longer, healthier lives. Female
cats and dogs have reduced risks of uterine, ovarian, and
breast cancers. Male cats and dogs have reduced risks of
prostate cancer and disorders.

A Forever Home Should Imply “Till Death Do Us Part” entire life cycle—from puppyhood with all its training issues to

Loyalty Counts
A fire fighter and ambulance driver I know tells the story of a
run she made to aid a blind elderly woman who had fallen at a
Houston strip mall. The woman and her Seeing Eye dog walked the
same route nearly every day, so they both knew the way by heart;
except on this particular day the woman fell and needed medical care.
When help arrived she absolutely refused to get into the
ambulance without the assurances from the ambulance team
that they would take care of her aging dog who it turned out had
cataracts in both eyes and was virtually blind as well.
Some things to consider:
Do you know what type of pet best suits your lifestyle? Do you
travel a lot? How much time can you devote to a pet? Have you
read about housetraining, litter boxes, and behavioral problems?
Are you aware of the daily care needed by this kind of pet? Can
you afford it? What might you expect as your pet ages? Can you
commit to living with this pet for its full life span? On average,
cats and dogs live about 12 to 15 years; other pets have longer
(parrots, horses) or shorter (gerbils, mice, rabbits) life spans.
The woman’s loyalty saved the day. The ambulance team had no Helpful Internet resources:
obligation to take care of the dog; could have left him there to be

Instead the driver took down the name of the dog’s veterinarian and

advanced training and expertise. . . giving
you the confidence that your pet is in the best
