The Georgian painter Niko Pirosmanashvili (Pirosmani), one of the leading representatives
of
Georgian art of the early 20th century, was born
in the village of Mirzaani, Kakheti. Having become
an orphan at an early age, he moved to Tbilisi in
the 1870s. Pirosmani had not received any special
artistic education. At different times he worked
at the railway, was engaged in trade, painted
signboards for Tbilisi wine cellars and dukanis
(taverns), which to a certain extent influenced
the theme of his works (scenes of Tbilisi feasts,
city characters, specific still-lives). However, Pirosmani also produced a series of brilliant portraits,
pictures depicting everyday life in villages and historical characters. He was the only Georgian animal painter of his time. His art was ,,discovered’’
in 1912 by the Modernist artists I. Zdanevich, K.
Zdanevich and M. Le Dentu. His paintings drew
the interest of representatives of Georgian and
Russian artistic circles, who began to collect his
works. Pirosmani’s pictures were presented at an
exhibition titles ,,Mishen’’ held in 1918 in Moscow. The artist died in a cellar in Tbilisi. Despite
the efforts of young avant-garde artists, Pirosmani’s art received due recognition only posthumously.

The discovery of Niko Pirosmani as a painter is attributed to Kiril and Ilya Zdanevich and Mikhail LeDantu. In the beginning of the XX century these
three well-known in the futuristic and avant-gardist circles artists were interested in neo-primitivism. From this point of view, the paintings of Pirosmani, which they by chance discovered in Tbilisi
Dukhans (Old Tbilisi wine-cellar restaurants) were
a real sensation.
Zdanevich brothers found and acquired Pirosmani's paintings, got acquainted with the painter
himself and sent his works to the avant-gardist
exhibition in Moscow. The exhibition opened on
24 March 1913 in Moscow. Mikhail Larionov, Natalya Goncharova, Mikhail Le-Dantu, Alexandr
Shevchenko and other painters participated in the
exhibition.
That same year Pirosmani painted the portrait of
Ilya Zdanevich.
Ilya Zdanevich published several letters about
Pirosmani with the aim to popularize the painter
within Georgian society and artistic circles.
From the very beginning Pirosmani's works caused
controversy and raised different points of view.
In 1915 Pirosmani was invited to the meeting of
Georgian Painters' Society. This is the time when
art-lovers, painters, poets and journalists began to
be interested in Pirosmani. Nevertheless, nobody
could offer any substantial support to the painter.
Zdanevich brothers were the first ones to recognize
the unique nature and scale of Pirosmani's works.

Shalva Kikodze, one of the most gifted Modernist artist in Georgia, gained recognition among
his fellow Modernist painters despite his short
life. After completing his studies at the Georgian
Nobility Gymnasium, he entered in 1914 the Department of Law at Moscow University.
From
1916-1918, the artist studied at the Moscow
school of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
Shalva Kikodze worked for theatre and satirical
magazines, periodicals, and published caricatures
of public figures, in Moscow and Tbilisi. He also
worked as a stage designer. He took active part in
the activities of the Society of Georgian Artists. In
1919, Shalva Kikodze was sent to Paris by the Society of Georgian Artists to further his art studies.
The period from 1920 to 1921, spent by the artist
in Paris, appeared to be very productive. In 1921,
he exhibited his works together with David Kakabadze and Lado Gudiashvili at Galerie La Licorne.
In 1921, he died in Germany after a severe illness.
The artist is buried in Freiburg.

University. This collection included the following
works by David Kakabadze: abstract sculpture –
“A pierced fish” - "Z", 2 paintings from “Bretagne”
series and 6 paintings from "Abstract Motives"
series. A catalogue of this collection was published in 1950, where Katherine Dreier writes the
following about David Kakabadze: "He was one of
the most interesting among all modern art painters and sculptors, partly due to his extraordinary
love towards his homeland and, partly due to his
scientific training, which made him a creative artist of superb quality”.

One of the founders of the Georgian stage design,
Irakli Gamrekeli was born in Gori. He studied art
at N. Sklifasovsky’s Art and Painting School under
B.Vogel and B.Shebuev. Upon graduating from the
Tbilisi Theological Seminary, Gamrekeli pursued
medical studies first at Rostov, and later at Tbilisi
universities. For some time, he also studied at the
Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts. In the 1920s, he was
actively involved in the cultural life of Tbilisi and
was obsessed with Modernist movements. In
1924, he illustrated the journal of the Georgian
futurist H2SO4 and the books by the Georgian
writers G. Robakidze, K. Kaladze, S.Chikovani and
Iona Vakeli. In 1923, he was invited to work as
chief stage designer at the Rustaveli Theatre. In
1926, he began to work with Sandro Akhmeteli.
The artistic trends between 1922 and 1943 at the
Rustaveli Theatre are related to Irakli Gamrekeli,
who worked at the Rustaveli Theatre until the end
of his life.

Sergo Kobuladze finished to paint the curtain of
Zakaria Paliashvili Opera and Ballet Theatre in
1960. The painter worked for several years on this
project. He prepared the sketches and the scale
model of the curtain and completed the incredibly difficult work of hand painting 170 square
meters of the curtain. In 1973 the Opera Theatre
caught fire and the curtain was completely destroyed. The scale model and sketch of the curtain
are the rare examples of this large scale project by
Sergo Kobuladze.

‟The last years of democracy have broken the
dike, poured forth in a cloudy stream, still reminding of ‟anarchy”. For the time being the
avant-garde is whirling around his talents in the
direction of fame…
Again there is the question for me: where am I?’’

‟At last I came to abstraction. I had gone through
years of suffering. I painted, though I was not satisfied with maximal resemblance. I have never
been so happy as I am now, when I paint abstraction. It is the beginning of new life for me”.
