President’s Letter
We made it!
For the August 1st newsletter I had intended to report on the final results from our 43rd Annual
Top O’ The Rockies Rally. This was our 24th consecutive year holding it in Paonia, Colorado,
arguably the premier rally venue in the country. It was well attended and by all indications, highly
rated by the guests as well.
We were hoping to reach an attendance this year of 500 or better. Last year’s attendance closed
at 463 and it resulted in a profit of $1300, a $1000 of which was donated to the Teen Center. That
seemed to our Board to be cutting it a bit close for comfort. The talk on the street was that rally
attendance was down everywhere. We needed a safety margin.
This isn’t rocket science. You can improve a profit margin in two basic ways. You either up the attendance or cut the expenses, or
both. We did try to up our advertising some from last year, but we continue to need to improve on that going forward. We raised
the price of admission slightly but the cost of food went up by the exact same amount, resulting in a wash. No, we were going to
have to find places where we could save money without the guests noticing the changes.
In the end, Carl Thomte did a spectacular job of finding bands for Friday and Saturday evenings. They proved to be wildly popular
and saved us over $1,500 from last year’s budget. Then, out of the blue and just two hours before show time, we hired a local
Paonia band to play for Thursday evening. Surprise! They were a smash hit with the audience and they were all looking at us
like we were geniuses, telling us to be sure to have them again next year! Trust me, they barely dented the budget. Sometimes,
it pays to be lucky.
We changed the trash bins used, the porta-potties, the tables and chairs we had rented, and lowered the estimates for the number
of meals we needed to order. We saved money on the wrist bands and tickets. We lowered the number of 2014 shirts we ordered
and then sold lots of old rally shirts at discounted prices.
Last but not least, we moved the music back to the beer garden, saved some money on a smaller
dance floor, and then used the Club’s donated gazebo to hold the closing ceremonies in the shade
for a change. I think we can claim that as a complete success as well.
All of this was accomplished with the truly over-the-top support we got this year from Mr. Bob
Bushta, the miracle worker. He and the people of
Paonia solved or staffed literally every problem
we encountered. He got the Lions Club to loan us
tables and chairs, another $500 saved. He even
recruited his own father-in-law to haul the town’s
band trailer and pick up and deliver the dance
floor for us. I’m only scratching the surface on his
contributions.
I will have the audited results as soon as possible
but in the meantime, ask anyone who was there,
“Did you have a good time?” I think I know the
answers you will get. And ask me how many
guests were talking about coming to Paonia on the way to Billings, next year!

The oldest and largest Veterans/
Motorcycling event west of the Mississippi
returns August 16 through 18 to the Old
West mining town of Cripple Creek,
Colorado. Here are a few of the rally’s
major features of note:
“Colorado’s largest procession of
motorcycles” will roll through the
mountains under police escort and arrive
in style to the cheering supporters at the
Rally. For those of you not going on the
Recognition Ride, we suggest that you get
out on Bennett Avenue early and get a
good spot to watch the 22nd ANNUAL
VETERANS PARADE. The parade kicks
off on the east end of Bennett Avenue at
approximately 10:00 AM Saturday morning.
• The 27th ANNUAL POW/MIA
RECOGNITION RIDE will stage at
the Woodland Park High School on
Saturday morning. What has become
• Two VETERANS/MILITARY
