What Type of Mammal Are We?
Humans Are
Carry Mammals
Born to Breastfeed
Born to be Worn
• Most immature at birth
• Need to be held next to mom’s
body for warmth, safety, etc.
• Milk lowest in fat & protein
• Fed ‘round the clock (aka. feed
on demand, cluster feeding…)
• Reflexes (Moro, etc.)
• Continuous Contact Mammals

Kangaroo Mother Care &
Neonatal Outcomes
 Increased likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding at
hospital discharge by 50%
 At 1-4 month follow-up, increased likelihood of
exclusive breastfeeding by 39%
BABYWEARING BENEFITS
 Babies cry less (Hunziker, 1986)

In a randomized controlled trial, 99 mother-infant pairs were assigned to an increased carrying or
control group. At the time of peak crying (6 weeks of age), infants who received supplemental
carrying cried and fussed 43% less (1.23 v 2.16 h/d) overall, and 51% less (0.63 v 1.28 hours) during
the evening hours (4 PM to midnight). Similar but smaller decreases occurred at 4, 8, and 12
weeks of age. Decreased crying and fussing were associated with increased contentment and
feeding frequency but no change in feeding duration or sleep. We conclude that supplemental
carrying modifies "normal" crying by reducing the duration and altering the typical pattern of
crying and fussing in the first 3 months of life. The relative lack of carrying in our society may
predispose to crying and colic in normal infants.
 Continues bonding & attachment (Sears, 2003)
 Improves cognitive development (Sears, 2003)

Not Recommended
Thigh NOT
supported to the
knee joint. The
resulting forces on
the hip joint may
contribute to hip
dysplasia.
Better
Thigh is supported
to the knee joint.
The forces on the
hip joint are
minimal because
the legs are
spread, supported,
and the hip is in a
more stable
position.

What about baby facing
IN or OUT?
Not Recommended
Baby carriers that force the
baby’s legs to stay together may
contribute to hip dysplasia.
Better
Baby carriers should support the
thigh and allow the legs to spread
to keep the hip in a stable
position.
http://www.hipdysplasia.org/Developmental-Dysplasia-Of-The-Hip/Prevention/Baby-Carriers-Seats-and-OtherEquipment
9 Reasons NOT to Carry Baby
Facing Out
1. Does not support baby’s legs
2. Difficult to carry – curves away
3. Baby in arched/Hollow back
position = pressure on baby’s spine
4. Undue pressure on groin and may
chaff baby’s inner thighs
5. Overstimulation
6. Lack of head/neck support
7. Temperature regulation difficult
8. Harder to respond to baby’s cues
9. Throw’s off baby’s center of gravity

SAFETY
U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC)
 March 12, 2010: Infant Deaths Prompt CPSC
Warning About Sling Carriers for Babies
 March 24, 2010: Infantino recalls 1 million
SlingRider & Wendy Bellissimo bag-style slings
 14 deaths in 20 years associated with slingstyle carriers
 12 were < 4 months old
 Many were twins in separate slings
& infants with breathing issues
http://sleepingbaby.net/safety.php
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml10/10165.html
CPSC Findings &
Recommendations
 November 19, 2010: CPSC Educates New Parents on
Safe Babywearing
 This warning is not intended to characterize all slings as
being dangerous to babies. CPSC has identified (1)
specific situations that can pose a risk of serious harm to
babies, and (2) simple safety tips that we hope the
babywearing community can share with new parents.
 Take extra care if baby:




Infant < 4 mo. old
Premature
Low-birthweight
Cold or respiratory problems
Hazards
 Babies contained entirely
within the pouch of a
sling with their face
pressed against the
adult’s body, blocking
their breathing
 Curled, chin-to-chest
position
 Carrying low, at hip
*Note: Suffocation can
occur within minutes

What is Our Role?
GOAL = More families babywearing & ALL doing it SAFELY
How can we promote/encourage it?
 Talk the Talk & Walk the Walk:
 Familiarize self with types & safe wearing
 Hold classes & involve BWing moms as “teachers”
Refer families to local groups
and reputable resources…
