Message from the President:
Thanks for Your Sustaining Gift
Ask a business owner about sustainability and you’ll hear about
financial, social, and environmental risks, obligations and
opportunities. Ask an environmentalist and you’ll hear about making
decisions and taking action that are in the interests of protecting the
natural world. Ask us here at the North Carolina School of Science
and Mathematics Foundation, and you’ll most often hear stories
about people.
Whenever I am asked about the work we do at the NCSSM
Foundation, I think of the alumni who’ve started endowments
to support academic programs, including the humanities and
science programs, and research opportunities. I think of the past parents who continue
to contribute annually, though their child graduated years before, because they recognize
just how important the school was to the social and intellectual development of their
child. I think of the employees and staff at corporations and foundations who have funded
outreach programs that have provided students from throughout the state with academic
opportunities they may otherwise have never had. I think of the young NCSSM student who
is working toward graduation, yet has already made a donation to the Foundation to ensure
that future students have the same opportunity to experience NCSSM as has she.
In short, when I am asked about the NCSSM Foundation, I think of you, the donor. The
NCSSM Foundation is fortunate to count you and other generous donors as committed
friends of this school. Your gifts signal your belief in our mission of improving STEM
education in North Carolina.
In this report you’ll read about some of the exciting ways the NCSSM Foundation is reaching
increasing numbers of young North Carolinians, helping them experience quality classroom
and lab lessons along with real-world applications. Thank you for supporting this vision. Your

Opening Doors: Gifts Increase Access to STEM
Students often conduct graduate-level research and present their findings through Mentorship.
Mentorship gives students real-world work experiences
Combine motivated NCSSM students with real-world
experiences at world-class organizations and you get
the school’s popular Mentorship Program.
Begun with the founding of the school in 1980,
Mentorship connects our students with professionals
in the field, giving them exposure that most students
can’t experience until college or graduate school.
During the 2013-2014 school year, 136 students
applied for 75 available positions.
Mentorship begins in the spring trimester of a
student’s junior year with an explorations course
designed to prepare students for the mentorship
experience. An off-campus mentorship assignment
follows during the fall and winter trimesters of senior
year, where students spend two full afternoons each
week working on an independent project or as part
of an ongoing project at an area university or in a
Research Triangle Park lab under the guidance of one
or more mentors.
Placements with mentors at local universities and
corporations are designed to acquaint the students
with research in STEM and humanities fields. As
appropriate, students read and critique primary
and peer-reviewed literature, propose research
questions, test a hypothesis using observation
and experimentation, keep records, analyze data,
participate and/or present in group meetings and
conferences/symposia, and write a literature review,
mini grant proposal, and research paper.
The work can be heady stuff for a high school student.
Participants are always prepared for the challenge,
however. “They say it is one of the most rewarding
experiences that they’ve done,” Dr. Sarah Shoemaker,
mentorship coordinator, says of the mentors. “And
often they’ll say that our students perform like a
high-level undergraduate. A high-level undergraduate.”
Mentorships offer an additional benefit of better
connecting our school to the research community,
Shoemaker notes. “Two hundred and twenty mentors
a year know about our school because we send these
great kids there to do work,” she says. “So it’s not
just about the kids going there. It’s about the view
that the community has about our school, too.”
Mentorship is supported by the NCSSM Foundation,
which, together with the school, is committed to
expanding the program to as many students as
possible. Giving students first-hand exposure to
STEM fields and working environments helps them
make better career choices and better prepares them
for college and careers.

Broyhill Leadership Series brings thought leaders to campus
For nearly twenty years the Broyhill Family
Foundation, through its Broyhill Leadership
Series Endowment, has helped North Carolina
School of Science and Mathematics reinforce the
importance of thoughtful analysis by bringing to
campus some of the state’s most accomplished
STEM professionals to speak with our students
and the greater community about issues that have
shaped our past, inform our present, and influence
our future. Chief among those engagement
opportunities are the Colloquium Series and the
Ethics and Leadership Conference.
A monthly Colloquium Series, begun in 2010, brings
engaging STEM leaders and thinkers — most of them
based at North Carolina universities or research
laboratories — to discuss a wide range of STEMbased topics, with an emphasis on sustainability.
“The Colloquium Series grew out of an earlier series
of talks to raise the intellectual level of events in
the school by having people who could speak on
academic topics come in and speak to the staff,”
says Steve Warshaw, vice chancellor for academic
programs. “My focus is on the students. I want
them to be exposed to people who have expertise
and have good communication skills and can talk
about topics that are relevant to their future and to
our future.”
The annual Ethics and Leadership Conference has
its origins in an international trade trip to Israel
in 1996 that was organized by former governor
Jim Hunt, one of the creators of the school. On
that trip, NCSSM representatives met with a peer
school, the Israel Arts and Science Academy. Says
Dr. Warshaw, “The headmaster of [the academy]
was interested in starting an international ethics
program for high school students. And so we spent
a good bit of time working with [them] on that. The
Ethics and Leadership Conference grew out of that.”
Initially, Warshaw and Ginger Wilson, a retired
founding faculty member, taught a seminar, which
grew into an ethics and leadership course, then into
several courses.
Today, the conference brings together approximately
400 high school students and their teachers from
across the state to explore the ethical and leadership
implications of current issues. Discussion sessions
are led by college faculty, high school and middle
school teachers, physicians, attorneys, counselors,
and other Triangle-area professionals.
The conference has a clear impact on those who
attend, says Dr. Warshaw. “Teachers repeatedly tell
us that the kids continue to talk about it after they
get back.”

Underrepresented rising ninth-graders from around the state participate in Step Up to STEM.
Step Up to STEM: math and science as everyday skills
For two weeks in July, dozens of high-achieving,
underrepresented rising ninth-grade students from
across North Carolina made NCSSM their home.
As Step Up to STEM participants, the students
engaged with NCSSM instructors to develop their
skills in science, math, and communications
through an interdisciplinary curriculum built around
the human body’s systems and their associated
cellular processes.
Accepted students came from as far away as
Buncombe County in the mountains and Dare
County on the coast.
Having learned about NCSSM and experienced the
school through the program, some participants
eventually applied and were accepted to attend the
residential program.
“I hope Step Up to STEM makes the students
understand that math and science are not just
subjects you learn and then never use again,” says
Dr. Sims. “I hope they understand that math and
science are practical skills that are useful in their
everyday lives.”
Activities taught new science and mathematics
concepts, deepened the students’ understanding
of the practical applications of science and
mathematics, and exposed them to potential career
paths in STEM-based fields.
“Early on we show the students, ‘Yes, you will use
that math, yes, you will use that science, and this is
how and why,’” says Dr. Ershela Sims, NCSSM dean
of engineering and technology and director of Step
Up to STEM.
Funding for Step Up to STEM came from the
Burroughs Wellcome Fund and the North Carolina
GlaxoSmithKline Foundation.
Interest in the 2013 summer program exceeded
program administrators’ expectations. A total of
216 students from 42 counties applied, of which
NCSSM could accommodate only about 15 percent.
