Kandie Carle Artistic Director/Vintage Dancer
Ms. Kandie Carle has 20 plus years experience in directing, writing and
performing living history through theater and dance. As the Producing
Artistic Director of the East Haddam Stage Co, Ms. Carle is currently
preparing for EHSCO’s 6th summer season of live theater at Gillette
Castle State Park, while continuing to tour with her one-woman show
Victorian Lady. Her original play, They Called Me Lizzy…from Slavery
to the White House, also continues to tour with actress Stephanie
Jackson in the role of Elizabeth Keckly. Ms. Carle is very pleased to be
directing as well as performing in this commemorative event.

Michael Loomis
Town Crier
Michael, a native of Guilford, was a full-time performer with Washington DC’s
musical, political-comedy troupe The Capitol Steps for 22 years. In addition,
from 1980 to 1995, he starred in more than 40 productions for the Washington
Opera, the Washington Savoyards. Favorite non-operatic roles included Jud Fry
and Curly in Oklahoma, the Wazir in Kismet, Miles Gloriosus in Forum, Edward
Rutledge in 1776, and Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. As a member of
the Creative Opera Ensemble, Michael also brought opera to students in local
elementary schools. His television and radio credits include performances on
PBS, NPR “All Things Considered,” NBC’s “The Today Show,” and ABC’s “Good
Morning America,” “Nightline,” and “World News Tonight.”
Mr. Davis has been acting with various theatre companies throughout CT for
15 years. He’s enjoyed both leading and supporting roles in productions from
Shakespeare to Vaudeville. His most recent work was in an original comedy
with the Hole in The Wall Theater of New Britain in “A Cup of Joe at the Iffy
Fish”. He’s honored to be participating in this historical celebration in the role
of Guilford resident Ward Benton.

Emma is pleased to be expanding her knowledge of the Civil War and Harriet
Beecher Stowe’s relations, having portrayed Mrs. Stowe in her original onewoman play “Aunt Hattie’s House” since 2000. Through her company Be Well
Productions, Ms. Palzere-Rae tours one-woman plays, which include Emily
Dickinson and Gilda Radner. In 1990, she banded together with other female
solo artists to create The Womenkind Festival. She has appeared in regional,
stock and off-Broadway theater, as well as in film, television and radio. Ms,
Palzere-Rae is a former Artistic Director for New York City’s touring company

Mr. Hajnal, of Old Saybrook CT, is a graduate of Northeastern University and
holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in theatre. While there, he
played Eddie Drako in an adaptation of “Donnie Drako”, and learned fire
eating at Coney Island. He continues to participate in various historical
re-enactment groups, representing a broad range of characters and eras.

Norman Thomas Marshall (Actor-Playwright) was born in Richmond,
Virginia, the son of a Klansman and grandson of a slave owner. His New York
debut was in 1965 in playing the title role in Ronald Tavel's Ridiculous classic
Gorilla Queen. He has since shared stage and screen with Raul Julia, Moses
Gunn, F. Murray Abraham, Harvey Fierstein, Robert Guillaume, Burt Reynolds,
Barbra Streisand and Telly Savalas. He spent eleven years as the Artistic
Director of the No Smoking Playhouse on West 45th Street.

Howard Wright
Howard Wright is a life member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, an
organization dedicated to the serious interpretation of Abraham Lincoln, and
is in his tenth year performing as the 16th president. Mr. Wright has performed as “A. Lincoln” for the CT State Veterans Home, the Harriet Beecher
Stowe Center, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the CT State Capitol and historical
He served as Co-chair of the Connecticut Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial
Commission in 2008, and was one of seventeen “Lincolns” profiled at
President Lincoln’s Cottage in Washington, D.C. in 2010. Mr. Wright is the
Dean of Students and Science Department Head at Renbrook School
(West Hartford, CT).

MUSICIANS
William Boughton
As Music Director of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) since
2007 he has become a strong advocate of American Music. Augusta Read
Thomas was the recipient of the newly created position - NHSO 'Composerin-Residence', a program he instituted in 2009, along with a 2 Year High
School program for Young Composers. With the NHSO he has received two
ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming in 2011 and 2014. His
dedication to Musical Education for young students is epitomized by the
Orchestra's successful and innovative Educational Programs and the
creation of the NHSO's 'Artist-in-Residence' program. To date he has commissioned works from Augusta Read Thomas, Jin Hi Kim, Daniel Bernard
Roumain, Christopher Theofanidis and Christopher Brubeck.
The Heritage Chorale of New Haven, Inc. is in its 16th season. The Chorale is distinguished by its exploration of classical to contemporary choral music and its emphasis on choral litera
ture of the African-American liturgical tradition. Founded by Jonathan Q. Berryman in 1998, the Chorale has performed throughout the East Coast and has had the pleasure of collaborating with
other organizations, soloists and ensembles including the New Haven Chorale, the Yale Institute of
Sacred Music, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra.
Tom Callinan holds a B.S. in Secondary Education from CCSU and an
M.A.L.S. (Music Concentration) from Wesleyan University. He has performed with the folk band, The Morgans, created the multi-faceted Crackerbarrel Entertainment, and in 1991 was designated Connecticut’s first
“Official State Troubadour” through legislation by The General Assembly.
His credits include: ABC’s “Good Morning America”; PBS’s “Shining Time
Station”, starring Ringo Starr; CNN’s”Earth Matters”; and National Public
Radio.

Harold Shapiro has been a professional photographer for over 30 years. He
has enjoyed photographing on the Yale campus since 1988 where he is an
Associate Fellow at Jonathan Edwards College. He serves as the Head of
the Photography Department at the Creative Arts Workshop. Harold was
awarded the Arts Council of Greater New Haven Arts Award, a recognition
given annually to those who have had a significant impact of the Greater
New Haven arts community.

working on and performing great old fiddle tunes.

MUSICIANS
Connecticut Valley Field Music is a fife and drum corps playing a
repertory based on 19th Century American music, ranging from
military marching music as written in historical references such as The
Drummers’ and Fifers’ Guide (Bruce and Emmett, 1862) to original arrangements of Appalachian fiddle music, Irish tunes, African American
spirituals and early blues tunes. We marched in our first parade, the
Westbrook Muster, in 1989 with six members and have since grown to
a membership of about twenty playing members and a full color guard.
We play rope-tension snare and bass drums and wooden fifes, and our
uniform is based on the musician’s uniform of the U.S. Army, ca. 1862.
Connecticut Valley
Field Music
For over 25 years Liz Stell and Bill Matthiesen and their Spare Parts,
have been researching, recording, and performing all types of dance
music: contra and English country, 19th century and ragtime, waltzes and
couples dances, tangos and milongas. They’ve played for concerts, contradances, Mostly Waltz events, milongas, and Victorian and other period
balls and events in over 20 states and provinces.
Spare Parts
Guilford High School VOICES is a select group of thirty five
singers that perform a variety of repertoire for major concerts
and events in the New Haven region. They have performed
in both national and international festivals and hold several
accolades for their superior performances. GHS VOICES have
been active in the Carnegie Hall Concert series over the past
decade and have sung under the baton of several prestigious
conductors including Dr. Anton Armstrong, Paul Oakley and
Richard Coffey. They have been invited as a guest ensemble for Connecticut’s premiere professional
choir, CONCORA and are a frequent feature of Christ Episcopal Church’s Music Series in Guilford.
Polite Society Vintage Dance is dedicated to reconstructing and preserving the music and dance of the period 1840 to 1925. The troupe is
involved in the development of theatrical performances (for both stage
and film) and the recreation of period social events, which reflect the
elegance and splendor of the Victorian era and the spirit and excitement
