- - - - - - - Dan$Gosse$ District 4 Kinsmen Governor [email protected]! Dear District 4 Kinsmen, Welcome to the Kinsmen Fall Leadership Conference! I extend a huge thanks to the Kinsmen Club of Calgary for planning what promises to be a fun-filled weekend. Kinette Governor Corie said it best – and I quote “In the definition of transformational leadership, a leader is a person who: • Creates an inspiring vision of the future. • Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision. • Manages delivery of the vision. • Coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision. Leadership brings together the skills needed to do these things, whether it is in chairing a project, developing relationships in the community, chairing meetings, holding office- the list is extensive. When club members become more knowledgeable in Kin, feel capable to take on new projects or want to share new ideas, and are inspired by the experiences and the amazing things Kin members do, it can lead to great things. A Connected- Capable Contributing membership that knows and feels their value to the association is worth way more than the time they give. With this in mind, this weekend is about YOU! It is both a celebration and a call to action to connect us and bring about the strongest, most inspired year imaginable. Not only for your club but also for you, for your community, and all of the lives impacted by the work you do. I cannot fully express how incredibly honoured I am to be able to serve, support, and celebrate the work you do in your communities. I am looking forward to coming to your events and sharing in your passion for making a difference. I hope that the weekend gives you opportunities to learn things that you can take back to your club. In addition, the National Board will be taking some time in the day to talk to the membership as well, because it is your feedback and ideas that will move our association forward. We are very excited to help build on the leadership skills in the District through this training; thank you so much for your participation and attendance.” Ditto. Amen Welcome Fellow Kin! It's FLC time! And we all know what that means... the start of a new Kin year. A time to reconnect with friends, the opportunity to learn some new things, and get a fresh perspective on our upcoming Kin year. I find it's a great time to reflect on our successes from the previous year and get re-energized for the year ahead. And the best part of it is that we get to do that amongst our friends. Better yet, we get the chance to bring our excitement back into our Clubs and communities and start making a difference right way. From the educational sessions that your Governors have planned and your own discussions with your fellow Kinsmen and Kinettes, I'm sure that you're going to have some great tools and great ideas to bring back home to share. Now that Kin Canada has our (and your!) Strategic Plan in place, and our new Executive Director, Grant Ferron, is in place directing Headquarters staff accordingly, Kin Canada is poised to be able to provide you with the Tools and the direction to succeed in your Club. And to be able to do some pretty amazing things in your Community. As you can see, our Strategic Plan is focused on developing strong Clubs, strong Leaders, and a strong Association for you to support healthy, engaged and enriched Communities. Things really do start with you in your Club learning and developing skills, whether you know it or not. :) And here you are! Fall Leadership Conference is definitely the right place for you this weekend! I am so glad that you've made the choice to be here to share in the knowledge that resides within your fellow Kin. Have fun as you learn new things! And remember to share with your own Kin Family back home. Thank you for being a part of our future! Kim Peters National President From the Office of the National President National Headquarters, 1920 Rogers Drive, Box 3460, Cambridge, ON N3H 5C6 519-653-1920 Toll Free: 1-800-742-5546 Fax: 519-650-1091 www.kincanada.ca FROM THE DESK OF GRANT FERRON… October 2015 Greetings and Welcome, On behalf of the staff at Headquarters and myself, we are very pleased to see that you are participating in your District’s Fall Leadership Conference. Good things happen any time you bring people together in both fellowship and learning. Throughout the weekend you are going to have an opportunity to connect with more members of the Kin Family and hear about the wonderful and meaningful activities that go on in their own Clubs. You are also going to meet some generous people who will take the time to share some of their skills and expertise. And of course, you will get a chance to make new friends and share a laugh or two. Many of you are aware that this gig is a fairly new one for me and my task from day one was to bring Kin Canada’s National Strategic Directions to life. With just a few minor tweaks, the journey towards 2020 is already underway. You will hear more and more about the National Leadership Hub that essentially ensures more people are involved in shaping the operational activities of Kin Canada, while putting more emphasis on service and support to our 450+ Clubs. More people will be shown our appreciation and excellence will be acknowledged and celebrated throughout. Our people will have more opportunities to develop both personal and professional skills in such a way that Kin Canada will be the “go-to” organization in both need and contribution. We will be an “Association of Distinction” by what we do and how well we do it. Of course this all starts with you and the journey is open to anyone who commits to the Kin Canada Mission, embraces the Vision and shares our Values. The weekend is truly what you make of it. At the very least I hope you have fun and at the very best I hope you finish with a greater appreciation for the impact that you, your Club and your fellow Kin have on the lives of so many Canadians. It is truly aweinspiring! All the best… Executive Director Welcome to D4 Fall Leadership Conferences 2015 I would like to start off with introducing the 2015/2016 D4 Foundation Board of Directors. Founded in 2005, the Kin Canada Foundation supports the efforts of Kin clubs across the country in serving their local communities. As the official charitable organization of Kin Canada, the Foundation assists Kin members’ work by providing funding for their local service projects. The Foundation is supported by voluntary contributions from Kinsmen, Kinettes and friends of the Foundation. Numerous Canadian charities also directly benefit from the Foundation's funds. The Kin Canada Foundation was established to help the Association and its clubs make Canada a better place to live, work and play! Hal Rogers Fellow The Hal Rogers Fellow is the highest award given by the Kin Canada Foundation. This award was established to recognize Canadians who, by their leadership, accomplishments and community endeavours, have demonstrated the high ideals to which Kin Canada Founder, Hal Rogers was committed. This award may also be given posthumously where circumstances warrant. * HRF Awards presented follow the current application guidelines. The 49th Parallel North Fund The objectives of this fund is to honour and show respect to our fallen Canadian First Responders, Military, Police, Firefighters and EMS by raising the necessary funds to award a Hal Rogers Fellow to their families. The Fund is designated to cover costs for the award and the required regalia associated with presenting the HRF award. * Monetary assistance are through a Foundation Committee selection process. History The catalyst for this fund was Cpl. Nathan Cirillo of Hamilton, a member of Founder Hal’s Regiment. Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent will be the first to receive this tribute from the Kin Canada Foundation with presentations on Monday, February 23rd, 2015 in respective locations. Kin Canada Founder, Harold (Hal) A. Rogers was a member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Brigade. The Brigade originated in 1903 as the 91st "Highlanders." Ironically, the name was re-designated in 1920 as ‘The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada.' Hamilton, Ontario was the birthplace of Kin. February 20th, 1920. Kin has a long standing record of supporting our Nation’s Military. Our structure in Kin is based on Military protocol. Kin Canada supported our troops serving in Afghanistan with the Dave Sopha mural ‘Portraits of Honour’ National Tour. Kin Canada was a presenting sponsor of the National Portraits of Honour Tour. With the support of Kin Canada clubs and the Canadian public in this initiative, we can recognize Canadian Fallen First Responders and their families. For more information about the foundation please email [email protected] Help us raise the necessary funds to provide the support, pride and solidarity that will Honour Our Fallen…We Will Never Forget! Organ Donor Awareness ORGAN DONOR AWARENESS CAMPAIGN The Kin-ODAC was adopted in 2001 as Kin’s first National Public Awareness Project. Andrew Hatfield, a St. John's East Kin Kid, was born with a complex congenital heart disease. Andrew died waiting for a heart transplant, but his dream of Kin helping other transplant hopefuls became Kin-ODAC. Kin-ODAC is a natural extension of our partnership with Cystic Fibrosis Canada because most people with cystic fibrosis eventually need a lung transplant to live. Did you know? Organ donation from one person can save the lives of up to eight people. Also, a single tissue donor can improve the lives of up to 40 people. Organ donation can mean the difference between life and death for many people. For others, such as people with renal (kidney) disease, it represents a total transformation in their quality of life because they will no longer need four-hour dialysis treatments three days a week. Organ Donor Awareness Week Canada’s National Organ Donor Awareness Week is the last full week in April. For Kin members, it’s a time to increase our understanding of organ donation issues and extend that education throughout the communities we call home. DISASTER RELIEF FUND The Disaster Relief Fund provides short-term immediate financial assistance to both national and international areas declared a disaster area. If you would like to make a general donation to this fund, please make your cheque payable to National Disaster Relief Fund. If you want your donation to be put to a specific cause, indicate the name of the disaster on the memo line of your cheque. ONLINE SERVICE REPORTING Currently 142 clubs make use of online reporting. The form is easy to fill out and saves you from having to do a year-end service report. Not only that, it allows you to track your own service hours and dollars as you receive a copy of the report to keep on file and track for your donors, sponsors and supporters. It may be helpful to have one member responsible for gathering data on a hard copy and another member responsible for entering the information through the online reporting form. Contact your Service Director if you have any questions. They are more than happy to walk you through the process. This form is available in the Member Centre (no password necessary). 1 in 25 OVER CANADIANS CARRY AN ABNORMAL VERSION OF THE GENE RESPONSIBLE FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS 1,900 DIFFERENT MUTATIONS OF THE CF GENE OVER 4,000 1 in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF MILLION $5 MILLION will be INVESTED in 2015/2016 in supporting 46 RESEARCH PROJECTS, 24 FELLOWSHIP and STUDENTSHIP TRAINING awards Cumulatively, CF patients attended over Cumulatively, CF patients spent over ,500 16 CLINIC VISITS 24,500 days in the hospital in 2013 in 2013 5 Cystic Fibrosis CLINICS across Canada 50.9 YEARS TRANSPLANT CENTRES across Canada 44 CF PATIENTS RECEIVED TRANSPLANTS IN 2013 THE MEDIAN AGE OF SURVIVAL OF CANADIANS WITH CYSTIC FIBROSIS, IS AMONG THE HIGHEST IN THE WORLD IN 2013. Welcome to FLC! I think this is the time in the bulletin that I should be providing you with member numbers and statistics of how many members we “get” and how many members we lost and what we netted throughout last year and set goals for this year….and that’s when you would probably not really even look at this report and keep turning till you see the next silly or sexy photos in the bulletin. If you are one of those “Analyticals” and like those numbers feel free to contact me and please turn to the Treasurer’s report. For the majority of the Kin that I have met and spoke with throughout D4, those numbers do not mean a thing to you. My emphasis this year is; what is happening in your home club? The focus is on you and your club right now because positive membership numbers across the association have zero impact on your club if you are struggling to keep members and are having a hard time attracting new members. I am hoping the clubs that are experiencing the crunch of member burnouts, aging membership, and a decline in membership annually to reach out to me. If this describes your club, please reach out to me. A few things to consider on the topic of membership: • Does your club have a website and/or a Facebook page that is regularly updated? • When you have a service/fundraiser, do you advertise during the event as 100% volunteer based, we are looking for new members to join our club, and include contact information (email AND phone)? • Are you involving local media when you host your service/fundraising projects and quantifying the positive impacts to your community? • Do your meetings have meaning, kept mostly positive, and respectful of everyone’s time? I am also looking to test out a pilot program this year called the 6th Man Committee*. It is a committee that consists of Kin throughout D4 that is ready and able to assist with your projects should you not have the proper manpower to take on a new task or an existing task. The committee is focused on the smaller the clubs with 10 or less members. Please reach out to me for details. Have fun at FLC and enjoy the Fellowship whether you are getting physical in Brooks or if you are going for the podium in Calgary. John Tse [email protected] District Membership Director District 4 Allen and Cathleen Martin Past Governors/ Awards and Recognition Chair Welcome to a new Kin Year and FLC 2015! We are both very excited about awards and hope to motivate and inspire you to participate. Now let’s all be recognized for the hard work we all do! The www.d4kin.ca website has information on all current District and National awards that are available. Find someone in your club who is willing to keep track and encourage members to apply for these awards. If you don’t already have one, we encourage all clubs to implement an Awards Chairperson. If you need any information on awards, don’t hesitate to contact either one of use: [email protected] and [email protected] There are many awards that a club or Kin member can participate in. Yours in Kin, Allen & Cathleen Martin R Risk Managament Trena Marthaler What is Risk Management? Is your club managing its risks? Risks can come from various sources: e.g., uncertainty in financial impacts, threats from project failures, legal liabilities, credit risk, accidents, injury and natural causes or disasters. As the District 4 Risk manager I can provide support/ advise to the clubs in the District in how to manage risks, informational support and how to connect with if things go wrong. Risk management is a proactive, continuous process that identifies, measures and manages those risks. It enables decision making as to whether a risk is acceptable or requires further action. Process leads to effective decision making, allowing projects and programs to achieve better results. It assists in clearly defined insurance needs and enables contingency plans to deal with the consequences. Did you know that the diligence in our reporting / updating the insurance forms has helped in reducing our overhead costs of insurance to the association? Please remember that You must report each event to Melanie at National to ensure you are covered- even if your club has its own additional insurance, as part of a National organization, your clubs ongoing communication with National will help in the proper coverage. Are your members covered after you update the reporting form? No- for additional coverage for your members, there is a separate fee for additional member coverage that clubs can opt into or do not have to. Running special events and projects present a variety of potential risk management issues. The Kin Canada website resource library has a lot of valuable information to help to help run your projects and club operations safely. If you have any questions you can contact Mélanie Nieson at [email protected] or call 800-742-5546 ext. 208. and she can also provide help and support in this area. The National site has information about insurance coverage and how to handle risk management needs in your club. These resources will help you handle your risk management needs with a step by step guide, corporate status booklets, an outline of club Risk Manager position and a summary of the National Insurance Coverage. Remember to stay safe and update the clubs insurance report and incorporation status by Nov 15. Vision: Campus Clubs Kin Canada requires the sponsor club to have a mentor for the first year of forming a campus club. My plan would be to make it a requirement of our district to extend that mentorship beyond one year. It will not be the sole responsibility of the sponsor club to take on this mentorship, but the collective of all clubs within the area of the campus club. For example the Calgary campus club would end up having a total of four mentors as there are four clubs within the city of Calgary. Reason for this plan would be that each club brings a different way of how a club operates, giving the campus club a wide range of choices. The campus club mentors can be appointed by the Campus Club Liaison, who in turn would be appointed by the district board. The mentors would work alongside the liaison updating the progress of the campus club. As for any new campus clubs for this year I have not received any confirmation of one being sponsored. However I have heard talk of a possible campus club at the University of Lethbridge, and interest being shown at Mount Royal University. I look forward to the challenges and the ever changing world of the Kin Campus program. If you have any ideas or recommendations that you feel could help, or you would like to be a Campus Club mentor let me know. Glenn. U of A Here are all the projects of the year. ZONE D Party RocKIN Zone D Deputy Governor’s Report The Kinsmen Club of Red Deer are just about to open the doors on their Annual 2015 Lottery Dream Home with the grand opening on Oct 3rd & 4th. Online ticket sales are available at www.reddeerkinsmen.com and this beautiful home is located at 77 Lalor Drive in Red Deer. The Kinsmen Club of Lacombe were busy with their 3rd Annual Diamonds in the Sky held Oct 1st, 2015 and again this year was a total sellout. Featuring Dueling Pianos, Silent Auction, and supper for an all “ladies night” out in support of STARS and the Kinsmen Club of Lacombe. One of their next up and coming projects, very near and dear their members hearts is the participation with the local FCSS Santa’s Anonymous Annual Campaign. The Stettler Kinsmen Club supported one of the community’s greatest treasure, Bar Harbor Camp this summer by helping out with renovations. This club still helps throughout the community with small but active projects which makes them one of the more popular service groups in the community. In a sad note, the club mourns the loss of long-‐time member, Mr. Neil Thorogood. Always eager to fill a role whenever asked or needed, Neil was a committed member of the club and community. The Kinsmen along with the Kinette Club of Ponoka once again hosted the 2015 Kin Kampout from July 24-‐26 and other than a little Saturday afternoon rain, the weekend proved to be another success. Successful enough that during the same weekend the decision was made to host the 3rd Annual Kin Kampout on July 22-‐24, 2016. Save the date! On Sept 5th the Kinsmen in joint partnership with Ponoka Lions Club & the Ponoka Downhill Derby Assoc. hosted the 11th annual soapbox derby with 32 racers ranging from 7-‐14 years. Top speed reached 44kph. What an awesome day! Future club events included their Annual Cash Raffle and Christmas Carol Fest. Kinsmen Club of Rimbey latest project is the building of an in-‐town skateboard park. Construction started in June & should be completed sometime this fall. For the summer months, this club has been very busy with running and further development of their very own “Central Alberta Raceways”. This park features 1/4 Mile Drag Strip, 1/4 Mile Motorbike Oval, 3/8 Mile Race Oval, Demolition Derby, Motocross Track, Mud Bogs, and Oval Racing, featuring Sprints, NAMS & mini stocks. Kinsmen Club of Innisfail are bringing back there Santa & Elvis Fundraiser this year. Santa & his elves will be available by donation for kids Xmas parties and even available for adult parties, (minimum donation $300 and Santa prefers redheads). With Santa joining the club this year, the club is planning a Breakfast with Santa CF Fundraiser on Saturday, November 28th. Details to follow. The Annual Grey Club tickets will be available once again this year. Price is $10/ticket. Please contact any Innisfail member for tickets. The club is also hosting a Grey Cup Party for Kinsmen only at their clubhouse. Come November 29th and enjoy some fellowship and of course the game! Tickets $30/person. For more information or to book any of the above, contact Lee Kemp at 403-‐304-‐ 2601 The Kinsmen of Rocky Mountain House are already making plans for their Dinner of Diamond night on January 23, 2016, as well as putting together a Small Business Christmas Party December 4, 2015. They are also being proactive by already planning for their day of hosting Spring Zones for Zone D. YIK, Darren York Zone D DG District 4 Party RocKIN ZONE O Hello fellow Kinsmen. This year has been a very busy year but also a very rewarding year too say the least. When Jenn and I were asked at DLS to set our goals for this upcoming year as DG’s on the Party RocKIN team, we decided to think outside the box. Everyone wants to see a positive growth membership and new Service projects created to raise more Service dollars and hours. We both would like to see this as well and our definitely here to help if needed but we set our goals a little different. The first thing we decided to do was not really a goal but more an experiment, we decided that we would travel together to all the clubs. This way I get to experience Kinette meetings and Jenn gets to see how the guys do things. The response throughout the O Zone has been very positive. I even had the pleasure of installing the new executive for the High River Kinettes and I installed a new member for the club as well. I still haven’t figured out all the words to the Kinette song but I am sure by the end of the year I will know by heart. What is really exciting about this experiment is that I understand that most of the other District 4 DG’s are doing the same thing and coming back with the same positive feedback. The main goal we set at DLS was to challenge every club in the O Zone to send at least 1 member of the club to District Conference in Lethbridge. I realize that it is still early in the year but the response has been overwhelmingly positive. We will definitely keep our goals in sight as continue our club visits throughout the remainder of the year. YIK Rob MacCannell Kinsmen DG O Zone Airdrie Kinsmen Club 12 Members Jenn and I were at their first meeting of the year to install their new executive. These guys do great work in Airdrie and held their annual Canada Day Breakfast that has been running for 35 years. They also run Coins for the Community that happens during the Canada Day Parade. They are planning a new members meeting for November. Date and Place yet to be determined. Drumheller Kinsmen Club 8 Members Jenn and I took the drive out to Drumheller on September 24. This was their second meeting of the year and they had a great attendance. If you are ever invited out to visit them or just want to do a club visit, bring an appetite as these guys treated us to an amazing meal and some great fellowship. These guys also host an annual Canada Day Breakfast and have been doing this for 25+ years. Last year they finished a Service project of building a local playground and are planning another Service Project Code named Operation Picnic Basket. The project sounds great and they are thinking up new projects to do. They will be adjusting their membership numbers as a few new members have joined them. High River Kinsmen 15 Members Jenn and I travelled out to High River at the end of the last KIN year to install their new executive. As always they had the cook trailer ready and Jenn and I along with the High River Kinettes and all their families enjoyed a great BBQ and some fellowship. These guys were very busy over the summer with many things some of which included the High River Kinettes. See report below High River Kinsmen Club Well it is hard to believe a new Kin year has already started. Makes you wonder where the summer went! Our Current membership now sits at 13 and we had a prospective member out to our last meeting so we are off to a good start. As we settle into the new-‐year we are looking for new project ideas and the possibility of revamping our old ones all lead by our current President Trent Moorman. Over the summer months we had a few projects that kept us busy, 1) Kin Wheels shifts. 2) Joined the Kinettes for their Kin Camp Out. 3) Raffle and BBQ for the Wild Pink Yonder Ride in support of Breast Cancer 4) Swing in the Park. This project is where we bring in the Lethbridge Big Band to play in the park. We do this one as a thank you to the community free of charge. 5) BBQ for one of our local schools where we cooked for 700+ students and family for a welcome back party for them. 6) Joined the Kinettes for their Kin Camp Out. 7) BBQ in support of The Narrow Road House. This is a home for women who are recovering from substance abuse. 8) On September 25th we will be taking our BBQ Trailer down to Coaldale AB to cook 200 steaks for a local company’s customer appreciation/conference. At our last meeting on September 23rd we made and passed the motion to take our BBQ skills on the road once again to cook and supply the steaks for District Bowling which will be held in Stettler on November 7th by the Stettler Kinettes. So if you want to have some great fellowship and great food better get your registrations in. YIK, The Kinsmen Club of High River Kinsmen Club of Calgary 35 Members Jenn & I hosted a few of these gentlemen at the Calgary Joint Installations September 9th at Heritage Park. However most of the executive couldn’t make it so I travelled to their 2nd meeting of the year to install the rest of the executive. The Calgary Kinsmen are always very busy over the summer KIN Wheels at Stampede and other projects such as a kids playground they sponsored for the Edgemont area of Calgary. The park will be branded with the KIN logo as I believe the train portion of the playground will be named the “Kinsmen Express”. KIN Wheels raises thousands of dollars and takes hundreds of hours to prepare for but all that money goes back into the community and that is what we are all about. They have a new project coming up November 14th called British Pub Night and they are also the gracious hosts of this years FLC. Okotoks Kinsmen Club 18 Members Another club that Jenn and I visited at their wind up for last year. We met with them June 24 to install their new executive. We enjoyed a fantastic BBQ at Les’s home and had some great discussions over some “pops” in the garage. Over the summer these guys host their annual Show & Shine in August. For any car enthusiast this is a must attend. The guys are actively recruiting new members and of course have their annual Sno-‐Pitch Tournament later in the year. Kinsmen Club of the Stampede City 32 Members My home club, now these guys are very busy over the summer, so busy that they decided to not take the summer off but to continue with the meetings throughout the summer. They have the Kinsmen Ride for a Lifetime, Kinsmen Lotto for the Alberta’s Children’s Hospital and the CF Ride for Breath. The response to meeting over the summer has been positive and all 3 projects were very successful. They also just finished working their Casino September 12-‐13 which was the same days as the Lottery draws. Divide and conquer. The guys have a Service night scheduled for the end of September and a Bring a Buddy Membership night scheduled for November. Strathmore Kinsmen Club 5 Members No report as I am still trying to contact the club. Vulcan Kinsmen Club 18 Members No report as of yet but Jenn and I are scheduled to do installations on October 1st so I will be prepared to give a verbal report at FLC. Fall 2015 Zone ‘F’ Report The year has kicked off with a bang here in the South! We’ve already had 4 Kinsmen Installations, with only 3 more to go! Some clubs have had a very busy summer, and fall is even busier. As DG, I’ve managed to visit a few of the clubs, and have been very warmly welcomed and delightfully entertained! The Community of Kin is strong in this Zone! The men and women are very friendly, hospitable, and extremely fun! Here are some of my highlights from the last couple of months: June: Installations in Lethbridge (Joint with Kinettes) Installations in Coaldale September: Mystery Golf Trip in Medicine Hat Golf, General Meeting and Installations in Claresholm Installations in Medicine Hat (Joint with Kinettes) These are some of the things the Zone ‘F’ Kinsmen have been up to, and what they have planned for the early part of the year. Brooks June 5th & 6th saw the big event of the year for this club – the annual Brooks Kinsmen Rodeo. Details have not made it to me yet, but I have heard many rumours that it was a big success, and that everyone involved had a fantastic time! The Brooks Kinsmen did an amazing job hosting FLC in 2014, so I am sure that a few will be in Calgary in October. The Kinsmen had their first meeting of the year on September 10th, and will be holding their Installations, along with a Glow Golf Night on September 25th. I am eagerly anticipating participating in this! Claresholm The Claresholm Kinsmen revived an old tradition and, along with the Kinettes, entered a float into the annual parade and promptly won the award for their category! They have several community projects in consideration, and look to continue to make good things happen in their town. One item of note: they have recently updated their bylaws after a long and arduous process. Congratulations on this feat! Expect at least a couple members of this club at FLC, as their new president is a firm believer in Kin education. On September 11th, I joined them for a great evening of round of golf, dinner, their first General Meeting of the year, and Installations. Claresholm is hosting their annual mixed scramble golf tournament on September 26th. From past experience, I can tell you that this is a very fun tournament with LOADS of prizes! Coaldale Summer is a very busy time of year for this active club, starting with Installations on June 20th. They hold their annual Carnage in Coaldale demolition derby, which is big event in their town, followed by the Hot August Weekend demo derby in Lethbridge. Their big Harley Raffle runs all summer and fall. September 19th they will be celebrating the grand opening of Kinship Park, coinciding with the reopening of the Cottonwood Estates Basketball Court/Skating Rink. I will be fortunate to represent District 4 at the ceremony. This club should be well-‐represented at FLC! Lethbridge The Lethbridge Club kicked off the summer by ending the past year with the Kinettes in a joint celebration of Installations and Awards on June 15th. We had a great turnout, with lots of kids! Other than the Great Strides Walk, the Lethbridge Kinsmen Club was fairly quiet over the summer, but is revved up into high gear, now that the new year has started! The first meeting took place on the 1st of September, and plans are growing quickly for a memorable year! We’ve already made a cheque presentation to a local elementary school for the Leader In Me program, something we strongly support and have provided funding to three schools. Also in support of local children in schools, we spent a day handing out over $20,000 in Payless Shoes gift cards, so that less-‐fortunate children could buy new shoes for the year, as part of the Ready, Set, Go program. Lethbridge will be sending one student to Kin Kollege, and several members to FLC! Look out Calgary! The calendar this year includes the annual Tricks for Eats, where the Kinsmen and Kinettes collect nonperishable food items for the Food Bank on October 30th. This year will mark the first Non Party Christmas Party (stay tuned for details!) Set your calendars for the 2nd Annual Mardi Gras Gala on the 13th of February; this party must NOT be missed! Two weeks later is the 3rd Annual Break the Ice Funspiel – make your plans to join in! The Lethbridge Club is looking at moving the annual K40 golf tournament from the fall to the spring, and will be hosting the big softball tournament in July. Lots of things happening in Lethbridge! The don’t-‐miss event in Lethbridge this year will be District Convention 2016! KIN Wilder, The Ultimate Frat Party, will be epic! Talk about Party RocKIN! Planning by the Lethbridge Kinettes and Kinsmen is well under way! Medicine Hat This club is growing more dynamic daily! They started the year with a bang, including their Annual Mystery Golf Tour on August 14th. They graciously invited me and showed me a RocKIN good time, throwing us all into their black party bus and playing 18 holes and eating dinner in Brooks. Past DG Tom Simpson took one for the team and stayed sober to drive the bus. I had a total blast! Installations for the Kinsmen and Kinettes was a joint celebration on September 11th. Those folks know how to have a good time! This club is sending a member to Kin Kollege (yay!) and hopes to send a few of the members to FLC. Taber I have not heard much from Taber, and don’t know any of their plans for the year, including when they will be holding their installations. I do know that they are very involved in the town’s annual Cornfest in August, and contribute to the community through volunteering and donations. Summary I am excited to be a part of Party RocKIN and D4, and, as always, a member of Kin! This year holds loads of potential for growth, both in membership and Kin culture! I cannot wait for FLC, and fully expect the Kinsmen Club of Calgary to Rock our socks off!!! I periodically review my goals which were set at Pre-‐Term, and I am happy to report that I am on the path I set forth. My Zone & I have a long way to go to fulfill them, but the year ahead is full of promise! Remember, if our goals are easy and quickly attainable, they were too easy! 2015-‐2016 will be EPIC!! Zone ‘F’ DG, Tim “Mother Fuckin” Frantz ZONE G HINTON KIN CLUB: President is Bill McLaughlin There are 9 members plus one Life Member. They set meetings based on the last meeting business. Always Mondays at 7:30., and at least once per month. Every second month they meet less formally at a lounge for a drink and snack to brain storm. This past season Spring/Summer 2015 they donated $5,000.00 to a family in Hinton towards a wheel chair accessible van. They also purchased a specialized wheel chair for another child in town. They lend out their pancake grills to the elementary schools for their fun days and also to other fundraising non-‐profits such as Tour de Cure Canada Day pancake breakfast. They use funds from their upcoming Illusionist night to sponsor two scholarships at each High School. They are beginning their 55th annual Santa’s Anonymous program which supplies a hamper of non-‐perishables/ a full Christmas dinner and toys for the children. The Foothills Road Riders just completed their 30th Toy Run event in which they donate toys to the KIN Club for this endeavour. DRAYTON VALLEY KIN CLUB: President is Penny Lees-‐Smith They currently have 6 members. They meet twice a month, with a general meeting on the first Monday of the month and a social on the third Wednesday of the month. They’re currently in the midst of their second round of "Flocking" this year and it is going very well. Their flock of 30 flamingos goes out about three times a week. This will run until Thanksgiving. They’re also working on their second annual Princess Ball that will be held on January 30/16. Work has also started on their 7th Annual STARS golf tournament that will be held on June 18/16. They have sold out every year and are hoping for the same this year. To date their club has raised over $125,000 for STARS. Their yearly local phone directory has just been distributed with 6,000 copies going out free to Drayton Valley & Area. This project has been going for over 20 years now. They will be again selling Vesey Bulbs in the spring and in February will take part in the National Day of KINdness. They’re working on a new project for next year called Squashing CF and are really looking forward to it. ST. ALBERT KINSMEN: President: Chris Tremblay Their club consists of 24 members and 1 life member. They meet for their general meeting every 2nd and 4th Thursday and executives are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday. General meetings start at 7pm. This year they have had their 2nd annual Bull-‐a-‐rama. They are also working with the Edmonton comedy festival hosting a comedy night October 9th&10th. They host their famous Rainmaker Rodeo in May and are always crossing their fingers for no rain! It’s been a service project for them for the last 50 years!! They’ve donate $5000.00 to the sidekicks group in St. Albert. Recently renovated their hall and have their premier RV park. EDSON KINSMEN: President: Don Biggar Their club has a membership of 18 guys. They meet every 1st &3rd Thursday of each month. They hosted their annual slo-‐pitch tournament this August. The money raised from the event went to the spray park they recent had built in town. They have no new upcoming events planned. STONY PLAIN KINSMEN: President: Jim Scheibelhofer 2014-‐2015 was a very busy year for our club. Since I joined the club we have never had a place to call home. As some of you may have seen at Districts this year, the Pioneer Museum has recently completed their latest exhibit called Legacy Street. They were in need of donations to complete the interpretive center to host schools and other groups. Through our fundraising efforts we were able to donate $100,000.00 to help them build the new “Kinsmen Interpretive Center”. We have been given a home for life with the Pioneer people. We were also able to donate $20,000.00 to our local food bank to help them complete their expansion. All these donations were made possible by our annual Stony Plain Kinsmen Rodeo and Exhibition. We continue to do our Christmas Hamper program and this year with the help of many volunteers we were able to make Christmas’ for 375 families. Other events include Pancake Breakfast at the Festival of Trees, hotdogs at the Town’s Christmas Tree Light Up, volunteering for security at the local senior men’s hockey games and helping out at the annual New Year’s Eve Festival. Please contact your District Service Director for more information. http://modifywatches.com/collections/cystic-fibrosis-canada MILK-for-BRITAIN We need your club’s support to tell the story! The year was 1941 and an urgent transatlantic radio broadcast from British Minister of Food Lord Woolton directed the following question to millions of listeners in Canada and the United States: “Won’t you people in America do without cream in your coffee just one day a week so that little children in Britain can have milk?” Lord Woolton’s appeal was later reinforced when Sir Winston Churchill was widely quoted as saying, “We must put milk into our children!” A long forgotten but fascinating piece of Canada’s World War II history is about to take its rightful place at centre stage. The full story of “Milk for Britain” has never been revealed. In fact, it is a forgotten wartime tale both in Canada and in Britain, lost in the passage of time. However, it is a remarkable tale of how a small group of Canadian service club members rallied millions of men, women and children across Canada to help thwart Hitler’s plan to malnourish Britain’s children. National Documentary Project Overview Learnography (formerly Curriculum Services Canada) has accepted the opportunity to produce a 10-minute documentary and accompanying study guide to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Milk for Britain Campaign. We need to raise $50,000 for the total cost to complete this project. Learnography brings an educator’s perspective to the project along with their ‘Seal of Approval’ for teacher’s to use in the Canadian Curriculum of Studies. The final documentary would be completed by August 2016 and made available just in time for the new 2016 school year. This documentary will be closed captioned and in compliance with AODA accessibility regulations. Kin Canada would have exclusive rights to the documentary and study guide and it would become available for all clubs to use as an educational training tool. This documentary would become a public document for global historical reference. "How can our club help?"
