CHM Success Stories
The voice on the phone was filled with excitement. It was a message from a
client who had been jobless for several months. Fortunately, CHM was able to
help them with some education funds, and they were calling to tell us that they
had a job—even before finishing the training. Hearing the excitement in their
voice because they had not only found a job, but after the client works for a
few months, the new employer will reimburse CHM for the monetary help.
The client was paying it back. It is not a handout; it is a hand up. NOTE: Client
is still employed as a CNA, does continue to get food monthly but seems
happy and content with life.
“I got a job! I need black pants and shirts to wear!” “I got into CNA class,
and I need scrubs!” How wonderful to hear the excitement in such statements
from our clients, and it is thanks to your clothing donations we are able to
really help them. To hear the excitement in their voice, after finding the things
they need to help get their life back on track, is a little gift from God.
A late evening phone call—please come over, there is a situation. A client is
displaced, homeless, and a motel room is needed for the night. And a rental
house is needed. It happens that quickly. Something you would never believe
could happen to you does. It is time to rebuild a home, and a family. Things
will never look the same again, but the future looks so much brighter when
people can see the outpouring of support, of help in a very rough time. NOTE:
Client was able to purchase her own home, is now rebuilding her family, and
working at Wamego Health Center. CHM helps with occasional food pantry,
but she is standing on her own now.
A woman’s husband was in rehab at Teen Challenge for a year in Lawrence.
She worked as a flight attendant in Kansas City, but her pay was being garnished for medical bills and she was only able to keep several hundred dollars
every month. And while her husband was away, both of their teenage boys
ended up in jail. She was at her absolute lowest when she came to CHM, who
contacted a local pastor to come and talk with her. She later requested that the
pastor visit her boys while they were in jail, which he did several times. Our
partnership with Kansas Legal Services allowed her to stop the garnishments.
Her husband returned from Teen Challenge and is now working. Her boys are
also now out of jail and on track with God, as well as employed.
Community Health Ministry continues to be able to help those in our communities that
need jobs, a place to rent, that need to get away from a bad situation, who need help
with gas for a medical appointment, or who need food or help with a utility bill, who
need their teeth cleaned or fixed, or who are sick and cannot afford medication or a
doctor’s appointment. We thank you for your support in our mission.
Sustaining Membership Campaign
Annual Meeting Held:
March 25, 2014
Community Health Ministry-West
706 4th Street, Wamego, KS 66547
We are very pleased that we have been able to keep up with the
growing needs, but this growth has been occurring as we were preoccupied with getting organized in our wonderful new facility. The
thing that is now obvious is that our donor numbers have not been
growing as fast as the needs have been growing. And obviously it
takes more money to meet more needs. Now that we are settled, we
need to put more focus on funding.
So that leads me to our solution to this dilemma. We call it the Sustaining Membership Campaign (SMC). We cannot just ask our faithful givers to do more – we need to broaden the base and get the community more involved. To this end we are beginning to circulate
SMC brochures which asks everyone to consider responding with a
pledge for the coming year. We will be increasing our efforts to tell
our story to more and more people in the community. We believe
more people will give when they hear of all the good that is being
done at CHM.
If you stop by our offices, you will see a mural of our Donor Tree
which will soon be adorned by vinyl leaves with names of our donors. Giving levels will be recognized by the color of the leaf –
green, red, silver, and gold. I hope you will support this effort by
filling out the pledge portion of the brochure and returning it to us at
your earliest convenience. You can also help by handing a brochure
to a friend and telling them the CHM story.
Community Health Ministry has dedicated staff; we have good partnerships; we have 13 years of experience; we have great facilities; we
have a reputation for being responsive to meet needs; and with your
help we will have the financial underpinnings to be viable for many
years to come.
Thanks for all have done to make Community Health Ministry a
blessing to hundreds (should I say thousands?) of people.

CHM Annual Meeting Minutes
Ben Meek asked Rick Hernandez to offer a prayer before we started eating.
Forty staff members, board members, and volunteers enjoyed desserts & snacks provided by the board & staff. We had 1 veggie tray and 2 fruit trays, which we decided we’d
need more next year. Everyone enjoyed everything that was brought in.
Ben called the meeting to order at 6:30. He thanked everyone for their support of the
Ministry and then introduced the board members. He asked the staff to introduce themselves and tell a little about what they do. Ben presented the minutes and Herb moved to
approve them and it was seconded. Ben asked for a vote to approve and it was unanimous.
Ben reviewed the financial information and asked for questions. He talked about the
grants and the Capital Campaign which is at $173,922.10. Several grants out that we
should hear back in the next month. One of the grants is for the purchase of Celebrations
building.
Ben asked Rosemary to give some updates. She said that in the beginning we were
“rooted in faith” and that we hope to carry on with that. We appreciate all of our volunteers as we could not do it without you. She talked about Ruby Slippers and other fundraisers coming up. The Ruby Slippers Slip Away event is on May 5 th and the Wamego city
wide garage sales are May 4th. Family night is in June, July 4th parade, and August is Hoo
Haw at the Columbian. At least 8 are sold already. Sept. is a golf tournament.
Beth Day mentioned that she had done a Summer Campaign with the Smoke Signal
about Community Health Ministry and they won 2 nd place in a Community Service Award
for the state of Kansas.
Deb was asked to speak and talked about the Student Intern, Jenna, who is a Social
Work Student working on her Masters. She is also going to help with the summer lunch
program with the help of K-State student Carlie. Adryanna, our Marriage & Family Therapist, will be leaving in a few weeks. Deb had seven Washburn nursing students doing their
semester rotation in our clinics here.
Lorena spoke about the new building that actually cost $388,000 to purchase & renovate & $38,000 in donated services & 1 million in other gifts. The normal operations bills
have gone up because of bigger space and more phones, computers, etc. We are half
through the Capital Campaign so we need to find more donors. She also thanked Krista for
her help with getting QuickBooks updated.
Ben said there is one “Bad Business” on the agenda: Deb has resigned to take a job at
the hospital effect May 17th. The hospital has agreed to share her for a while to finish
grants and other things during the transition to a new CEO. Deb then talked about her
leaving. She talked about her coming to CHM as a race. She has run her leg and is now
ready to hand off the baton to the next leg. A going-away reception will be May 16th from
2-4 at the office.
Ben announced that due to Neil Gately being transferred to a new church we needed
to have a new pastor in his place and Rick Hernandez was recommended. Marsha Walsh
resigned from the board & John Simecka was asked to take her place. Herb made a motion
for Rick and John to be approved as new board members. Rob seconded & the motion
passed.
Herb stated that as soon as the weather warms up they will start landscaping and anyone who is interested in helping is welcome to come and help. Delores Holz said she
could provide us with a round table for our break room. Ben asked for a motion to adjourn
and it was moved and seconded and the meeting was adjourned at 7:10.

My transition from Board Chair to Executive Director has
been both exciting and overwhelming at times. There is lots going on at CHM that you only see when you spend full days here.
The most obvious challenge that we face is keeping up with the
ever increasing numbers of people coming to us for help.
Mary Beth Fund, Nurse Practitioner has recently come on
board to help in the medical area. We are looking for more help
in the dental area as we now do screenings in 67 schools, plus offer dental services to 8 nursing homes in the area. Counseling
demand continues to grow as we take a “whole-person approach
to wellness”. Our counselors logged 86 appointments in January!
Our summer lunch program for children is positioned to grow as
we partner with Kansas State Department of Education.
Did I mention the food bank? Wow, more and more people
are coming for food. And we also are recycling medical equipment and good used furniture to people who are setting up their
households.
Meanwhile our expansion into the Celebration Building next
door has given needed offices and warehouse space. We were
excited recently when we got news that the Corvias Foundation
has chosen us as their recipient of free remodeling help. So for
very few dollars on our part, our facilities will be repaired and
improved to make best use of the space that we have.
With all this activity you can bet that none of us at Community Health Ministry will get bored. Thanks for all you have done
to help make all this happen!
