Joshua Honomichl
MILLBRAE, CA – This month, the Northern
California Underwater Photographic Society
proudly presents a unique lecture by acclaimed
underwater photographer Sara Shoemaker
Lind. In her hour-long presentation, Sara will
unveil images from her most recent trip to the
Fijian Islands that have been described as the
“soft coral capital of the world.”
Sara’s presentation will focus primarily on the
startling biodiversity of the region and the
unique opportunities for underwater photography. “The intensity of color and diversity
of marine life makes it hard to not keep going back. If I told you I saw a pygmy sea
horse and a humpback whale on the same
dive would you believe me? Probably not. I
still can’t quite believe it but a recent photo
trip there this past fall was full of surprises.”
The evening truly promises to be a opportunity to see some unique work from a acclaimed
artist in the medium we all love. In addition to
her work from Fiji, Sara has also promised to
share images from water projects that keep her
busy when she is not in tropical waters!

April 9
The diversity of marine life in Monterey Bay has attracted an
unparalleled cluster of world-class research institutions, making our region a hot spot for both wildlife and ocean science.
Join us to learn about some of the ground-breaking work our
research community is doing using incredible tools such as undersea robots and electronic satellite tags. They’re unraveling
mysteries about great white sharks, the northward invasion of
Humboldt squid and new species living on the slopes of littleexplored seamounts. Their work is having an impact far beyond
Monterey Bay, helping inform ocean science and management
policies both nationally and internationally.

Maury Schlatter’s Passing
Helga Mahlmann
It is with deepest regret that I must tell you that Maury Schlatter
had died. He had a stroke and was on life support until this last
Wednesday. Roberta, his wife, preceded him in death last year.
Maury was 93 years young. He dove and took underwater photos
into his late seventies. He will be greatly missed by all those who
knew and loved him.

Write a Letter in Support of Guam’s Shark Fin Ban
Earlier this week, Guam Vice Speaker BJ Cruz and Guam Natural Resources Committee Chair Senator Rory Respicio introduced Bill No. 44-31, banning the sale and possession of shark
fins and manta parts in Guam. This bill is similar to the new
laws in the Northern Mariana Islands and Hawaii. A hearing
for Bill No. 44-31 is set for Tuesday, February 1.

wish to support the aims of the NCUPS
Strong opposition is already mounting in Guam, mostly from
the fishing community and some members of WESPAC (Western Pacific Fisheries Council, the regional Fisheries Management Organization).
TO ALL NCUPS MEMBERS If you have never received a membership kit when you joined NCUPS, with your official membership card, and would like one, please contact Lanette Otvos.
Your letter can provide the needed encouragement to Guam’s
legislature to ban the shark fin trade. Read more and view the
bill.
Please note that NCUPS requires a completed membership application from all new members as well as your “General Release
from Liability” form.
Let’s build on the momentum from the CNMI!

Wide ranging in warm temperate and tropical seas.
Distribution
Habitat The shortspine dogfish is found at a depth range of 4 to
740 m (13 to 2,405 feet), depending on the location. For example,
in Australia it is found on continental slopes at a depth range of 180
to 600 m (585 to 1,959 feet). In South Africa, it occurs at a depth
range of 50 to 740 m (163 to 2,405 feet), while in the Gulf of Mexico
it is found at 330 to 394 m (1,073 to 1,281 feet). In New Zealand it
is reported from very shallow water, from 4 to 55 m (13 to 179 feet).
Reproduction This species is ovoviviparous, giving birth to 4 to 9
young per litter. Gestation is between 1 and 2 years.
Food habit data demonstrates that the shortspine spurFeeding
dog feeds mainly on fishes, squids, and crustaceans.
This species occurs singly or in schools.
Behavior
Distinguishing Characteristics The dorsal fins of this species
have two spines (the first dorsal spine is much shorter than the
fin base). The first dorsal spine origin is in front of the pectoral fin
rear tips. The first dorsal fin is relatively low, being 2/3 as high as
it is long. The falcate pectoral fins have a rounded rear tip and
somewhat concave rear margins. The overall color is gray, with the
ventral surface being paler than the rest of the body. There are no
white spots on the side of the body. The upper portion of the dorsal
fin is darker. The eyes are green.

Randy and I have decided we can do a trip
next year and we have been wanting to
Komodo for a long time, so Komodo here
we come! We haven’t been on a liveaboard
since 2000 when we went to Papua New
Guinea, so this will fit into another of our
wishes which is to go on another liveaboard
trip. We’ve never been to Komodo so we’re
really looking forward to the underwater and
above water photo opportunities at Komodo!
After researching companies and boats we
decided to go with Worldwide Dive & Sail
on board the Indo Siren. World Wide Dive
and Sail is a great company with a good record for safety and fun, and their boats are
downright luxurious! There are designated
areas for camera preparation and charging
batteries and each cabin has an individual
computer and multiple power sources. They
provide large fresh water rinse tanks to be
used only for underwater cameras. Cabins
are air-conditioned. More information on the
Indo Siren and their Komodo cruise is on
their website, http://www.worldwidediveandsail.com.
We thought it would be fun to get a group on the boat, so I thought I would
spread the word that we are going to NCUPS members. Since WWD&S is a
continuing sponsor of NCUPS we thought this would be a good way to support a sponsor also! The maximum passenger load is 16 and last time I talked
to Jenny there were 13 spaces available (after Randy & I). We are not leading
the trip, just going on it, so are asking anyone who is interested to call or email
Reef & Rainforest for more information or to RSVP. First come first served and
the cruise will fill fast.
I hope some of you will be able to come on the trip! It should be really fun.

Borneo Outer Islands - SY Siren
Date
August 21– 27, 2011
Price
1,260 Euro per adult (16 years and over)
630 Euro per child (up to 15 years/accompanied by adult)
Worldwide Dive and Sail is now offering families the opportunity to join the Siren
Fleet in Malaysian Borneo and her outer islands and South Visayas, Philippines
during the school summer holidays in 2011. The trips are dedicated to families
who up until now may have been put off joining such trips. The trips will allow
both parents and their children to dive together (dependant on age and qualifications), to try scuba diving if not qualified and to enjoy many other activities.
We have kayaks, water skiing, wakeboarding, treasure hunts, visits to stunning
beaches and much more. On board the yacht children will be able to eat healthy
but favorite and familiar food such as burgers, fish fingers and more. Soft drinks
are included in the price. We have many films that kids love such as Disney films
and these can be viewed on each cabins personal computer or in the saloon on
the large plasma screen whilst enjoying pop corn.
Note: Children are only charged if they require a bed for themselves. If they are
at an age where they do not need a bed there is no charge.
