MEMBERS IN THE NEWS!
SUMMER 2015
Kristy Menage Bernie, RDH, MS, RYT, the AADH Immediate
Past President and Director of Educational Designs,
celebrated her 30th year in dental hygiene by going back to
school! She earned a Master’s of Science degree from the
University of California, San Francisco in June 2015 and
received the Elizabeth “Libby” Fuhriman Gardner Award. The
Gardner Award is the UCSF School of Dentistry’s highest
honor, given in memory of Libby Gardner, a 1958 graduate of
the dental hygiene program and wife of David Gardner,
former President of the University of California. Presented to
two outstanding graduates, in dental hygiene and dentistry,
the award honors scholastic achievement, service to the
university and community, leadership, and demonstration of
concern for others.
For her Capstone research on continued competence
requirements as a condition for license renewal, Kristy received a research grant from the ADHA Institute for
Oral Health. In addition, she received the 2015 California Dental Hygienists’ Association President’s Recognition
award for the second time as well as the CDHA Outstanding Component Member Award.
Kristy is pictured here with her proud father, Walter Menage.
Tricia Osuna, RDH, BSDH, FAADH, a past president of AADH, received the Alfred
C. Fones Award during the ADHA’s Center for Lifelong Learning Annual Session
in Nashville, TN on June 20, 2015. This award is presented to a dental hygiene
professional for outstanding achievement and dedication as well as significant
and lasting contributions to the profession over a period of 25 years or more.
Tricia graduated from the University of Southern California dental hygiene
program. She is past president of the California Dental Hygienists’ Association, a
career long member of both ADHA and CDHA, previous Member of the Dental
Board of California, and Founding Member of the American Board of Facial
Esthetics. Licensed in both California and New York, and recognized as a top
speaker, Tricia’s unique combination of roles in dental hygiene include
consultant, clinician, educator, international presenter, author, mentor, and
owner of Professional Insights, Inc.
Emily Boge, RDH, BS, MPA received the Hu Friedy Master Clinician Award from
the American Dental Hygienists’ Association at the Annual Session and Center for
Lifelong Learning in Nashville, TN on June 20, 2015 for “outstanding clinical
expertise in relating to interdependence of clinical practice and patient education
for the improvement of patient compliance” (www.adha.org). The award
included a cash prize, travel, accommodations, and crystal trophy. She described
the experience as “unforgettable,” especially to be able to “share the stage with
individuals in the dental hygiene community who have served as mentors and
friends.”
Emily also recently earned her Master’s in Public Administration from Upper Iowa
University (UIU) in Fayette, Iowa, with a focus on Health and Human Services.
The MPA is a professional degree for those pursuing management careers in all
facets of leadership. Her master’s research investigated the implementation of Public Dental Programs,
Dental Program, which was implemented by the Iowa Department of Public Health
specifically Iowa’s
Bureau of Oral and Health Delivery Systems. This program has made great strides to improve access to dental
care for thousands of Iowans under the age of twelve.
Emily practiced clinical dental hygiene in rural Manchester, Iowa for the past 12 years and accepted a Dental
Administrative Chair position with Hawkeye College in Waterloo in July 2015. She is excited to use the skills that
AADH, ADHA, Hawkeye College, and UIU have provided to ease the transition from clinical practice to public
administration.
Anne Guignon, RDH, MPH was awarded the Certified Speaking Professional
(CSP) credential at the National Speakers Association Annual Meeting in
Washington, DC in July, with her sister, Molly, and 90 year old mother in
attendance. Anne is the first clinical dental hygienist to receive a CSP, which
is the NSA’s highest earned credential, and has been awarded to only 12% of
all professional members. The application process is rigorous. Candidates
must submit proof of outstanding platform skills, demonstrate a solid,
sustainable business plan, and supply an extensive list of clients and proof of
attendance at NSA educational events. To date, only five other dental
professionals have earned the CSP.
Anne comes from a long line of communicators. Her maternal grandfather
traveled all over the country as an after dinner humorist and was a
newspaper columnist, and her paternal grandfather was a lively defense
attorney who loved working with the underdog. Anne’s father taught college
English, speech and theater, both of her parents were accomplished writers
and editors, and each of her six siblings share writing, editing, teaching, performance, communication and
creativity genes.
While Anne is grateful for this recognition, she is well aware that the support of the dental hygiene community
for the last two decades has played an integral role in the development and success of her speaking career.
Every group that has hired her, every corporate sponsor, and every audience member played a role in Anne
earning her CSP. Anne states, “There are so many highly qualified dental hygienist speakers. I can’t wait for more
of them to walk across the stage with their CSP medals around their necks!”
