Ground Loops: Understand, Divide
& Conquer
Join industry guru Bill Whitlock
of Jensen Transformers for an
informative session on how to
stop wasting time and money on
‘solutions’ that offer only marginal
improvements to hum, buzz, or
hum-bar issues. This practical
know-how session will arm you
with knowledge on performing
simple location tests and ‘breaking’
ground loops without creating
electrical hazards or liability issues.
The Ice Cream Parlour - Rubenstein, a well-known café in St. Petersburg Russia,
recently made some significant adaptations to their acoustic and aesthetic environment.
Recognizing the acoustic challenges of the space, they got in touch with local firm APD
Media Systems who recommended the use of Primacoustic Paintables, an innovative
acoustic panel that features a specially formulated textured latex surface that may be
painted.

The JDI Duplex is a passive direct
box that is equally capable of handling low
level instruments such as an electric guitar,
or the most dynamic instruments, such as
a digital piano. The 100% discrete design is
centered around two high performance audio
transformers that produce an exceptionally
linear response from 10Hz to 40kHz and gently
smooth out transients for a natural limiting
effect that is often referred to as vintage

Space Heater™
Artist Update
8-CH 12 AX7 tube drive summing mixer
Made to add character to recordings
or distortion to in-ear mixes, the Space Heater
is an innovative 8 channel summing mixer
that lets you dial in everything from slight
transformer saturation to over-the-top tube
distortion.
Set up as four stereo pairs, the
design begins with a choice of ¼ TRS or D-sub
inputs plus ‘send & receive’ pairs for quick
connection to a workstation. Each channel pair
is 100% discrete enabling 4 stereo sets to be
used independently or be sent to a stereo mix
bus with left and right outputs. To control the
distortion, each channel set is equipped with a
drive control to increase or decrease the signal
being sent to the 12AX7 tube and a level control
to set the output. A unique Heat switch lets
the user apply 37, 75 or 150 volts on the tube
depending on the fidelity needed. The lower
voltage starves the tube
causing more distortion while a higher voltage
produce a cleaner signal.
Each stereo set is also equipped
with a handy high-pass filter to help eliminate
resonance and clutter. This is extremely useful
for cleaning up a mix. The send jack works
double duty as a second output with the D-Sub
for parallel processing. The master section
features a simple level control, headphone amp
and choice of XLR or TRS outputs. All outputs
are equipped with over-sized transformers
to eliminate ground loops and add vintage
character.

Headload™
Guitar amp load box with built-in Radial JDX and Phazer™
The 100% discrete fan-cooled
design begins with a series of high power
cement encrusted epoxy-coated copper coil
resistors that are used in conjunction with
a 6-position Grayhill rotary switch to safely
dissipate the power generated by the amplifier.
A variable range control allows incremental
power reduction at low levels if needed. This
is augmented with high and low resonance
switches to compensate with extra sparkle or
bottom end. Power going to the speakers may
also be turned off for quiet recording or to
eliminate the speaker cabinet on stage. A frontpanel ¼” headphone jack with level control
makes the Headload the perfect companion for
quiet practicing.
In addition to the 8 ohm speaker
cabinet outputs, the Headload comes with a
built-in Radial JDX direct box. The JDX has gained
tremendous notoriety with artists including
Megadeth, Sting, Rascal Flatts, Aerosmith
and Radiohead often replacing the guitar and
bass amp microphones. This is coupled with a
6-position voicing switch that lets you choose
the desired amp and cabinet emulation. This is
supplemented with a 2-band EQ for fine tuning
or used to eliminate overly harsh harmonics
that are produced by some amplifiers. Two JDX
direct outputs offer the choice of pre or post
EQ settings to allow the artist to control his
wedge or in-ear monitors to suit while sending
a non-equalized tone to the front of house mix
position. For engineers who prefer to combine
a microphone with a direct feed, the Headload
has also been outfitted with a Radial Phazer phase alignment tool. This enables the stage
tech to align the direct feed with the mic and
dial-in the ideal mix on stage.
In the studio the Phazer can also be
used for creative equalization such as creating
‘Boston-type’ out-of-phase rhythm tones or an
ultra-thick wall-of-sound. A second set of ¼”
line outputs may be used to feed additional
stage amps or effects if needed. The Headload
is made in Canada from 14 gauge steel and is
supported with a 3 year transferable warranty.
Part# R800 7058 00
Estimated retail: $1,000 USD
Product Features
• Drives amp hard for best tone
• Safely handles up to 130 watts RMS
• JDX output delivers consistency
• Phazer creates huge tones

Deane Jensen 1942 - 1989 Jensen with two NEW solutions
Born in Annapolis, Maryland in
1942. Deane grew up in Princeton,
New Jersey. His Norwegian father,
Dr. Arthur S. Jensen, was a physicist
who earned his Ph.D. at Univ. of Penn
in 1941. He became an electronicimaging expert and was awarded 25
patents, taught physics at the U.S.
Naval Academy, and later worked for RCA Laboratories and
the Westinghouse Defense and Electronic Center. Deane said
he remembered Albert Einstein coming to their home to visit
his father.
Following his father’s footsteps, Deane majored
in physics and electrical engineering at the University of
Pennsylvania. In September 1968, Deane joined Quad Eight
Sound as a systems engineer, becoming the VP of engineering
in 1971. His accumulated experience in the recording industry
told Deane that audio transformers often were the root
cause of ‘bad sounding’ mixing boards and audio systems.
He decided to embark on a quest to fix the shortcomings,
starting with transformers.
Deane became obsessed with how audio
transformers interacted with system electronics and started
basic research to solve the ‘bad sounding’ problems. Some of
his earliest designs from the 1970’s include the JT-DBE direct
box transformer and JT-MBC mic splitting transformer which
set the standard for sound

The Iso-Max SP-2SX is a two channel speaker to line level converter that
lets you convert the high power signal from an audio amplifier output to a +4 dB
(nominal) balanced line level for further processing or signal distribution.
The design begins with a rugged flanged enclosure that comes standard
with gold plated XLRs and a removable screw-down barrier strip for easy installation
in NEMA enclosures and 19” racks. Plug and play easy to use, this passive interface
does not require any power to work. Inside are two Jensen high performance
transformers that isolate the output to eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground
loops while they eliminate issues with ‘bridged’ and ‘class D‘ power amp outputs. A
series of input pad DIP switches let you select the range to suit various power amps
for at 25 W, 75 W, 250 W, or 750 W max in to 8 Ω. All types of amplifiers may be
used including 25 V and 70 V line driver types.
Once connected, the SP-2SX is able to withstand signal levels to +19 dBu
at 20 Hz without introducing distortion, phase shift or artifact of any kind. This
opens the door to expand existing systems without having to run additional line
level signals throughout a facility.
CI-RJ2R
Two channel RCA to CAT-5 extender
quality and signal handling
and are still in use today. He
later developed an integrated op-amp called the 990 which
was described and published in the AES Journal in 1979.
The amplifier set new standards for its combination of low
noise, low distortion, slew rate, stability, and high output
drive capabilities. When Deane published the circuit, he
intentionally made the patent public domain, showing his
special dedication to furthering the state of the art.
After Deane’s passing in 1989, Bill Whitlock a friend and former engineer at Quad Eight - acquired
the company and continued the tradition with further
refinements in production uniformity and long-term
reliability. Bill introduced the ISO-MAX® range of plug & play
audio and video isolators to the world, enabling end users
to solve hum and buzz problems with ready-made Jensenequipped solutions.
Radial’s president and owner Peter Janis began his
relationship with Jensen in 1992 as the Canadian distributor
and over the years, became Jensen’s largest customer. To
celebrate Bill’s 70th birthday, Peter purchased the company
from Whitlock. Jensen will continue to manufacture
transformers in Chatsworth, California and the company
is currently researching new ways to improve designs
and develop new technologies to bridge the benefits of
transformer isolation with today’s recording, broadcast and
production needs. The Jensen legacy will continue.

The CI-RJ2R is a two channel passive line driver that lets you extend
unbalanced signals to 100 meters (350’) using standard CAT-5 or CAT-6 balanced
twisted pair Ethernet cable.
Sold as a ‘transmit and receive’ set, the design begins with two rugged
flanged steel enclosures for easy mounting under a desk or inside a rack or NEMA
enclosure. Each end is equipped with RCA inputs and outputs with a standard
Ethernet RJ45 type connector in between. One merely connects the source and
destination devices using the RCAs and bridges the two units using off the shelf
CAT-5 or CAT-6 cable. This enables the system designer to employ pre-wired
network cable to run analog audio throughout a facility without having to fish
new wires.
Inside the receiver module are two Jensen high performance
transformers that are able to withstand signal levels to +19 dBv at 20 Hz without
any discernible distortion. These provide galvanic isolation between the input
and output to eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground loops, rejecting noise
by as much as 124 dB.

The Hafler PH50 is a high performance phono
preamp for moving magnet (dynamic) cartridges
that incorporates a well defined RIAA curve
to preserve and transmit the original program
material with minimal coloration. Particular
attention has been applied to reducing noise, a
problem common to the 33 RPM recording chain,
resulting in a -82dB noise floor with greater than
91dB of dynamic range and less than 0.002%
distortion.
The Hafler PH60 is a high performance phono
preamp for moving coil cartridges that combines
a class-A transformerless head-amp design with a
well defined RIAA curve to preserve and transmit
the original program material with minimal
coloration. Due to the extremely low signal level
produced by moving coils, particular attention has
been applied to reducing noise while retaining
the purity of the signal path to address the most
demanding audiophiles.
Proudly made in North America, the Hafler PH34
and PH44 SUTs are passive devices that employ
ultra high performance Jensen Transformers to
boost the low-level signal produced by a moving
coil cartridge by as much as 31dB without any
amplification or the associated noise that they
produce. Jensen wrote the book on transformer
technology and for over 40 years has gained the
accolades of being the world’s most respected and
revered audio transformer manufacturer.
The Hafler HA15 is a solid state headphone
amplifier that has been meticulously designed
to produce Hafler’s legendary sound quality with
sufficient gain to power any type of headphone.
A unique ‘focus’ control may be engaged that
brings the stereo image to the center to better
approximate the feel as if listening to loudspeakers
in a typical ambient space.
HA75 ‘Tube Head’ Headphone amplifier
Part# HA400-0075
Estimated retail: $1,000 USD
The Hafler HA75 is a vintage-inspired headphone
amplifier that has been meticulously designed to
produce Hafler’s legendary sound quality while
adding excitement and character of a real 12AX7
tube circuit to optimize the listening experience.
Fully discrete with a class-A front end, the HA75
sounds magnificent. Features include a unique
feedback control, adjustable focus and loudness.
When it comes to high-fidelity
audio equipment, David Hafler
is often described as the man
who led the charge. In 1950,
David Hafler and Herb Keroes
started a Philadelphia-based
company called Acrosound in
order to build and sell audioquality output transformers,
primarily for home electronics hobbyists. In 1954, David
Hafler and Herb Keroes parted company. And that same
year, Hafler met an audio engineer named Ed Laurent,
who had designed a novel single-tube driver circuit for a
power amplifier. In 1955, the two men founded the Dyna
Company which later became Dynaco with the intention
of not only producing transformers, but high-quality
audio circuitry.
Dynaco’s first product was the Mk. II 50-watt
power amplifier. Available as a kit or preassembled unit,
the Mk. II was
sold for several
years until its
replacement
in 1956 by the
Mk. III amplifier
which produced
60
watts.
Dynaco is best
remembered
by the ST-70 that was launched in 1959 and sold
primarily as a Dynakit. A masterpiece of efficient circuit
design, the ST-70 provided reliable, high-quality audio
amplification at an affordable price. More than 350,000
ST-70 amplifiers had been sold when production finally
ceased, making the ST-70 the most popular tube power
amplifier ever made. Today, the Dynaco ST-70 is still
considered to be one of the most outstanding tube
amplifiers ever made.
In 1966, Dynaco became a wholly owned
subsidiary of Tyco, Inc. and David Hafler remained with
the company for a few years, but left in 1974 to join
Ortofon, manufacturer and importer of high-end phono
cartridges. In 1977, Hafler founded the Hafler Company,
continuing the tradition of offering high quality kits and
assembled hi-fi gear. The Hafler DH-200 was introduced
using mosfet outputs – a feature that way ahead of the
rest of the amplifier community. In 1987 Halfer sold his
namesake to Rockford Corporation where chief engineer
Jim Strickland took on the challenge of moving Halfer
towards building high end amplifiers. This culminated
with the 9505 which by all accounts is one of the most
musical power amps ever made.
In 1995, Hafler left the hi-fi market to instead
focus on producing amplifiers for the studio market. This
is when Radial began the affiliation with Rockford, taking
on the distribution of Hafler amplifiers for Canada.
Radial purchased the Hafler brand from Rockford in
2014 with a goal of eventually re-launching some of the
Hafler classic amplifiers.

Paintables serve up a softer sound
London Room Kits
Affordable options for any room
The Primacoustic Paintables appealed
to shop owner Denis Firsov, as they allowed for
some creative applications that worked out
perfectly for his space. Firsov had an artist paint
each of the panels so they would also serve
as original art pieces. “We used the Paintable
panels as elements of interior design and it
turned out successfully. They also dramatically
improved the acoustics in the space, so much
so, that patrons can now quietly communicate
with each other and truly enjoy the space. The
combination of form and function adds an
exciting new element and I am very happy with
the final results.”
Paintable panels are made from the
same high density 6lb glass wool as used in the
popular Broadway range. Each panel is carefully
encapsulated to retain the minute fibres and
prevent dusting. The top and sides are then
finished in Absolute white latex. This can be
painted with a light dusting without affecting
the acoustic performance.
Primacoustic,
