October 12th is designated Parent Conference Day by
the school district and is a student holiday. Many of
you signed up for a conference at Parent Orientation.
If you have not yet signed up; your child’s teacher
will be contacting you to set up a time that will work
for both of you.

The Book Fair will close at noon, on Friday the 16th.
students will be participating in the NAME
the Name That Book (NTB) Program is to
foster a life-long love of reading in all 3rd, 4th,
and 5th graders.
A list of books that
encompasses a wide variety of genres has been
provided, and students are encouraged to read
as many as possible. This program culminates
annually with a series of contests to celebrate the students’
comprehensive knowledge of the books. The 100 books are
chosen by CFISD librarians and are available at your library. At
the end of October, students will form teams within their grade
levels. For the time being, they need to be reading the 100 books
on the Name That Book List. You may go to your school’s Library
Home Page and find the list of books under the Name That Book
link. Happy Reading!!!

Bus Riders:
S – Show Respect
We would like to ask for your help in keeping our students
safe while ridding our busses. Ours drivers have the
responsibility of transporting our students safely every
day. Students must cooperate by following these safety
guidelines:
1. Enter & exit quietly and always listen to the
driver.
2. Use a one seat voice, never yell.
3. Sit with feet on the floor and always face
forward.
4. Never stand when the bus is moving.
5. Never move seats.
6. Keep backpack closed and all belongings to
yourself.
7. Use kind words.
Please review these safety rules with your child(ren).
Their safety is our first priority. Students who fail to follow
their rules may receive a bus report. If behavior continues
other consequences may be given.
Holmsley’s PBIS Program
Holmsley is proud to be entering into its fifth year as a PBIS
Campus. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Intervention
Strategies.
This program focuses adult’s attention on
acknowledging positive behaviors in students. It also provides a
universal MATRIX for procedures and expectations throughout
the campus. Your students may talk about their PAWS at
Holmsley. PAWS is an acronym that stands for Practice Integrity,
Act Responsibly, Winning Attitude and Show Respect. Part of
the program allows staff members to acknowledge students
who are showing these characteristics with PAW Bucks. PAW
Bucks can be redeemed by students in their classroom “store”
or at our HUSKY Store which is open a few times throughout the
year. Parents can participate by discussing the importance of
integrity, responsibility, respect and having a winning attitude
at home.

Husky Store October 21st & 22nd
Students are receiving PAW Bucks for “showing their
PAWS” which is Practicing integrity, Acting responsibly,
having a Winning attitude and Showing respect.
The store will be open once per nine (9) weeks. Students
will be able to shop at the Husky Store on Wednesday and
Thursday, October 21st & 22nd.
Students will be able to shop in their classroom store
during the nine weeks.
Attention Fathers and Father Figures:
Watch D.O.G.S. are in our halls and classrooms!
Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is a nationally recognized
program through Fathers.com that bring positive male role models
into our school each day. Dads are able to work in classrooms, patrol
our hallways and be a presence during lunch and recess times. Many
men who provide a model for our students. If you are interested in
more information about the program, please visit www.fathers.com .
If you are interested in being a Watch DOG, please contact the office
or send a note with your child requesting a registration form.

OCTOBER-NATIONAL BULLY PREVENTION MONTH
At Holmsley the students and staff will recognize National Bully Prevention Month with the
following activities:
Thursday, October 1st: Mrs. Gant our school counselor will review the facts about Bully Prevention Month and discuss the
definition of bullying.
Monday, October 5th: World Day of Bully Prevention, staff and students wear blue. On the morning announcements, Mrs.
Gant will continue to discuss the tools and strategies we use at Holmsley to help in the prevention of bullying and bullying
behaviors.
Wednesday, October 7th: College and Career Day. Staff and Students wear college t-shirts.

Wednesday, October 14th: On the morning announcements, Mrs. Gant, will discuss the basic ingredients for healthy
friendships (Everyone is important, Be accepting of everyone, Don’t judge others, Appreciate differences & Look
for the good in everyone).
Friday, October 16th: On the morning announcements, Mrs. Gant will review the ingredients for a healthy friendship!
WEEK OF OCTOBER 19th: Stand Up for Someone!
Monday October 19th: On the morning announcements, students will take the No Place For Hate Pledge against bullying.
Wednesday, October 21st: “Make it Orange and Make it End” Student and staff wear orange to Observe National Unity
Day by wearing orange to unite against bullying.
WEEK OF OCTOBER 26th – 30th: Random Acts of Kindness Week
Monday October 26th: Parent Night, parents please join Mrs. Diaz & Mrs. Gant for presentations on Safety and
Bully Prevention at Holmsley, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria!
Wednesday October 28th: Teachers and students will report Random Acts of Kindness to Mrs. Gant to post outside her
office!
Friday, October 30th: College and Career Day. Students and staff dress like the job they would like to have when they
grow up or wear a college T-shirt.
COUNSELOR TALK
The Holmsley Guidance Office has several announcements for the month of October. If you have any questions about any
of the announcements or activities listed below, please contact Mrs. Gant, at 281-463-5893.
A big thank you, to all the parents who attended our first Counselor Talk meeting last month. A new school year can be a
challenge, so we discussed how we can help our students get off to a good start. Ms. Gillock, our campus data specialist,
also presented the campus Title 1 information.
Parenting Meeting-Our next Parenting meeting will be on Monday, October 26 th, 6:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m. Please join Mrs. Diaz,
our principal and Mrs. Gant for presentations on safety and Bully Prevention at Holmsley. We will meet in the cafeteria.
College and Career Activities-At Holmlsey this year, we will continue to focus on college and Career activities each month.
The 1st Wednesday of each month will be college and career day and staff and students may wear college t-shirts. On
October 30th, students and staff will dress like the job they would like to have when they grow up. Parents please help us
by helping your child to pick a career and an outfit for that special day. PLEASE NO COSTUMES!!
Holmsley’s Annual Food Drive October 9 th - 30th, Students and staff bring non-perishables to help our school and district
community.
October is National Bully Prevention Month. The students and staff at Holmsley will recognize National Bully Prevention
Month. Please see the activities listed above on this Howler .

LSC-CyFair Children’s STEMtastic Stations Set This October
Children can explore Science, Technology, Engineering and MATH (STEM) this October with the “STEMtastic Stations” program at Lone
Star College-CyFair. “In this fun learning event, we will explore science and engineering principles as we utilize simple materials to construct
the tallest tower,” said Shamim Arastu. “In addition, we will create and race balloon powered rockets.”
Two sessions will be held Saturday, Oct. 24 in the Kids’ Corner in the library at 9191 Barker Cypress. The 10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. session is
designed for ages 5-6, while the 11 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. session is designed for ages 7-10.
Parents must accompany children at the sessions, which are limited to 25 participants, and all are asked to arrive an hour in advance to
receive a session ticket. Exit prizes will be given to all participants.

LSC-CyFair Math Games Days for Ages 3-10 Return this October
Lone Star College-CyFair’s Mathematics Department’s Math Games Days for children ages 3 to 10 return for two Saturdays this October.
Professor Sharon Stefan and her students have planned some new and innovative activities to help children of different ages have fun while
learning some cool math. Parents/adults must be with their children at all times, but no registration is required for this come-and-go event.
“Exit prizes will be given to all participants in this carnival of fractions, geometry, measurement, and all things numerical,” said Stefan. “Invite
your family and friends to join us as we multiply the fun when arithmetic is done!”
Math Games Days activities will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 and Oct. 17 at the children's library at 9191 Barker Cypress.
LSC-CyFair Children’s After-School Math Programs Set this October
Children can enjoy the magic of numbers and geometry with the “Discover the Power of Numbers” program this October at Lone Star
College-CyFair. Two sessions will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 20 and Oct. 27 in the Kids’ Corner in the library at 9191
Barker Cypress. The math programs, designed for pre-kindergarten through second-grade students, will have different activities and
themes.
Parents must be present at the sessions, which are limited to 35 participants, and all are asked to arrive an hour in advance to receive a
session ticket.
