Both conditions lead to an increased risk for breaking a bone, especially at the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip. Osteoporosis can result in disfigurement, reduction or loss of mobility, decreased independence and lowered self-esteem, which may lead to depression. Osteoporosis can strike at any age but is most common among adults. We all begin to lose bone density in our mid30s, and women lose bone density even more quickly as they approach menopause. Women who are at highest risk are those who are older of Caucasian or Asian descent and are past menopause. • • Canned salmon or sardines with bones Cereals and orange juice that have been fortified with calcium You can also take calcium supplements if your daily diet does not give you enough calcium. At least one in three women and one in five men will suffer from an osteoporosis-related fracture during their lifetime. Over 80% of all fractures in people over 50 are caused by osteoporosis, and current statistics show that among those who suffer a hip fracture, 28% of women and 37% of men will die within the following year. Vitamin D – helps your body absorb calcium and improves muscle function. Sunshine is a natural source of Vitamin D but many people use sunscreens or avoid the sun altogether due to the risk of skin cancer. The recommended dose of Vitamin D for those over 50 years of age is 800 to 1000IU daily. What are the symptoms of osteoporosis? There are no apparent symptoms in the early stages of osteoporosis. The following symptoms appear in the later stages: • Hunched posture • Bone fractures that occur easily • Loss of height • Back pain Calcium and Vitamin D supplements come in a variety of forms and strengths, so ask your Pharmacist or doctor about what’s right for you. Your physician can have your bone density measured through a Bone Mineral Density test, which compares the proportion of mineral in your bones to that of a normal average young adult. You can also check with your Pharmacist to see if an osteoporosis screening clinic is available. What are the treatments for osteoporosis? Based on your bone density test results, your physician will determine the best treatment for you according to your risk of breaking a bone in the next 10 years. Medications can be used to help slow the progress of osteoporosis. The most commonly prescribed medications are the bisphosphonates, which include drugs known as alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel). What lifestyle choices can help me avoid or manage osteoporosis? Ensure you’re getting enough Calcium and Vitamin D Calcium – include adequate amounts in your daily diet. Women between 18 and 50 years of age require 1,000mg daily. That increases to 1,200mg after 50 years of age. Natural sources of calcium can be obtained from: • Low-fat yogurt and milk • Soy products such as tofu • Dark green, leafy vegetables • Almonds Stay active Exercise – helps build strong bones and slows the onset and development of osteoporosis. Ensure you include both forms of the following types of exercise in your regular routine: • Strength training – helps strengthen the muscles and bones in your upper arms and upper spine • Weight-bearing exercises – help strengthen the bones in your legs, hips and lower spine. Examples are walking, jogging, running, climbing stairs and skipping rope Avoid bone-weakening activities Smoking – Use of tobacco increases bone loss and risk of bone fractures. Check with your Pharmacist and doctor for the smoking cessation program that will work best for you. Alcohol intake – Having more than two alcoholic drinks a day can slow bone formation. Falling – As we age, our risk of falling increases due to factors such as poor balance, reduced vision and decreased muscle and bone strength. Be aware of your surroundings and take precautionary measures. For example: • Be especially careful when walking on slippery surfaces or on area rugs that might slide • Ensure rooms are adequately lit for your movements • Use handrails where they are available • Install grab bars in tubs and showers Ask Your Pharmacist 11 5 49 Jamieson 3 Webber Naturals Combi-Pak 1 Day Cream, 1 Day Tab or 3 Day Tab 14 99 For Women or Men 90’s or For Women or Men 50+ 90’s 99 5 99 Swiss Natural Extra Strength 1000IU Tabs 90’s Canesten • Clinic days • Compounding • Prescription transfer from other pharmacies Centrum Vitamin D3 Folic Acid 1000mcg Tabs 90’s Dr. Scholl’s 29 Black Cohosh 40mg Caps 90’s 2 69 99 • Computerized patient files • Compliance packaging • Med checks Webber Calcium+D Gummies 60’s, VitaVim For Women 90’s or For Women 50+ 90’s 4 Next time you’re in our pharmacy, please feel free to speak to one of our Pharmacists to find out more.
