It’s here! The ability to access computing resources from anywhere you have access to the Internet!
Need to access Intranet sites like BUCWIS or the Student Web from anywhere using all the popular web
browsers, smartphones, netbooks and tablets? Want to use specialized software like SPSS,
Dreamweaver, Minitab, Microsoft Visual Studio, EndNote, and other applications just like on campus
computers, but from the convenience of wherever you’re at? Read on about the cloud environment
available!
Supported Browsers
The Barry University cloud environment requires only a browser with JavaScript support. Support
browsers include Internet Explorer (versions 6.x*, 7.x, and 8.x), Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and
Safari.
NOTE: Apple devices such as the iPad are now capable of accessing most of the cloud utilities using the
WebRDP application. This is further discussed on pg.8.
First Time Accessing the Site from a Device
Run the System Check link prior to logging in when using a different device. Doing so will help you install
the proper browser extensions for uninterrupted use.
On clicking the System Check link, you may be presented with a prompt to verify an application. Press
“Run” and let the system check continue.
2
Once completed, you should be prompted to restart the browser. On restart, all applications can now
run.
Please resolve any issues identified in the System Check as needing updates such as updating Java or
adjusting your Popup Blocker.
Log into http://apps.barry.edu using your BarryNet username and your password. Your username is
before the @ symbol in your e-mail address ([email protected] or
[email protected]).

Desktop Components
Users should familiarize themselves with the main components of the system: 1. Home 2.
Applications 3. Web Resources, and the 4. System menu.
1. Home provides a list of all your commonly used applications and links for quick access. You will see
recently opened applications as well as favorites. Favorite applications and links can be designated
within the settings menu at the bottom of the screen.
a. My Files located on the Home Screen allows users to store their files in the cloud for
easy access from anywhere with internet access. Saved documents can easily be
accessed from the S:\ drive when connected to any Barry University computer.

to option to upload files to this location by (2) dragging the file from your computer
onto the “File Uploader”.

when prompted with the message Are you sure you want to navigate away from this
page.

3. Links to internal websites are posted under “Web Resources”.
Clicking most of the links does not open a new browser window; instead you are presented with a
window within the website. In order to close these windows click the smaller, black X, and not your
browser’s X, as shown in the image below. After clicking WebAdvisor you will need to log into
WebAdvisor with your username (lower case), and your password. Blackboard, Employee WebMail

Data Storage
o Students, faculty and staff now have a network drive to which they can save their
information. When you logged into a PC in the classroom or lab you can save your work
to your network drive. You can access that file from your home or a different device,
after logging into http://apps.barry.edu and continue working on it.
o This feature is good for those users who have an iPad or iPhone. Since the iOS devices
do not have local storage, it is a lot easier to save files to the network drive for later
retrieval from any device.

logged into apps.barry.edu or by using a computer that has the selected software such as SPSS,
Minitab, or MS Office 2010 installed.
Closing Applications
After printing or saving your document any application can be closed by clicking File, then Exit. Closing
the browser window without going through the file menu may prevent the program from opening
properly in the future. Some applications such Microsoft PowerPoint2010 and Microsoft Publisher 2010
may take a few minutes to automatically close the open browser window upon exiting the application
due to the fact these applications are very resource intensive.
10
Logging Out Of Your Session
After logging out of your application(s), click the red power button at the bottom of the screen.
Using an iPad in the cloud environment
When using an iPad in the Barry University’s cloud environment, applications have limited use, however,
you will be able to view online resources such BUCWIS, the Student Web and the library.
Users are now able to navigate between the main pages by swiping left or right on the screen.
When using applications on the iPad in the cloud environment the iPad needs to have WebRDP Mobile
installed. WebRDP Mobile is a free app for iOS which will run on iPads. The WebRDP Mobile app will
launch as needed when accessing resources in Barry University’s cloud environment—no configuration
is needed. You will need to install WebRDP Mobile from the AppStore. On your iPad, click the AppStore
icon and search for WebRDP Mobile. In order to install the app you will need to have an iTunes account.
Note: WebRDP Mobile will also run on iPhones and iPods. Android and other devices are currently
under development. Access to this site will be available when testing is completed.
Note: In the cloud environment applications have limited use using mobile devices.
