Foundation Grant Provides Safe Place to Dispose of Medicine
As the Director of Consulting and Outpatient
Services at Monroe Clinic, Todd Noggle
knows that a lot of patients are unsure of
what to do with unused prescriptions.
“One of the departments I work with closely
is Behavioral Health, and we get a lot of
discarded controlled-substance prescriptions
from patients who just didn’t know what to
do with them,” explains Todd. “And it made
me wonder, ‘Why doesn’t Green County have
a place for these?’”
As a member of the Green County Leaders, a
leadership group that focuses on community
service and personal leadership training,
Todd brought the issue to the table. He
helped connect the Green County Leaders
with the Monroe Clinic & Hospital
Foundation to see if grant money could be
provided to install drug drop boxes in local
police departments.

The Foundation was happy to accept the
request and provided grant money for
medication drop box programs throughout
Green County. The Green County Sheriff ’s
Department was the first to have a
medication drop box, accessible 24/7.
“It provides a safe place to drop unused and
unwanted medications, which helps keep
some of these drugs off of the streets and out
of kids’ hands, and helps with heroin and
other drug abuse issues,” says Green County
Detective Chris Fiez.
So far, the drop box at the sheriff ’s
department has collected over 300 pounds
of unwanted medications. Every week the
box is full and has to be emptied, and then
the medications are collected by the Drug
Enforcement Administration.
Five more medication drop boxes are being
installed in the county thanks to grants
from the Foundation. Area residents can
go to the Monroe, Monticello, Albany and
Brodhead Police Departments, Village of New
Glarus, as well as the Green County Sheriff ’s
Department, to drop off their unwanted
medications and help stem drug abuse issues
in the community.

Putting the FUN in Fundraising
There’s no such thing as too much
fundraising – just like there’s no such thing
as too much fun! Students at St. Victor’s
Grade School learned how raising money
for a good cause can be fun and meaningful
with a whole month of school events
designed to raise money for cancer patients
in the community.
Students had fun paying $2 to throw a
water balloon at their principal, bringing
in extra change and dollars to see a favorite
teacher get pied in the face, and buying
popcorn and bake sale items at school. You
may have seen a purple toilet show up in
your neighborhood – or even on your own
lawn – as St. Victor’s collected donations
from parents, students and neighbors to
play a fun prank on one another.
Finally, on the last day of fundraising, St.
Victor’s held a Walk-a-Thon. For the entire
school day, students, parents, teachers and
community members signed up to walk laps
to raise funds and awareness for cancer.

raise money for a cause the kids could relate to

“We held this event because we wanted to
help local cancer patients,” explains Lisa
Demuth, second-grade teacher at St. Victor’s
Grade School. “By doing our own Walk-aThon, we were able to keep the funds we
raised local.”
The efforts raised a total of $4,000, donated
to the Monroe Clinic & Hospital Foundation
to be used to help local oncology patients
with their treatment expenses.
By focusing the fundraising on cancer
patients, students also had the opportunity
to learn more about how the disease affects
patients and those around them.
“Cancer affects everyone, and we wanted
to raise money for a cause the kids could
relate to and learn more about,” says Lisa.
Dr. Gaines Richardson of the Palliative Care/
Hospice Department at Monroe Clinic visited
the school on the day of the Walk-a-Thon to
talk to the kids about cancer and how their
donations were going to help. There was also
a bulletin board in the school where students
could bring pictures of people they knew
who fought against cancer.
“It was a big learning experience for
them, as well as fun,” says Lisa. “They
came to understand not only the basics of
what cancer is, but how they can make a
difference for people with cancer – and that
service can also be fun.”
The Foundation and Oncology Department
are grateful for the donation from St.
Victor’s Grade School. The donated funds
are used to purchase Kwik Trip gas cards
for cancer patients who need to travel for
radiation or chemotherapy treatments.

But, when you live
here, you know that it’s
truly the Midwestern
spirit of community and
generosity that makes
Wisconsin unique – and
those traits aren’t lost on
Steve either.
Since 2010, Steve has
been a member of the Monroe Clinic & Hospital Foundation Board,
bringing his business expertise and love for his community to help
the Foundation toward its mission and goals.
“Just seeing the good they can do for the entire community, not just
at the hospital and clinic but also in the community, has been really
rewarding,” says Steve.
In particular, Steve has been impressed and excited about the work the
Foundation does for youth with the P.A.R.T.Y. Program and for hospice.
“Hospice is something that touches a lot of people, almost everyone
at some point, whether it’s for a loved one or themselves,” explains
Steve. “The projects that the Foundation has done to help hospice
are very exciting and we can hopefully do some wonderful things in
the future.”
Just like his craft, Steve knows that building a strong community
takes commitment and, sometimes, a different perspective. To
become a Master Cheesemaker®, Steve had to put in over 10 years of
experience as a licensed cheesemaker while meeting specific criteria,
then pass an intense three-year program that ended with rigorous
testing. As the owner of Klondike Cheese, Steve also takes care of
the business and finance side of things – skills and knowledge he
brings to the table at the Foundation Board.
“I think it just gives me a different perspective. No matter what you
are working with, finances are still finances, and I like that I can use
my knowledge for a good cause.”
Steve and his wife, Thea, have been married for 42 years and have
two children and six grandchildren.

Volunteer Services Make a Difference

Services has volunteer options for you!
Volunteer Services support the work and mission of Monroe Clinic
& Hospital by providing fundraising solutions and offering direct
services that enhance the patient and family experience.
“We help wherever it is needed, whether that’s staffing the front
desk, helping in inpatient and surgery, working with the pharmacy,
knitting and sewing items for newborns, baking and selling cookies
in the hospital, raising money and more,” explains Dawn Meier,
Volunteer Services Coordinator.
The money from fundraising efforts by Volunteer Services goes to
support multiple needs at Monroe Clinic, including Halo Sleep Sacks
for newborns, car seats to families in need, waiting room reading
material, the Diagnostic Memory Clinic, scholarships for area
students and much more.

Annual Fundraiser a Huge Success!
Thank you to everyone who donated and participated in the 9th
Annual Golf Outing and Dinner with the Ducks! The event raised
$93,630 to help the Foundation continue to support the work
and mission of Monroe Clinic.

Dinner and a “Little Golf”
Raises Funds for Hospice
This year, the annual Dinner and a “Little Golf” event raised
$46,030 for Hospice! Thank you to everyone who came out for
some mini-golf and a delicious dinner and to those who donated. All
of the proceeds from this event go to benefit our Hospice program.
Next year’s event will be June 23, 2015. We hope to see you there!

New Simulation Lab Ensures Exceptional Care
College provided funding for the simulators, and the Foundation
funded the audio-visual components of the lab. Simulations are
recorded so users can watch themselves in action after completing
the lab and learn even more from their experience.
“The audio-visual part is really the heart and soul of the simulation,”
explains Paula. “Watching yourself in action can be so powerful and
really is where improvement is going to come from.”
“It’s really going to benefit the hospital, the students and the
community as a whole.”
Monroe Clinic & Hospital Foundation and Blackhawk Technical
School teamed up to open a new, technologically advanced
simulation lab that will provide students and our healthcare
providers access to the most sophisticated medical training tools.
“The life-size simulators look and function like real patients –
there’s even one that will deliver a baby,” explains Paula Elmer, Vice
President and Chief Nursing Officer. “We’re able to practice and
prepare for any event and keep our care standards very high.”
Providing exceptional healthcare is part of the Monroe Clinic vision,
and access to a state-of-the-art simulation lab will ensure all of our
staff – from EMS to nursing to providers – has ongoing education and
hands-on experience responding to different medical emergencies.
“We’ll be able to use it to train staff, so we can truly simulate
situations like a patient in cardiac arrest or someone who needs
airway management,” says Paula. “With the simulation lab, we are
able to practice and remain highly skilled in our ability to provide the
right kind of care when those situations occur in real life,” says Paula.

The new lab is located in the St. Clare Center. Blackhawk Technical
P.A.R.T.Y. Program
Every year, the Monroe Clinic & Hospital Foundation sponsors
a P.A.R.T.Y. for sophomores from area high schools. Unlike a
traditional party, this one isn’t all about fun – it’s about learning the
consequences of poor decisions when behind the wheel.
The Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.)
program shows students the potential consequences of their
decisions, especially the choice to drive recklessly or under the
influence of alcohol. A dramatization of an alcohol-related accident
is put on by fellow students and actual professionals, including
paramedics, firefighters, doctors, a coroner, a judge and more. Real
people who caused accidents or were the victims of accidents spoke
about how the decision to drive under the influence changed their
lives and led to hospitalizations, funerals, jail time and more.
“It was amazing to hear how just one night can ruin someone’s whole
life,” said one Monticello student. “And it isn’t just their lives – it’s
everyone, the driver, passengers, the other car’s driver, the families.”
Deaths related to teen drinking in Green County have gone down
since the program started six years ago. The program empowers
students to make informed, safe choices and gives students a contract
to sign with their parents or responsible adult, stating that they can
always call for a ride, with no questions asked. Also, the Foundation
sponsored a follow-up Q&A forum this year for parents to learn tools
for talking with their teens about risky situations.
“We feel that if we can just get one student to make the call for a ride
instead of driving impaired, we feel that the program is successful,”
explains Julie Buchanan, Foundation Board of Directors member.
The next P.A.R.T.Y. program will be held September 22, 2015.
