results.
Selle Royal’s major saddle range, Scientia, was launched in September 2015.
Seven months in sales are strong, the range has been embraced well by media
with lots of positive stories and reviews across Europe and further afield, plus it’s
even picking up awards from the design community.
Selle Royal wanted to gather key, important feedback from their dealers about
how the saddles are being received by customers, and particularly about
dealers’ experiences when explaining the Scientia concept, the point-of-sale
materials, and fitting customers with the right saddle.
They spoke to dealers in Europe to understand their early experiences with the
Scientia and its PoS materials. Overall, what dealers have reported has been very
encouraging. They had a ‘round table’ feedback session with some major
German and Netherlands stores, who were amongst the first territories to have
the PoS kit. Here’s some of their feedback…
What has your experience been with the Selle Royal Scientia range?
“Very positive,” says John from Van de Reijt Fiets & Lifestyle.
“We’ve always looked closely at riding position, but now we have a tool to support
our story. During the sales talk we always ask if the customer is satisfied with the
current saddle. In this way we are able to make a switch to sell another Scientia
saddle.”
“A lot of customers have pain while they ride bikes,” explains the Zimmermann
team of Fahrrad Zimmermann GmbH.
“So we’ve been excited since we first saw the product, and our customers are, as
well. Finally we can specifically advice the customer presenting the right product.”

“During the orientation for a new bicycle, we actively promote Scientia. Our
Scientia customers are very satisfied with their purchase,” adding: “It shows that
the size of the customer’s bottom tells nothing about the distance between the
ischial bones.”
How have the point-of-sale materials helped you?
“Very much,” says Sander, of Tweewielers Heemstede.

“I go through the three steps and that creates trust with the customer. The PoS
materials help to underline the exclusive character of the saddle and the
complete concept.”

“The materials make an entry point for a complex topic and they are
indispensable for a good consultancy,” adds the Zimmermann team.
How have the point-of-sale materials helped you?
“It is a new concept for many customers, they feel it is a strange step for getting a
new saddle,” says Tweewielers Heemstede’s Sander.
“They feel that it is some kind of joke. After explaining it and the different steps,
customers are at ease and willing to start the measurement.”
The Zimmermann team confirms that also in Germany, “The customers see that
we seriously consider and understand their problems, and so they were taken in
a positive way and actively used in the shop.”

How does displaying all nine Scientia models help clarify the product’s
proposition?
“This presentation makes it is easier and better for the customer to understand the
whole concept,” says Andreas Sander of Biker's Best Fahrradshop.

Biker‘’ Best Fahrradshop, Munich (Germany)
“We separated the display from the Selle Royal Classic and Comfort range,”
explains Fietsklaar.nl’s Tanja and Benno.
“The Freedom Gel is the top in number of sales, but this saddle is not suited for
every cyclist. Scientia has an answer for every cyclist, something better and
different. We emphasize these USPs during our talk with the customer.”
“This presentation makes it is easier and better for the customer to understand the
whole concept,” says Andreas Sander of Biker's Best Fahrradshop.
“The packaging tells the story as well, so the customer is informed in many
different ways. Due to the time investment, a maximum of five minutes for
explaining the concept and measurement, this is a very successful tool,” says
John from Van de Reijt Fiets & Lifestyle.
“We are really happy and satisfied with the presentation,” confirms Heinz
Zimmermann.
“Without it, our good advice for the customers would not work so well.”
“It is a really good and professional way to present these products,” finishes
Marco Meier, of Fahrrad Meier.

What is your favorite part of the Selle Royal Scientia experience so far?
“A nice example was a lady who slipped off her old saddle, however the tip was
pointed upwards. When mounting the Scientia saddle, she immediately noticed
the tip was pointed downwards. After a test run, both the customer and myself
were very surprised that the saddle did support her and she did not slip off.
Afterwards, she bought the saddle and still rides on it!”
