T h e Tr i p l e C ro s s symbology, representative of the Holy Trinity, rises out of a depiction of the Holy Grail. With t h e rea d y s u p p l y of s i l ve r i n t h e n i neteenth century, the crosses became more elaborate: co m p l i ca te d o p e nwo rk d es i g n s , o r p a tter ns of endless interwoven lines symbolizing e tern i t y b eca m e p o p u l a r. Ad d i t i o n al hi nges and crowns show the influence of nineteenth century European medals. The round hollow bases were usually mounted on a staff to be ca r r i e d d u r i n g p ro ce s s i o n a l s o r d i s p l a y e d o n a n a l ta r.
