Daniil Trifonov piano
Daniil Trifonov is a Russian concert pianist and composer. In February 2013
Trifonov made his debut at Carnegie
Hall in a concert recorded by Deutsche Grammophon for an album release later that year. He was awarded
the Franco Abbiati Prize for Best Instrumental Soloist by Italy’s foremost
music critics. Previous recipients of
the prestigious award include such
keyboard giants as Maurizio Pollini, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Sviatoslav
Richter, Radu Lupu, and András Schiff.
Daniil Trifonov is - without a doubt - one
of the most interesting young pianists
currently playing the concert stages of
the world. In this recording from the Verbier Festival 2014, he showcases a stunning program featuring pieces by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Schumann.

Violinist Leonidas Kavakos and pianist Daniil Trifonov, live at the Eglise
de Verbier, for a concert in which they
play masterpieces of the violin and
piano repertoire! Third and last concert of Daniil Trifonov at the 2014 Verbier Festival: following a recital and a
Rachmaninov concerto with the great
Yuri Temirkanov, he is back this time
in a chamber ensemble, with violinist
Leonidas Kavakos. They play together
for the first time at the Verbier church, in a concert surely unforgettable.
This piano recital gathers three pieces
written during or in a souvenir of a love
story. Scriabin dedicated his Sonata
Fantasy No. 2 to his first love, Natalya
Sekerina. Lizst wrote his unique sonata the Sonata in B minor – while he
was sharing his life in Weimar with the
Polish-Russian princess Carolyne zu
Sayn-Wittgenstein. Eventually, the 24
Preludes by Chopin were composed during his vacation in Mallorca with George
Sand and her children. Concluding this
recital, Daniil Trifonov performs one of
his own compositions, Rachmaniana.
The Verbier Festival is arguably one
of the most prestigious classical music events in the world. The quality of
the participating artists as well as the
originality of the programmes has established the festival as a culminating
point in the music season. This series of TV programmes by Idéale Audience present the highlights of the
19th edition of the Verbier Festival.

Béla Bartók was a Hungarian composer and pianist. He is considered one of
the most important composers of the
20th century; he and Liszt are regarded as Hungary‘s greatest composers.
Through his collection and analytical
study of folk music, he was one of the
founders of comparative musicology,
which later became ethnomusicology.
The Concerto for Orchestra by Bela
Bartok is one of the most frequently performed works of the twentieth
century. The French composer and
conductor Pierre Boulez explains
how he interpreted this composition with the Berlin Philharmonic. He
also describes its fascination against
the backdrop of Bartok’s biography.

This performance at the beautiful historic concert hall of Esterházy Palace
in Eisenstadt, Austria is a tribute to one
of the world’s greatest musical genius,
Joseph Haydn, on the occasion of his
200th anniversary of death in 1809. The
Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra,
founded in 1987 by the internationally
renowned conductor Adam Fischer,
and world famous soloists such as
Annette Dasch and Thomas Quasthoff
honour the composer by presenting

This episode of Classic Archive presents a program entirely dedicated to
Béla Bartók, the Hugarian composer,
with the performance of his 44 duos
for two violins. These duos, composed
in 1931, were commissioned by a music teacher and were originally intented for music lessons. But soon after
(in 1932) they began to be perfomed in
concert - as with this film for French TV
from 1974. Two great violinists perform
those duos: Sándor Végh and Alberto
Lysy. They change the chronological order of the cycle at will, combining the
most difficult duos with easier ones.
An All-Bartók programme featuring one
of the leading violinists - Gidon Kremer
- and viola players - Yuri Bashmet - our
time, accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonics conducted by Pierre Boulez.
A conducted tour by Simon Rattle This
series forms a fascinating introduction to, and overview of, the orchestral
music of the twentieth century. Each
of the one-hour programmes features
thirty-five minutes of specially shot
music in performance, with maestro
Sir Simon Rattle conducting the City of
Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. His
concise and accessible introductions
to the music, illustrated with documentary material and evocative images
filmed on location in England, Europe
and the USA, help viewers to discover a
sound world of excitement and beauty.

Sol Gabetta is an Argentine cellist of
French and Russian descent. She achieved international acclaim upon winning
the Crédit Suisse Young Artist Award in
2004 and making her debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Valery Gergiev.
In 2014 she had her highly acclaimed debut with Berlin Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle at
the Baden-Baden Easter Festival.
It has changed over the years that Edward Elgar’s warm and melodically
charged Cello Concerto – long considered to be behind the times – once again
sounds modern and fresh. Sol Gabetta recently released a highly praised
recording of the work and on Easter
Sunday 2014 the cellist made her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

The violoncellist Sol Gabetta has become an essential part of the international concert scene. On stage, she
seems to perfectly merge with her instrument. The portrait of A part of my soul
leads us through rehearsals and performances, including works by Elgar,
Schumann, Shostakovich, Bloch, Vivaldi and Schubert. Written for Sol Gabetta the world premiere of Presence by
Peteris Vasks marks the end of the film
about a soloist, who not only impresses
the audience with her unique musical touch, but also with her charisma.
Sol Gabetta and the Chamber orchestra Basel perform Haydn’s Concert for
violoncello and orchestra in C major
in the magnificent St. Martin Baroque
church in Rheinfelden. The second piece is Plainscapes for mixed choir,
violin and violoncello, composed by
Peteris Vasks in 2002 for Sol Gabatta.
This piece has been beautifully captured, both visually and musically, in the
atmospheric Klosterkirche in Olsberg.
Yehudi Menuhin was an American-born
British and Swiss violinist and conductor who is widely considered one of the

This episode presents the three Menuhins: Yehudi, Hephzibah and Jeremy.
The first three works are by Bartok and
were recorded in 1973. Contrasts for
clarinet, violin and piano, performed by
Yehudi Menuhin, his son and the clarinettist, Thea King, is followed by a very
1970’s style Sonata No.1 for violin and
piano, performed by Yehudi Menuhin
and his sister, Hephzibah. Then, Yehudi Menuhin performs the Unaccompanied violin sonata. In the next three
pieces, the repertoire is also contemporary. Yehudi and Hephzibah perform
the Sonata No.3 in A minor by Enesco.
In this program of Classic Archive, Yehudi Menuhin and David Oïstrakh perform Bach’s Two violins Concerto. The
performance took place in 1958 with the
Orchestre de Chambre de la RTF under
Pierre Capdevielle conducting. Then,
the program presents an archive from
1967, when Yehudi Menuhin performed
the Violin Concerto No.3 by Mozart with
the Orchestre de Chambre de l’ORTF.
First the rehearsal and then the concert.
This episode of Classic Archive introduces Yehudi Menuhin, one of the violin’s
“maestros”. From the age of eight, he
showed the talents of a child prodigy
and begged his teacher to be allowed
to work on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto
in D major, op.61. It’s this piece he performs here with the London Symphony
Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis in
1962 in the International Concert Hall.
J. S. Bach was also a composer dear to
the violinist and throughout his career he
performed Bach’s sonatas and partitas.

The Easter Festival is an internationally
renowned event among classical music
lovers, traditionally opened in Moscow
on Easter Sunday. Each year the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and its musical director Valery Gergiev travel across
Russia - for the past 10 years now! In
2012 we can anticipate an exceptional
musical gift: the Mariinsky Theatre
Symphony Orchestra under the baton
of Valery Gergiev performs the complete cycle of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies and piano concerti - a composer
with whom Maestro Gergiev and the
orchestra seem particularly in tune.
Prokofiev flows in the veins of the Mariinsky Theatre’s musicians, and has
moreover done so for a long time; and
the fact that, under Gergiev’s baton, the
orchestra and the opera company performed all of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies, all of his concerti and all of his
operas more than once is here of fundamental significance. All the senses
and all the emotions are presented here
by the orchestra in full on an immense yet refined palette of sounds, with a
full understanding of both the text and
subtext of the events, in the lively action and with Gergiev’s inherent magic.
Deliberate confusion in 18th-century
Seville which is entangled with three
marriages blessed by the monks
of the monastery. After performances at the famous ‚Stars of the White
Nights‘Festival held in St. Petersburg
and the 1991 - 92 festival dedicated to
Prokofiev, this outstanding new staging
of Betrothal in a Monastery was recorded at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, brilliantly performed by the
Kirov Opera Company and Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Valery Gergiev.

William Shakespeare was an English
poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the
English language and the world‘s preeminent dramatist. His extant works,
including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays,154 sonnets, two
long narrative poems, and a few other
verses, some of uncertain authorship.
Towards the end of his operatic work,
Verdi succeeds in a brilliant comedy
of characters with philosophical wisdom and sparkling musical wit. The
libretto of Arrigo Boito is based upon
Shakespeare’s comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV. Bernd Weikl’s witty production
shows the simultaneity of tragedy and
comedy. The opera’s motto “All the
world’s a burlesque” is also reflected
in the stage design of Thomas Doerfler
and in the costumes of Julia Holewik.

From the Deutsche Oper Berlin 1987.
This live recording stars the great baritone Renato Bruson and soprano Mara
Zampieri as the murderous couple in
Verdi‘s opera, based on Shakespeare‘s
tragedy. Luca Ronconi‘s production
won huge critical acclaim at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, in particular for
the conductor, Giuseppe Sinopoli, whose individual virtuosity brought fresh
colour to the dramatic score. The cast
also features David Griffith as Malcolm,
James Morris as Banquo and Dennis
O‘Neill as Macduff. (Sung in Italian)
This
epic
opera,
inspired
by
Shakespeare‘s tragic masterpiece, was
the first recording from Glyndebourne.
The designer, Emanuele Luzzati, created a series of stunning visual impressions, including the chilling witches‘ chorus, the banquet at which Macbeth sees
the ghost of Banquo and Lady Macbeth‘s
hear-trending sleepwalking scene.
Guiseppe Verdi who was enthused by
Shakespeare’s plays produced with
Othello an ingenious late work that the
fantastic librettist, Arrigo Boito, had
specially adapted for him beforehand.
In his penultimate opera, the composer once again demonstrates his entire
creative energy and turns the beauty
and tragedy of the love between the
endearing Desdemona and Othello,
the commander who everyone regards
mistrustfully because he is black, into
music that excites the audience today just as much as it did back then.

Erik Satie was a French composer
and pianist. Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde. His work was a precursor to later artistic movements
such as minimalism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd.
A fascinating documentary, introducing viewers to the life and works
of the French composer Erik Satie.
This „music film“ features biographical details, performances of Satie‘s
most popular compositions and
many of his drawings and graphics.
David Fray is a French classical pianist.
Voted „Newcomer of the Year 2008“

gained attention for his musical interpretation as well as his eccentricities in
performance and rehearsal, which were
highlighted in our the 2008 documentary

David Fray’s sparkling talent is such
that he is one of the few pianists of
the new generation to have signed an
exclusive recording contract recently
with one of the current majors, Virgin
Classics. In January 2008 he recorded a programme entirely devoted to
Bach, comprising four concertos for
keyboard and orchestra. For the public these concertos are among the
most popular and stimulating of Bach’s
works. For David Fray one of the major problems facing the contemporary
performer of these works is that they
have been “visited” by Glenn Gould.

Martha Argerich is a Swiss-Argentinian pianist, widely regarded as one of
the greatest of the second half of the
20th century. Argerich rose to international prominence when she won
the seventh International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1965,
at age 24. She is also famous for her
interpretation of Prokofiev‘s Piano
Concerto No. 3, Ravel‘s Piano Concerto in G, and Bach‘s Partita No. 2 in C
minor, which she has recorded several times and continues to perform.
Both come from Buenos Aires, both
have made global careers for themselves. Martha Argerich and Daniel
Barenboim are not only fellow countrymen; they also both began to give concerts in their youth, as soloists and with
an orchestra. In addition, the two have a
particular interest in chamber music in
common - the repertoire spanning from
the classics to modernism. They now
appear together: a summit meeting of
two of the most eminent pianists of the
past few decades and of the present.

For the first time in ten years, Martha
Argerich performs Tchaikovsky‘s Piano Concerto No. 1. Argerich has been
dominating the piano scene since the
1960s thanks to a wide and varied repertoire, never conformist. Her phenomenal technique and great sensitivity
have allowed her to stamp her mark on
the most demanding works of the repertoire. She is very familiar with the
Verbier Festival, and she opened the
2014 edition with the famous Concerto for piano No. 1 by Tchaikovsky, with
conductor Charles Dutoit, musical director of the Verbier Festival Orchestra.
The Argentine pianist Martha Argerich
has been dazzling audiences for decades with what the New York Times has
referred to as “prodigious technique
with uncanny musicality.” She is the last
remaining pianist of legend, one of the
most secretive and endearing artists of
our time. In this programme Argerich
performs the Chopin Concerto No. 1.
A family portrait blending intimate
conversations, agreements and disagreements, and shred ties of sounds
and blood. An intimate portrait of two
musical giants. This documentary by
Martha Argerich’s daughter Stéphanie is made up of sequences focusing
on the two characters of Martha and
Stephen Kovacevitch in their everyday lifes, in rehearsal and in performance, the film will be largely given
over to intimate conversations, delicious anecdotes, and a few scenes in
which we will see the family reunited.

Antonín Dvorák was a Czech composer. Following the nationalist example of Bedrich Smetana, Dvorák frequently employed aspects, specifically
rhythms, of the folk music of Moravia
and his native Bohemia. Dvorák’s ten
operas all have librettos in Czech and
were intended to convey Czech national spirit, as were some of his choral works. By far the most successful of the operas is Rusalka. He has
been described as „arguably the most
versatile... composer of his time“.
Philippe Herreweghe, principal conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, has devoted himself for over
ten years to fresh and invigorating
readings of the (pre-) Romantic repertoire. Together with the Collegium Vocale, founded in 1970 by Herreweghe
himself, and superb soloists they will
perform Dvorák’s superb Requiem.

The Verbier Festival is arguably one
of the most prestigious classical music events in the world. A true star of
the Russian piano, Evgeny Kissin is a
regular guest of the Verbier Festival

Schubert and Liszt are among the two
greatest Romantic composers for the
piano. Evgeny Kissin, the true star of
the piano ever since his childhood,
pays tribute to these two great composers who have left an imperishable
mark on Western music. With excerpts
from Schubert’s Impromtus Op. 90 and

In this program, we witness the creation of one of these milestones as

Anton Bruckner was an Austrian
composer known for his symphonies,
masses, and motets. The first are
considered emblematic of the final
stage of Austro-German Romanticism
because of their rich harmonic language, strongly polyphonic character,
and considerable length.Bruckner‘s
compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing
to their dissonances, unprepared
modulations, and roving harmonies.

A FILM BY JAN SCHMIDT-GARRE
In his late years, Sergiu Celibidache
focused his attention on one particular
composer: Anton Bruckner. In March
1991 he rehearsed Bruckner´s Ninth
in unusually long and intense sessions
with the Munich Philharmonics. Using
unpublished footage, this film shows
the individual stages of this tantalizing
process of a seemingly familiar piece
being rediscovered. Again and again
Celibidache interrupts the musicians
to communicate his sharply articulated thoughts. Theory and practical work aren´t opposed anymore.
At the age of 43, Anton Bruckner has
not developed his full musical genius.
Although everything inside him is striving towards music he finds one excuse after another to turn away from
his vocation. Having completed every
imaginable course of study in music,
he is now confronted with the decision of his life: shall he go to Vienna and
complete his work as a composer, or
shall he remain in his home town of
Linz as a teacher and organist? A complete portrait of Bruckner illustrated
through a very small episode of his life.

Under the motto “Rhythm and Dance”
Kent Nagano created one of the most
exciting programmes the Berliner Philharmoniker ever played at the Waldbühne with his combination of popular and rather unusual music from
the 20th Century. Nagano injected so
much sensuality and pulsing vividness that the audience had no choice
but to beat the rhythm with their feet
and to give standing ovations to him.
Marin‘s reworking of this much-loved
classic is a hugely entertaining and
constantly surprising piece of dance
theatre. The modern idiom of her imaginative choreography teams perfectly
with the infectious melodies of Leo Delibes‘ lively score, played by the Lyon
National Opera Orchestra conducted by
Kent Nagano. Marin‘s Coppelia has lost
none of the charm of the original, but
has taken on a wry humour, which adds
to its appeal for today‘s audiences.

Benjamin Britten was an English composer, conductor and pianist. He was a
central figure of 20th-century British
classical music, with a range of works
including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces. His bestknown works include the opera Peter
Grimes (1945), the War Requiem (1962)
and the orchestral showpiece The Young
Person‘s Guide to the Orchestra (1945).
Based on George Crabbe’s 1810 poem
The Borough, Britten’s powerful and
masterful evocation of the North Sea in
all its moods has become inextricably
linked with the Aldeburgh that was
home to Crabbe in the late eighteenth
century and Britten in the twentieth,
and where both poem and opera were
written. Conceived and hosted by the
Aldeburgh Festival, the performances
of Peter Grimes were directed by Tim
Albery who placed the audience on the
beach watching the story of Peter Grimes unfold as dusk fades over the sea.

Tim Albery‘s startlingly original treatment of Britten‘s vivid tragedy was
hailed as a landmark production when it
was staged at the English National Opera. The critics were unanimous in their
praise of Philip Langridge‘s remarkable portrayal of Grimes, and the whole
company, won countless accolades,
as did the inspired musical direction of
conductor David Atherton. The individual set against the community: this is the
theme of the opera and never has this
stark opposition been so sharply realised as in Albery‘s very abstract vision.
Based on Henry James‘ novel of the
same name, this gripping drama explores an encounter with the super-natural.
mic opera is gently laced with moments
of farce and a jocular parody on life in
East Suffolk at the turn of the 20th
century. The libretto by Eric Crozier is
based on Guy de Maupassant‘s story Le
Rosier de Madame Husson and transposed entirely to an English setting. The
opera was premiered in Glyndebourne
on 20 June 1947, conducted by the
composer. The text itself is genuinely
funny and there are myriad musical
quotations, but despite the light subject
there are as well some complex forms.

Walter Elias „Walt“ Disney was an
American entrepreneur, cartoonist,
animator, voice actor, and film producer. As a prominent figure within
the American animation industry and
throughout the world, he is regarded as a cultural icon, known for his
influence and contributions to entertainment during the 20th century.
Imagining the final months of the life
of Walt Disney - the person who has,
more than any other, influenced the
current world of consumers. Children
nowadays only see mices and ducks
as Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck,
thanks to the image invented for them
by Walt Disney factory. In opposition to
the world of happiness he devised, the
existence of this perfect American was
marked by an unhappy youth and a personality whose “political correctness”
outdid that of even Richard Nixon.
