In February 2013 Trifonov made his debut at Carnegie Hall in a concert recorded by Deutsche Grammophon for an album release later that year. He was awarded the Franco Abbiati Prize for Best Instrumental Soloist by Italy’s foremost music critics. Previous recipients of the prestigious award include such keyboard giants as Maurizio Pollini, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Sviatoslav Richter, Radu Lupu, and András Schiff. Daniil Trifonov is - without a doubt - one of the most interesting young pianists currently playing the concert stages of the world. In this recording from the Verbier Festival 2014, he showcases a stunning program featuring pieces by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Schumann. 2014 84’ Director: Christian Leblé Produced by: Idéale Audience, MUSEEC, medici.tv 7521 ARTISTS & COMPOSERS ANNIVERSARIES VERBIER FESTIVAL 2014 VERBIER FESTIVAL 2013 VERBIER 2012 LEONIDAS KAVAKOS AND DANIIL TRIFONOV DANIIL TRIFONOV LIVE IN VERBIER DANIIL TRIFONOV PLAYS CHOPIN SCHUMANN: Sonata No.1 for violin and piano in A minor BUSONI: Sonata No.2 for violin and piano STRAVINSKY: Suite Italienne (Version Dushkin, 1934) And many more SCRIABIN: Sonata Fantasy No.2 in Gsharp minor LISZT: Sonata in B minor CHOPIN: 24 Preludes TRIFONOV: Rachmaniana (Suites 1,2,3) WALTZS AND ÉTUDES BY CHOPIN DEBUSSY: Hommage à Rameau Daniil Trifonov piano Leonidas Kavakos violin Daniil Trifonov piano Daniil Trifonov piano Masaaki Suzuki conductor Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra Violinist Leonidas Kavakos and pianist Daniil Trifonov, live at the Eglise de Verbier, for a concert in which they play masterpieces of the violin and piano repertoire! Third and last concert of Daniil Trifonov at the 2014 Verbier Festival: following a recital and a Rachmaninov concerto with the great Yuri Temirkanov, he is back this time in a chamber ensemble, with violinist Leonidas Kavakos. They play together for the first time at the Verbier church, in a concert surely unforgettable. This piano recital gathers three pieces written during or in a souvenir of a love story. Scriabin dedicated his Sonata Fantasy No. 2 to his first love, Natalya Sekerina. Lizst wrote his unique sonata the Sonata in B minor – while he was sharing his life in Weimar with the Polish-Russian princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein. Eventually, the 24 Preludes by Chopin were composed during his vacation in Mallorca with George Sand and her children. Concluding this recital, Daniil Trifonov performs one of his own compositions, Rachmaniana. The Verbier Festival is arguably one of the most prestigious classical music events in the world. The quality of the participating artists as well as the originality of the programmes has established the festival as a culminating point in the music season. But soon after (in 1932) they began to be perfomed in concert - as with this film for French TV from 1974. Two great violinists perform those duos: Sándor Végh and Alberto Lysy. They change the chronological order of the cycle at will, combining the most difficult duos with easier ones. An All-Bartók programme featuring one of the leading violinists - Gidon Kremer - and viola players - Yuri Bashmet - our time, accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonics conducted by Pierre Boulez. Sol Gabetta and the Chamber orchestra Basel perform Haydn’s Concert for violoncello and orchestra in C major in the magnificent St. Martin Baroque church in Rheinfelden. The second piece is Plainscapes for mixed choir, violin and violoncello, composed by Peteris Vasks in 2002 for Sol Gabatta. Contrasts for clarinet, violin and piano, performed by Yehudi Menuhin, his son and the clarinettist, Thea King, is followed by a very 1970’s style Sonata No.1 for violin and piano, performed by Yehudi Menuhin and his sister, Hephzibah. Then, Yehudi Menuhin performs the Unaccompanied violin sonata. In the next three pieces, the repertoire is also contemporary. Yehudi and Hephzibah perform the Sonata No.3 in A minor by Enesco. In this program of Classic Archive, Yehudi Menuhin and David Oïstrakh perform Bach’s Two violins Concerto. The performance took place in 1958 with the Orchestre de Chambre de la RTF under Pierre Capdevielle conducting. Then, the program presents an archive from 1967, when Yehudi Menuhin performed the Violin Concerto No.3 by Mozart with the Orchestre de Chambre de l’ORTF. First the rehearsal and then the concert. This episode of Classic Archive introduces Yehudi Menuhin, one of the violin’s “maestros”. From the age of eight, he showed the talents of a child prodigy and begged his teacher to be allowed to work on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major, op.61. It’s this piece he performs here with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis in 1962 in the International Concert Hall. J. S. Bach was also a composer dear to the violinist and throughout his career he performed Bach’s sonatas and partitas. 2000 50’ 2000 52’ 2000 Director: Philippe Truffault Director: Philippe Truffault Director: Philippe Truffault Produced by: Idéale Audience Produced by: Idéale Audience Produced by: Idéale Audience 7450 7449 7435 53’ 11 12 ARTISTS & COMPOSERS ANNIVERSARIES MENUHIN PLAYS MENDELSSOHN BRAHMS VIOLIN CONCERTO CONCERT MAGIC THE FIRST EVER CONCERT FILMED FOR MOVIE AUDIENCES THE MEETING OF MUSICAL LEGENDS THE FIRST EVER CONCERT FILMED FOR MOVIE AUDIENCES MENDELSSOHN: Violin Concerto in E minor BRAHMS: Violin Concerto in D Major BEETHOVEN: Violin Sonata No.1 in D major, mov. 1 BACH: Preludio from Partita for Violin Solo No.3 in E major MENDELSSOHN: Étude in F major, No.2 And many more Yehudi Menuhin violin Antal Dorati conductor Symphony Orchestra Hollywood Yehudi Menuhin violin Kurt Masur conductor Gewandhaus Orchestra Yehudi Menuhin | Eula Beal and others Antal Dorati conductor Symphony Orchestra Hollywood In 1947 Concert Magic was filmed in Hollywood making it the first ever concert filmed for movie audiences. In 2012 we can anticipate an exceptional musical gift: the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev performs the complete cycle of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies and piano concerti - a composer with whom Maestro Gergiev and the orchestra seem particularly in tune. Prokofiev flows in the veins of the Mariinsky Theatre’s musicians, and has moreover done so for a long time; and the fact that, under Gergiev’s baton, the orchestra and the opera company performed all of Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonies, all of his concerti and all of his operas more than once is here of fundamental significance. All the senses and all the emotions are presented here by the orchestra in full on an immense yet refined palette of sounds, with a full understanding of both the text and subtext of the events, in the lively action and with Gergiev’s inherent magic. For the public these concertos are among the most popular and stimulating of Bach’s works. For David Fray one of the major problems facing the contemporary performer of these works is that they have been “visited” by Glenn Gould. 2010 36’ / 16‘ 2010 33’ / 10‘ 2008 97’ Director: Bruno Monsaingeon Director: Bruno Monsaingeon Director: Bruno Monsaingeon Produced by: Idéale Audience, Cinétévé, ZDF/ARTE Produced by: Idéale Audience, Cinétévé, ZDF/ARTE Idéale Audience, Arte France, Mezzo 7960 7959 Produced by: 7837 19 20 ARTISTS & COMPOSERS ANNIVERSARIES VERBIER FESTIVAL 2009 VERBIER FESTIVAL 2009 ESA-PEKKA SALONEN AND DAVID FRAY DAVID FRAY AND VALERY SOKOLOV DAVID FRAY PLAYS SCHUBERT, BACH AND SCHUMANN A RARE OPPORTUNITY BEETHOVEN: Violon Sonata No. 6 in A Major BACH: Violin and Piano Sonata in C minor SCHUBERT: Allegretto in C minor SCHUBERT: Klavierstück No. 2 BACH: Partita No. 6 SCHUMANN: Kinderszenen No. 1 DEBUSSY: La Mer RAVEL: Concerto in G Major BACH: Partita No. 6 in E minor BEETHOVEN: Symphony No.7 in A Major (short version without the Beethoven Symphony) David Fray piano Valery Sokolov violin David Fray piano David Fray piano Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor Orchestre de Paris This series of TV programmes presents the very best of the 16th Verbier Festival with worldwide renowned artists such as Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, René Pape, Joshua Bell, and Philippe Jaroussky. Argerich rose to international prominence when she won the seventh International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1965, at age 24. She is also famous for her interpretation of Prokofiev‘s Piano Concerto No. 3, Ravel‘s Piano Concerto in G, and Bach‘s Partita No. 2 in C minor, which she has recorded several times and continues to perform. Both come from Buenos Aires, both have made global careers for themselves. Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim are not only fellow countrymen; they also both began to give concerts in their youth, as soloists and with an orchestra. In addition, the two have a particular interest in chamber music in common - the repertoire spanning from the classics to modernism. They now appear together: a summit meeting of two of the most eminent pianists of the past few decades and of the present. 2014 74’ Director: Michael Beyer Produced by: EuroArts, RBB, ARTE, Unitel 5999 21 22 ARTISTS & COMPOSERS ANNIVERSARIES BLOODY DAUGHTER VERBIER FESTIVAL 2014 MARTHA ARGERICH PLAYS CHOPIN THE MOTHER THROUGH THE DAUGHTER’S EYES CHARLES DUTOIT AND MARTHA ARGERICH PRODIGIOUS TECHNIQUE WITH UNCANNY MUSICALITY A FILM BY STÉPHANIE ARGERICH TCHAIKOVSKY: Piano Concerto No.1 BRAHMS: Symphony No.1 SCHUMANN: Kinderszenen CHOPIN: Concerto No.1 in E minor CHOPIN: Mazurka No.2 SCHUMANN: Traumeswirren No.7 (from Fantasie Stücke) Martha Argerich piano Charles Dutoit conductor Verbier Festival Orchestra Martha Argerich piano For the first time in ten years, Martha Argerich performs Tchaikovsky‘s Piano Concerto No. 1. The first are considered emblematic of the final stage of Austro-German Romanticism because of their rich harmonic language, strongly polyphonic character, and considerable length.Bruckner‘s compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing to their dissonances, unprepared modulations, and roving harmonies. 2005 67’ 1997 Director: Michael Beyer Director: Agnes Meth Produced by: EuroArts, SF DRS, ARTE, NHK Produced by: SDR © SDR 5463 5272 57’ 39 40 ARTISTS & COMPOSERS ANNIVERSARIES PIERRE BOULEZ CON- CELIBIDACHE CONDUCTS BRUCKNER DUCTS BRUCKNER SERGIU CELIBIDACHE CONDUCTS THE BPO ON THE OCCASION OF BRUCKNER‘S 100TH DAY OF DEATH HIGHLIGHTING THREE OUTSTANDING SYMPHONIES CELIBIDACHE‘S TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE PODIUM OF THE BPO BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 8 PART 1: BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 6 PART 2: BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 7 PART 3: BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 8 BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 7 in E major Pierre Boulez conductor Wiener Philharmoniker Sergiu Celibidache conductor Münchner Philharmoniker Sergiu Celibidache conductor Berliner Philharmoniker On the occasion of Bruckner‘s 100th day of death, Pierre Boulez conducts his eighth Symphony. In March 1991 he rehearsed Bruckner´s Ninth in unusually long and intense sessions with the Munich Philharmonics. Using unpublished footage, this film shows the individual stages of this tantalizing process of a seemingly familiar piece being rediscovered. Again and again Celibidache interrupts the musicians to communicate his sharply articulated thoughts. Theory and practical work aren´t opposed anymore. At the age of 43, Anton Bruckner has not developed his full musical genius. Although everything inside him is striving towards music he finds one excuse after another to turn away from his vocation. Having completed every imaginable course of study in music, he is now confronted with the decision of his life: shall he go to Vienna and complete his work as a composer, or shall he remain in his home town of Linz as a teacher and organist? A complete portrait of Bruckner illustrated through a very small episode of his life. Nagano injected so much sensuality and pulsing vividness that the audience had no choice but to beat the rhythm with their feet and to give standing ovations to him. Marin‘s reworking of this much-loved classic is a hugely entertaining and constantly surprising piece of dance theatre. The modern idiom of her imaginative choreography teams perfectly with the infectious melodies of Leo Delibes‘ lively score, played by the Lyon National Opera Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano. Marin‘s Coppelia has lost none of the charm of the original, but has taken on a wry humour, which adds to its appeal for today‘s audiences. . 2000 127’ / 90‘ 1994 68’ / 62‘ Director: Bob Coles Director: Thomas Grimm Produced by: EuroArts, SFB ©EuroArts, brilliant media/ VIDEAL Produced by: RM Arts, Danmarks Radio, Lyon Opera, ZDF-ARTE, and others 5052 8092 ARTISTS & COMPOSERS ANNIVERSARIES D E C E M B E R BENJAMIN BRITTEN PASSED AWAY 40 YEARS AGO * 22 NOVEMBER 1913 † 04 DECEMBER 1976 PETER GRIMES ON ALDEBURGH BEACH THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OPERA OF POST-WAR BRITAIN Alan Oke Peter Grimes | Giselle Allen Ellen Orford | David Kempster Captain Balstrode | Chorus of the Opera North | Chorus of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama Tim Albery live production director Steuart Bedford conductor Britten-Pears Orchestra Benjamin Britten was an English composer, conductor and pianist. He was a central figure of 20th-century British classical music, with a range of works including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces. His bestknown works include the opera Peter Grimes (1945), the War Requiem (1962) and the orchestral showpiece The Young Person‘s Guide to the Orchestra (1945). Based on George Crabbe’s 1810 poem The Borough, Britten’s powerful and masterful evocation of the North Sea in all its moods has become inextricably linked with the Aldeburgh that was home to Crabbe in the late eighteenth century and Britten in the twentieth, and where both poem and opera were written. Conceived and hosted by the Aldeburgh Festival, the performances of Peter Grimes were directed by Tim Albery who placed the audience on the beach watching the story of Peter Grimes unfold as dusk fades over the sea. 2013 Director: Margaret Williams Produced by: Arthaus Musik 8792 141’ 45 46 ARTISTS & COMPOSERS ANNIVERSARIES ALBERT HERRING PETER GRIMES THE TURN OF THE SCREW EXPLORING SOCIETY‘S REACTION TO AN ODD INDIVIDUAL THE INDIVIDUAL SET AGAINST THE COMMUNITY A GRIPPING DRAMA EXPLORING THE SUPER-NATURAL Allan Clayton Albert Herring | Nancy Gustafson Lady Billows | Felicity Palmer Florence Pike | Ailish Tynan Miss Wordsworth | Christopher Purves Mr. Gedge Simeon Esper Mr. Upfold Andrew Greenan Superintendant Budd Leigh Melrose Sid Philip Langridge | Janice Cairns | Alan Opie | Ann Howard | Andrew Greenan Helen Field | Mandi Davies | Richard Greager | Machiko Obata Richard Brunel stage director Laurence Equilbey conductor Orchestra of the Opéra de Rouen Tim Albery stage director David Atherton conductor English National Opera Orchestra Michael Hampe stage director Steuart Bedford conductor Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart Albert Herring, Benjamin Britten‘s co- Tim Albery‘s startlingly original treatment of Britten‘s vivid tragedy was hailed as a landmark production when it was staged at the English National Opera. The critics were unanimous in their praise of Philip Langridge‘s remarkable portrayal of Grimes, and the whole company, won countless accolades, as did the inspired musical direction of conductor David Atherton. The individual set against the community: this is the theme of the opera and never has this stark opposition been so sharply realised as in Albery‘s very abstract vision. Based on Henry James‘ novel of the same name, this gripping drama explores an encounter with the super-natural. mic opera is gently laced with moments of farce and a jocular parody on life in East Suffolk at the turn of the 20th century. The libretto by Eric Crozier is based on Guy de Maupassant‘s story Le Rosier de Madame Husson and transposed entirely to an English setting. The opera was premiered in Glyndebourne on 20 June 1947, conducted by the composer. The text itself is genuinely funny and there are myriad musical quotations, but despite the light subject there are as well some complex forms. 2009 140’ 1994 144’ 1990 114’ Director: Martin Fraudreau Director: Barrie Gavin Director: Claus Viller Produced by: AMIRAL-LDA, Mezzo Produced by: RM Arts, BBC, Decca, Bayerischer Rundfunk and others Produced by: SDR, Maran Film GmbH © Maran Film GmbH 5800 8120 0680 ARTISTS & COMPOSERS ANNIVERSARIES BILLY BUDD A GRIPPING STORY OF INJUSTICE ABOARD A BRITISH MAN-O‘-WAR Sir Thomas Allen | Philip Langridge | Richard van Allan JOSÉ CARRERAS JOSÉ CARRERAS: AROUND THE WORLD BORN 70 YEARS AGO A MUSICAL JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD * 05 DECEMBER 1946 A FILM BY MICHAEL BECKER José Carreras is a Spanish tenor who is particularly known for his performances in the operas of Verdi and Puccini.
